Officejet 6000: "Printhead: Missing or Damaged"

I have a new Officejet 6000 that works fine, but occasionally reports "Printhead: Missing or Damaged". When this happens, I just open the lid and close it again and it seems to work fine again. What could cause this? Is it a serious problem? Thanks.

My HP officejet 4620 is not working and has a popup saying "printhead is missing or damaged.  The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, incorrectly installed, or incompatible".   I have never seen this in a printer before.  How do I fix this?  I am tired of buying printers!!!  And tired of feeding them.

  • Officejet 6000 printhead

We recently had to change the color cartridges on our HP Officejet 6000, and afterwards, we started getting the error code on the control panel that is for "The printhead is incompatible" - power button is blinking and all the cartridge buttons are blinking in order from left to right.   The manual troubleshooting says to be sure it is properly installed or to replace the printhead.   The printer is not very old.  I am having my business office research when we bought it.  Is it normal for a printhead to go bad so quickly?  We've only used it for normal printing purposes and only use HP ink products with the printer.
Also, if the printhead needs replaced, I couldn't find anything in the manual on how to change the printhead.  Can anyone give me instructions on this as well?  Thank you very much for your assistance..

    Hi folks
For the Incompatible Printhead message, have you tried cleaning the printhead?

  • Printhead missing or damaged

I followed all the manual cleaning instructions.  My printer is just past the 1 year mark.  Should I replace the printhead, or just buy another printer?

Please read this post then provide some details. What printer model? What operating system?

  • Officejet 6500 E709q Printhead "missing"

    The unit reads
"The printhead appears to be missing, or damaged.
Printing cannot occur without the print head and all ink cartriges installed.

There is nothing in any of the documentation that came with the unit to cover the problem.
    Any ideas.

    Hi @sparky126
I would like to help you with your officejet 6500. I understand you are seeing a message stating the printhead is missing or damaged. Please use the following document to troubleshoot the issue as it pertains to this very issue; 'Printhead Problem' or 'Printhead Appears to be Missing or Damaged' Message Displays on the Printer ....
If the issue persists, you can call HP to see if they have a printhead available ad for how much, and also discuss your out of warranty options. HP may be able to offer you a discount on a newer model instead if you investing the money in to a printhead. It is entirely possible the issue is not the printhead and is instead the contacts or firmware of the printer.
If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
    I hope this helps.

Running on OSx 10.6.8 using a new HP Officejet 6000 printer. How can I get to within 1/8" on all sides of an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. Images and copy cuts off at 5/8" at bottom. HP says it's a mac problem, not an HP problem. I tried every combination of print settings. Nothing has solved the problem. Have I missed something?

Yes you are unfortunately you as the consumer are caught in the middle. I totally disagree with what HP told you, they supply the print drivers to Apple, Apple doesn't write printer drivers that I know of. Look in the print settings to see if you can go below 5/8", I know I can with my HP printers (Laserjet 1012, Color Laserjet 2600N, OfficeJet 7410 & OfficeJet 7700 series) so I'm sure the issue is specific to the OJ6000 series.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A 910A "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged"

I have a yellow ink cartridge that is still 75% full but now my printer is giving me the error message, "Ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged".  I have tried all of the troubleshooting tips recomended by HP and all have failed other than replacing the cartridge, and that worked.  I am trying claim a warranty on this cartridge as it is still well within the warranty date.  HOWEVER, everytime I input the information, the page switches to the sales page!!! I am ready to throw this $350 POS HP 8500a out the door and burn it then post the video on youtube of how crappy the service and product is!  PLEASE GIVE THE DIRECT LINK TO OBTAIN THE WARRANTY ON THIS INK CARTIDGE!!!! Or is this your plan to make people so frustrated that they give up and you don't have to reemburse the customer?  Way to go customer service!!!
        Regards, Joanns

I'd advise calling HP phone support. You'll need to tell them the warranty ends date written on the cartridge...(no need to enter it on the website, as that's just for printer warranty)

  • Officejet pro 8600 plus. Error message: cartridge missing or damaged

Just installed a new printer head to the tune of $120.00. It came with set-up cartridges that you are required to use. Installed new  printer head and cartridges. Now I get the error message of cartridges missing or damaged. I have taken out the cartridges and printer head about 5 times and still get the message. Do I dare try using my old cartridges (which were actually brand new - more $ wasted)?? how can I run a business without a printer, scanner, and fax?!?

I'm having the same issue.  We also had this issue with the original 8600 we purchased (that one only used the demo cartridges before giving the lovely "cartridge missing" error).  The first one was still under warranty, so we had to send it back to HP and get a replacement.  In the meantime, the office was without a printer.  Now, the second 8600 has managed to last through about 8 cartridges (approximately six months) before the same issue arose.   It's even with the same cartridge:  magenta.
I've changed cartridges, removed the print head and cleaned it, cleaned the contacts on cartridge, the print head and even where the print head connects to the printer, and even removed the little white plastic guide wedges and switched them around to try and troubleshoot the situation.   I've rebooted it repeatedly and briefly contemplated banging it vigorously on the sides to beat it into submission.
Alas, it is still showing the error.
I wish I could say I'm a novice when it comes to troubleshooting, but I regularly work on printers and other components.  It is truly frustrating to have a product which does not perform well and which does not easily allow the user to rectify the situation without resorting to a sledgehammer or wine.

  • "missing or damaged" cartridges & a NEW printhead

New ink cartridges...couldn't get black to print.  HP said "need new print head"; bought it & ALL NEW INK CARTRIDES;then said "magenta & photo cartridges are missing or damaged";  bought NEW ones; still says "magenta & photo cartridges are missing or damaged.  HELP!!!!

Thank you for your help.  Got the 2 "missing or damaged" cartridges replaced.  Printer STILL said the same thing.  Turned the printer off for several hours.  When I turned it back on...ALL WAS WELL!

  • Printerhead is missing or damaged

I own and HP OfficeJet 6500 E709n.  The printer was working fine, until I changed the ink cartridges.  After changing all the color ink cartridges, I received an error message stating, " the printhead apprears to be missing or damaged....".
The printer will not work, even after I turned it off than on again.  I'm stuck.  I've changed the cartidges many times before, quite successfully, and don't think I've done anything different this time to cause the error.
    Any suggestions?

  • L7650 missing or damaged cartridge

I've had my HP L7650 All.In One for.at least five years. In March 2014, I had Costco refill my cartridges. They damaged the magenta, so I ordered a brand new one from Staples. I put it in, but I've gotten an error message stating "Missing or damaged K cartridge."
As far as I.know, there is plenty of ink in the black cartridge, but I can't get the printer to even copy a page.
Before that, I was having long delays between computer screen prints and the print copy actually being produced.
What is the first.step, I should take and what.following steps should I take afterward, before I trash this printer?
I have a new printer ready to go, but I would like to get some more life out of the L7650 first, if it can be easily fixed...

Hello Ron, aka @L7650 , welcome to the forums!
I read your post about your Officejet Pro L7650 showing you there is missing or damaged ink cartridges or printheads. I would suggest trying out the steps in the guides below for this issue. • Error message 'One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged'.

Hi, can someone help suggest what i do next? I'm getting the above error message on the main black ink cartridge. I've tried 3 different cartridges so I'm pretty sure it's not the actual catridge that's a problem as they can't all be faulty. There's no problem with the other 4 cartridges.

    Hello MTBB,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to see if there is anything more to suggest regarding the cartridge error on the printer. What is the model of the printer you are having the issue with?
Since you have done - in my opinion - the best troubleshooting step by replacing the cartridges already, it may be a printhead issue. Take a look through this HP document: 'Incompatible Print Cartridge', 'Print Cartridge Problem', or 'Cartridge Missing or Damaged' Message..., it may have a step or two more worth trying.
    Thanks, for posting.
