Pismo Powerbook- failure to start up

I would appreciate any advice regarding my Pismo Powerbook (500 MHz, 386 Mb RAM, 40 gb hard drive, Mac OS 10.4.11) not being able to boot up.
By swapping parts with another Pismo Powerbook, I've determined that the following are not the problem (at least as far as I know):
Logic board
Processor
Hard drive
PRAM battery
Powerbook battery
During booting, there was no chime, but a humming noise is heard and the keyboard capslock or numlock lights up when pressed.
The screen does not light up of course and remains dark (screen problem, would a bad display prevent startup?).
Previously, the computer did power up once in a blue moon but now it remained not being able to do so. I did check for loose connections and did not find any.
Since I just upgraded this old workhorse recently (400 MHz to 500 MHz processor and bigger hard drive), I would really like to keep it alive.
Thanks in advance for any input.

  • PowerBook Won't Start with Extra Gig Of Ram

    Hello World,
Well...so much for do it yourself. God knows I've done it before but here's the story. I just bought a used Powerbook G4 with OX 10.5.8 running at 1.5 Ghz with one Gig DDRSDRAM. I bought another gig stick of ram...put both of them in to night and the Powerbook will not start. So in the interest of trouble shooting...I installed each gig of ram individually. They each said...individually...that they were 1gig DDR SDRAM stick. The computer started with each stick of ram so I know they both work. I was under the impression that the G4 Powerbook could take 2 gig of ram max in configuration of 2---1 gig sticks.
OK....There it is. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thank you Dave R

AFAIK you are correct that the 2GB configuration should work. There is a history of one DIMM slot going bad, but then the computer should still start, just not show the bad slot in the total RAM. You might still try running with one stick in one slot, then the other slot as a check.
Some users anecdotally seem to find the machines fussy about RAM, although usually manifested in erratic operation, not failure to start.
What exactly happens when you try to start with 2GB? Nothing at all? No start sound? No optical or HD drive noise? No screen light/response? No sleep light blinks?

  • Pismo PowerBook--no video

    Hi all,
I have a Pismo PowerBook that has no video for both the internal display and any attached external displays. It seems to boot up just fine as I can hear the hard drive working and can even put the computer to sleep by pressing the power button followed by the "s" key.
I initially thought that this must be a problem with the logic board, so I ordered a replacement from ifixit.com and installed it. The new board produces exactly the same symptoms as before: no video from any source. Other than a dead replacement logic board, is there anything else that would cause this problem?
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Pismo PowerBook Time Remaining

I have a Pismo PowerBook that since upgrading to 10.4 will no longer calculate the time remaining on it's battery. It calculates percentages correctly, but not time remaining. Has anyone heard of this problem?

I doubt Apple has ANY interest in fixing any problems which are hardware-specific to older, discontinued systems. Much better to leave the bugs intact and try to convince us to buy a new one.
The thing is, if they built a fast G4 Powerbook that was as versatile, easily upgradeable and well-engineered as Pismo, I probably would...

  • ILife 06- install only iTunes on G3-Pismo Powerbook

Due to a "trashing" error I inadvertantly removed the 05 program version of iTunes from my G3 500mhz Pismo Computer. Since the 06 iLife vs is now available I note that the minimun system standards require a G4 at 667 mhz. Two questions, can the 06 iLife package be installed on the G3 Pismo and if so is there a way to install only the iTune program? If neither are possible is new 05 iLife software still available? Appreciate any help. Bob S

If the system did not come to you with the iLife '05 disks, then you really don't have a legal copy of the software. I'd suggest checking with Apple retailers or possibly eBay and see if you can find a copy of iLife '05 that you can purchase. Amazon has listings for it, and you can probably find is elsewhere as well (perhaps eBay).

  • Can't Observer Pismo PowerBooks with Apple Remote Desktop 3.0

Today I installed ARD3.0 on a Dual G5 2GHz PowerMac and went through the process of Manage>Update Client Software on all Macs on the LAN: G5 Quad, 2 x Pismo G3 PowerBooks, G4-733 and a Dual G4-500.
All updates were successful after enabling ALL Privileges of the ARD 2 clients. However when I try to Observe/Control either of the Pismo PowerBooks, the connection times out with a "Connection Failed" message.
I can access all the other functions, like Update software, reporting and Spotlight (AFAIK)
There are no problems on the G4s or the G5 Quad. All function seem to working as advertised.
ALL comps are at Tiger 10.4.6.
The only difference in the network connections is that the all the G4s and G5s are on a Gigabit Switch, and the Pismos are on a 100Mb switch - The Gb switch is up-linked to the 100Mb switch, which uplinks to the router.
Any help or suggestions on how to get the Observe/Contol functions working on the Pismos would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Pismo Powerbook G3 - won't start! Fan just sounds like a vaccume cleanener!

