Number formatting - Help Please!

Hi
I have two problems.
1:
I am converting a float eg(-42) to a Float using "new Float(float val)". The resultant Float is positive (42), any ideas?
2:
I have a Double eg(8000) and want to display it as 8,000. Is there any way I can do this using NumberFormat for example?
