Merging MP4 clips and saving as MP4 in PE8

In PE8, I imported several MP4 clip segments that are part of an entire MP4 movie.  I placed them in sceneline view.  The only option I could save it was a PE file and I would have to watch it using PE.  The clip scenes played back slow and seemed distorted.  How can I successfully merge the clips in order, save it as an MP4 file so that it can be watched independent of PE and playback as the original full movie in it's HD resolution.  My max resolution on my monitor is 1920 x 1080.  Thanks.

John Newbie
What are the properties of these .mp4 clip segments (video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, and pixel aspect ratio)?
For now I am assuming you have Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on some version of Windows and your video is
1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second and are working from an NTSC setup
Open Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 and set the project preset to
NTSC
AVCHD
HD 1080i30
Set to work in the Timeline workspace.
When you export,
Share
Mobile Phones and Players
Apple iPod and iPhone
with Presets = iPod and iPhone
Under the Advanced Button/Video Tab set the Exporting Settings to look like
Start off by setting the Profile = High and Level = 5.1 before adjusting the rest of the settings to look
as in the screenshot.
You will end up with a H.264.mp4 clip (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 progressive frames per second).
Please review. If you have any questions or need clarification do not hesitate to ask.
There are many many more details in Premiere Elements setup, importing, editing, and export by let us start here.
And, be sure to be working from the 8.0.1 Update with the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer
features turned off.
Thanks.

  • AA3 library of audio clips and saving session

Either I have lost my mind, or I've changed a setting somehow, or I'm just now noticing something that may have been this way forever. I could swear if you have 5 audio clips in your library and only 3 in the multi-track, when you save the session, all 5 clips should still be in the library when you re-open the session. I have not chosen to "close unused media" at any time.
In trouble-shooting, I open AA3 with an empty library, import 5 files into the library, save session, close session, attempt to open session (and looking at the "component files" box while in the "open" dialog), I do not see any files in this area. I have "show file info" checked. I can understand if no files are in the multi-track, this list would be empty, but it should still show what files are in the library panel.
If I go back to where I've imported 5 files into the library, place 1 clip in the multi-track, save session, close it, re-open the session, only 1 file is in the library. This is strange to me because I could swear I've been able to import all the files I might need for that session and keep them in the library until I'm ready to place them in the multi-track and I could save and open as many times as needed (while never choosing to close unused media), and all the files I imported would remain in the library regardless - almost like AA3 is automatically closing unused media and deleting those clips from my library. Is this the way it is and I'm just now noticing this? I've worked with AA3 since it was released...

My impression is the same as your's but I'm not at my studio PC at the moment to try it.
You can use this tool to see exactly what files (along with some other useful things) are being used in an AA session once you exit AA.

  • Reducing Clips and Saving in Imovie

I have a lot of footage I want to cut down, but I am finding that even though I am cutting some of the footage out the size of the file is not shrinking. This appears to be a function of Imovie so don't lose any of the footage if you want to go back to it. Is there a way for me to cut down 60 minutes of video to 30 minutes and reduuce the size of the file.
Hope that not a dumb question, but most users on this site seem very knowledgable and any input would be appreciated. I figured at worst case I could export back to a new tape and the recapture, but seems like a lot of work and should be an easier way.
That brings up a 2nd question as long as I am posting. If you export back to tape can you reuse it like a hard drive or do you lose quality. My inclination would be to use new tapes only, but wanted to make sure I am not going overboard.
    Thanks

