My T420 Review + Warranty Experience + Accessories & Upgrades

I received my T420 earlier this week and wanted to let everyone know my experiences with the machine itself as well as some accessories I purchased for it. You will see comparisons to the T400. The T400 is my SO's machine. Machine details for both are in my sig. The T420 shipped with a 500GB HDD & 4GB (4x1) RAM. This review is mainly about the T420 with the HDD installed, but with 8GB of RAM.
A little about me
As a student I mainly care about battery life, boot/ resume time, and system stability. Stability is very important to me because I take my class notes on my computer and we take exams on our computers as well. If I have computer issues during an exam, I could receive a worse grade or even fail. I fell in love with Thinkpads and the trackpoint the first time I ever used one years ago back in the era of 266MHz processors. While I have owned other laptop brands (Gateway, Acer, Compaq) it was soley because of price. I am happy to have a Thinkpad to call my own again.
For a while, I considered an x220, the x220t, and the W520. I decided I could not live with the screen resolution on the x220, the 3yr Think Pad protection + on-site was too much on the x220t ($459 vs $259 for other Think Pads), and I did not want to haul around the extra weight and size of the W520. This is my third 14" ThinkPad. I bought the machine during a sale where there was a free upgrade to 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM. At the same time there was an extra 5% off on any T series. With those deals and the educational discount, I felt the T420 was an excellent deal.
Summary
Pros: Speed; Battery life; I do not have a screen door screen; warranty service is great; Keyboard is a joy to type on.
Cons: Louder than the T400 (T420 seems to have smaller heatsink). Mainboard, Keyboard, and Palm rest had to be replaced. Keyboard needs to be replaced again. Smelled bad when taking out of box. 14W sleeve is too big.
Review
When I unboxed the machine the fist thing I noticed was a horrible smell that I can only describe as "new computer smell" it was a mixture of ozone plus melted plastic. The 9 cell sure is a big battery. I only have a 6 cell on my T400. The 9 cell on the T420 sticks out about the same amount as the 6 cell on the T400 does. Machine feels like a good weight and very solid. Weighs 5.2lbs without the power brick (with HDD + 8GB RAM, Optical Drive, and 9 cell battery).
When I pressed the power button the first thing I noticed was that I could hear the fan. The fan on the T400 is almost inaudible. On the T420, you can hear the fan is there, but it is a quiet and soft fan noise. The T420 seems to have a smaller heat sink compared to the T400. The machine boots fast even with the HDD installed taking only about 80-90 seconds or so after applying all Windows updates. Display resolution of 1600x900 is very sharp and useful for putting documents side by side. My external monitors are 16:9 displays (2x Dell U2211h) so it is nice to have matching aspect ratios. I would prefer 16:10, but 16:9 at 1600x900 is enough pixels. Optimus works fine and allowed me to have both of the U2211h at 1920x1080 and the internal display on at the same time. I had one monitor connected through VGA and the other over display port. I do not see the screen door effect that some people have had issues with on these screens. I was very worried about the screen door, so I am glad not to have it.
I mainly use my computer to run Office, One Note, and write emails. I rarely do any gaming on my laptop. I do some image editing (GIMP, Inkscape) and both programs run fine with great speed. Machine sleeps and hibernates fine. I get great range and speed with the internal wireless card that is better than most people. Ran a graphics intensive benchmark and Optimus works great. Battery life seems amazing so far. I only used about 10% in an meeting that lasted over an hour. I was only typing during the meeting so I had the brightness turned down to 2. If I wanted to I could probably use just the battery and leave the adapter at home.
Accessories
I bought the machine with the 14W Sleeve (57Y4294). The sleeve is gigantic and does not fit right. I think it was designed to hold the machine with a 9 cell battery + the slice + the power adapter. I will check later, but I think I could probably fit the T400 and the T420 into the sleeve at the same time and it would still have extra room. I may return the sleeve and buy a different one as I was hoping for a better fit. I have no idea why they offer the 15W Sleeve during the ordering process as the 14W is huge.
Upgrades
I added an extra 4GB of Samsung RAM, an Intel 320 SSD in the 160 GB size, and an AKE USB 3.0 Expresscard 34. I planned to use the USB 3.0 express card with the 500GB drive in an external enclosure as a backup for both the T420 and T400. If I was just looking for the T420 I would simply have used the eSATA port as I feel eSATA is probably faster than USB 3.0.
