PowerBook Charger Broken

My PowerBook G4 (12" • PowerBook6,4) would not start. No reaction at al.
Tried to reset the PMU -- that did nothing.
I had just bought a replacement battery but even after being plugged in for a long time the battery LED lights on the back showed zero lights. The power charger indicator light was a strong amber. Couldn't figure out what was wrong until I tried a different power charger from another mac laptop I have. The G4 started right up.
Questions:
Can these power chargers go bad with time?
The charger indicator light shows a strong amber. So power seems to be on. Why is it not feeding power to the computer?
All for now.
Marc

but the powerbook charger I have is also a 85 Watt Magsafe.
    Hope this additional info helps
None of the powerbooks came with a MagSafe adapter. It was introduced with the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Are you sure it is a powerbook adapter? Here are all the adapters and models used on.

  • Why won't my Powerbook charge?

    Hi there,
my 12" 1.33ghz Powerbook is having some power problems. I heard some crackling an then my ac adapter stopped charging the battery and powering the computer. The battery ran out of juice soon enough. I bought a new charger and it still didn't turn on or charge the battery. I bought a new battery and the computer does turn on, but still does not charge.
I read other threads suggesting a PRAM and/or PMU reset so I tried them and neither made the charging happen. So, is my DC input shot? Should I just take the charge I have and migrate my info to a new computer. Is there anything else I could do?
    I appreciate any help offered!

The problem with debugging Apple Powerbook charging problems is that there isn't a system check, so you have to fix it by elimination. Is your new power adapter the same wattage as the one you replaced (it can be higher and be OK) - should be at least 45 watts.
Assuming that the charger is good, and that the new battery is good, there are only two other components in the charging circuit ... the dc-in card and the logic board. If the female socket in the Powerbook for the power adapter is loose, that would point to a replacement dc-in card being needed. Otherwise, you can replace the DC-in card, and it might fix the problem, but if not, then it's a logic board problem, which would require a replacement logic board.
If you decided to move to another computer, you could pull your hard drive out, mount it in an external drive case for 2.5" parallel ATA hard drives, and access the contents from another system.

  • IBook use Powerbook charger?

My iBook charger has begun to work intermittently. I had a Powerbook G4 titanium before this iBook and the same time happened to it. Eventually, it began to spark, and I had to replace it.
My question is, can I use the Powerbook charger on my iBook? I thought I read somewhere not to do that, but it seems that since the replacement chargers Apple sells is for both the Powerbook and iBook that I should be able to do this. I just wanted to ask before I tried it.
    Thanks!
    Sharon

    Hi Sharon,
Yes, you can use it. iBooks and PowerBooks use the same 65w adapter.

  • My PowerBook was broken when I took it out of box

I bought a PowerBook for my mom for her birthday (I have a 15" and she loves it so I bought her a 12") I waited a week to open it and only opened it before her birthday so that I could install some of the software that I have. To my shock the left side (where the charger plugs in) is dented!! It looks like someone dropped it. I brought it to apple and they said they could do nothing because I cannot prove that it wasn't me who dropped it!! I don't know what to do....$1100 for something that it broken??!! Help me please!!

  • Powerbook charge caught on FIRE!!!!!

MY POWERBOOK'S GENUINE APPLE CHARGER CAUGHT ON FIRE!!
    Has anyone elses done similar?
It burnt the floor and if unattended could have burned down the whole house! I'm shocked that this could have happened. Apple USUALLY have really high quality products. Its making me wonder if I should buy the new macbook or not. (The powerbook is in need of replacement anyway....so old!) I tried to call that apple number 133 622 but the first thing they ask for is the serial,...which I don't have in front of me at the moment....so I decided to come here. Is that the only number they have for support?

I'm 95% sure Apple would have sent you a replacement AC adapter without charge or protest if you had gone to Apple in the first place. Complaining here does no one any good, frankly; those adapters were on the market for six or seven years, and the number of failures like yours has been very low. Not negligible, certainly, but very low. There were several modifications to the design and construction of Powerbook AC adapters during those years, all of which made them more robust. There have been additional improvements since then in the adapters sold with MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Older Powerbook G4s and the least durable adapters that were sold with them in their early years are passing out of use, and the time for spreading alarms about them has also passed. Apple still addresses occasional serious failures like yours on a case-by-case basis, warranty or no warranty. We occasionally hear about them here.

