MyBook Studio WD20EADS green not firing up

Hi everyone, new to the forum, so please forgive me if this subject has been broached b4.  I've had a quick search but can't find the relative info.  My WD Studio 2TB drive suddenly stopped firing up. I'm convinced this is a powerboard problem, but don't know for sure.  I'm hoping my data is still intact.  My question is..is it possible to change the powerboard? If so, would you know where one can buy such a replacement?  I understand the numbers have to be the same (something to do with encryption I believe)..so here's my number...  4060-705066-003 REV.P1....I'm in a gentle spiral which is gradually turning into a fully blown spin towards the ground as I have over 80,000 aircraft photos on the drive as well as a wedding vid I was editing. Any help would be really appreciated, Thanks in advance, Steve

Hello,
Through WD standards procedures replacement parts are not sold by WD, but you can try searching on Ebay. There are also some data recovery companies you can try to contact. Check the link below for more information.

  • Mybook Studio Edition external drive shows in macbook leopard but not imac

I have a Mybook Studio Edition external drive that I am using to store files and as a backup for my macbook leopard using time machine. I wanted to add files from my imac tiger but it does not show up in disk utility and the system profiler says unrecognized drive. I don't remember formatting it - it was just plug and play out of the box. Does this mean it is formatted for Leopard and won't work on tiger?
Is there something that time machine does that it will only be recognized by macbook?
    The imac is:
    2.4 ghz
    3gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.4.11
    the macbook is
    2.4ghz
    4gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.5.6

    Hello,
On the iMac ... Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Two WD MyBook Studios in Daisy Chain, Windows 7 not recognizing second HDD

I have two Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition II external drives in a daisy chain. These are the 2TB versions -- one functions as a Time Machine backup for both my MacBook Pro and iMac, and the other stores most of my media. The first drive in the chain, my Time Machine drive, is recognized and accessible through Windows 7, while the second drive is not.
What's odd, however, is that I've been able to access these drives together on a previous installation of Windows, in a similar hardware configuration.
What gives? Any suggestions? Has anyone run into this issue before?
I'm running Windows 7 on a 27" iMac (i5) with all available updates installed.

    Hi,
I found your post whilst researching my options for connecting 2 x My Book Studio II (both are the 4TB version) to my MacMini 2010 running Snow Leopard.
Do you only run Windows 7 on your Mac, or have you had success running Mac Snow Leopard too with your daisy-chain configuration?
The reason behind my question, is that I had some problems in the early days (18 months ago) with daisy-chaining, there was some corruption of data and the lights on the front of one drive indicated an (undocumented) error mode that WD support could not advise what it meant, their only advice was to reformat the drive again, and again (it was tedious.)
I had a unit replaced in the end, however I never had the nerve to go back to a daisy-chain configuration after my initial problems.
WD support advised me to connect one drive with FW800, and the other with USB - something to do with unique ID's.
I now need an additional USB port free, so I am considering daisy chaining the FW800 drives.
I could just try it of course, however the second drive is used to backup the first drive (and is then disconnected) - and I don't want to risk corrupting both drives now that I have 3TB of data.
    Thanks.

  • Western Digital MyBook 512G + MyBook Studio 1T - Freezing 10.6.2 MacMini

    Hi,
I´m having trouble when connecting two MyBook to a MacMini. It looks like that after a sleep, one drive is not waking up and in turn is freezing the MacMini to a halt with cursor spinning and that's pretty much all it does.
The older one MyBook Essential is connected over USB port (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=101&lang=en).
The newer one MyBook Studio is connected over FireWire. (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=121&lang=en).
The newer drive MyBook Studio (recently purchased from Aple Store) is not resuming from sleep when comuter is wakened up. The light keeps flashing like when in sleep mode.
The blocking can only be resolved by pulling the power cable from the newer MyBook drive, which is believed to be a suboptimal solution to the problem.
The problem so far can only be reproduced when both drives are connected. Running each of them as single drives connected seems to be of no problem.
Since the drives do work correctly each on their own on a individual basis, is there a known Mac problem eventually when dealing with reactivation from sleep mode and multiple drives connected on different bus types?
    Thanks in advance and
    Greetings
    Falk

There may be a number of issues here -
1 - did you password the drive with the SmartWare app? there is a known wake-from-sleep problem with this. The fix is to run the SmartWare app and unlock the drive (unfortunately you may have to do this every time)
2 - did you set the drive sleep timer in SmartWare? If so, turn it off
3 - this is a green drive, and they have not always been reliable waking from sleep. Sometimes they seem to have a mind of their own.
4 - in System Prefs > Energy Saver, UNcheck the option called "Put hard disks to sleep when possible

Check whether you have maintained the email address in the customer master of Sold to party in the General Data>Address Tab> Under Communication Area??
In the SCOT Transaction, check under SMTP (SMTP Mail Server)-->under INT (Internet) --> an  '*' asterisk has been maintained or not.
Check the status of the email output in the Sales Order, is it showing with a green traffic light???
If it is showing with a green traffic light you can manually see the status of the mail mesages in Transaction SOST.(by executing, by putting the Sender Id)
If they have not gone you will be able to see them queued up there.
Select the individual messages and press execute button. By doing this email outputs will be released.
    Hope this helps you.
Caution: One word of caution is that SCOT is a very critical transaction. And if you are working on a live server, do not play with it as it controls the entire SAPconnect Administration Nodes.
    Hope this helps.