    Hi everyone,
I was running Photoshop under OS 9 for the first time today (Sunday April 30th 2006) when a severe error occured.
When the battery OR the A/C are plugged in, it doesn't startup or respond - only the vaccume-cleaner like fan kicks up again.
    ::: How this occured today:
It was sitting, plugged in with an open .jpg image of my mother and I onscreen. The powerbook was alone on a table, plugged into the wall.
I sat down listening to my iPod, and without having touched it, watched the screen glitch out (turn a shade of green, and tile in 3" wide vertical bands). Numerous strangled and frantic beeping sounds emit from the speakers, and the internal fan (on the left side) continually rev up and down. The screen went black after about 10 seconds of this - and would not respond to anything until I unplugged it and pulled the battery.
I've only had this powerbook for two weeks - is there any reason or solution for this issue?
    Thanks in advance everyone!
    -Blayne Scott
    Peterborough, Ontario

    Blayne,
Does this powerbook have some kind of a return policy from the buyer? If so, you may want to consider it.
As Tom suggested, you may want to try reseating the microprocessor card, but first...
    - A partitioned HD would not cause this issue.
    - The white screen with black text is either a kernal panic in OSX or it has for some reason booted into Open Firmware, then quickly shut down or crashed.
    I would first try this:
    - remove the main battery, disconnect the power adapter, remove the DVD-ROM drive from the media bay and disconnect all peripherals; be sure the display is vertical or the 'book will want to tip backwards;
    - reset the power manager; press the reset button for 10 seconds on the back panel;
    - now connect just the power adapter and try starting.
If you get the startup chime with the white screen/black text/quit as before, make sure the 'book is shut down (just unplug the power adapter, then reconnect it), then reset the PRAM. Assuming the 'book will start as before with a startup chime, you may be able to reset the PRAM. Press/hold the four keys for two startup chimes, then release.
If no change in the behavior, I would follow Tom's advice and reseat the microprocessor card. Here's what to do:
Remove all power > lift off the keyboard (do not disconnect, just lay it face down on the palm rest) > remove the aluminum heat shield > remove the top memory module > press down •VERY• hard on the right side of the microprocessor card next to the HD and closest to the palm rest. Do not be afraid to press hard.
Now, before any reassembly, plug in the power adapter, wait a few seconds, then press the power button. If it starts, allow it to finish booting, then press/hold the power button until it shuts down. Reinstall the top memory module and try the same startup process.
There are many other troubleshooting suggestions but let's see what you get to this point.
This link shows the aluminum heat shield to remove and the microprocessor card with the memory module in the top slot. If you enlarge the bottom picture, you can see the module to remove. Do not remove components than I have not mentioned...the takeapart guide describes a full disassembly.

  • Powerbook refusing to start up.

    Hi,
My powerbook is refusing to start up, it gets to a white screen with the grey apple logo, and then stops, It just stays on that screen.
i've used the install disc to use disk utility it verifies and repairs my permissions fine.
But after trying to repair my disc has the disc contained an error, it couldn't complete it's task, the message i was given was:
Keys out of order (this was in red)
    rebuilding catalog B-tree
The volume Mackintosh HD not repaired
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    and that was that.
i've also tried doing a firmware boot. Now I'm really not sure what's going on? or what to do, I've got files on there which I havent had a chance to back up do to working on them at the time. And so I need them, any advice? is my hard drive failing? because this problem has cropped up a number of times but I've usually managed to get it back up and running after a few attempts.

I had exactly the same problem!! but after i tried to repair the disk, fortunatly it managed to work. but then then as soon as i got the machine re-started i backed up the disk, did a 7 pass erase and then started from scratch.. it was a painful exercise but taught me the importance of an external back-up. What i would suggest is that you find another mac, and see if you can access your HDD via the other mac in firewire diskmode. This should enable you to get the data you need of your HDD and then do what i did... i.e. erase and re-install.. Hope that help.. and good luck.

