Neo4 Platinum nf4 ultra boot/usb problem compendium

I'm not sure if this problem has been resolved, I've searched this forum and others front to back and I never found a fix.  If it has been resolved, I'm sorry for bringing it up again, but if someone would be kind enough to link me to the correct thread or explain how to fix it here?...
As you all know, the neo4 platinum board will not boot past POST (hangs at CPU info display) if any USB devices are plugged in.  Now, to work around this, I have all my devices plugged into a usb hub, and switch the hub off when booting and switch it back on when in windows xp.  While this works, I like to have all my equipment running the way they should be.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Things I've tried:
- Tried reverting back to BIOS 1.0 (didnt work)
- Tried upgrading to BIOS 1.65 beta (didnt work)
- Tried uninstalling service pack 2 (didn't work)
- tried disabling usb/kb storage support in bios (didn't work)
- tried unplugging front usb port headers (didn't work)
I haven't tried resetting CMOS but correct me if im wrong, doesnt a BIOS upgrade automatically do this?
If no one has a working solution this problem, let's use this thread to share with each other our efforts and our results (if any)..
Thanks.

anyone?...

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 GB SDRAM DDR 400 Problem

I have the K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra and 4 1GB sticks of Corsair ValueSelect DDR 400 (PC 3200), model VS1GB400C3, filling all four slots. The BIOS recognizes about 2.88 GB of total memory. The MSI manual states:
    Quote
Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density
will only be detected up to 3+GB (not full 4GB) when each
DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module.
I'm not sure what this means. Does it mean that I'm "wasting" my SDRAM, that not all of it is used, or does it mean that all of it will be used and the BIOS just reports a smaller number?

    Hi.
You seems not familiar with X86....
As you should know, Windows XP and most OS are 32 bits. That mean that every memory pointer is 32 bits, thus allowing to address 4Gb of memory.
    BUT
In most OS, there is a difference between the kernel and the user. So, in most OS, the memory is divided in two 2Gb block (no matter how many Gb of Ram you really have!). The first one is for the OS, the 2nd for the user program.
So, If you have for example 3Gb of ram, in the best case, you have 1gb for system and 2Gb for user program.
To allow more Ram to fonction, PAE (Physical Address Extension) was made. Instead of 32, you got 36 bits for you pointers.
But as X86-32 CPUs can't handle more than 32 bits, a reserved area was made within 4Gb to allow Memory to be copied from the area the program want to read.
    Exemple:
You got a server with 8Gb of ram. In windows, you only see 3.5+512Mb PAE.
If a program need to address memory in the 7-7.5 Range for example, the chipset copy the data from the 7-7.5 range to the 3.5-4 range in order to allow the CPU to get access: that's VERY slow.
So, in short: You can't have and don't need 4Gb of ram on 32bits OS.
(And there's even more place occupied by every card (AGP, PCI, PCI-e)....)
That's why XP64 is so interresting for programmers who needs lots of ram (Database....). When used with a chipset who know how to deal with lots of ram (I don't know if NForce4 can do it but I doubt it), you can load in memory a 4Gb Database.
But In all case, the bios should say 3.5Gb, not 2 and so on. You must have a problem with one of your stick. My guess is that they are all double sided and that you should slow down the memory to 333MHz.
(Or better: Send back 2x1Gb stick and get 2x512 SINGLE SIDED stick, unless you REALLY NEED 1.5Gb for your system !)

Hi I have an audigy2 from my old pc and installed it on my new system the motherboard is a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra after I installed it I began getting 'Machine_check_exception' blue screen of death, I used the creative auto update to update to the latest drivers, now the pc makes a hissing sound and reboots it's self.
    Any help would be apprecieated.

    hi
i am getting th same thing with my gigabyte nforce 4 board

could this be an nforce 4 related issue?
i found through a process of elimination that the conflict apears to be with windows audio service
i turn it off and all the problems just go away but i still get no sound (not much help there i am afraid)

  • Please Help K8N Neo4 Platinum won't boot?

