Name clash in profile manager after NetRestore

Hi there,
New to the Apple world (Hi ) and struggling with profile manager.
I have used NetRestore to get an image onto 2 iMacs and I'm just going through the process of adding them to our network.
Post build I'm trying to enroll both iMacs but they are somehow clashing or linked. If I enroll MU112MAC, MU111MAC suddenly shows as enrolled (from the http://macserver/mydevices page). I've checked to make sure they have the correct computer name/host name but for some reason as soon as I enroll 1 they both show as enrolled (though only 1 device shows in profile manager devices).
Coming from a Windows background I thought this might be due to lack of a sysprep (or equivalent) beign run pre-capture but from some searching there doesn't seem to be a sysprep as such but rather guides on cleaning up cache and creating default user profile. I have a feeling the device was enrolled pre-capture so wondering if that's where the problem has arisen?
Any pointers/suggestions gratefully received.

• Change the display name of the Profile Manager Portal?

Hello.
Does anyone know if it's possible to change the name that's displayed on the Profile Manager User Portal? It's using my server name and I'd rather it be something a little more generic? Is this possible?
Thanks,
Kristin.

• After updating firefox my profile manager wont make a second connection

''dupe - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/899189''
fire fox auto updated to version 8 and since then my firefox profile manager will only allow a single connection

Sorry, I don't understand what you are trying to do.
If Firefox is already running the Profile Manager dialog won't open, or if you are trying to open the Profile Manager after you have closed Firefox, the previous process might not be closed completely.

• Access Mac Mini Server (profile management) through reverse proxy

Hi,
Newbie in Mac's world and yet trying to make it more complicated as it is.
As we recently (last month) decided to equip our sales force with iPads, they were configured through Apple Configurator tool running on a dedicated Mac Mini Mountain Lion.
Now, I'd be keen in moving this configuration to the Profile Manager, part of the OSx Server plugin. So far so good.
Problem is the following : another web server is already on the LAN using both 80 and 443 ports. So all incoming traffic on those ports was routed to this other server. As Mac Mini Server default http/s ports may not be altered, I installed a reverse proxy server (Oracle VM - Ubuntu 12.04LTS - pound), configured to deal differently traffic on those ports according to the domain name (host) of the web request (header). Each 'local' server has been allocated a domain name. Just to be clear, traffic is now routed by the WAN/LAN router, for those ports, towards the reverse proxy, configured to reroute the traffic to the correct destination.
So far so good, it works like a charm, except... as soon as we enter https protocol on Mac Mini Server Profile Manager.
Access from an iDevice to the Mac Mini Server Profile Manager login page is fine, but as soon as password is confirmed, safari is pending and finally a message 'An internal serer error occured. Please try later again' appears.
Looking to both reverse proxy system log and Mac Mini profilemanager.log files to trace the problem, the following lines are produced at this particular moment :

I guess the '302 Found' is causing or explaining the problem.
I agree this might not be a Mac issue, so I still knock your doors hoping some of you could at least give a hint for what to search for !
If the pound configuration file is of interest, just ask, but this is pretty trivial, saying basically listen these protocols (http/https) on these ports (80/443) and according to Header content (check destination host) and reroute packet to LAN device (with given LAN IP address).
As the default port(s) of the Mac Mini Web Services may not be altered (so far I know), I guess I am stuck using 80 and 443 anyway.
Maybe should I invest time in changing my other apache server ports to some more exotic 8080 or 88 or whatever so Mac Mini Server Profile Manager default ports 80 and 443 are maintained and can be easily and directly rerouted to my Mac server without any reverse proxy along the way.
Thanks in advance for your help
Alx

HI All,
i'm also using reverse proxy technique to publish my server to the internet. The ip is used by twice domains. The problem is by using the profile manager
after login it redirects the url to the Local Area network addresse instead to the domain.
How to configure this on OS X Server and the Profile Manager Service?
Kind Regards
Oemer

• Can't enroll new clients in Profile Manager 3.0.3

I just upgraded a server from 10.8.5 to 10.9.2 and updated the Server app to v3.0.3. Almost everything seems to have gone smoothly, except that I can no longer enroll clients in Profile Manager, and the user under which all devices were originally enrolled disappeared.
I manually re-added the user through the Server app, and used the same short name and password for the account.
All of the old clients (OS X systems running 10.8.5) are still there. I can search within the device list, create profiles, edit profiles, and remove profiles. But none of them show up when I log into the My Devices web page with the re-created user.
This user does not have admin privileges, but even when I try to enroll a device using an admin account I still get a "500 Internal Server Error".
I can't seem to find any other threads covering this exact problem, although there seem to have been others with various PostgreSQL database migration issues during the upgrade. For examples, see this thread: Managed Settings missing in Profile Manager after upgrade to Server 3
Looking for some ideas...

