My Pismo Stalls at Startup

I have a Powerbook G3/400 Pismo with 512MB RAM running OS X 10.3.9. When I turn on the Powerbook, I get the familiar Apple logo, then the spinning circle, then the screen turns blue, then grey and then the Powerbook just stalls.
But when I boot in safe mode, the Powerbook starts up normally.
Could someone tell me what could be the problem?
Thanks,
Ken

Ken:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you boot into Safe Mode next time, log in, empty that Trash if there is any, then Restart normally.
You can try resetting the PRAM:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
Run Repair Disk:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report back if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
If you don't already do so, run regular maintenance procedures. Here are a few links that have ideas and links to resources:

  • Macbook pro stalls during startup

My macbook pro with Yosemite stalls during startup.  I've tried Command R and ran disk utility.  The disk is ok.  I've zapped the RAM but it still stalls about 25% of the way through the startup process.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac stalls during startup

My PowerBook currently stalls during startup (a dark grey apple on a light grey bground with a circling sun). I have tried holding down the C key as my Mac starts up and then clicking the hard disk icon and then the right arrow (my Mac just stalls on the grey apple again once I've done this). I have also tried Disk Utility and the Apple Hardware Test. Neither identifies any errors, except when I try to Repair disk permissions Disk Utility reports an Internal Error - 'Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue'. I have tried restarting the process many times but I always get this same message.
The problem began when I attempted to export a QuickTime movie in QT Pro as an MPEG-4. I attempted to resave the MPEG-4 as a QT movie afterwards. QT then created a gastronomically huge .mov file when I attempted to do this. A file in the region of 32GB! (It should have been less than 1MB). My computer crashed after it told me my hard disk was almost full (there is now only 2.7GB free). This has happened to me before but normally what I can do is restart my Mac and then delete the offending .mov file, however this time I can't even get into my Mac to do this.
I don't want to format my hard disk as I did this only last week after a problem with OS Tiger that I subsequently deleted and reverted back to OS Panther. I have created a lot of work since then that I haven't backed up anywhere else.
If anyone has any ideas… I'd be v v grateful

Leo: The procedure you've been using to Repair Disk is exactly right. If you wanted to Repair Permissions, though, you'd have to be able to boot to your hard drive first. Because you're unable to boot to your HD, and yet you mentioned trying to Repair Permissions, I pointed out that under present circumstances that won't be possible. Sorry if my post was confusing.
IF your FireWire hard drive has a bootable OS on it — which you'd have to have installed on it or cloned from your internal drive — you can boot the PB to that drive. Connect the drive to the PB, turn the drive on, hold down the Option key, select the external drive as the startup voloume, and allow startup to complete. Assuming that the overly-full internal hard drive then mounts on the desktop normally, you should be able to open it up in the Finder, locate the monster file, trash it and empty the trash. This is all academic, though, if there's no bootable OS installed on the external drive — which you'll know is true if it doesn't appear as a selectable startup volume when you hold the Option key down at startup.
In that case, it might be wise to look for another Mac to which you could temporarily connect your PB in FireWire Target Disk Mode. You could then trash the monster file by accessing your PB hard drive from the host Mac. This could be accomplished in five minutes at an Apple dealership, using a demo Mac on the showroom floor, if you have no other options and can find a helpful dealer. I propose this option because I don't know where to suggest you look for a bootable CD that allows Finder access, unless you have the hardware, software, and knowhow to burn one. I don't believe I have one myself. I don't need one, because my backup hard drives are all bootable.

  • PB G3 Pismo-Stalls, Hard Disk Disappears

[NOTE - This message originally posted in Older Hardware discussion group. One response appears at end of original message.]
    PB G3 firewire (Pismo)
    OS 10.4.2
    Fastmac G4 550 processor
    576 mb RAM
Western Digital 60 MB HD (replacing Toshiba 40 mb HD that I thought was problem)
    DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
The computer starts and works fine for a while until, without any discernible trigger (except maybe physically moving the PB), the PB stalls (twirling rainbow colored disk). Sometimes it first stalls in one application (so I can switch to other apps or the finder using the Command-Tab keys), but eventually it stalls in all apps. Force Quit option (keyboard or menu-activated) does not function. The only option is to shut down and restart. Sometimes it restarts, other times just a flashing question mark in the floppy disk icon.
If I happen to be in Word when the stall occurs (or is about to occur), I first get a dialague box telling me Word can't read from or write to the open file, saying there must be a bad network or floppy disk connection. I can usually quit Word when that dialogue appears, but restarting Word does nothing to fix the problem. Instead, I have to restart the PB.
With the flashing "?," I can hear the HD trying to start spinning again and again, but nothing happens. As noted below, starting with Diskwarrior has at least once resulted in Diskwarrior not being able to find the HD.
    ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS
Run the latest version of Diskwarrior. Does not solve the problem. Sometimes, Diskwarrior cannot even find the hard disk.
Replace the HD - did that switching the Toshiba for the Western Digital drive. The Toshiba works fine in a Firewire HD case. The problem can't be HD.
Reinstall OS X and applications - done multiple times, both archive and clean installs.
Make sure RAM is properly seated.
    Reset PRAM.
    WHAT'S WRONG?
I think the problem is hardware related (other than HD).
Any suggestions for what to look at and in what order? For example: G4 processor bad; RAM bad (but symptoms don't seem consistent with that); power/charge card bad; something with the heat sink; something with the cable that attaches to the HD.
Is there a way of checking these short of replacing them one by one?
Appreciate any help I can get.