IMovie HD does what's called non-destructive editing. When you remove parts of a clip, the original source material is always retained. That lets you restore a clip to its original state at any time, and recover from goofs.
So long as any clip uses a particular Media file, that Media file is never shortened nor discarded. When the LAST clip of a file is deleted, the Media file is discarded when you empty the iMovie trash. But never before.
If disk space is a problem, the solution is to buy an external hard drive where you store/edit your projects. Drives are cheap today, so that's a good solution.
When that's not possible, the project can be exported back to the camera, then re-imported to a new project. The clips you cut from the first project will remain on the cutting room floor.
One benefit of iMovie HD's non-destructive editing feature is that projects are no longer as vulnerable to the corruption that occurred in iMovie 2, iMovie 3 and iMovie 4. In those versions emptying the iMovie trash could lead to major problems, including complete destruction of the project.
There are lots of threads here that discuss the pros and cons of non-destructive editing. Search the forum for "non-destructive" to locate them.
If you export back to tape can you reuse it like a hard drive or do you lose quality.
There will be no loss of quality. The video is digital material, so it can move back and forth between the camera and iMovie with no change in quality. It's not necessary to use new tapes. (Unless your tape has been used many times, of course. On the contrary pros sometimes advise against using a new -- i.e. untested -- tape for important material.)

  • Merge mp4 clips into one via CS5.5?

Can anyone provide insight on how to take two MP4 clips and merge them into a single MP4 (or other format) file?

I guess that depends on what is inside that MP4 wrapper (see below)
My wife's Flip HD produces MP4's which I just lay end-to-end on a PPro CS5 timeline and export as DV AVI Widescreen to copy to her (less horsepower) computer so she can "play" with them with PPro CS2

  • Merging a clip in audition3 (please help)

I recently upgraded to audition3 and I'm having a bit of problem. Having done a succesful punch in on track 2 in multi track view, I can't find a way to merge my clip into the track. With audition 1.5 you simply right clicked the clip and merged the clip and it merged becoming one track. Surely I'm doing something wrong. The only way I seem to be able to achieve this is bounce the selected clips from trck 2 to a new track which if your doing several punch in's is quite tedious. Can anyone help.

The way this works in AA3 is totally different some think better some not.
Once you set up a punch-in area you can keep re-recording over that section as many times as you like creating layer upon layer of takes until you get the take you like.  You dont have to 'merge' the takes or any takes for that matter. You can choose to play hidden takes or not.
But if it bothers you to not have those takes there I would suggest you lock the top clip in time slide it down to an adjacent track then delete any extra takes until you get to the 'main' track. Split the initial or main track peel it back and slide your keeper 'take' back up into position adjusting any x-fades.
Sounds more complex than it is or as I said you can do nothing - I tend to do the moving & peeling but thats just me.
You really don't have to have all takes bounced down to one track - leave it all to the final 'export'.  Its not unusual to have hunbdreds of clips scattered over 20 or so tracks when I'm working.
Check www.mediasweeper.com.au for a utility to remove unwanted takes when you have finished your project

  • When importing files into fcpx from go pro hero2, some are importing as .mov and some as .mp4. when making a multi cam clip it will only add one type, if you try and add the other it says camera clip cannot be processed.

when importing files into fcpx from go pro hero2, some are importing as .mov and some as .mp4. when making a multi cam clip it will only add one type, if you try and add the other it says camera clip cannot be processed. need to figure out why it randomly imports differently, or how to add different file tyoes to multi cam.

here is one that is imported and stays .mp4. the specs are same as original file before import.
here is one that has changed somehow during import. specs on original file are same as above, but once it is imported it changes to this in event folder, and others randomly keep the above specs.

  • MP4 clips out of sync when dropping onto my timeline and I can't fix it.

I'm trying to drop some mp4 clips onto my timeline in CS6 Premier Pro. The problem is the audio keeps going out of sync. It plays fine elsewhere but for some reason doesn't sync up properly in the timeline and I can't fix it. It looks like the video is slower than the audio/ the audio is quicker. When the clip is on the timeline it has a green line above it where as everything that is in sync has a yellow line. All clips have been imported from my internal drive. I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5. Does anyone know how to fix this?

What is the source of your clips, and do they possibly use a Variable Frame Rate instead of a Constant Frame Rate?