  • OnRowUpdating Event not firing in my DataGrid in custom web part in my production SharePoint 2013 Foundation instance

    Hi,
I have a custom visual web part that I've developed for SharePoint 2013 Foundation.  I am using Visual Studio 2013 to develop this web part.
In my visual web part I have GridView that I use to update data in a SQL 2008 R@ Server Database.  In dev and test the OnRowUpdatingEvent fires properly, but in production it does not.  I have the same version of SharePoint running on dev/test/prod.
The main difference between the three environments is the hardware.  Production has a much beefier sever than dev and test.  Dev and test are also virtual machines where production is.
At first I thought my problem was cache related, and I made adjustments per this article:
    http://www.dmcinfo.com/latest-thinking/blog/id/8657/fix-sharepoint-2013-distributed-cache-timeouts
That didn't help because the event is still not firing.  I took my test application and pointed it to the production database, and that event still fires in test but not in production. So I believe that eliminates database permission errors since I'm
using the same credentials in both instances.
My guess is that I need to change some settings in the production environment, but I'm not sure at this point what that might be.
Any suggestions on what settings to look at?

If the issue still exists,  I suggest you debug your code and check whether the event method is executed.
In SharePoint 2010, we can also use visual web part to achieve it.

  • WD Drive Manager Services component error message MyBook Studio Edition II 2TB on iMac

For five months I have been using a WD MyBook Studio Edition II 2TB in RAID 1 mode on a 27" iMac i7, 2.93 GHz, running Mac OS X 10.6.7, as a Time Machine connected via FW800.  Initial installation and operation was all good.
Recently, the blue WD logo disappeared from the menu bar. I reinstalled the WD Drive Manager version 2.25 from the installation disk. The logo reappeared, however when selecting Launch WD RAID Manager from the menu an error message appears:
"The WD Drive Manager Services component could not be found. Make sure the Drive Services component is running first."
I removed the WD Drive Manager with the installation disk and reinstalled and tried again. No good.
Tried again, this time using the USB connection with the same result. No joy.
Tried using the downloadable version (2.25) from the WD website with same results.
Searching Google lead to no hits on anything remotely related for a solution.
So, at this point, I cannot confirm that the drive is actually in RAID 1 mode. It shows up in the Finder as a 1TB drive with 268 GB used.
How can I restore a working version of the WD Drive Manager?
WD Tech Support has escalated the issue to programmer level but without a successful solution. They suggested I post here as well to see if any other Mac users may have had this problem and have found a solution.
Thanks for any assistance or referral.

Unfortunately you probably will not find very many if anyone using WD Drive Manager here, most of us are using a variety of backup strategies that include Time Machine, an on-line backup and a Bootable Clone made with CarbonCloner or SuperDuper.

  • MyBook Studio Edition and Mac pro

So i got my Mac Pro today and have my MyBook Studio Edition 500GB hard drive with about 90GB of stuff I need to transfer over. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the MyBook, but when I attach it to the Mac Pro, it won't mount. The ports recognize that there's something there, but not the drive. Am I out of luck? I had only intended on keeping this drive long enough to dump my files, but now I can't even do that. I tried it in the firewire, firewire 800 and USB ports. Someone mentioned updating the firmware, but how can I do that if the drive isn't being recognized?
I also can't seem to force power down the MyBook. If I hold the power button in, it just stays on.
    Any suggestions?

You can of course read what the button does from Apple.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/MacPro_0608/Articles/M43_0906arch.html
Others have said that the button manager doesn't work with Leopard.
And if you just got the Mac Pro, you should have 10.5.1 and the original system (hopefully cloned before doing anything) and only done fresh install where needed with latest Leopard compatible programs.
WD firmware: read and see if this applies -
    http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=21&swid=65
A Mac Pro needs to have the boot drive as GUID. If you are using or have the original boot drive it would have to be GUID. If you happened to merge your system from the G5 onto the Mac Pro's system, you could have problems.
Some G5s are happy with GUID, but native format is of course APL.

