OS Patching and other routine maintenance window

Apologize for length, just trying to get an idea of how other clients handle routine downtime such as DB patching, OS patching, Tidal Patching etc. as well as Disaster Recovery planning.
Currently we are on a Window master in 5.3 but are currently in the middle of an upgrade to 6.1 moving to Linux masters.  We use the Fault Master which means that unless there is a definite requirement to bring the entire environment down, we always have a tidal master running in PRD even during Win Patching which occurs once every 4 weeks Sun from 3 - 5 am.  Most of our majors systems that use Tidal are also down during that timeframe.
One of the masters has a patching win of 3 - 4am and the other has a 4 - 5am.  I believe FM patches on another week.  Because we have a Tidal 5.3 bug that is sensitive to network performance, patching both masters on the same day ensures that after the patching window is complete that we  always end up with a live master that is on the same data center as the DB cluster (which sort of mitigates our exposure to the bug) .
With 6.1 and the bug supposeded fixed, the new patching schedule has both masters being patched on different weeks.
These are my questions:
- Dees any one see any pros and cons with patching each master on a different week?
- Even with the low number of transactions, should we be setting the queue = 0 prior to the patching and failover?  We haven't done this on Windows and no one's complained.
- In 6.1 , if the live master happens to be the backup master, what happens when the FM goes down for patching?  Can the FM only go down when primary master is the live master?  We have our fault tolerance set to auto ( either masters can take over as live ).
- In windows, we have the master services set to auto - is there a reason not to do the same for Linux after the server bounces?  (GIven that in 6.1 there is an order to bringing things up FM, master then CM).  I have seen times when master came down and CM was up - is that not acceptable?  Should CM always be bounced after the master bounces?
On a more advanced topic with DR -
Are any other client on a clustered DB (like Oracle RAC)?  Are you able keep Tidal running somehow during DB cluster patching or is the hard rule always to bring TIDAL down?  I am aware at least on 5.3 that Tidal losing connection to the DB is NOT pretty.  Lots of stuck jobs and other data integrity issues.  The question arises because DB team is looking to take advantage of some Oracle features to see if we can patch DB without having to bring down Tidal entirely.  Can perhaps failing over and forcing that new master to a specific DB cluster that will be available be an option?
With CM on load balancers, do people use a 'TES under downtime maintained please log in again at 6:00 am' type http redirect so that the users get something more informative whenTIdal is down.  What do you use for the load balancer to detect Tidal is down?  Access to a file in the webserver?  An actual signon attempt?  Are you able to force a redirect anytime even when CMs are up just so no on else can log in other than admins (whihc is a nice feature especially right after a system issue)?  How to folks handle system availabily after a major system issue - do you limit access to TES until some system sanity tests and test jobs ave been run?  If so, how do you do it?
Lastly, does anyone have a backup fault monitor installed on another data center for DR purposes?  Have you been able to make it work?  I am assuming  bringing stand-by FM means having to reconfigure all the masters to point to this.  DO you have scripts for doing this or more manual?  Can't remember if this is all on config files or actually SQL updates will need to be made behind the scenes.  We currently do do this in 5.3 but noticed in our 6.1 architecture that this component is a single point of failure if we lose a data center.

Meant to say we currently don't have a backup fault monitor in 5.3 but wanted to explore it with 6.1

Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows how can I download them with out the install cd?

Or for the same price you can order a new Snow Leopard disk. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
That would give you Boot Camp 3.0 drivers. With Snow Leopard and Boot Camp 3.0 you can install Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. With Lion and Boot Camp 4.0 you can only install Windows 7. If you install Lion with Boot Camp 3 and XP or Vista already on it it will work.

  • SCCM 2012 R2: easy way to disable/enable MULTIPLE maintenance windows at once?

I have been racking my brain on this one for a while.
Scenario: you have an ADR set up that is deploying updates once a month. You have multiple collections set up that each have their own special maintenance window (example: 1st weekend - sat - 8-9pm)
Then, one week you are asked to not deploy updates for the upcoming weekend. Well, the ADR already ran and the machines for "1st weekend" are just waiting for the maintenance window to open. Now, at this point you can obviously go into EACH collection
associated with "1st weekend" and disable the maintenance window. But if you are asked to do this often and/or you have multiple collections with maintenance windows this could be a hassle.
Is there a way to easily enable and disable multiple maintenance windows at a time?
GUI: I have not found a way to select multiple collections and disable all MWs
PowerShell-module: set-CMMaintenanceWindow doesn't appear to have ability to modify "IsEnabled" property of MWs
PowerShell-WMI: Can't find in WMI where to modify "Isenabled" Property
    Please see my other thread
    regarding PowerShell
What other creative options are there? Disable a service via PowerShell on members of "1st Weekend" collections? Which service? Should I be looking in SQL? Where? Other options in GUI?
I may end up getting stuck doing this manually but I want to make sure I am not overlooking something first... it's such a simple task - just seems like there should be an easy way to accomplish this.
(And please, for the sake of my question, lets not get into the semantics of whether or not the ADR technically DEPLOYS the updates or not.)

