My Time Capsule has just failed, 2 months after the end of 12m warranty. same old known power supply issue, "just unlucky" says my local Apple service center. ***?

i bought a 2TB Time Capsule in Sep 2010. its just failed last week, less than 2 months after the expiry of the 12month warranty.
and 3 months after the end of Apple's offer to replace all the many Time Capsules that have failed previously due to this same fault.
nice timing guys.
"yeah, its dead. same old known power supply issue", says my local Apple service center, "just unlucky".
huh? "unlucky"? you sell products with known defects, and when it fails i'm "unlucky". nice.
"OK, anyway, how much to fix it ?", i ask.
"you can't fix them, its closed", is the reply, "you have to buy another one".
"hmpf. OK, how do I get my backed-up data off it ?"
"you can't. we could try break it open and recover the hard disk i guess, but no guarantees we'd get it, and you'd have to pay for us to do that, whether it works or not of course".
"er.... is there a hidden camera in here? are we on TV? you can't be serious ? ..and this piece of garbage is what i've been using for a secure backup of my precious, irreplaceable, priceless personal data  ???"

ceeb28744.  Welcome to the Apple Users Support Community.  Sorry to hear your TC died!  You said it was a 2TB so I would guess it be the model A1355/MB997LL/A or MC344LL/A.  Believe it or not all users of these time capsules will eventually experience this problem like you have.  There is a 99.5% (or better) chance that the only thing that is wrong with it is the internal power supply.  If you will go to this site.... https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair  and once there look over at the left side and you will find:
Apple Time Capsule Repairers    and from that list you will be able to choose from a list of individuals that could repair your TC and have it returned to you fully operational again.  The individuals on the list are hardware technicians and they can save you a lot of money and time.

  • Is the Time Capsule wi-fi router compatible with the Nest thermostat? I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?

I've read where there are issues with the Nest and Airport Extreme (AE)? Is AE used in the Time Capsule?
If so, i already have a wi-fi router, so can the Time Capsule simply be used for wireless backup instead of as a router if there is conflict?

A TC is fundamentally a AE with a sata chip included to drive the hard disk. Some slightly different bios to include disk functions, although most of those are also on the AE. So as a router it is 99.999% identical.
And yes, if you have another router you can easily bridge the TC and use wireless for backups and internet connection. Once you no longer route through the TC the issues with most NAT problems including port forwarding should disappear.. mostly this is due to all apple routers using NAT-PMP instead of upnp which is the near universal standard for opening ports.. without upnp apple keep their routers more exclusive.

  • HT201250 My time capsule has failed a back-up

Having issues with my time capsule not sure what to do about it. The error message says time machine couldn't complete the backup to the time capsule (Mac mini.sparsebundle” is already in use). I don't know what this means or how to fix the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

It means that there are bugs in Mavericks.
    The down and dirty fix:
Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten slowly
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes and try another backup
    Please report on your results
Or, post back if want to try a bit more elegant "fix"

  • Time Capsule 'Back up Failed'

    Hi,
I have had my time capsule for 8 months now with no issues, until recently when I have noticed an exclamation mark in the centre of time machine icon at the top of my desktop.
when attempting to 'back up now' it highlights a message saying 'back up failed,' I have trolled through several posts with similar issues but to no success on how to fix this. It has happend twice now and the only way I have found to correct it is by powering down the TC and leaving it for a while before turning it back on. This has worked on both occasions however I am looking for some advice on a more permanant cure or any suggestions to help? as it is getting annoying.
    Thank you

If it is a bug in the system would it not effect all TC's? Is this something a replacement will cure?
No, it is not uniform or easy even to reproduce the problem.. the people who have it never get rid of it.. no matter what measures they take.. but it is odd.. it can work fine for many months.. just as you have discovered.. but having triggered it.. you can never dispose of it.. like fleas on a dog.. !!
I do a lot of messing around and repairing of Time Capsules with power supply issues.. but I do not have that issue. This is what makes it hard to track down.. plus Apple has removed all the diagnostics from TC and the airport utility. It is just too simple for words. It is designed to work at the most basic level and if that fails.. too bad!!

  • My Time Capsule has quit backing up - now spends all it's time "preparing".  I've tried the Apple suggestion of a reset which does not help.  All indicators seems to be OK.  Running OS 10.5.8 on G4 Powerbook, Time capule is 1st gen I believe.  Any ideas?

    Hello,
Thanks for your message, I have attempted to repait the permissions as tou suggested.  The first time this produced a long list of exceptions and took quite a while, however although it said "Permissions repair Complete" when I ran it again there were still about 20 exceptions, I have repeated the procedure and this is unchanged.  The Time Capsule now does not spend hours "Preparing", but the backup attempt fails after a few minutes with the error message "The backup volume could not be mounted."  Any further ideas would be appreciated.   When I use Disk Utility I can't see the Time Capsule volume, if I could I'd be tempted to re-format it and start from scratch.

  • Time Capsule backup suddenly fails. Why?