  • Firewire800 drive freezing (WD MyBook Studio)

I'm having troubles to get my WD MyBook Studio working with TM through Firewire 800. The Backup always freezes and shows no reaction anymore. If I connect the same drive through USB 2.0 it seems to work flawlessly.
I already downloaded a new driver for that HDD and a so called "button manager" which should have solved issues when operating under 10.5 but still the problem remains.
I have been looking for FW800 drive for so long and now I can't get it working correctly. Anyone got any idea?

I applied the most recent updates to my 750GB WD studio (FW800), and my lockups stopped (at least for over a month). The lockup on boot is due to the drive hanging the system... unplug it both from the USB or Firewire connection, and the power. The system should start up normally. Plug in the drives and all should be good.
Just a note, make sure if you get a hangup to unplug both the power and the Firewire cable, as Firewire carries power and won't allow the drive to really reset.
All of that being said, my drive locked today after over a month of running well. I also have a 500GB Mybook Home Edition. Both the 500GB Home Edition and 750GB Studion drive are connected to my Mac Mini via "daisy-chaining" with Firewire.
    [Mini]<--[500GB Home Ed.]<--[750GB Studio]
When the lockup occurred, the Studio drives light was off. After unplugging both from Firewire and power for a few seconds, OS X was no longer frozen. I rebooted, and then plugged in both drives and all has been good since. We'll see how long it stays up for.

  • New WD mybook studio woes

I got on Monday a new 1TB Mybook Studio. I connected it thru firewire 800 and partitioned (Guid) into two. Since then things have gone bad. Have downloaded and installed the new firmware and button drive. No help.
The worst is Time Machine. If I ever open up time machine and instruct it to use the small partition for back up my mac freezes, I get the spinning ball, I can't force quit.. In fact all sorts of strange things are happening when this is connected ie applications won't open, say they are open (glowingblue dot under app in dock) but won't open when I click on them. I tried to erase the disk with disk utility but it froze and DU was not responding.
I've contacted by email the company I bought it from (Lambda Tek in UK) and said I want a refund. Reading their small print they say they will not refund if the box has been opened, duh! Has anyone had experience of refunds with them? I don't think it should be marketed as mac compatible when it's obviously not Leopard compatible.
Have spent two days of my life fiddling with this thing, just wondering if it's worth giving it another shot.... my final qestion is, TM was running on another ext disk, until it got full. Then got the 'unable to backup' message. When I go to TM prefs there in red letters are the words 'last back up failed'. I've read somewhere that TM can have problems after a failed backup so I want to remove from it's memory any knowledge of any previous backup and start again, how do I do that? It might help....
    THANKS!

We cannot help you with a third-party product. The Discussions only provide support for Apple products. You will have to work out your problem with the vendor of your WD drive.
As for your other drive the easiest way to start fresh is to erase the drive with Disk Utility. You can then re-designate it as the TM backup drive if you so desire.
Some searching of the forums should provide some discussions on the WD MyBooks.

  • WD MyBook Studio Suddenly Slow. Sign of Failure?

    Hey Guys.
I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio 3TB external hard drive that has suddenly slowed down dramatically.
I usually hook it up with FireWire 800, but both FireWire and USB is slow. I've hooked it up to another Macbook and it's still slow so i know it's a drive problem.
The speed is so slow it takes about 30 seconds for drive to load thumbnails, and videos do not even load.
I have read through many many forums but still unable to find a fix. I have a lot of important Data on this drive that i cannot lose. It's basically everything digital i have/own.
    Details that may help
    -2010 27" iMac i7.
-I have owned this external drive for about 6 months, and it has been working perfectly.
-There was a power outage a couple of days ago, it worked fine immediately after but the problems started yesterday.
-Currently, the drive is about 1tb used and 2tb free.
-I've tried PRAM reset, different cables, removing the drive from index, pretty much everything i found on forums but no luck.
-drive not making any odd noises or clicks.
Please help as i cannot afford to lose the data on this drive.

The drive could be failing, I would get something besides another WD MyBook and back it up ASAP.

  • Why does my MyBook Studio 1 have two firewire 800 ports?

Hi, I have a WD MyBook Studio edition (version 1) that I use as a backup for my iMac (Early 2008). I'm planning to upgrade my iMac's internal drive to 1 or 2 TBs and I want to know if I can add another MyBook onto the one I currently have via its second firewire port. I'm not sure if that's why there are 2 ports, but that's why you guys are here, right? Thanks in advance and if you know any good internal drives send a link my way ;)!