  • Powerbook Won't Start Up

I've had my PowerBook for approximately 3 years now. Yesterday, while working on it, it froze up completely. Mouse would not move, no spinning wheel, nothing. I reset via the power button. As it launches, I get the gray screen and the apple, but all it does is sit there as if processing an attempted startup. It will not advance past this screen.
I have zapped PRAM. No help.
I ran Disk Utilities. I get the following message: "Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit."
Also: "1 volume could not be repaired because of an error."
Does this sound like a hard disk crash?
Amazingly, I tried starting up this AM and it started up successfully. I ran a Software Update session to see if this might help. But when it attempted to restart after installing software, that locked up. I ended up having to power down again.
Now when I power up, same problem I originally had. I cannot advance past the "thinking apple" gray screen at launch. Any thoughts?

Assume you ran disk utility from your OS X CD, since you can't test the drive you're booted from.
When disk utility can't repair something and reports a failure on exit, there are a few options. First, using a program like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro may fix the problem, and in many cases does fix the problem. If, however, one of those programs can't fix the problem, you can try wiping the disk clean and writing zero's on the disk, then reload from backup. Or, just replace the hard drive.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512MB RAM

Hi, miek. Welcome to the Discussions.
Here is some general advice on troubleshooting shared library errors.
A shared library error, in general terms, implies a missing, corrupted, or incompatible application or operating system framework. Details on frameworks and shared libraries (heavy technical reading) can be found in the "Frameworks" section of the "Software Development Overview" chapter of the Apple Developer Connection document Mac OS X Technology Overview, and the Framework Programming Guide.
Causes for shared library errors include:
    • The affected application has been corrupted and must be reinstalled.
    • Running incompatible versions of two applications with interdependent shared libraries.
    • Disk or permission corruption.
    • Corrupted operating system installation.
    To resolve shared library errors:
    1. As a start, perform a general checkup by running the procedure specified in my Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption FAQ.
    2. If the problem persists and only one application is affected, uninstall, then reinstall the affected application. See my "Uninstalling applications" FAQ for important advice on uninstalling software.
    3. If the problem persists, multiple applications are affected, or the shared library in question is part of the operating system, then reinstall Mac OS X using the Archive and Install process. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Pismo (powerbook g3 with firewire) upgrade to mac osx 10.4.9

After having this Powerbook G3 Pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 USB ports) I decided to upgrade from 10.3 up to 10.4.9 (if doable).
Since this Powerbook G3 had a 5.59 GB hard drive (which had 12% free space) and 512MB RAM I could tell there were many things that had to be done but I'd try them in steps first.
I ordered additional RAM (2 512MB cards from www.powerbookmedic.com) for $189.90 ($94.95 each 512MB card). The idea would be replacing the two 256MB cards. The cards arrived 3 days later and I had no trouble replacing the top 256MB card (thus going from 512MB to 768MB) but the lower card was going to be a bit of trouble.
I noticed a performance change right away with activity monitor (CPU usage, system memory, etc) and decided it would be worth it to continue.
Circuit City in Deerfield Beach, Florida is an authorized Apple service center so a trip to them was next. I explained that I wanted the hard drive replaced (5.56 GB) with a 60 GB one ($80 for the hard drive), and install the 512MB card that I brought with me ($30 labor). Paid for all of items ($80 for hard drive plus $30 for labor) and went home.
A few hours later Circuit City called up and said I could pick up the Powerbook on Sunday morning after 11:00. Wow!
Picked it up and tested a few items by doing a software update (it now had 10.3 loaded on to the 60 GB drive). I used Circuit City's wireless connection there at the service counter. All the updates came up fine (glad they did not charge me for bandwidth).
Off to home and where I still had my Mac OS X 10.4 DVD from my MacBoook Pro 17". Put in the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD and kept my fingers crossed. It worked, took about 45 minutes all said and down.
Under system preferences made sure that synching thru .Mac was enabled so now my Powerbook G3 has all the addressbook, bookmarks, iCal, etc of my Macbook Pro.
Not a lot of dollars ($300) to get a 7 year old computer (February 2000 when purchased) to year 2007.
Can't say it would work the same if I had a lombard or wallstreet version but it certainly did work out well for pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 usb ports). It makes me think how advanced this powerbook g3 was back in early 2000.

    Hi sanchezpaulk!