  • Combining .mov and .mp4 clips

I'm working on a project in which I capture HD video from my camera using iM09, which results in a .mov clip. Another person is supplying .mp4 clips he has captured from his non-HD camera, using a non-Apple product. I edit these clips together in a single iM09 project and "share" to iDVD. The resulting DVD contains acceptable output from the .mov source, but the output from the .mp4 source is not good at all. Where can I get information that will help me understand how to put together a workflow that will provide the best possible results?

The iPad does have a number of requirements for the MPEG-4 formatted video. If it's h.264 encoded (that is, an MPEG-4 file that adheres to the profile specified in section h.264 of the MPEG standard), it can be up to 1080p @ 30fps, otherwise for all other variations of MP4, the limit is 640x480 @ 30 fps and 2.5 Mbps. Audio maxes out at 160 kbps/channel 48kHz and in the AAC-LC format.
In iTunes, you can coerce a video to an iPad-compatible format using Advanced > Create iPad or Apple TV Version.

  • Cutting and saving individual video and audio files from a clip

I have to cut 201 individual video and audio files for separate scenes from an 11-minute animated episode and save them as separate MP4 video and MP3 audio files. What is the most efficient way to do this?

Without knowing more about your project, it's hard to even guess at the most efficient workflow.
Like: Do these clips have audio or are you adding it? What format are these clips? What is the intended delivery for the 11 minute movie?
As a general matter, one creates an event, imports clips to it. Then organizes the clips according to the needs of job, using keyword collections and ratings. Then creates a project and starts a rough cut by marking ranges in the event browser and editing to the time line. Some people start with the music, making that the primary storyline mark where they want the edit to be and cut to that.
Upon finishing, one can choose one or more of the "destination" presets. It's possible to export Audio only or Video only or both. MP3 is one of the audio choices. Some of the presets are MP4. If you want possibly better quality and more control, export the files as master files and encode in Compressor.
    Good luck.

  • Imported MP4 clip from my HD will not thumbnail

I created a new project then imported an MP4 clip from my HD as a new event but it does not thumbnail. When the event is selected the event window says "video not found" The same clip  playsjust  fine on Quicktime. I tried closing iMovie and reopening to no avail. I also tried deleting and reimporting. It still says video not found and I cannot drag the event into the project window.

I have the same camera, and I have imported mp4 videos at 30p successfully into iMovie 9.09.
However, I'm running Mavericks (10.9.1), and I pull the SDHC card from the camera and  plug it into the slot in the back of the Mac. I did consider importing directly from the camera, but to do that you have to put the camera into Playback mode, select the AVCHD playback, and only then connect to the Mac via USB; if the camera doesn't give you dire warnings after the USB connection, iMovie won't be able to import anything: See http://www.amazon.com/review/R2KMTEI2HV1E8M/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_alt_1 The camera import dialog in iMovie 9.09 has a dropdown menu at the bottom of the dialog on the left allowing you to choose the AVCHD or MP4 selections from the camera.
I'm now moving to iMovie 10 which while it has its problems and editing is not very intutitive, is much faster at importing from the camera and exporting the edited movie. I use mChapters from the App Store to add chapters to the exported movie (after changing the exported file suffix from mp4 to m4v in the Finder). So for my purposes, I can pretty much use iMovie 10 for the same applications as I did with 9.09.
As suggested earlier on this Thread, upgrading to Mavericks and at least iMovie 9.09 will likely allow you to use your camera as you wish. iMoive 10 will give you expanded options with the camera.

  • PSE/PPE 12 restore - MP4 thumbnails and split files

I upgraded to PSE/PPE 12 from 10. The catalog was corrupt so needed to restore from PSE/PPE 10 backup. Now the tumbnails do not show and will not generate for all mp4 files. Also some files have split into stacked thumbnails but all pointing to the same file.
    Any ideas?