    Ken,
    Welcome to the discussions!
A very good description of the problem! You obviously have covered a lot of territory troubleshooting this issue and it certainly appears to be a hardware-related.
I think you have fairly well isolated the problem as I see it:
    - stall (spinning beach ball) that eventually occurs in all apps;
    - a restart that produces the flashing '?';
    - DiskWarrior's occasional failure to find the HD.
I would suggest you have a bad HD ribbon cable or a bad HD IDE bridge on the logic board (or some other issue on the logic board) that develops with heat.
Since you have a FireWire HD with a known-good HD, why don't you use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone of your internal HD on the FW HD, then boot to the FW HD and run from it and see if the same issue develops.

Thanks for the quick response. I will try what you suggested.
I also was thinking that this may be a heat-related problem, and wonder if maybe I did not put enough - or too much - heat sink compound between the heat exchanger and the processor board. Could it be that simple?
One item I omitted from my original post: before I replaced the Toshiba HD, I noted, when I turned the sleeping PB on its end to carry in my laptop bag), the PB would almost always be stalled when I woke it from sleep, requiring a restart (and too often a directory rebuild using Diskwarrior or an archive

Rebuilt the directory using Diskwarrior, but on the last step received the following error message:
A disk malfunction occurred while writing the replacement directory to the disk. Rebuild this disk again."
Also, this rebuild showed a large number of repairs. When I ran Diskwarrior this morning, it showed there would be no changes to the directory. I've barely used the PB since this morning's rebuild.

  • DW CS3 ( Version 9) stalls at startup and is fricking slow

    Hi,
I never know what to expect from DW. I used this program since version 3 and basically it kept on getting worse specifically on the Mac.
Anyhow, as I assumed, CS3 on the Mac is probably the worst version as it's  slow and buggy and now stalls for about 30 seconds at startup (having that color ball spinning). I deleted almost 50% of my websites from the "Manage Sites..." list and I don't use extensions or any test servers. it just needs to work as a simple HTML/ CSS editor.
Any clues on how to bring this ridicules software to work?
    Thanks

  • Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
    The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

FCP 5.03 consitently stalls ( i have to manually quit) on startup. I can see that it is loading pluggo audio plugins when this happens. I don't worry about it - as long everything finds what it needs and there's no conflicts.
I think once Peak asked me for the location of one of the filters I'd moved - I pointed it to it, then it was happy.
As long as fcp is stable, I'm happy.

  • Pismo won't startup without resetting PMU

    Hi
I have a 400MHz G3 powerbook with 256MB RAM running Mac OS 10.3.9 very successfully. My problem is that if I shut it down it won't complete startup again unless i reset the pmu (holding down the reset button on the back panel for 3 secs) every time. It does the chime but the screen doesn't come on. The main battery is good (it lasts 2 hours or so) and as far as i can tell the PRAM battery is good too (i tested the voltage across it and it reads 6.77 volts or 3.39 volts depending which of the 3 connections you read). I tried charging the PRAM battery without the main battery installed and it didn't go up at all so i assume it's fully charged.
    Anything else i could try?
    thanks

    mrbump,
There are two or three hardware components that can cause this issue:
    - The most common is a failed backside L2 cache. When booted to 10.3.9, see if the System Profiler reports 1MB of cache. If you have a bootable 9.x CD or 9.x on the HD, first shut down, then boot to 9.x. If there is a problem with L2 cache, you will get a dialogue during startup; this test does not run through a restart.
    - The other two possibilities are a bad CPU or logic board and I do not know how to determine this.
If you have your Hardware Test CD that came with new Pismos, give it a run.

  • Mail stalls on startup.