  • SELLING POWERBOOK G4 BROKEN refurbish and will be fine

    My Item Is:
    15inch PowerBook G4
    15.2-inch TFT Display
    1280x854 resolution
    1.25GHz PowerPC G4
    512MB DDR333 SDRAM
    80GB
    SUPERDRIVE
    Hard Drive
    ATI Mobility Radeon
    9700 (64 MB DDR)
    Backlit keyboard
    Gigabit Ethernet
    FireWire 400 & 800
    Analog audio in/out
    DVI & S-Video out
This was a top of the line PowerBook G4 purchased in 2004. It is now broken - at least that is what I assume. It will not boot up to the destop but rather blinks a flashing folder when you turn it on.
It does recognize a hard drive when I start it up in Target Mode. Might be something wrong with the logic board... This I am unsure of.
This laptops LCD monitor is not in perfect condition either. It works but you have to fiddle with it to get it to work. The top 80% always works and then you have to push the bottom left part of the screen to get it to work. I personally bought a monitor for it so I wouldnt have to deal with it.
Last issue with this laptop is that the F1 key is missing and the escape key does not work. For this problem I bought a wireless keyboard.
    This product will come with:
the operating disk that it was purchased with (OSX)
    battery
    power cord
    extension for power cord
    DVI cable
    instruction manuel
    iLife disk
Pretty much everything that it came with.
This product is - like i stated - inoperative right now. I am not the best with computers and was planning on buying a new one and that is just what I did once this all occured.

  • A fallen PowerBook, a broken harddrive?

    Hi there,
My PowerBook G4 fell a while ago and now i have a problem. It will go on, but you can't call it a boot because you don't hear the mac-sound, and i can't see any video or eject my disk from the cdrom-player, which was still in there. I hooked my book up with an external display but that won't show anything either. Does this sound like a broken/disconnected harddrive or am i talking nonsense? I seek help!

Connect them with a FireWire cable and start up the PowerBook with the T key held down.

  • PowerBook Charging Problem?

I have a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet Edition. I have two batteries and a standard charger. When both batteries are in and the Power Adapter is plugged in, the top corner of the screen shows one battery with a 'lightning bolt' and the other with a 'wall plug.' Everything works fine, however the batteries do not charge. They only charge while the computer is off. This is not a major problem, but I would be nice if they could charge while I am using it.
    Thanks

    mdk11,
If all hardware is sound, only one battery will charge at a time; the same is true while running on battery...only one battery is used at a time.
Since the batteries charge when turned off, have you noticed if they will charge while the 'book is sleeping? If so, you may have a known problem. But before exploring that possibility, will one battery charge while the 'book is running? If not, then possibly you have a weak power adapter or even the wrong power adapter. If the power adapter is undersized or weak, then the power manager will first provide power to run the 'book and the battery will not charge.
The Wallstreet uses a 45 watt adapter; the adapters from the PB1400, 3400, any G3, and clamshell iBook are interchangeable. Some have used the Powerbook (Duo) 36 watt adpater but I do not believe it will charge the Wallstreet's battery when running.
I would first reset the power manager to cover all bases, and you can address the earlier questions I posed.

  • Powerbook charger - Easy Question

    Hi everyone,
I am going to buy a powerbook from America and Im in the UK so will i need 3 pin to 2 pin adaptor or does the charger itself change from 120v to 240v if i put a 3 pin head on the charger?
    Thanks
    Danny

The adaptor that comes with the PB is the same around the world. It is compatable with both the US 110V and the other 240V power sources around the world. The world power adaptor kit will have the plug to adapt your adaptor to the UK. If you travel around alought to other places than this is a good investment for your PB.

  • Is my laptop charger broken or is there something wrong with my laptop (ideapad U410)?

I've had my ideaPad U410 for about a year and a few months (august 2012) and it has been fine. Recently, whenever I plug in my charger in the bottom right notification tray, it doesn't show that my laptop is charging. I tried multiple times and it doesn't work. Is there something wrong? What should I do?
Where can I get a replacement if it is indeed my charger that is broken?
    Thank you

If you can run the laptop on the battery alone then it is more than likely still being charged by the charger when the machine is plugged in.  If you know someone with a voltmeter you could have them check to be sure that the charger is outputing the correct voltage.
If the battery is still being charged, what I would do is uninstall and reinstall the Lenovo Power Management software.  That should correct the icon probem you are experiencing.  The Power Management software can be downloaded from Lenovo's download page at the link below........

  • Lenovo t530 charger broken please help me

Ok so I'm currently studying abroad and the other day the power cord ripped by the plug and now the wires are exposed. Wrapping it in electrical tape did nothing and now I'm stuck here without a computer to do work on as every time I plug it into an outlet it shuts the circuit breaker down for the whole house. What do I do because the only thing I can think of is buy a new charger which will run me 60 dollars for some reason on lenovos website. please help

    Hi,
do you mean the power cord from the wall outlet to the charger itself? If yes, just purchase this cable, this is standard power cable for your country, costs several bucks.

  • Macbook Pro charger broken still under warranty

My macbook pro charger has a little split. The charger in still in the warranty period but I don't have the receipt. Just wondering will Apple replace my charger?

    Check you warranty status here:

If the warranty is in effect, I should think the charger would be coverrd if the problem is not caused by abuse.

  • Macbook pro charger broken in China, warranty?

Says it all in the question, meanwhile I have had my Macbook Pro for nearly 4 months and the charger is on it's way out. I was wondering if it may still be covered by the manufacturers warranty? The main problem is that I'm currently in China for the longterm and was bought in the UK. Is it possible to get it exchanged here?
    Thank you,
    Chris

I don't see how I'm going to prove that it's within the warranty period, surely they will be able to check at the store you would think?
