Mixing HDV source material in FCP6

I currently shoot Canon HV30 HD minidv.  Works great.  I want to add another camera and have been considering a Canon HF M31 Flash Drive Camera.  Can I combine the 2 formats in the same timeline and with what project setting?

Thanks for the ProRes info.  As to converting the hdv material, should I capture native HD in FCP then export all material as ProRes?  Seems kind of convoluted.  Or are you suggesting opening a new project with ProRes settings and the import from camera and let FCP convert?
Really, am I trying to mix apples and oranges, or can this mixing of formats work for smooth editing and exporting of an HD project?

  • HDV and DV versions from a PAL sequence based on HDV source material

    Hi,
what is the best way to create DV ( for PAL) and HDV versions of the same source material ?
I have the source material in HDV and started by putting the clips into a PAL sequence. I did the trimming and fine-tuning in the PAL sequence and thought that I can just copy the final clips into a HDV 1080i sequence to get the HDV version .... Obviously this keeps the PAL resolution and consequently displays the picture scaled down in the larger HDV picture...
    Any hints ?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Do it the other way around. Edit in HDV and pout that into a PAL sequence, or simply export a PAL version when you're finished editing.

  • Best color workflow with hdv source material?

    Hi,
I am wondering about the best workflow for working with hdv material in color?
My first Color experience, I sent a AIC timeline (hdv source) to color, made my corrections, clicked NO when sending back to fcp when asked if I wanted the rendered timeline to be conformed to color render settings (apple pro-res) as I wanted the same sequence settings back in fcp.
I then tried to off/online back to my source hdv capture files, and therein arose the problems. Because color had renamed the files, the new names came up in the re-connect media window, not the hdv source. When ignoring these and locating the hdv source, the corrections were not attached.
After advice, tried onlining the original, locked edit, opening in color - files came up red (offline?), but could not apply the grades from the previous project anyway, as the whole program crashed before I could do anything?
Thoughts on workflow, theories on what I may have done wrong greatly appreciated.
Lastly, a lot of noise appeared in some clips I adjusted in color, which did not occur when making similar corrections to the same clips using the 3-way color corrector within fcp itself.
    How come?
    Thanks for listening,
    -Tom

Hi Tom, agree 100% with all of JP OWENS comments on this thread. This is very good advice.
Myself, coming from the dark side of a SONY HDV (HVR-Z1P) and DUMPING the SONY for a Panasonic DVCPROHD HVX-200 iFRAME HD format 66mbs and 110Mbs DVCPROHD 4:2:2 CODEC was primarily because when using COLOR on the HDV it was as dreadful as JP OWENS says it is.
As as has been mentioned in this thread, for working with HDV and trying to perform any reasonable grading using color.app you would indeed move it all to  PRORES422 by either:
    • ingesting it as proposed from the source as APPLE PRORES 422 or
    • ingesting and then BATCH CONVERTING in FCP (or go via a COMPRESSOR.app DROPLET - a favourite of mine) and THEN importing that into FCP.
It gives you these workflow advantages (again pointed out by Mr Owens):
    • iFRAME format editing in FCP is "faster" (not GoPs to play with in 25Mbs MPEG2 HDV)) and
    • workflow transcoding is faster. (many threads in these forums concerning exporting from an HDV timeline).
However to roughly quote Stu Maschwitz (his DV REBEL book) "+..converting DV to a near loss-less codec is a bit like carrying a golf ball around in a streamer trunk+".. applying this to HDV as well simply meaning that there is also NOT much colour information to work with in grading.correction applications like color.app.
Thus there is NO colour benefit from working in prores 422 from HDV source.
IN short, work in PRORES422 from your HDV source and your workflow will improve and efficiencies will be seen.

  • Unable to Capture SD DV Tape Using A HDV Source Camera

I am using a Sony HDR-HC9 HDV Camera as the source deck for capturing and importing numerous DV cassettes into a Premiere Elements 10 project, some which are SD and others HD. In both cases Premiere recognizes/controls the camera  but will only display/capture the HD source material.  Would like to know what the correct Premiere setup settings should be in order to capture both the SD and HD material. As information I can capture SD DV cassettes in other programs (Roxio) but would prefer to capture in Premiere if possible.
    Thanks

You need to set the camcorder to standard DV before the program will recognize the video from it as standard DV.
I don't know exactly how to do that on a Sony. On a Canon, there's a DV Lock setting. But your camcorder has a similar switch.

  • HELP I chose SD project preset instead of source material's HD and I have finished editing, can I change this?