The RAM works great with the factory installed Samsung RAM. The RAM was easy to install, since the cover is on the bottom of the machine. If you are upgrading both RAM slots, the other slot is under the keyboard. The HMM shows the keyboard as being held in with only one screw so it is probably easy to upgrade.
I bought the 320 because it is supposed to be as reliable as the X-25M. My Intel 320 SSD died on me within 12 hours of installing it into the machine. I experienced the 8MB bug, where the drive dies and reports as unformatted and 8MB in size, normally after an "unsafe" shutdown (as in holding down the power button/ sudden loss of power). There has been talk of this bug on the Intel Forums since June, see this post or just Google for more details about the issue many 320 owners are experiencing. My replacement 320 is here now, and I will see if I can get >12 hours of use out of it. The Intel Data Migration software did work well and it cloned the drive over and resized the partitions just fine. I was able to see speeds of up to 250MB/sec with the SSD internally. I regret purchasing the 320, and if the second dies on me I will ask for a refund and buy something else.
The AKE USB 3.0 Express Card has the NEC USB chipset. These are known to get around 180MB/sec when mounted on a motherboard and connected to a fast SSD. I saw speeds of up to 185MB/sec when connected to the Intel SSD. I am happy with the Express card. It sits flush in the Express Card slot. It does look ugly with the extra USB cable for power, but that is necessary to supply full power to a USB 3.0 device.
Warranty Service (2 Keyboards, 1 Palm Rest, 1 System Board)
When I purchased the 3yr warranty with Think Pad protection and on-site service, I never thought I would need to use it in the first week. I notice that the Trackpoint seemed a little jumpy when I first started using the machine. The first night I had the machine I was working on a project, something caused the machine to hang and it shutdown. On reboot, the machine refused to POST. My first thought was that I seated the RAM improperly, so I took that out. It did not help. I reseated the SSD, nothing. Tried the original HDD, nothing. Put the SSD back in. The keyboard had the microphone mute, speaker mute, and caps lock lights on when the machine was off. That seemed odd to me. Next day, I called up service center. It said it was in Atlanta, Georgia, but guy I spoke to had such a heavy accent I had to have him repeat everything 2-3 times. He had me run through some things and decided that the keyboard was fine, but that the system board needed to be replaced.
A friendly Tech came out and replaced the system board. System booted off of the tech's usb floppy to run a utility. Lights were still on the keyboard. Keyboard did not work. I grabbed a USB external keyboard + mouse combo from my desktop and plugged it in. USB mouse and keyboard worked fine. Tech attempted to boot into Windows. System did not recognize SSD on first two boots, third boot it worked. Odd beeping sound in Windows, put volume on mute. Laptop keyboard still did not work, and touchpad was very jumpy. Tech called to order keyboard + palm rest (touchpad) and I ran ThinkVantage Toolbox scan. Machine passed. Reactivated Windows. I then used the machine for a few hours, and then hibernated it. When I came back, it acted like the SSD was not there.
Tech arrived the next day with Keyboard + palm rest. I was very happy that the part was overnighted. New keyboard installed. Seemed like everything was working. System refused to boot off of the SSD. Put in HDD, system boots fine. I ran ThinkVantage Toolbox scan and the machine passed. A few hours after the tech left, I noticed that my J & K keys were acting odd. Turned out keyboard screw was hitting underneath them and making it hard to press down. See this thread for more. Called tech support, guy I spoke with did not have an accent and seemed like a native English speaker. Happy to have someone I could understand on the phone. Backedout the keyboard screw about halfway and now I can type normally. Tech support is concerned that the keyboard may have been damaged by the screw, so they are sending a new keyboard and a screw kit. Scew kit is backordered, so for now I just have to wait.
I have been happy with the on-site service because it is much faster than having to ship off a machine to have it repaired. I am going to look into upgrading the depot warranty on my T400 to on-site. I am chalking up the problem with the system board and keyboard to the bathtub curve and I do not see these as major issues. I wish that they would have shipped both a keyboard and a system board.
Overall I am happy with my T420 and very happy with the warranty service. I would feel confident recommending this machine with the warranty to family and friends.