    Steveh02468
There could be problems in your restoration and/or conversion of catalogs going from 10 to 12, but that
Also some files have split into stacked thumbnails but all pointing to the same file.
is a classic annoying shortcoming of the AutoAnalzyer On. I am assuming that those "...some files have split..." refers to video clips.
If that is the case, in the Elements Organizer 12, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/Media Analysis and turn off all the options under that header otherwise your video clips will end up split into clips and those clips stacked.
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thanks.
    ATR
Also, how do you define the Elements Organizer 10 being corrupt? In what way to prevent you from a catalog conversion when you were in Elements Organizer 12?

  • CC 2014 Imported MP4 clips no longer work

I had been working on a project in CC and it contained several MP4 clips.  These work fine and have video and audio.
Yesterday, I updated CC Pro to CC Pro 2014.
I opened the project in 2014 and it told me I needed to convert the project file to the new format which I did.
Now, within 2014 all the MP4 clips show as "Media Offline".
If I try and import a new MP4 into the project within 2014, I get a message "File Import Failure - the file has no audio or video streams".
Fortunately, I still have the Pro CC version still installed and the MP4s are still fine in that version.
Within the Creative Cloud application, it lists my three installed apps (Premiere Pro CC, Premiere Pro CC (2014), Media Encoder CC (2014)) and says they are all up to date.
    I am running Windows 8.1
I would be grateful for any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Glenn

I just exported a MP4 video from within CC 2014 and then imported it back into CC 2014 and it worked fine.
Looking at the codec information for what did and didn't work:
    Clips that fail
    Codec: mp4v
    Name: MPEG-4 Video
    Clips that work
    Codec: avc1
    Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC

  • MP4 clips just won't preview in PremPro CS4

    Hi there,
I have a question about why I don't seem to be able to work with HD footage in Premiere Pro CS4.  I'm using footage shot on a Flip Mino HD (720) and although I can access the MP4 files just fine, and import them into PP ok, I can't get them to play, either in the Source window or the Project window.  When I tap the spacebar or press the play button, it plays a short blip of the footage, perhaps about a quarter second or so, then stops.  It's almost like it's trying to play it, but just can't keep it going.  During that quarter second I see correct moving video and I hear the audio, but it just stutters and won't keep playing.
I've watched the excellent tutorial about working with PP and Flip HD at DavTechTable (http://tv.adobe.com/watch/davtechtable/using-the-flip-hd-and-other-pocket-usb-cameras-with -premiere-pro-cs4-) and it seems to work just fine for him, but I just can't make it work.  I'm using the HDCAM EX 720 @ 30 setting he recommends in that tutorial, and following the exact same steps he suggests.
Interestingly, if I just accept the fact that I can't preview the footage, but I go ahead and edit it anyway, it works fine.  I mean, although I can't preview any clips, I can scrub them (fairly roughly... it's not smooth at all) and I can add clips to the sequence timeline, and do an Export, and that parts all works fine.
I tried editing the same footage using Final Cut Pro (on a different computer belonging to someone else) and it worked fine, so it's driving me crazy that Premiere Pro is giving me so much trouble.  I can edit regular DV (non-HD) footage on my computer with no trouble at all.
I'm starting to wonder if my computer is not up to spec, but it seems to meet most of the requirements listed here (http://www.specrequirements.com/software/adobe-premiere-pro-cs4-system-requirements) although I don't think I've got a 7200rpm drive.
    My specs are...
    2007 iMac 5, 20" running Snow Leopard 10.6.3
    2.16Ghz Intel Core2 Duo
3GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM  (the max I can put in this machine)
I have about 70 Gb of free space on the internal HD
I'm not using a separate scratch drive (should I be?)
    What else am I missing?
It really is driving me crazy that I can't get these clips to play in PP.  The same footage edits just fine in iMovie 09, so I can't understand why PP struggles with it, or an I doing something wrong?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