So I have been working on this music video for a long time. I finished yesterday and today I tried to export the video. It had this strange black box around it and the quality was bad.
A little digging showed that the whole time my project presets were for some reason 640x480 SD instead of the 1920x1080 HD of my source video clips, so even if I tried to export in 16:9 HD, stretched 4:3 SD was the maximum quality I could get! The editing is very complex with lots of quick cuts, so there's no way I'm re-doing the whole thing, and I've already tried copying and pasting everything in the timeline to another project with the correct presets, and that doesn't work. Is there ANY way to fix this situation? I'm not too worried about transitions, if I lose those in the process it wouldn't really matter, but I want to save all my quick timed cuts between clips. I am using Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 64-bit. The source material is AVCHD 1920x1080p and a mix of 30p and 60p, and I want the final video to be the same but all 30p.
Thanks for reading and I really hope to solve this issue,
    Ben.

    Ben
Thanks for the update. Sorry that the new project was necessary. You did well making the transition from problem project to new.
However, you may have gotten into some trouble with your export settings. But, at least that can be corrected in the export of the new project and should not require starting from the beginning in yet another project. I am suspecting that your export is 1920 x 1080i 29.97 "M2T AVCHD" instead of 1920 x 1080p 29.97 "M2T AVCHD".
You appear to have used Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with the M2T H264 1920 x 1080p24. If you say that your export is 1920 x 1080 29.97, then you would have had to go under the Advanced Button of the p24 preset to customize the preset to 29.97 instead of 24.
But, now for the unexpected under that preset....if you use Frame Rate 24 frames per second, you have progressive settings. But, if you change the Frame Rate to 29.97 under the Advanced Button of the preset, you have interlaced settings. In the latter, note the fields for Upper or Lower for Field Order. That is interlaced video. Interlace video has fields, progressive video does not. And, if you do the export and read the properties of the export using a properties read out program, you confirm interlace and not progressive export. Confirm in project....
    Can you use the MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30 preset instead?
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • Correct ratio for sd dvd of HDV source?

My source material is HDV (16x9), So after I use Compressor to make my mpeg 2, for a SD DVD, it makes it 720 x 404, which is close, but all the material I can see including a converter I have for proper ratios for video, say a 16 x 9 sd dvd should be 720 x 405...which is correct? I know I can open up the mpeg 2 in QT Pro and change it to 405 but why does it come out of Compressor at 720 x 404? Which is right?

Thanks for info - I just use Compressor, drop on the 90-min SD DVD preset, make sure it's 16 x 9. It was just that it came out 404 not 405 (display ratio) as I was expecting....didn't know if that's a problem.
    Thanks

  • Dolby parameters only editable for PAL source material?

I noticed that the only editable Dolby setting is located under the MPEG 4 Pal Source Material folder. Does that mean if I render just a sound mix using that "editable" Dolby codec it shouldn't be played with NTSC? All of the other Dolby 2.0 choices (Example: under DVD Best Quality 120 minutes) cannot be edited. You're stuck with a boiler plate setting.

You can't edit any of the settings that come with the app unless it's been applied to your asset(s) in the Batch window. You can edit any setting you've created before or after it's been applied to your source.

  • Source Material error when burning disk image

Well, I've been haunting these forums for 10 days, finding answers to every darn problem under the sun I've encountered! (thanks folks, I've been near hysteria) Now I have yet another problem, and I cannot find an answer in the forums (sorry if it's there.)
I have built my movie in iMovie, imported to iDVD, created my disk image, played my disk image (worked perfectly), connected my brand new LaCie external burner, loaded Toast 6 Lite, dragged my mounted disk image icon into the window, popped in my Verbatim DVD+R and let 'er rip.
And, poo, I'm informed that 4 files are in an unsupported format and cannot be imported. EH? I thought the disk image kept all self-contained? I press onward, and hit burn. Churning, churning... and then this message:
"Could not record disc because there is a problem with the source material. Result code= -18774"
Trying to burn via Disk Utility doesn't work either. My mounted disk shows up, but when highlighted the burn button is grayed out. Only when I click on the .img file is the burn option lit.
Am I supposed to drag the .img file rather than the mounted little disc icon? PLEASE HELP. These movies were SUPPOSED to be Xmas presents... now I'm praying for Michaelmas gifts!
    TIA

ohmygosh. Lightbulb! I've been trying to burn the file_name one and not the file_name.img one. I assumed the point of mounting the file was to burn it, but it's only to preview it, yes?? So, I did that via Disk Utility, and it worked!! Only thing I can't figure is how to set the burn speed. I know slower is better, but can't find the place to tell it the speed. It never asks.
Toast still gives me the source material error. I do have the 'video' tab selected, and I've done the drag-n-drop method AND the 'add' method ('copy' is only for transferring data from one CD/DVD to another in my version, evidently). Toast doesn't allow me to grab the .img file, so I'm assuming IT wants the mounted file_name one? I'd still like to be able to use Toast to burn, so a solution to this would be appreciated. I'm using Toast 6 Lite, BTW.

  • How do I get my old Surround Mixer recording sources back?