Hi nibs,
Nice review.  Thanks.
That screw deal is very strange.  I wonder if the tech mixed up two screw sizes? Maybe there's a short one somewhere just barely hanging on.  Do the screw holes on your machine have a size # next to them.  Just curious.
@ seasidegator, your link doesn't work as is.  The "." at the end of the sentence got included in the link.

  • My experience with memory upgrades (NB305 & NB505)

I just wanted to share my experience upgrading my NB305 and NB505 Toshiba netbooks from 1GB to 2GB RAM.  I ordered the memory from Crucial Technology on 1/1/12 and received it today (1/6/12).  The memory module for the NB505 (DDR3) cost $15, and for the NB305 cost $25, with free shipping.
I'm not a techie by any means, but swapping out memory is pretty straightforward.  There's only one screw holding on the cover for memory access on the NB305.  For the NB505, two screws.  Loosen the screws and gently pry the covers up.  A little resistance is normal because there are small tabs also holding the covers in place.  The memory modules are held by small clips that can be moved with your fingernail, and the memory come out easily.  The new memory is also easily inserted.  It's not totally idiot-proof (is anything?), but it's pretty close.
After putting memory access covers back on, I booted up both machines.  The only glitch I had was that I had not powered down the NB505 altogether but had it in hibernation state, so it could not restore and just had a blank screen.  All I had to do was to hold down the power button until all lights went off, and then I was able to power up normally.  Both the NB305 and the NB505 powered up without any more problems.
I don't have any benchmarks or anything like that, but I noticed the difference in performance on both machines right away.  Both netbooks are running Windows 7 Starter edition, so those users who are warning that you cannot upgrade memory with Windows 7 Starter edition are totally wrong.  Performance is a lot snappier, and I wish that I had upgraded the NB305 two years ago when I first bought it.  This little upgrade is well worth the money.
MY ONLY WARNING:  NB505 users should make sure they get the right kind of memory.  Some memory is DDR2, and some memory is DDR3.  Look on the serial number label on the back of your computer, and if there is a D3 in the upper right hand corner, you need to get the DDR3 memory.  Otherwise, get the DDR2 memory.

gablueskies thank you for the info , i think even i need to upgrade my netbook.
I own a NB505-N508BL , it doesnt have a D3 written on its corner of the serial label, it has XF , i assume i should buy the DDR2 memory for the upgrade right ?

  • THE WORST experience on a upgrade EVER..Will tell EVERYONE I CAN

    To Whom this may concern:
To Start I got my Sunday Paper and there is an ad in the paper to upgrade your I Phone to and I Phone5 S for $1.00.
I know this is usually too good to be true and there is always hidden fine print were they extend your contract or you still have to pay more than a $1.00
Well I decided to look online at bestbuy.com and see if I could do it on line. And for ATT you cannot you must go in the store. That was fine with me I would just go by there. I did see online that you could see if your phone could upgrade.
So I entered my number, zip code, and last four of social.
It said congratulations you are eligible for a early upgrade with a 2 year extension.
No problem I do not mind extending my contract for 2 years. SO then I said I still better call the store and ask them for sure if there were no hidden fees. So I did, she said yep, as long as I traded in my I Phone 5 and I was up for the upgrade I could exchange my phone and extend 2 years and I would just pay the 1.00 plus I had to pay taxes. NO Problem...
Great, so I ask my boss, can I take off early he said yes, but again I called again I did not want to go up there if they did not have any phones in stock, she said yes they have them. I said thank you I was on my way.
The BEST Buy mobile in our mall is where I went. I went inside and told them my story so far, and they again said no problem. He took my phone, the woman that I spoke too on the phone asked what color iphone5s I wanted I told her I did not mind because I was going to get a charger too.
She went and got me the gold one.. No problem. He takes off my phone case and screen protector, and says mine is in perfect condition. He starts moving my information from my phone to the new phone. He asks for my information and I give him my drivers license. He then says go look at the new cases and pick one out..
He the calls be back over and says great news the upgrade is 149 and my phone is 199. So I have a 50 credit. WOW I was excited.
I didn't find a phone case that I liked so he said no problem he would give me a gift card for the difference. WOW this Great.
GREAT customer service.. So now it is time for me to come over and sign. I sign the first form and he tells me I would get copies of it all when we were done.
The manager comes over and says, great you are getting a new phone.. I said yes I am pretty happy. BUT.. Then this happens.
He looks down and tells the representative, this woman is not up for a upgrade she must be 300 for the phone.. I AM LIKE WHAT.. are you serious.. but is done. we are ready to go...
the apologized over and over.. but I was not going to get the phone.
I was so frustrated.. He said the word, "early" upgrade mean half off, and "complete" upgrade means $1.00. NO one ever told me that.. I even called to confirm, TWICE...
He then tries to give me back my phone, and I said where is my screen protector, "oh that's in the trash I already took it off" well go get it..
He then spends about 20 mins trying to put the screen protector on, and it is too beat up I guess.
So then someone recommends that they get an old I phone 4 case out of the back room and they can use scissors and put it on my phone.. Now they are cutting an old cover and 20 more mins goes by and they cannot get it to work..
I am like.. I have to a screen cover for my phone. So now she says.. I guess we can use our gift card that our branch got. And we can just buy you one. OH MY GOSH.. are you serious. I am so mad at this point.. you have got to be Kidding me... THIS IS INSANE....
SO yes these two employees go and use their store gift card they had gotten and went and bought me a cover. THIS IS NUTS...
I am beyond upset. I will be telling everyone I know and all of FACEBOOK too of all the things that went on today. I cannot believe this. I just wanted an upgrade on my phone that I was told twice I would get.. Instead I had the worst experience I have ever had in my life with customer service and policy. And working in retail myself, there was no, lets help the customer. Terrible. I expect some kind of response from all of this.