I didn't even think about that.... so having one MW that is disabled or having no MW at all would allow the client to install at will? I guess I was thinking that if it had a MW but it was disabled it just wouldn't update.
The MWs on the collections are all different.
Perhaps I need to re-assess my approach...
The original plan was to have one ADR (patch tuesday) update 1 SUG (which is deployed to all machines) each month. Machines would then install based off MWs.
Now I'm thinking it might be best to have 2 ADRS:
ADR1- updates existing SUG which is already deployed to Dev/Test machines.
ADR2- creates new SUG - which I then manually deploy to Prod collections.
This would automate the deployment to Non-Prod machines but it would give me the power to withhold updates to Prod machines for the month if needed.

  • CM12 SP1 CU1 - CM12 R2 - Maintenance Windows

Hi guys, I'm getting slowly ready to upgrade production to R2 and I just want to double check that I understand this right since I missed to observe this during my lab tests.
I currently have a lot of MWs set in 2012 SP1. All of them are now set with past dates.
If I was to upgrade today, they will convert to All Deployments maintenance windows, is that correct?
As a result of that, systems that are pending reboot because of software update installation
(software updates are allowed to install but not reboot outside of MW as per deployment settings) will not reboot.
Also, I found this in documentation but it is not clear to me.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712696.aspx#BKMK_MaintenanceWindow
It talks about software updates installation when general and software update maintenance windows are configured.
    What about reboots?
If I have general and software updates maintenance windows configured: General for 24 hours and Software Updates for 4 hours on the same date what happens to:
    a) Software Updates deployment with settings to install outside MW but reboot within MW?
I guess that it will install on the deadline I've scheduled outside of Software Updates MW but will reboot when Software Updates MW starts, is that correct?
Plan for a Software Updates Maintenance Window
Starting in System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, you can add a maintenance window dedicated for software updates installation. This lets you configure a general maintenance window and a
different maintenance window for software updates. When a general maintenance window and software updates maintenance window are both configured, clients install software updates only during the software updates maintenance window. For more information about
maintenance windows, see How to Use Maintenance Windows in Configuration Manager.

Your current maintenance windows will convert to all deployment maintenance windows.  You must configure your software update ones separately.  Your systems will not reboot until the maintenance window opens up, that is if you did not configure
    reboots outside of maintenance windows.
Your software updates will install at any time because you allowed it outside of maintenance windows.  Your software updates that are pending reboots will stay pending until the maintenance window opens and allows the reboot.
It looks like you are spot on.
    Best, Jacob I'm a PC.

  • HT5628 I have OSX 10.9.1 on my iMac and want to install Windows 8.1. I've read that people are having problems with 8.1. What should I do?

I'm getting ready to partition my drive and install Windows. I've read that there are wifi and other problems with Windows 8.1. That I should use 8.0. Microsoft does not sell 8.0 anymore. They want you to buy 8.1. What should I do? Any help would be appreciated.

Read the Boot Camp Help first. Boot Camp does not yet support Windows 8.1 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements. If you insist on installing 8.1 use a virtual machine like parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox.

  • PSU patching and backup

    Hello,
When applying PSU patches and other interim patches, would you guys say it's necessary to backup the Oracle Home in question and the central inventory before applying the patch?
I know that the patch is stored in the .patch_storage directory so that Opatch can roll it back at a later point. Would this suffice or do you recommend a separate backup of the binaries and inventory as well?
    thanks.

If in case of relinking you have any issue. In less cases which cannot be rolledback.
So always take ORACLE_HOM & Inventory backup too when all services(instance & listeners..) are down,

  • SCCM fails to deploy Patches to client with in the maintenance windows.