I recently had my computer repaired where I basically had a complete overhaul. In the process they installed a second soundcard (the one that went with the new motherboard) alongside my original Creative Sound Blaster Audigy card (Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum eX). Before, when I would record audio into my computer, I opened the Surround Mixer software and in the record pulldown menu it showed all of the inputs as they relate to my Audigy interface (SPDIF, Aux In 2, Line In 2, etc.). Now when I open the Surround Mixer software, I only get generic options such as Analog Mix, CD Digital, Microphone, etc. and therefore I can't get any outside audio into my computer.
I figured the computer?was defaulting to the?new sound card so I disabled the onboard audio in my BIOS and then installed the Creative Sound Blaster Series 2 Driver. I clicked on the driver and it said that it needed to uninstall another driver that was already there. The install went a little funny and it got hung up a couple of times. Then, I couldn't get Surround Mixer to work at all so I went to the Creative website and installed Software Auto Update. I downloaded and installed all the critical components?but that also went a little funny. It took about three tries and it didn't seem like it actually finished installing, but when I checked on Auto Update again, it said that I was up to date and that everything had installed. I noticed at the beginning that it installed a new version of Surround Mixer but when I opened it later, it still had those same generic options, not the the ones that match my external interface.
What do I need to do to get my original settings back?

    >Re: How do I get my old Surround Mixer recording sources back?p audiodrome,
Is the external Audigy Dri've properly connected? Does the Plat Ex have the rear jacks? If so, can you record from the rear LineIn or mic jack and play sound files through headphones or speakers? What happens when you run the Creative Diagnostic? What does Device Manager show? Otherwise, yes, uninstall and reinstall the Creative software. If your install CD has a repair option, try that first. However, you may find you need to remove the Audigy from your PC, reboot without it, and then reinstall everything. Some Soundblaster cards don't play well with some integrated soundcards, so you may also want to disable the integrated soundcard in BIOS.

  • Ideal export format for hdv source movie edited in motion

Until recently, pretty much all completed projects I've done have been exported to NTSC-DV, but now I'm editing in HDV.
My most recent project was done with 1920X1080 HDV source footage editing on a 1280X720 canvas in Motion.
I like to export a web version and then a version of the project for posterity -- ie. the final best-quality (within reasonable final size) version of the movie that I can keep on hand for future uses as yet unknown.
So, my question then is: what's a good final format to export to? Is there any reason to export to HDV just because I've started with HDV?
    Thanks.

I use h.264 for a review copy. It will give you a much smaller file size. I think Pro Res is intended to be used as a lossless format to take footage between applications, correct me if I'm wrong. If all you need is a copy to show people, h.264 can give you excellent quality (it's used on Blu-ray discs).

  • Matching back to source material in the timeline?

How do I match back to source material from the timeline? I can't seem to find this info anywhere in the FCE help guide.
For example, I have a VA1A2 clip that I drag into the timeline. I start editing, and in the process delete part of the video portion of the clip, leaving me with only the audio A1A2 tracks. Now I want to get that video portion back. How do I get the video portion of the clip back in the timeline, in synch?
    Thanks!

Press the F key. Then edit it back in.
    All the best,
    Tom

  • I have H.264 source material

    Hi,
I have H. 264 Source material. I have to get it into FCP 7. I have compressor and I have Streamclip.
What should I compress it to? QT, AVI, DV or MPEg?

    ProRes LT.
    MPEG Streamclip tutorial: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=694
QuickTime is a container. The video inside could use any one of a number of codecs. Some, but not all work with FCP.
AVI is an obsolete Microsoft video container. It does not work well with FCP.
Unless you want low quality or your material is standard def. Avoid DV.
MPEG video codecs are Long GOP formats, as is H.264. Unsuitable for editing in FCP.

  • Need Flash Source Material

Hello, my partner and I are learning to use Flash. We have
the product, and we have a few beginner books to work with,
however, sometimes we are boggled when trying to come up with
original art or drawings, etc. so that we can manipulate the images
for animation. Is there a product or place on the web where we can
download a bunch of images (not photos) to use as source material?
Am I making sense to you?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • How do I put timecode on the storyline.  In FCP 7 there was a time code reader that read the actual TC on the source material.  There isn't one in FCP 10.1...Any recommendations???

How do I put timecode on the storyline.  In FCP 7 there was a time code reader that read the actual TC on the source material.  There isn't one in FCP 10.1...Any recommendations???

TC has not been lost...skimmer shows source TC.
Nanoflash external recorder via SDI on a Sony PMW-EX3.
Ok so Compressor will show source TC on an individual clip, good I didn't know this and it will be helpful.
My scenario.  I build a timeline with a whole days shooting involving many different clips and build a Sequence from that-editing out the off camera questions/mistakes etc.  In the past I would export with source TC with a Timecode Reader filter applied.  Now, it is a TC Generator filter that is available that starts from 00:00.
    1. Possible solution, forget the source TC since I have a timeline built with (counter) TC on it and send that to client or get Apple to add it in the future.
    2. Apply TC Generator on a clip by clip basis and manually change the TC to match source material.  Probably too, much effort though.