    BH

    Hello BH,
Wow! It’s disheartening to read that we were unable to assist you in taking advantage of our current iPhone 5s promotion.  I’m due for an upgrade myself and if the price changed mid-transaction on me, I certainly wouldn’t be happy about it either. I’m sure that this was a frustrating experience, especially as it started out so smoothly. Upgrading a phone should be a fun experience, and I’m sorry to hear that this wasn’t the case.
I’m glad to know we were able to transfer you back to your original iPhone 5 and provide a new cover as the previous one was out of commission. Regardless, I’m sure that this wasn’t something you were expecting as it sounds like you were close to signing the paperwork necessary to complete the upgrade.
Concerned, I pulled up our current promotion listed on our website. After my preliminary investigation, I’ve found a reason that may explain why your phone was deemed ineligible for this promotion.  According to our promotion’s offer details, a customer must be eligible for a new 2-year agreement. With early upgrades, a new 2-year contract isn’t always required.  Also, your carrier may have additional requirements, meaning that your specific plan with them may have prohibited your phone from this promotion.
Having said this, I want to investigate this further and have sent you a private message which you may view by logging into the forum and clicking on the envelope icon in the upper-right corner.
    Thanks for posting!

  • Can you please share your experience in implementing / upgrading the Primavera EPPM R8.3?

    Hi,
In our company various versions (V7, R8.1 and R8.3) of Primavera being used in various locations. To bring all the location to a common platform, management has decided to implement  / upgrade Primavera EPPM P6 R8.3 and also planned to integrate Primavera P6 R8.3 EPPM with Oracle (EBS) Projects application . Hence, If any of you implemented Primavera P6 EPPM R8.3 or upgraded the earlier versions to Primavera P6 R8.3. Please share your ideas and also the pros and cons of implementing R 8.3 EPPM. For your information we are going to have SQL database since all the existing databases are in SQL.
Please share your ideas and experiences.

    Hi,
we have done a lot of implementations and migrations to the P6 EPPM R8.3 from different former versions and this is working fine. the dbsetup does a good job.
A good way in my point of view is to set up a new P6 EPPM R8.3 system with a new PMDB Instance which will keep the configurations so that you easily can migrate or exchange the instances. Always remind to have a validated backup of any instance before migrating.
Before migration you should mind the following points:
The source version of the old P6 PMDB instance is:
P6.2.1 or before => first you need to migrate it to P6 V7.0 before you can migrate it to P6 R8.3
P6 V7.0 => check if you have used P6 WebAccess: if not okay, else check if you used jackrabbit (look for migration tool), Workflows (close all before migrating); Check if using Jobservice XER-Export (no longer available); Jobservice Batchreport (only Workaround available see Knowledgebase); Risks in the P6 Client (need to be manually migrated)
P6 R8.0 to R8.2 => Using Extended Schema, Enterprise Reporting Database, own BI Publisher Reports => Check stept to be taken for migration
    Other questions are:
Which authentication method will you use (native, LDAP, SSO)? If not using native and you want to connect the BI Publisher then you need also to use that authentication there.
The migration itself is pretty easy if you take care that all sessions are closed (no users or unclosed primavera sessions settings  on that instance, stop all Applications, interfaces or Services connected to the instance. Cleanup your refrdel_deletes, logical_deletes and (if used before), extended Schema tables.
Then you can migrate with dbsetup, use additional Service Packs and Fixpacks (actually Service Pack 1) on the instances and then you can connect them into the environment by adding it to the P6 Configuration.
I mentioned you don't want to put all data into one final PMDB-Instance.
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • HT1349 5W power adapter, warranty for accessories purchases seperately

I purchased the Apple 5w power adapter from Target in Jan 2013.  The device stopped charging my sons Ipod.  It is not the outlet, cable or the Ipod as they charge with the power adapter for my Iphone.  equally my iphone can not charge with the defective power adapter.  How does one go about getting warranty access for the 1 year as this item is defective.  Apple store isn't that close and online/support doesn't bring up anything for accessories or when searching by the SN of the item.
I am putting this in the iphone 4s community as there isn't a selection for power adapters or accessories in general.

While the items you buy separately have a 1 year warranty on them, I have found that my local Apple store seems to ignore teh purchase of the separate item, and includes them under the iPhone warranty.  When I bought my iPhone, I got just the iPhone, then 3 months later we bought my wife's iPhone.  About a month after that, I ordered 3 extra Lightning cables and a couple of the microUSB adapters.  I have tried to get the lightning cables replaced under their separate warranty, but the APple Store keeps refusing to consider the cable purchse date and only looks at the purchse date of the iPhone itself.  In about 3 weeks, my iPhone will be a year old, but my cables should still have warranty for 4 more months.  I highly doubt that the clerks at the store will honour that since the iPhone itself will be over  a year old...

  • T420 International Warranty Service?

I bought a T420 in the US and I left it at home in Viet Nam (when I visited my parents). According to the International Warranty Service Terms And Conditions (English) my T420 is eligible for IWS in Viet Nam. When my father went to the Lenovo Service Center in Viet Nam, he was asked for the proof of travel (I prepared those for him because I read the terms), but after providing the Lenovo agent these documents (my documents), the agent refused because my father was not the original purchaser. Is this how it is supposed to be? If yes how do I transfer the ownership to my father?

It is clearly stated that a ThinkPad has an international warranty.
Have you actually read the IWS T&Cs?  There are clearly stated caveats for several ASEAN countries.

  • Change HDD with SSD in Notebook HP ENVY 15-k000nl - Warranty expiration - Maximun RAM Upgrade

    Good morning,
I have bought the above notebook one week ago, in the HP main site there wasn't photo about the rear and when I saw there is no easy way for chanhe HDD to SSD, I have to unscrew about 15 screws located here and there
Just I would like know if I change the SSD the warranty will expire?.
At the same time please can I upgrade the RAM to 16 GB DDR3L? which is the Maximun RAM Upgradable?
    Best regards
    Christian

    Hi, Christian:
Yes, if you replace the hard drive or memory, the warranty will be voided as neither component is a DIY (do it yourself) project.
Please see the service manual at the link below, chapter 6 for the authorized service center removal and replacement procedures for those components.

  • Frustrating Warranty Experience X220 Laptop 4 Months old broken LCD Screen

I want to preface this message so that others may understand how horrible an experience it is to claim anything on the manufacture warranty with Lenovo.
Previous to my company using Lenovo we used Dell. Their support was always top notch. They came on site to replace broken or defective parts and all with in 1-2 day period.
The Lenovo warranty experince will start by you being suffeld around to 3-4 different Indian speaking help desk locations, and after explaining your issues 4-5 times they will inform you that you must ship the laptop in for replacement services. This will require you to be with out your laptop for 7-10 business days. That in my book is  unacceptable to any standards. IBM Thinkpads used to be known for how well they supported the business user, now we are told that you have no other options but to ship the laptop and wait more than a week for the matter to be resolved.
This is the last straw from a frustrated IT manager, and we will be taking our business to a vendor that values customer support and stands behind thier products better.

While I can sympahise - when you purchased your lenovo products if you did not purchase the on-site service what exactly do you expect ?
Like anything else, no-one can return a product for service without following procedures and such returns, repairs etc all take time.
So - whats the issue - you are getting exactly what you paid for .......

  • Experiences with Plugin upgrade?

    Hi,
we are planning to do an upgrade of the R/3 plugin from the 2001_2_46C to 2004_1_46C. Does anyone have experience with this? I am especially interested to find out if this is a completely isolated upgrade or if we can expect some side effects in other areas in R/3. We need to decide if we can do the initial test on our development system or if we need a separate sandbox. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Jeroen de Groot

    Hi Jeroen
I'm pretty sure that this is an isolated upgrade (after all we did not make any special cross functionality test on the R/3 side). But it is a tricky upgrade as you will have to make 100% sure that your queues are empty etc before you do the upgrade otherwise you may loose data. You should also change to "Queued Delta" in the LO extractors and you should also do a serious test here. This could also be a reason for having a sandbox so that you are sure that you "train" the upgrade sequence (close down user access to R/3, close down background jobs that may create transactions, empty MCEX queues / V3 control, load data to BW, upgrade plug-in, put on additional transports to change to Queued Delta, and last just to be safe make a initial load with out data transfer to all delta target on the BW side).
    With Kind Regards
    Kristian

  • Bad Experience with Phone Upgrade

I have three lines with Verizon and I've had them for over 2 years.  All of my accounts are eligible for an upgrade.  I wanted to upgrade my wife's phone and I saw an LG Octane available free (after the **bleep**, time-wasting mail-in rebate) online.  I started to upgrade online, but had a few questions about how it would affect the other two lines.  I called Customer Service about the questions.  I asked her if, since I had her on the line, I could go ahead and process the upgrade that I saw on the website while I had her on the phone.  She said yes, and processed the upgrade.  Well, my bill comes and I find a $160 charge for the equipment.  I called the billing department this morning to find out what happened.  They said I needed to order online.  I told them that the rep I spoke to indicated that I would get the same deal when I ordered the phone.  Now, these braintrusts want me to FedEx the phone back to them so they can cancel the upgrade, just so I can go back online and order the same phone for free.  I asked to speak to a supervisor.  I was told I would be called back.  Haven't received a call yet.   I've been with just about every cell carrier in the country and done many upgrades in the past.  Never had a terrible experience like this.  Customer Service (or lack thereof) gets a big fat ZERO on this upgrade.

    Hi leonehouse1,
I’m very sorry if this experience did not match up with what was described to you at the time of purchase.
It is correct that we charge a service fee of $149.99 for smartphones being replaced and if you choose to have the replacement phone sent to you right-away we would place a $250 hold fee authorization charge to your account. Once we receive the defective phone back from you we would release that $250 authorization from your account.
I did look at your service request and show the replacement phone was delivered to you on 12/16/2014. Do you need anything from me?

  • Does the ipad warranty include accessories?

So basically i bought an iPad Air in March (5 months ago) and the plug has just stopped working, the lead still works but is very slow with others plugs, I'm assuming I get some warrenty, if so how long? And would this cover the plug or just the actual ipad? Thanks

The Warranty covers the iPad as well as any included accessories for the same length of time.  That would mean the charger and the cable are covered by the same 1 year warranty as the iPad.

You can take them into an Apple Store for diagnosis, and get a free Warranty replacement if they deem the problem was a manufacturing defect.

Professions from Windows 7 Home Premien
that came as a surprise and a BIG **bleep**????
Why then lenovo sells windows or even do business with Microsoft!!!!!!

I can imagine, that might give Microsoft reason to have a puzzled frown at Lenovo ... thats sort of restricting their sales now that you have brought that up here.