    Hello,
I could use your expertise in this matter. I have built several systems and never seen this before. My system will not boot with the hard drive
and/or DVD drive attached. It will boot with just the 1.44 floppy attached. My system is as follows:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ATX AMD Motherboard

            Cas Latency 2.5
            Voltage 2.5V
            Unbuffered
Windows XP professtional Service Pack 2
I tried resetting CMOS, changing the cmos battery, re-setting the video card, moving memory modules (from positions 1&2 to 3&4). The power supply is working. When I put my hard drive into another system it boots perfectly. Please help!
    Thanks
    Tony

All that info and I still don't know where you are plugging them in.     SATA or IDE(PATA)? Both?
Can you describe the not booting a little more?  i.e.  No video at all, you see POST but it doesn't complete, POST completes but you can't boot an OS.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller" problem

When I finished building my system a couple days ago I started it up and found some problems:
First of all I got a long beep and one or two (not really clear) short beeps (this can be a video issue but also a mainboard issue (?)), the computer continues to start up and ends without any screen on my monitor (it switches to standby mode) and the famous(?) "Initializing Floppy Drive Controller" LED combination.
This is what I tried so far:
-1- clean startup (cpu, 1 stick of memory, videocard) reinstalled all components
    -2- boot without floppy drive
    -3- clear CMOS
-4- tried different memory and different slots
-5- disabled all case usb and firewire options
I am using a PS/2 Keyboard but it seems to work because when I hit the numlock key the green LED comes on.
What should be my next step?
    System specs:

    I thought this was enough:

Or is this not the correct way to calculate?

  • My Neo4 Platinum doesn't boot

After 1 month, my newly mounted computer doen't boot.  I can only see the welcome picture of MSI and, if I press TAB quickly, I can see some BIOS messages instead that picture.  The last BIOS message I see is  "Pcie VGA Link width: x16".
Please, some ideas to investigate.  I think it happened juts when I tried to connect an IDE drive, when XP is located in a SATA drive.

Quote from: blazing storm on 01-September-05, 03:02:14
USB devices cause the Neo 4 to hang. Disconnect any and try again. If that works go into BIOS and disable "boot to other devices" or something like that, which stops it booting from a USB device.
The Neo4 board is meant to be designed to boot from USB, if I can't do this its not a lot of use, I specifically asked MSI if this board could boot an external hard drive and the answer was yes., but it does not work for me so as far as I can see MSI are infringing trade description acts.

  • MSI-645 Ultra C USB problem

I have an MS-6457(v2.X) ATX mainboard with a D bracket but the two USB ports on the bracket do not work I have tried plugging in my usb mouse but nothing happens. I have plugged the lead in to both jusb1 and jusb2 but no go, is there some way that these ports need to be turned on? thanks for any help. Ron

looked in the bios they are already enabled are the ports in this "intergrated peripherals" the ones mounted on the motherboard? The ones I am having problems with are on the D bracket connected to the board with a fly lead. I have looked at the motherboard settings with Si Soft Sandra and at the end of the report there is a warning" W2533 disabled host controllers are present check bios" but I can not find any other settings to try apart from the one you mentioned  which is already enabled any other ideas? Thanks Ron.

  • K8N neo4 platinum .. No USB 2.0?

When I bought this board it said that it had 10 USB 2.0 ... well I'm having a problem.  I installed a fresh copy of windows XP and knew that hte original version i had did not have USB 2.0 support, so I installed SP2.  On my old board with SP2 everything worked fine with my external drive, but now for some reason I'm having MAJOR problems with it wanting to read the USB 2.0 drive, and when i turn it on windows even says it's not optimize,d then when i click it it says NO USB 2.0 PORTS AVAILABLE, only 1.1...
    Any help would be appreciated!

My motherboard has 8 usb ports .
To have USB 1.1 capability on all eight the motherboard has two OCHI controllers (each one supports 4 ports by default)
For me to have usb 2.0 capability for all 8 ports , one ECHI controller is needed .
Theese three controllers if they are bios enabled supplies both usb 1.1 and usb 2.0 for all eight ports .
Here's a look in device manager (view by connection)
You'll se the external usb disk enclosure with a wd80 is hooked to the usb root hub that again
is deriving from the EHCI controller .
You also see usb printing support connected to one hub of the standard ohci (usb 1.1) controllers
That is my cannon usb printer which is only usb 1.1 capable .
Do you have any "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" (USB 2.0) listed in device manager at all .
Or any yellow questionmarks somewhere .
    Edit :
All is well then i guess .
Take note of the above device manager view by connection .
It's good for troubleshooting purposes .

  • Some questions about MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra

    Hi to all!
First of all sorry for my bad english  :P
I have some questions regarding this motherboard that i would like to buy.
I've red some times ago that nForce 4 chipset had a bug with the HyperTransport (or similar) so all the motherboards with this chipset were post-poned. Now the german MSI site has posted a press-release of the MSI Neo4 saying that mass-volumes distribution will be in mid december.
I would like to know if some Neo4 were distribuited before nVidia found the bug and (if so) if there's a method to identify the "good" from the "bugged" versions.
The second question is about the possible heatsink. I would like to install a Zalman CNPS-7700 AlCu (with 12x12 silent fan) but I dunno if the heatsink "dimensions" could create problems to some motherboard component.
    Thanks!