Ok, have been using mail 2.1 for quite awhile with no problems. Yesterday, it ran into a brick wall. I launch the app, it automatically starts to download my email from my pop account. The spinning circle (not SPOD - the normal progress circle) appears in the mailbox pane, I get ONE message "[email protected]" appears with a 'Message status-Undeliverable" subject, and then the progrma stalls. I left it running for 5 hours, and it never got past this - it never stopped trying to recieve, it just sits there spinning.
I logged in to my mail account (doteasy) using webmail and there are 22 pages of new messages.
When I try and quit mail, the active window goes away, but the app icon doesn't. In other words, the application refuses to quit, however force quit does NOT show it in red/not responding. I can force quit, but that is the only way out.
I moved the .plist to the desktop, and the program gave me the initial screen fine, and was able to quit fine, but of course, I lost all my thousands of archived messages. Not an option. (moved the .plist back, problem returned)
I ran 'repair disk permissions', I ran the weekly/daily/monthly scripts. What other digital chicken bones should I shake rattle and roll to return this program to functionality??

    Brian,
Properly done, removing the plist does NOT result in the loss of messages, but you would need to be careful.
With Mail not running, hold down the Shift key while clicking on the Mail icon to launch. Tell us the result of this, as this allows Mail to open without trying to open any particular message or mailbox.

  • IBook stalls on startup

So this started the other day out of the blue. Right now, when I press the power button, I hear nothing for a few seconds, then the fain whirs onto full blast. The screen doesn't turn on, and nothing else happens. Every once (like 20 tries or so) it gets past this and the screen turns on, but this doesn't always boot. It has frozen once while booting, and once while the screen was still all gray.
I have tried resetting the PMU, I have tried booting plugged in with no battery, I have tried booting unplugged with no battery, I tried taking out my extra RAM (it's still out), and I have tried the Mac OS X boot CD. The Boot CD worked once, then it froze a few minutes into operation and I got back to this tirade, and I am unable to eject it by holding down the trackpad button.
    basically:
    Power is pressed
    No startup sound
    no video
    fan on full blast

    Uh oh...
Could be a Logic Board. At any rate it sounds like it may be time for a service call...
    Good luck.

  • MacBook stalling at Startup

Since shutting down my computer yesterday, I have not been able to get to the log in screen. I've done a disk repair with the startup disk. I'm not able to start in safe mode. I did a arcive and install and that did not work. I have not been able to open it in single user mode either. It goes through part of the process and ends with Load of /sbin/launched failed, errno 88
    help would be appreciated.

    Try resetting Parameter RAM ?
Hold Apple/Option/P/R at start and wait for three chimes before letting go
If that fails; boot from the install DVD and hold down D then run a complete set of Hardware tests

  • Help: Pismo with G4 startup trouble

I upgraded my G3 Pismo to a 550mhz G4 a few years ago, and it's been great. Now, when I start it up I get the grey screen w/ the Apple logo and the spinning "clock", then a flat grey screen that doesn't change. At the Apple store a rep suggested that I replace the hard drive, which I did, but that didn't do it. I'd love to keep it going - it's a good jobsite computer.
    Here are some other facts:
It will start up from Disc Warrior into the DW program.
For a while, it would restart AFTER running Disc Warrior, but not now.
I've zapped PRam, reloaded 10.4, reloaded 10.3, repaired permissions.
Does this sound like a hardware issue? A part that is user - replaceable?
    Suggestions please, and thank you.

Check out this FAQ, and see if any of this applies to you.
Try reinstalling your operating system with the discs that came with your iBook, and if you're still having problems, give Apple a call, and let them know that you most likely have a hardware defect in your iBook.
They are required to repair this for you at no cost.

  • MBP stalls on startup if ethernet is connected

    Hi there,
I've a 15" MBP from early 2009 (5,1) running Mountain Lion which is acting flaky, especially on startup. It clocks at 2.4GHz and carries 8GB of RAM.
Specifically, the MBP gets stuck on the grey startup screen with a spinning "wait" graphic if I plug in my ethernet cable. It sometimes happens if I plug in a FW disk or USB device too, but it ALWAYS gets stuck when I plug in the cable.
I've searched around a bit, but this seems to be a relatively obscure issue. Does anyone here have an idea, or better yet, a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • DVDSP4 stalls on startup splash window

Has anyone else run into this issue? I start the application and the splash page comes up and then it just sits there. I've walked away, thinking maybe it's just taking a while to start up (as it sometimes will) and come back 30 minutes later and it's still not opening a project. I go to the dock and control click to force quit and it doesn't say that the program is not responding. Any ideas?

So, I went into my admin account and looked at more of my console logs and found this from today:
