Messed up with Terminal & bash

Misreading a paper on updating bash for security reasons, I mistakenly typed the following commands in Terminal:
- sudo mv /bin/bash /bin/bash_old
- sudo mv /bin/sh /bin/sh_old
Since I had not previously replaced the proper bash parameter files, I cannot use Terminal anymore, and when I launch it, I get the following message:
login: /bin/bash: No such file or directory
[Process completed]
I tried to use X11, but it quits right away.
Is there any solution to my problem, besides reinstalling the system from scratch?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /bin as the path, and give the files their original names.

Check your login items in the Users & Groups preference pane. Remove any that you don't recognize.

I've got some problems with adding users on a specific folder using the "information" window. It is the iPhoto Library folder. I give 2 users "RW" permissions on the folder, but only one is able to see the iPhoto Library. Just so you know : I did it on my computer, and it worked.
Here's what I'd like to do, and ONLY WITH THE TERMINAL :
1°) delete all users access except for one account ("GG" for instance) on the "iPhoto Library" and all its containing files and folders
2°) give the 2 accounts all rights on the folder and all its containing files and folders.
For the second part, I found this :
sudo chmod +a "UserName allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
/Users/Shared/iPhoto\ Library
Does it work well?

All what I read in this thread is bizarre (no offense here).
a/ If you want to block access to files within a folder to a specific Unix user, you don't have to recursively alter the permissions of all files within the folder. Just block the "execution" permission of the top folder and noone will be able to look into it. It's a 0740 permission

b/ What is your "requirement" first? You're talking us about a problem you have with your "proposed solution", but at first, we're not sure this is the best solution to address our problem !!!
What I understand is that you want to restrict access of someone to some iPhoto Library. Well ! That doesn't tell us much of the background situation.
You're telling us you want to add 2 users the permission to view this iPhoto Library folder.
Well, tell us first:
- Where is located that iPhoto Library folder
- How many users exists on your system already
- Why 2 users and not 3. This specific requirement requires more details given to us.
Globally, the Unix permission scheme considers Owner, Group and Others. Not one specific user. To create a permission mask for a specific user, you have to use ACLs (Access Control Lists), recently added to MacOSX.
As you want to use shell commands (aka Terminal, as you write), please check the "man pages" for chmod.
Now, if you want to share your photos with someone else - even on the same computer. You can simply turn "Sharing" on in your iPhoto Preferences; Use Fst User Switching to allow two or more users to have an opened session; and leave your account session on with iPhoto iconized. All users on your machine will be able to access your photos ... without messing up with file permissions schemes.
Tell us more then on what is your initial goal.

Don't group ncmpcpp with terminal in dockbarX

hi there,
perhaps somebody has an idea on how to accomplish the following:
i'm using mpd+ncmpcpp to listen to my music. the panel i'm using is dockbarX (dockX standalone) which groups similar windows in one single icon - just like windows' superbar.
this actually is just the way i like it - with the exception of ncmpcpp which of course gets grouped with other opened xterm-windows. but i'd rather have an extra icon for it.
can somebody share his thoughts on this? maybe specify an alternative default terminal-emulator for ncmpcpp? how can it be done? with a bash-script?
any help is welcome. thnak you very much.

dockX indeed supports .desktop-files to be pinned to it.
that's exactly the way i tried to accomplish this i created music.desktop which links to music.sh which again starts mpd+ncmpcpp. of course it gets grouped in the default terminal icon. and that's where i'm stuck i just do not have a clue on how to differentiate between those.
i have used urxvt for a while but i have to admit i have never figured out about its benefits^^ might it be easier to accomplish with urxvt?

Help with Terminal Please

Here's the deal. My cousin was playing on my computer when I was at a friends and decided to mess with terminal. Now it won't work. The simplest recover is to use TimeMachine to restore the system to just prior to the hacking.
Also Apple recommends NEVER using your computer casually as an administrator.
Letting other people play with your computer as a toy, when you are running an administrator account is begging for problems.
If you don't have a backup, ask your cousin exactly what he did, and reverse it.

Chmod for hd with terminal - right command?

I changed the permission for the hd for "other" from "r" to "-" (no permission) in the finder. After that the system does not start up. I think with terminal on the install cd I could solve this problem, but I do not know the right command.
(The partion on the hd is "PM-MacBook")

yes i did. it is in the applications folder. however, the default path when i open a shell won’t get me there and i don’t know how to change it. it should be /don’t forget to smash the state [my computer’s name]/macintosh hd/applications/browsers/firefox.app [or something to that effect].
also, when i drag profilemanager .app into terminal shell i get

-bash: /Applications/ProfileManager.app: is a directory
does this mean that profilemanager.app is a directory? if it is, how do i access it?
further, if /Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager is supposed to be where the command indicates, it isn’t. how do i get it there?

I'm pretty desperate and very frustrated. I try to open terminal, and all I see is a blank window with Terminal-login-80x24
Please, I cannot to anything. I have tried to open new windows, tried several login commands but there is NO response! No feedback and no action. Normal commands do not work

There is no scrollback either.