Well, that is one idea that I've already had, Linc, but I'm reluctant to use the "nuclear option" for obvious reasons. I'm actually wondering now if the Secure Cert / OD problem is affecting Profile Manager. See this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23686348#23686348

• Tasks to iOS devices stuck sending in Profile Manager

I am managing about 30 iPads and 10 iPhones through Profile Manager.
I installed iOS 7 on a freshly wiped iPad and enrolled it with the server and everything works as expected (including locking, updating info, pushing settings, etc)
I then updated an already enrolled iPad from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7. Everything appears to still be intact (all settings, apps, profiles, etc) but it will not longer accept commands (lock, clear passcode, push settings, etc) from the Profile Manager. When I try to send a task it just shows sending and never fails or completes. The iPad has internet access (it is on the same wifi network as the above mentioned iPad that is working fine)
Other already enrolled devices that have not yet updated to iOS 7 seem to complete tasks (Update info) just fine.
I was running 10.8.4 with OS X Server 2.2.1 when this began, and have since updated to 10.8.5 and Server 2.2.2 with no change in behavior.
How can I troubleshoot why this iPad is not completing commands. I'm worried that as my users update to iOS 7 other iPads will not recieve commands and I will need to have them re-enroll with the server in order to manage them. (Which I would like to avoid if possible)

I've already asked people to hold off on updating, but without any way to prevent them from updating, I just have to hope...
I installed the iPCU and have looked at the console but I'm not seeing anything relevant. It's like the the command isn't being recieved by the iPad at all (even though Profile Manager shows it as sending, the iPad has internet access, and another iPad on the same network has no problem recieving commands)
Looking at the logs on an iPad that is receiving commands (the iPad with a fresh iOS 7 install, enrolled with Profile Manager after iOS 7 was installed) I see entries related to MDM:
Sep 19 07:18:05 iPad-iOS7 mdmd[99] <Notice>: (Note ) MDM: mdmd starting...

• Profile manager placeholder error

Hello,
Today we tried to register a new iPad Air onto our profile manager.
During the enrolment only a placeholder was made, and the iPad info was not transferred to the profile manager.
We then tried to remove the placeholder from profile manager, but every time we do this we get an error message " A Server Error has Occurred, please reload the webpage and try again".. Well we have tried and tried again but still this placeholder will not be deleted. Enrolling other devices still works, every other device in the profile manager still works.
Can anyone point out how to solve this?

Hello,
We encountered the same error in our Profile Manager after having created an Enrollment Profile and then enrolling an Apple TV device (using the downloaded Profile in Apple Configurator). The Device registered as a placeholder called "New Device" and also strangely as "null" under "Enrollment Profiles / usage" in Profile Manager. Got the " A Server Error has Occurred, please reload the webpage and try again".. when trying to delete the placeholder. Finally we removed/deleted the Enrollment Profile from Profile Manager and then we could remove the placeholder without getting an error!
Maybe this could work for you?
/Henrik

• Profile Manager problems: enroll fails, organization name NULL

At the moment I have 4 VM's running OS X Lion Server. All four are running different services.
I have one OD Master, and 3 OD replica's. On one of the three replica's I am trying to setup Profile Manager.
Two problems came up:
1. Organization is set to NULL instead of my Domain.
Jan 24 17:13:45 laelaps scep_helper[2165]: SCEP_HELPER: /SourceCache/RemoteDeviceManagement/RemoteDeviceManagement-702.13/scep_helper/m ain.m:1084 'org' is NULL
My Trust Profile is listed as Trust Profile for. No additional name is attached.
2. Devices fail to enroll even after installing the trust profile. If I install the trust profile they state that the SCEP Server is invalid.
Any advice on those two problems?

The solution turned out to be simple, but much work.
I destroyed the OD. Reinitialized the server that was - according to my planning - be serving Profile Manager as an Open Directory Master, configured the other servers as replica's, yet the 'org' NULL did not go away.
The enrollment was succesfull thanks to Jonathan Melville's solution.
After that I completely reinstalled the four servers. Made the server that was supposed to be serving ProfileManager the directory master. The three other servers were configured as replica's. Set up Profile Manager and it worked out as it was supposed to.
The morale of this story: Server Admin does not set the organisation correctly. If you create the Open Directory using Server.app it will set this correctly. So make sure you use Server.app for the Open Directory creation. Replica's can - and have to - be done by the Server Admin.
Thanks for the help Jonathan Melville, your shot at masters and replica's was correct.

• Why is the Profile Manager web portal inaccessible after update to 3.2.1 ?

We run the Profile Manager in OS X as an MDM. We also use the Device Enrollment Program.
After updating to 3.2.1, the web portal for Profile Manager became inaccessible, and DEP checkbox in Profile Manager became unchecked.
I've attempted to re-enroll in the DEP, but it always rejects the Token I give.
I don't know if the two problems are related or not.
Does anyone have a solution?
This is the log from the Profile Manager Service Log when I attempt to log in to the Profile Manager portal.

• Profile Manager no longer works properly after update to FF 29.

I am a developer and I previously used the profile manager to manage 3 instances of Firefox. I had one open for Development, 1 for testing and 1 for production. Each was color coded by a theme for easy discernment of which instance I was in.
After the update to 29, the profile manager no longer seems to work properly. The theme from one profile proliferates to all the profiles and it is now very difficult to tell what instance I am in.

I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and
add-ons were changed / reset. Try this;
'''''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]'''''
While you are in safe mode;
'''''Firefox Options > Advanced > General'''''.
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Then check ALL of your settings. Browser and add-ons. Then restart.

• Set or Change Device Name in Profile Manager

Hello,
Is it possible to set or change the device name of an enrolled device using profile manager?
I notice WGMs old 'Set computer name to computer record name' is still there under Login Window options, but I couldn't find away to actually change the record name.
Am I missing something obvious?

The only way I have found to change the device name in Profile Manager is to change it on the device itself, then wait for the updated info to reach PM.
The option to "set the computer name to computer record name" will set the computer name to the name of a computer record that matches in Open Directory (based on MAC). This option would allow you to change the device name in Profile Manager in a round about way... change the computer record name in OD, wait for the change to make it's way to the computer, then back up to the Profile Manager. In my experience, this doesn't take too long.

• Profile Manager Broken after Migration to OS X Server 10.8

After migrating from Lion Server to OS X Server 10.8, Profile Manager will not start. Server.app -> Profile Manager reports "Error Reading Settings". Apache Error log reports:
[Thu Aug 30 13:32:29 2012] [error] (61)Connection refused: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1:3329 (127.0.0.1) failed

I tried shutting down all web services (Profile Manager, Wiki, Web), ran "serveradmin command web:command=restoreFactorySettings", then turned back on Web and Profile Manger... same problem.
Any ideas what, exactly, is wrong and how to fix it?

this might not be true in your case but when I've seen "error reading setting"it has been a permission problem on the Library/Server/profilemanager folder (or other service)
Profile manager should have owner _devicemgr RW, group _devicemgr R, everyone R
same for the Data folder inside.

• Profile manager enrolled device names

I have been playing around with profile manger on 10.7.3 enrolling and iPhone and a couple of iPads.
The iPhone enrolls correctly and the name in the devices tab shows the device name "xxx's iphone" and I can see the information about the device including encryption, apps installed etc.
Both iPads appear to enroll correctly however instead of showing "xxx's iPad" they show the device name of "New Device". I even tried pre-enrolling the device using the serial number and UUID and gave the device a meaningful name, however when then enrolling the device it accepts the enrollment and promptly chnages the name from the meaningful name back to "New Device".
I have tried this on both and iPad 2 and iPAd 3 running the latest IOS.
I also notice that the jobs that communicate with the device to collect the device informantion never complete, where they do for the iPhone.
I am sure this was working before the IOS 5.1 update.

I would try demoting your Open Directory server from Master to Standalone in the Server Admin app - there's an assistant in Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > General > click the change button.
Once it's demoted to a standalone, restart.
From there, don't create an OD Master again - go to Profile Manager in Server.app and run through the wizard again. In the process, it will create an OD Master for you.
Hope that helps,
Chris