    Dear all,
I have used Time Capsule (1 TB) to backup three Macs for months now and everything has worked just fine. Since two days however, Time Machine doesn't backup anymore. It tries to access Time Capsule and then stops with an error message saying that "an error has occurred while creating the backup folder" (German text: "Beim Erstellen des Backup-Verzeichnisses ist ein Fehler aufgetreten"). I have no clue why this happens. Nothing has been changed on the Mac itself. Time Capsule has not yet run out of storage, 415 GBytes out of 929 are still available.
The error only occurs on one of my three Macs. I however have no idea how to resolve the problem since Time Machine doesn't give any more specific details.
I do not want to lose the backed up data....! So far Time Capsule has been pretty reliable but not anymore...
Thanks in advance for any help and kind regards

  • TIme Capsule won't connect wirelessly after restart??  HELP!

I plug in time capsule and it shows up on Airport Utility. I enter the information it asks for joining an existing wireless network. We have Fios through Verizon and are running a Verizon wireless router. After seeing my wireless network it asks for the Wireless Security choice. It automatically chooses WEP 128bit so I assume this is correct. It also automatically puts in my password (not sure why) but I go ahead and retype the password for our wireless network. Then this is what I get after several minutes:
"*Airport Utility was unable to find your apple wireless device after restarting.*
The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."
Then when I run Airport Utility the Time Capsule no longer shows up and the only way to get it back is to push the little pin hole reset button in the back for 5 seconds to completely reset the unit. I have done this no less than 5 times.
Please advise...any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jenn

In case anyone has this same problem and ends up reading my post. I, through the help of a very tech savy friend, was able to solve the problem for the most part.
Here is, from what I can remember, he did.
We plugged the TC into one of the LAN ports on the back of my wireless router. We then set the TC up on it's own as a source for connecting to the internet wirelessly. (He had to go into my settings VIA verizon and pull down some codes to make this work.) Once the TC showed up as it's own wireless network on my computer, we were able to do the back up through Time Machine no problem. We ended up just disabling our old verizon wireless router on the server but are keeping it plugged in.
    Hope that helps.

  • Time Capsule remote access fails - Device not listed

I've been able to access my 4th generation time capsule hard disk remotely, but my router settings keep getting reset and I need help with my configuration.
Apparently, the router (xDSL Motorola 7647-47-20SC) is dropping my IP Passthrough settings for the time capsule even though it initially accepted them and remote access was verified.   Although I've added the time capsule as a new device using its MAC address, after a few minutes the device is no longer listed and my port forwarding and IP Passthrough settings are lost.
    Here's my setup:
xDSL modem configured in DHCP mode.  The DNS server is configured to be retrieved automatically.  The Time Capsule is directly connected to the router via an ethernet cable and has been added as a device using its MAC Address with the router configured to forward both TCP and UDP port 548 to the device.  IP Passthrough has also been enabled for the Time Capsule.
Using AirPort Utility the Time Capsule has been set to bridge mode with Back to My Mac enabled.  I tried to configure it in NAT and DHCP mode to enable disk sharing over WAN, but either lost my internet connection or got an error message that my internal DHCP addresses conflicted with the router's (even though they didn't).
I have a domain host name via dyndns.org which is updated with my public IP address.
The first time I set up the router and time capsule and entered the "Connect to Server" address afp://xxxx.dyndns.org:548 a pop-up window asked for my user name and password, after which I was able to see the hard disk remotely.  But when I tried again this morning there was no connection to the server.  So I checked my router settings again when I got home, and the Time Capsule device was no longer listed!  I can access the disk in Finder within my home LAN, so it must be identified somewhere, but my original IP Passthrough and port forwarding settings are no longer available since the time capsule has been dropped from the list of available devices.
Can anyone tell me how to restore this configuration and make it stick?  Thanks for your help!

Well, I just perused the Swisscom forums and apparently a firmware update initiated remotely a few weeks ago is causing problems with IP Passthrough functionality on the router.  Nothing we can do until a bug fix becomes available from out internet provider.

  • My time Capsule is now 3 months in operation and now every day shutdown automatically and the power is completely off and my network is down. Any idea what is happening?

My time Capsule is now 3 months in operation and now every day shutdown automatically and the power is completely off and my network is down. Any idea what is happening?

The Time Capsule has a defective power supply and it needs to be exchanged as soon as possible. Soon, you will not be able to power it back up at all after it shuts down.
Take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store, if you have one near you, or contact Apple Support to get the process started.

  • My network on the time capsule has a "lock" by it so I know that it requires a password. My guest network has no "lock" by it so I am thinking that it is not locked and people could use it. How  do I lock my guest network on my time capsule or delete it?

My Time Capsule had a guest network that does not have a "lock" sign by it. So I am thinking that other people can use my wireless internet. My other network does have a "lock" by it. How do I delete or lock the guest network? I obvioulsy am not a computer savy individual so please use laymans terms if you can help me. Please and thank you.