    Hi,
I am new to Patchng through SCCM just 7 months of experience.
I deploy the patches regular month basis as microsoft release the patches every month. till now the patch deployment was happening smoothly, but from last month i am facing issue like the SCCM failed to push the patches with in the provided maintenance window.
even if the maintenance window over client will not get install.
i have checked the enforcement status report for the same collection which i deployed, the status is always downloading updtaes.
We have collection called Workstation and servers, both the collections compliance is less like 20% or lesser than that.
Arround 800 Workstations deployed and given deadline 10 days. with suppressed reboot.
Arround 70 Servers deployed with with automatic reboot via Maintenance window.
deadline to install is 1 hour ahead of maintenance window.
It would be great if any one suggest the solution to make software update deployment through SCCM  with in the maintenance window.

Vista is not a supported OS for Acrobat XI Pro.

  • Software Updates, Tray Pop-ups and Maintenance Windows

I will try to keep it to the point.
End Users in Europe power down their machines every night. Patch Tuesday rolls around, we set the deadline to patch for one week
later (the following Tuesday) @ 10pm.
So they come in that following Wednesday morning, power on their system and bam, software updates are installed and reboots are forced right
there in their earlier AM which is upsetting them.
Our settings? Deployment is required, detail level is “only success and error messages”, “Display in Software Center and show all notifications”, and when the installation
deadline is reached allow the following activities to be performed outside the maintenance window: “Software Update Installation” and “System Restart”.
So before I get a whole bunch of, “disable reboots” or “notify your users” or “use WOL”. I want to discuss this on another angle.
We are getting reports that users are not seeing the notifications. As you can see it is set to all notifications. Likely they are happening and they are not seeing
    them.
Main Question: Is there a way via a registry tweak or client setting that will do one of the following:
Make the tray popups more frequent
Make the tray popups last longer
Bring the main “hey things to patch screen” come up without clicking the tray popup
Anything we can do to make the notification BEFORE the deadline more in their faces would be ideal. Anyone?

This happened because patch updates reached deadline and installed forcefully and restart the machines. from
the software center and system tray. Just configure that in the deployment
Unless the site wide hide deployments option is selected,
you will get icons in the system tray. When that is selected, you do NOT get icons at all. If this is enabled, but you suppress the deployment itself, then you get the icons but not balloons.

I have been updating my PSE since 10. Recently I purchased PSE13 as I didn't see an update for my 12. I was changing to a new laptop as my old laptop had been patched and worked and was showing signs of giving out. It was a Window's 7OS. My new one is a Windows 8 OS so I bought the 13 and downloaded it on the new laptop. Our desktop had died so I downloaded the 13 on the new  desk computer also. Not thinking I downloaded 13 on my old laptop as I hope to get it patched up enough to be a backup for my photography. When I tried to activate it I realized that I had downloaded it too often. I didn't know you could only use it on two computers. Learn something new every day.. Any way I removed it and now my PSE 12 does not seem to be working. Now it could be something that I did or something that is an issue with the laptop. this laptop has all the previous editions on board as I always tried to update, except for the year I got a really good deal on Black Friday. I also notice that the new laptop has a copy of PSE 12 in the program list. To my knowledge I have never deactivated any of my PSE's except the extra 13 downloaded. Bottom line, do I need to go in and deactivate previous PSE versions and removed them from my computer? I could certainly use the space and secondly, can I deactivate the PSE 12 and then go back and reacitivate it and install it again on the old laptop or the desktop, whichever I deside would be the most appropriate place for the newer program. For the PSE 12 since it is an updater for 11, does the 11   still need to be on the laptop? thanks for anyone who can understand what I am trying to say and can advise me as to my next move. Thank you very much.

Why start a new and very similar thread to your other one which you have not responded to (have you read the replies?)

  • After System Restore windows programs not loading, and other issues!

To preface this I have no interest in keeping vista on here I have a CD with windows7 setup on it that I would like to install either on a new partition or over the exsisting one but no clue how to do this right, and when I tried booting up from the CD it gave me an error, so I can't do the setup that way, however I did get a version of windows xp (hiren's minixp) to boot from a thumbdrive, however I could not get my wireless internet to work on it. however thru ethernet it did, but need wifi!) I need a computer for tomorrow morning for my new job orientation is done thru a website and I need a computer to use at thehotel (im out of town) so its not an option taking it to a repair shop tomorrow (its sunday and all), or sending back to lenovo plus its outta warranty.
Help! I am very novice at best with techy stuff so I will try to explain this the best that I can. I've had a lenovo N500 Laptop running Vista Home Edition for a couple years now. It did not come with any recover cd's or anything like that. It was starting to run slow, so I figured I'd do the old trusty Factory Restore and start fresh, always did the trick on other computers I owned with windows. Well I went through the whole process of restoring it, and did the initial system setup and naming. When it loaded my desktop for the first time it was all downhill from there. There is no IE installed, no default programs would open, instead I got this error message (example when opening Windows Mail).
    C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe
The specified path does not exsist.
Check the patch, and then try again.
It does this for every program. Here's the thing the only C:\ Drive that shows up is assigned to removable disk. Here are the current labels for my default Drives.
    Lenovo(Q
    ServiceV003(S
    SW_Preload(D
So I think the issues possibly that when it was reformatted it labeled the drive a different letter, so it's trying to pull the files from the C drive as a path,. but it needs to be q or s or d or something. Keep in mind this is my very novice theory.