Hi funman895: Yes indeed the Firewire drives can be daisy-chained. So you can add another MyBook to the second FW port on your drive.
    Hope this helps

  • Western Digital Mybook studio II failed how to reset

Hi All.  My IMAC (10.9.2) developed a problem using time machine at the begining of april.  After using mybook and time machine successfuly for 5 years and having upgraded through the new releases upto mavericks backups have been fine.  However in April backups failed and I could not get time machine to use the backup that existed on the drive even though i could see all the files.  Thus I decided to reformat/erase the Mybook.  I was running the Mybook as 1 1TB drive (2x 1TB in Raid 1 mirrored|)  I wanted to change to striped 2x1TB to make a 2TB backup drive Raid 0.  So I downloaded the WD drive manager Software latest v3 (have not been using the WD woftware for over 18months),  and set the drives into Raid 0,  made a new partition and the drive showed as a 2TB drive. I ran time machine setup the drive and started a backup,  the backup progressed (over 5 hours) to 711GB and 2.1M files but failed at the final hurdle stopping the backup with no error message but IMAC unmounted the drive.  I checked WD drive manager and it reported the drives failed "contact support" .  I rebooted IMAC and reset the drive and the drive again showed but has been unreadable , unmountable (although mounted) and I cannot copy files to it or see my backup ,  but disk utility does show it has the files and the 1.29TB available.  I read the plethora of info regarding the WD drive manager software issues (and advice on this forum stating "do not use" WD or 3rd party software) so I uninstalled the WD software and rebooted IMAC and reset drive again,  drive is again listed in finder and disk utility but I cannot do anything with it,  cannot verify or repair ,  cannot erase the partition cannot unmount (disk util shows "live file system repair is not supported" ,  but I have turned off file sharing and nothing is using the drive).  Is this a corrupt drive or drive firmware,  any ideas how to fix as now running withought a backup until WD drive it fixed.  Is there a way of resetting the drive to factory setup ?

I hate to post this because all the Tech guys pooh pooh me.  But I am going to say again what my experience has shown me.  I had all the same kind of problems with my MyBook Studio.  It went belly up as soon as Mavericks took over my IMac.  I had no luck whatsoever talking with techs at WD or here on Apple Support.  Everyone had their own thoughts, their own fixes and their own beliefs.  Most of the fixes were way over my head...the terms alone were lost on me.  So, I just kept complaining to Western Dig.  After several contacts they told me to follow their warrantee return procedure....which I did.  Within a week, I had a brand new MyBook.  But, this one didn't work either.  I tried and they tried as much as they could to get it working.  No luck.  I kept on bothering them with emails and calls.  Shortly, they informed me that the new one was faulty and I should again follow the warrantee procedures.  I did that and another new machine arrived in a week.  I installed it and immediately could see that this one was a go.  It has worked perfectly and without flaw since February.  That is my solution suggestion to your WD problem.  I am convinced that all of their machines, at least up until March, were not the same or were all faulty.  Do what you please but I would suggest that you go after WD until they send you a new machine.
    OK techs, have at me.....again.

  • How good are the WD MyBook Studio Ed. Refurbished Replacements?

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for Mac - External Hard Drive that is 2 years old, and has started to have problems.
It keeps running constantly and gets very warm. I unplug the cables from it, let it cool for a few minutes, replug the cables, and do a forced backup.... but the next scheduled backup, it starts up and will keep running for hours without doing the backup.
So I unplug it again, let it rest, replug, then do a forced backup, and everything repeats itself as previously mentioned.
I called WD Support this morning, and she said that I could send it in, and they would send me a refurbished replacement. I have read on other forums (tools, etc.) that people send items in for a replacement, and they get back a refurbished unit that is all banged up, and doesn't work properly.
My question is... how good is the WD refurbished replacements that they send back. Are they in good condition? Does anyone have any experience with WD on this?
I have even thought of just getting a new external HD from another company, (G-Drive, LaCie, etc), but I have seen mixed reviews on them. I like the G-Drive Solid State (no moving parts) but that is over $500.... too rich for my blood.
    Any recommendations on either question.
    Thanks,
    Jim

From what I've read on the internet WD offer poor customer service and their products are of low quality. Certainly I have experienced first-hand many WD hard drives failing, mostly with the dreaded click click click. I've only known two or three Seagates go this way in all the years I've been using hard drives (pretty much since the early days of 120MB).
It may be expensive, but I highly recommend the ReadyNAS Duo as a backup solution and / or as general network storage. I have one set up with two 1TB Seagate NS drives in mirrored mode and it works very well. Seagate NS drives are enterprise-standard, designed for use in RAID hardware where they will be in close proximity to one another, Seagate AS drives are not designed for this purpose and so may fail in this situation. Other hard drive manufacturers make enterprise-grade drives too, I'm guessing that the ones WD use in their MyBook products are not these drives though which might explain why there are so many failures. The enterprise-grade drives typically cost about £20 more but I think for reliable backup purposes it's well worth the extra expense.