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum - Is It Dead? ***PROBLEM SOLVED***

I recently upgraded my system and moved most of the old components into a different case, including the K8N, CPU, memory and PSU.  The only thing that is changing is the hard drive.  When I power on the computer the D-Bracket indicates it is hanging at memory initialization.  I have OCZ PC3200 platinum edition 2gb dual channel kit installed.  I tried to boot with one stick installed in each slot and it still hangs at the same place.  I fear I shorted or damaged the MB somehow...  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

  • MSI K8N2 Neo4 Platinum will not boot - SOLVED!

    Hi
I have just tried powering up my system based on an MS-7125 v1 and it will not boot.
    Symptoms are :
1 long high pitched beep followed by two short ones, followed by two lower pitched tones of similar duration
    D-Bracket - 1 = Red, 2 = Off, 3 & 4 = Green
No display on screen - I changed the graphics card to test that - no improvement
    HELP!
    PLEASE . . .

Please supply us with full info on the system including the power supply and memory.
    PSU = 600W Seasonic S12
    RAM = 2 x 1Gb Corsair Value Select PC3200
All working fine for a couple of years.
Incidentally, I believe that the #2 LED on the D-Bracket may not be displaying red, so the D-Bracket may be trying to display 1 & 2 = Red, 3 & 4 = Green.
I changed the graphics card because that is what the beeps seem to suggest may be wrong - I am pretty confident that it isn't.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum Will not boot when SP2 is installed

I installed everything on my pc. Used MSI live update to get everything up to date. I then realized that I didn't do any windows updates (was up to SP1) When I put sp2 on the pc bluescreens after the windows splash screen. I can bring up in safe , vga , and network enabled modes. I didn't install sp2 on the old bios so I don't know if it is a bios issue. Has anyone else had this problem? I need to put sp2 on eventually...... I was thinking that it might be a vga problem but I don't have another PCIX board to swap.

If you have another computer with a CD burner you can slipstream your copy of XP with SP2 (just google XP SP2 slipstream). Then you can just do a windows repair. If you can't I would suggest doing a windows repair anyways but right after you get into windows install SP2.
To me it sounds like a driver conflict. If neither works, you may have to format. Again when you do install windows then immediatly install SP2, then drivers and so forth.
    Good Luck
    Jeremy

    Hi,
    I had the same problems.
installed with the help of the Diskette (also 2raidO HD), en then the drivers from the CD.
    problem still there.
I then upgraded to 3.7 bios & 6.66 msi nforce (downloaded from MSI website): problem solved.
I later upgraded to the Nvidia 3.70 drivers, no issues.
I do have a problem about the Sound and the Digital Decoder of the DTT3500 Cambridge Soundworks.. (already posted in this tread):
Can't get 5.1 sound running! (with digital output, like on the SB LIVE! 5.1)
    quote below:
I have bought a new PC with an MSI k8n sli platinum MB. this mainboard has a built in soundblaster live!24-bit chip onboard. it works great on headphones and normal 2 set speakers (analog connection).
however, when I try to set them up at the DTT3500 speaker set, trouble begins.
before continuing, just want to say First that my older PC is standing next to it, with a Soundblaster live! 5.1. If I connect with this PC to my speaker set, via the digital uitput, everythin works great. (5.1 surround).
In the DTT3500 manual, when Digital DIN is blinking, it says it isn't recieving any signal, or not the right one (like AC-3). (I know this when on my old PC when I switch to headphones, the digital din is then blinking, which is normal as I disabled Digital output in Windows)
    now my questions:
Is this digital port is ac-3 signal or somthing else on the Soundblaster live! 24-bit?
Do I need to use another type of cable, like SPDIF Din Cable? (I now have a minijack to Din cable)
I tried with optical, it works, but only with 2 speakers (left and right / digital output is on). is this normal? If i look at the manual, it's typical used for gameconsoles with stereo left and right. I guess this is so with the DDT3500 decoder...?
if I try Digital Din on the Decoder, it doesn't work. the Decoder Led keeps blinking. Yet in Windows, digital output is on and 5.1 speakers is selected.
In short, exact the same setup on the Decoder and PC as my older PC.
My guess is the the soundblaster live! 24-bit is an enhanced version of the soundblaster live! 5.1? Am I wrong, I don't know....
I do know that the reviews said you could use the digital port (orange one)"
NOTE, yesterday, I disable the onboard SB live! 24 bit card, plugged in the SB live! 5.1 card from my other PC. This works ok like it should.
I would apreciate any help, as i'm really stuck at the moment & I just hate to disable this lovely onboard card.