  • My experience of recent upgrade to BT Infinity

First it did not go well. After a few days my broadband connection kept dropping out, often a much as ten times a day. Finally in despartartion I phoned the help desk and as usual I spoke to a nice gentleman 5,000 mile away with an accent I could not understand.  Evenually, it was arranged for an enginner to vist and he changed both the Modem and the Hub. Still the problem continued.  Another phone call to India resulted in another engineer visit.  He belived that the fault was in the infamous "green box", but this was another department of BT and he could only report his findings.  After a few days, I can only presume that the fault in the box was fixed as I now get a good connection.
I only have two comments to make.
    1. Firstly BT need to train their engineers better on fibre optic and stop recruting installers on contract who clearly don't know their job.
    2. Secondly, BT should realise that BT stands for "British Telecom" and not "Indian Telecom" and bring their Help Desks back to the UK.  Odd how their Sales Desks are in the UK!

    Hi RTFishall,
Thanks for posting. Sorry you didn't have a great experience to begin with. I hope it's all running well for you now. Let us know how you're getting on.
    Cheers

  • Terrible Experience With Adobe Upgrade

I purchased a copy of PS Elements 9 from Amazon in early October.  I noticed that version 10 was out and contacted Adobe regarding an upgrade.  After registering my PSE 9 and emailing my Amazon receipt as requested by support, I was told that I was not elgible for an upgrade because my PSE was already registered to another user.  They suggested that I contact Amazon.  This is pure @#$%.   My software came in a sealed box from Amazon with no signs of tampering, etc.  I have started 3 different support cases and called 3 different times with no results.  The last time they escalated my case to Level 2 but I haven't heard from them for the past 3 weeks.
Does anyone have any suggestions for cracking this problem?

It really depends how close the date of purchase was to the first launch of PSE10.

  • Review Problems and Solutions after upgrade question

I have recently migrated from WSS 3.0 to Sharepoint Foundation 2010.  I now have a the following messages in Sharepoint Admin.
The SharePoint Health Analyzer has detected some critical issues that require your attention. View these issues.
Accounts used by application pools or service identities are in the local machine Administrators group.
Using highly-privileged accounts as application pool or as service identities poses a security risk to the farm, and could allow malicious code to execute. The following services are currently running as accounts in the machine Administrators group: SharePoint
    Central Administration v4 (Application Pool)
    SPTimerV4(Windows Service)
Built-in accounts are used as application pool or service identities.
Using built-in accounts like Network Service or Local System as application pool or as service identities is not supported in a farm configuration. The following services are currently running as built-in identities on one or more servers: SPSearch4(Windows
    Service)
The last time I tried to correct this type of issue I wound up creating a problem that I was unable to correct.  I had to  reinstall Sharepoint.  How critical is this and what is the best way to make these changes without causing larger problems?
I am using two accounts to run the services/pools/etc.  Well 3 if you count the Local System.  Account #1 and #2 are not in the Admins group.  They were when I installed everything but I have since removed them.

    Hi Poly,
I recommend to follow the steps below to see if the warning message remains:
    1.   Re-run Rule Definition.
In Central Administration, go: Monitoring > Health Analyzer > Review rule definitions. On the Health Analyzer Rule Definitions page, in the Category: Security group, click the rule definition link, Accounts used by application pools or service identities
are in the local machine Administrators group. Click the Run Now button, then click Close. Wait a minute or two, and then return to Review problems and solutions page.
    2.   Reset Farm Service.
Login to the local machine hosting the farm Central Administration application. Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Services and scroll down to the SharePoint 2010 Administration service. Double-click this service, select the Log On tab. If not selected,
select  the This account option and then enter or re-enter the farm account. At the warning prompt, "The new login name will not take effect until you stop and restart the service," click OK. Stop and restart the service, and then
click OK. Wait a minute or two, and then return to Review problems and solutions page.
    3.   Reset the Farm Timer Service.
Login to the local machine hosting the farm Central Administration application. Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Services and scroll down to the SharePoint 2010 Timer service. Double-click this service and select the Log On tab. If not selected,
select  the This account option and then enter or re-enter the farm account. At the warning prompt, "The new login name will not take effect until you stop and restart the service," click OK. Stop and restart the service, and then
click OK. Wait a minute or two, and then return to Review problems and solutions page.