    Thanks Jeff,
I was wondering if it could be a lack of horsepower, and you seem to think that it might be...
What I don't really understand is where the lack of horsepower might be.  The specs I found online for PP-CS4 (which admittedly are "unofficial" since they aren't from Adobe's site, but I can't find them on the Adobe site since they've gone to CS5) say the following...
    Minimum Spec
    My Computer
    Multicore Intel processor
    I have a multicore Intel processor, a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo
    Mac OS X v10.4.11–10.5.4
I have the latest version of Snow Leopard
    2GB of RAM
I have more than this, 3Gb, the max I can put in this machine
10GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional hard-disk  space required during installation
Premiere Pro is already fully installed and runs fine with other media.  I have about 66GB of free space currently.
1,280×900 display with OpenGL 2.0–compatible graphics card
I have a higher res screen, 1680x1050, but I'm not sure whether the  graphics card is OpenGL 2.0 compatible... I assumed it was. How do I find out for sure?  It's an ATI Radeon X1600.
Dedicated 7200 RPM hard drive for DV and HDV editing; striped disk array  storage (RAID 0) for HD; SCSI disk subsystem preferred
I have the standard serial ATA drive that came with the iMac (I don't think it's 7200 RPM though...  could this be the issue?)
DVD-ROM drive (SuperDrive for DVD burning)
Not really relevant for my problem
Blu-ray burner required for Blu-ray disc creation
Not really relevant for my problem
QuickTime 7.4.5 software required to use QuickTime features
I have the latest version of QT and iTunes.
Apart from the 7200RPM drive, I would have thought my machine met or exceeded the required specs?  When you say that my Dual Core CPU is too weak for the task, what processor should I need in order to do this?  It seems fast enough for editing in other applications like iMovie and other video apps, although, as you say, Apple codecs treat the footage differently so that may be the reason.
I'm just trying to understand whether I truly don't  have the grunt to edit this video, and if not, why not?  The machine was purchased new in early 2007 and from memory, CS4 came out in September 2008...  I mean, I'm not trying to run it on a Pentium 3... I'm a little surprised to find that there might be such a hardware/software gap in 18 months that would make my computer unable to handle this footage.
I'll admit I don't really understand the intricasies of codecs and such, but from what you've said, the MP4 file needs to be decompressed on the fly by Premiere in order to show clips and to scrub?  And the CPU doesn't have the grunt to do that.
If I converted the clips to a different file type before I brought them into PP, what would be the bext format?  HDV?
So, I guess my next question would be, when I get my next computer soon (probably a new MacBook Pro i7 with 8GB RAM and a 7200RPM drive), will IT have the grunt to work with these H.264 MP4 files?  Or should I just accept that Premiere Pro is too sophisticated or fussy for these files and go back to Final Cut where I know it works?
Thanks again for your advice and suggestions...
    Chris

  • Export setting when mp4 clips are in timeline

I have a movie montague of different clips, including mp4 clips.. When I export, no matter what format I export in it makes the final movie all jittery, iall of the mp4 clips do not play properly, what format do I export in to make it play smoothly?

If your mp4 files are interlaced, and you output has a different field order, it will make the output jittery.
Check the mp4 field order, it should have one of three possible values: progressive (if it's this, there is some other problem), upper field first, and lower field first.
Whatever it is, see if it matches the output (which will also have one of those three field orders).
If they are both progressive, let me know and we can figure out other solutions.

  • Final Cut Error when moving .mp4 clip into sequence

I attempted to move an .mp4 clip into the sequence and it says "General Error" before Final Cut Pro Force closes itself.  In the error details it says something about a thread error whatever that means.  It will play fine in the Quicktime Player but will not open in Final Cut or allow itself to be moved into the timeline.  Anyone know why this is happening?
The .mp4 is in H-264 format and I have Final Cut Pro 7.0.3

Editing h.264 without conversion is not supported in FCP. You need to convert your clip(s) to an FCP edit friendly codec. What codec is appropriate is a function of what the properties of the source h.264 clip are.
You can find the properties for your clip by clicking on the clip in the FCP browser so that it is selected, then typing Command + 9. Either report what the item properties are for the clip, or take a screen shot and post the screen shot here if it is easier.
The reason that the clip plays back in Quicktime is that quicktime is a player, not an editor.