Go to the Terminal's preferences, and in the "Startup" section change the "Shells open with" option to "command" with "/bin/bash" as the command to run. Then try launching the Terminal again.
Alternatively, try launching the X11 application, which should launch xterm and allow you to access the shell.

Hi, last friday I tried to follow to the introductions of a tutorial.
It was about creating another batch in the dock named „recent apps“.
Here’s the order to fill in Terminal:

Unfortunately, I overlooked the response of my Terminal:
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token ` } ’
After I moved on with the last order,
killall Dock
the consequence is now a terrible red cast over all white areas in all of my windows (browser, apps, word, excel, etc.), especially buttons, icons and backgrounds! :-((
In teamwork with the APPLE-Support we only could contain, that creating a new guest user could help and everything was as good as before.
To be honest, I’d really like to find another way…not to install all the s*** I’ve just installed to my new MacBook Pro Retina. I’m updated, using OS X 10.8.2.
Is there anyone who can help? Or know how to reverse my Terminal-orders?!

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

Variables of one task is getting messed up with other tasks

I have one workflow (one subworflow is getting called by this workflow) which is using some global variables. The problem is that when more than one users are making simultaneous requests (not neccessarily at same time), values of global variables of one request are getting messed up with other's requests. Even at start of workflow I am assigning null value to these variables. I am using IdM 7.0. Can anyone provide any clue on this?

I am using a variable like "comments" and assigning null at start of the workflow like
<Variable name='comments'>
<null/>
</Variable>
Value of comments are cached somehow and in other request, when other user is opening the same form for making request, it is getting displayed in comment field. I have tried all the way of making null to this variable, but no luck. And it is not happening all time, it is intermittent and happens only in few cases.

I was messing arouond with the general settings and I turned on the voice (under General settings) and when the screen timed out, I can't get it to take my 4 number passcode to get into my ipad. Please help! I'm totally locked out!

I would appreciate any help I can get. I was just messing around with the general setting on the ipad (64GB 3G...1st edition ipad), and did not realize that if I went under the general settings and changed the option to turn "on" the voice over, that it would require a double click on everything automatically. I have my ipad set up to lock after 2 minutes on non-use, and when I tried to sign back in, it said that my 4 digit passcode was incorrect. Then I tried to double click on each number, and that didn't seem to work. The numbers 1-9 seemed to input ok, but a zero seemed to throw it off. I have no idea if it has anything to do with it, but any help on getting back in to my ipad, I would greatly appreciate it, and I will be turning off that stupid voice over off as soon as I can. I was just goofing off, and was not going to let it stay on permenantely, but I tried to go back under the settings immediately, and I couldn't easily find it, but if someone could help on just getting me back in....I would owe you a big favor!

Touch or tap the field that you want to use/select and it should get a box around it ; then double-tap that field to activate/type it. Once you've entered your password you can do the same (i.e. touch to select, double-tap to activate) to gradually get into Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn it off.
So to enter your passcode you first need to tap the 'slide to unlock' button to hightlight it (it should get a box around it), then double-tap it to unlock it. Then for your passcode tap the digit that you want and it should get a box around it; then double-tap that digit to type it; and similar for the other three digits in your passcode.
The manual (http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad) also that you should be able to switch voice-over off by connecting to your computer's iTunes :
Turn VoiceOver on or off in iTunes: Select iPad in the iTunes sidebar. In the Options section of the Summary pane, click Configure Universal Access. Select VoiceOver, then click OK.
So select Configure Universal Access at the bottom of the Summary tab and set Seeing to Neither

Is it possible to manage multiple apple ID's from 1 e-mail account? I don't want users of an ihone to mess about with the apple store

I am the telecom manager of a small company and I want to manage the iPhones in the company myself ( 7 pieces ) so that a user can not mess about with the phohe and the app store. I already found out how to block some of the functionality of the phone. I don't want to setup appleID's per users e-mail address because the confirmation of the apple ID will always be sent to the users of the phone.

Nope. You can only have one credit card attached to an account at a time. Its not that big of a deal to use two accounts, users do this all the time. Create the second account(UK Account) in iTunes on your computer...sign out of your Italian account first. Then authorize your computer for this new account: Store>Authorize this computer. Then sync your phone. Now, to switch accounts on your phone: Settings>Store...tap the ID shown...sign out...then sign back in with the ID you want to use.

iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst files, names and backups, on my ms XP 2003 laptop. I substituted a much smaller new Personal Folder -Contacts File, with a smaller list of phone numbers (4 only as a test) which successfully synced to the iPhone 4. The iPhone connects to the Skoda Octavia HandsFreeSystem OK (Bluetooth works fine), but now iPhone wont load the new Contacts as it did originally. However a family Nokia (never messed with) can connect properly. So must be the iPhone or more likely an Outlook.pst \ Contacts problem. Ideas?

After fiddling a little more, the following fixed my corrupted outlook.pst file:
1) I made a backup
2) In outlook under file, I exported the calendar to excel
3) In outlook under file, I imported the calendar back to outlook
And voila, it worked.