In any event, if your OS X version is 10.7.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
If your OS X version is 10.5.x or 10.6.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3:
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
After you install the appropriate version of AirPort Utility, open it. The program will be located in your Utilities folder, which in turn is found in your Applications folder.
To open the Utilities folder, go to the Finder and select "Utilities" from the Go menu:
AirPort Utility 5.6 looks like this:
... but make sure you use the version of AirPort Utility you just downloaded.
Launch AirPort Utility and select your Time Capsule. Click Manual Setup, then the Guest Menu tab, then you can elect to disable the guest network, or to establish whatever security settings you want.
The window looks somewhat like this:
If your version of AirPort Utility does not look anything like that, you are probably not using the one you just downloaded. Find it and start over.
When you are finished configuring your Time Capsule, click Update and allow the Time Capsule to restart.

  • HT3728 Time capsule has lost power, how do i repair this & recover the files?

The time capsule has lost power, isthere away to reset this so it will operate again, where can i get it repaired if not & can i recoverthe files?

So the TC is dead.. ie no lights on. no body home??
When you plug the power in, look closely at the front and ethernet leds.. do any flash.. or all dead?
Apple will not repair them. If you have applecare on a computer it will be replaced.
Files can be recovered by voiding the warranty and removing the hard disk.. place in usb holder and plug into the computer.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Gen3 if yours is A1355 is probably shorted board .. not a power supply gone bad.. although a repairer would need to look at it.
Here is the repair instructions for A1355 I did.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
AFAIK at this point Chris in the UK, and myself in Australia are the only people crazy enough to do it.
If you have an electronics repair type he might help you. It is easy to do.. and so far very successful.. and once fixed have remained good. Happy to give more info if you contact me direct.
If you check the rubber foot and it is earlier model then it is just a dead power supply.
Apple and the apple repair network will throw it away if not under warranty.. if it is under warranty they will still throw it away just they will give you a replacement.

  • I have more ethernet devices than my time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

I have more ethernet devices than my apple time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

Just to add to Bob's comment.. it is much better to move all the connections to the switch..
Don't leave two connections on the TC and then connection to the switch plus the rest.. plug everything into the switch. The only line running to the TC is to connect switch to TC.
The sweet spot for most people is 8 port switches which are now consumer items.. go into any big computer shop.. buy whatever brand you want.. they are not alot different.. but I have noticed smart switches are coming down in price.. to the point cheap end 8 port smart (managed sort of). are the price of dumb switches a year ago.. they also will have better controls and more details. ie discover what is using bandwidth in the network.. some basic QoS .. lots of stuff that Apple routers missed out on.
    eg d-link DGS-1100-08
I just bought one to replace my power hungry managed 16 port switch.. although I haven't unboxed it .. sometimes things don't work 100% on Macs but most have simple browser type access. Not all browsers work is my experience but something always does.

  • Time Capsule stops backing up even after reset

My Time Capsule has stopped backing up saying it can't create the backup folder.
    So far, I have:
    1) reset the Time Capsule
    2) reset the network and even renamed it
    3) deleted the file in the library marking the last backup
I see that there are backups on there, but I can't make any new ones and it seems to have just started in the last week and there was no change to the Time Capsule in that time.

What OS is your computer running?
Your profile is out of date I am guessing. ie you are not running 10.6.2 ??
Apple did give a few details of problems in Mavericks.. there are many more.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Reset the TC to factory again.
Redo the setup with all short names no spaces pure alphanumeric.
    Set IPv6 to link-local only
Manually mount the TC disk in computer.
Then reset TM and try the backup again.
You will see all of those in posts I have done about Mavericks issues with TC and TM.
eg Time Machine Can't Find Backup Disk
If none of those fix it.. tell us exactly the network layout.. not just the TC model and age, main modem model and type. TC setup.
    Also computer OS and setup.
You can setup the TC in full network isolation.. plug it into the computer by ethernet and try again.
    How much space is available?
Have you studied the details of setup and troubleshooting from Pondini??

  • My hard drive an my i.mac recently failed.  Fortunately I had everything back up to my Time capsule.  How do I start back ups again to this same capsule using Time Machine.

My hard drive on my i.mac recently failed.  Fortunately it was backed up to Time Capsule using Time Machine.  I had a new hard drive installed. and reinstalled my data from the Time Capsule  How do I begin backups again using the same Time Capsule?  I want to back up my current hard drive with all current content.  I don't necessarily need what was on the old hard drive and pre-crash Time Capsule as everything there is currently residing on my i.mac's hard drive.  I just want to start my backups again.  Thank you.

How do I begin backups again using the same Time Capsule?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Turn Time Machine "ON"
    Click Select Disk
    Choose your Time Capsule
    Click Use This Disk
The first backup will begin in a few minutes.
If you decide to delete your old backups, do this before you back up the "new" Mac as listed above.
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase
    Choose the Quick Erase option
    Click Erase Disk
The operation will only take a minute or two.....then, you can set up the first backup of the Mac as listed above.