    for wireless issue:
have you checked device managemer for unknown/non-installed devices? you may need to install drivers for your adapters.
try to press f8 when you see lenovo logo, then load "safe mode with networking", check if the adapters work.
can you tell us what error you got when you tried to install win7? also, some of applications doesn't come with preloaded systems so you need to install them later ( as windows mail, msn messenger )

  • Patch and administer oracle with different user id other than "oracle" user

    Hi Friends,
This is question about oracle on Windows. Can we patch and administer all parts of oracle with differnt user id than one from which we installed?
Example, If we install an oracle from user "oracle" than can we install patches or other admin work including backup and everything with user "a" ,"b"?
Doen't it need to be a same user for pacthing and other critical administration work?
help me understanding this with an example.
    Thanks in advance.

Its always good to patch Oracle with the same user from which you installed the user. Oracle sets certain permissions or modifies the DCOM settings when you install the Oracle from a certain user which would not be same for other user. So It is always recommended to use the same user for patching.

  • Impdp and scheduler maintenance window

    Environment: Oracle 11.1.0.7.0 running on HP-UX B.11.31 U ia64.
I was performing import using impdp. Before starting the import, I manaully disabled the maintenance window.
But once, import over, when I try to enable the maintenance window, when I checked, it got already enabled.
On investigating found that the timing of enable match with the import finish time.
    Before performing the import using impdp, I have disabled maintenance window using;
    DBMS_SCHEDULER.DISABLE(name=> mwindow,force=>TRUE);
    After Import, when i checked the maintenance window using;
    SELECT
    w.window_name,
    w.repeat_interval,
    w.duration,
    w.enabled
    FROM dba_scheduler_windows w
the value as ENABLED = TRUE.
On querying the select * from DBA_SCHEDULER_WINDOW_LOG, the timing of LOG_DATE matches with the import impdp finish time. However on the column ADDITIONAL_INFO
    has value of REASON="manually enabled"

Are you doing a system import here ?
If you are doing a system import then properties of the maintenance window will also be imported and that may include enabling the window.
Since a system export exports system-level properties as well, you might need to disable the maintenance window before doing your system export.
    Hope this helps,
    Ravi.

  • About maintenance windows and client restart settings

    Scenario:
I have an application which is configured so that ConfigMgr Client will force a restart after the installation. This application is going to be deployed to a collection of computers which are also members of another collection that has maintenance window
of 3 hours configured. The default client settings for all the computers have been configured so that users are notified about possible restart for 1440 minutes (24h).
    When the deployment is made:
If there are logged on users (on the desktop or locked screen), will the software just install in the 3 hour maintenance window and notify the user about the reboot for 24h after the installation?
If there are not logged on users will it install and reboot the computer?
How this kind of thing should be configured so that the computers will reboot in the maintenance window if they automatically do not with these settings (if or if not there are logged on users on the computers) ?

    So I tested this:
User logged on during the MW -> Software installation starts at the maintenance window but asks for the reboot from the user so no go here
User not logged on during the MW -> Software installs and reboots straight away
    Solution I'm thinking:
Client Settings Collection that includes all the Maintenance Window Collections and I shall deploy different Client settings (where the reboot time is less than the actual MW) to that collection. This could be also handled with "Install only when user is
not logged on" for the application's deployment type but then again I don't think you can do that kind of setting for software updates or do you?

  • Maintenance Windows and Installation Deadline

I know this has been discussed many times in the past, but I wanted to clarify in my mind what I think happens.
I have a maintenance window on a collection that is daily between 3:30am and 5:30am.  I create a deployment for software updates with an available time at 2:00am.  I specify the installation deadline in the deployment for 3:00am.
In the Deadline behavior (user experience) I do not have either option checked (Software updates installation and System restart). So, my MW will not be ignored.
With these settings, the needed updates will be downloaded, but not installed until the start of the maintenance window at 3:30am. (in essence, the deadline should be "before" the MW if I want them to install at the next MW).
    Thanks!
