Preview - Old (?) problem resolved?

Hi there,
I just got down to install a juvenile Maverick on my MacPro and MacBook, via USB install-from-scratch. All is working perfectly fine, except Preview. I read a lot about this issue in the forum here, but wonder if a genuine fix has been found. Specifically, while I can view without problems PDFs and such, for JPGs and PNGs Preview tries to open them, starting the transition to the actual full image, then gives me a "Preview quit unexpectedly" message. I post the error report below.
Now, what I realized is that, once in Finder, the "space-key" QuickView has related issues (for image files): It opens an image, but after a brief moment it says that the image file size is 0 kByte. That is strange, as just before that happens, the image is correctly quick-viewed and the correct size is displayed. Something most go wrong on the way. That might explain Preview's behaviour, namely that it actually starts the transition with the correct image, but before it arrives to display it fully it crashes. Seems like it is removed from memory after successful loading or so, but that's just a speculation (doing a bit programming myself) which I should not do.
Anyway, it is pretty bad, as I use Preview a lot for base-image cropping, editing and conversion. I don't wanna open Photoshop all the time to crop a little icon here and there. My question is, did I miss the fix to that issue, or is it still pressing? I saw several solutions here in the forum, but none actually worked. Strangely enough, on my MacBook the Preview is just working fine, with the same apps installed (literally a mirror installation).
If anyone has a fix, please let me know. I very much appreciate!
Cheers
-Starbuck-

  • WRT54GS New Firmware Old Problems

Hi , I have a WRT54GS v.5 and updated the firmware from its original v1.52.0 to the latest v1.52.2 last week. Since then, the router hangs after 2 days in mixed mode. I first thought it was skype, with all the recent problems, but it wasn't. Eventually, its all access. A search on this problem suggests this is an old problem, resolved a year ago in prior firmware releases. Now I'm wondering if somehow this fix was forgotten in v1.52.2. The kids PSP's dont work set to G, so I have to go back and forth. Before I roll back this firmware upgrade, is anyone else experiencing this problem since installing v1.52.2? Scott

Help...I had this resolved for months....I cant get by a day without my GS going offline. I don't want to buy another $35 Netgear that has so far, run for 6 months....This is frustrating. This router is back to doing the same thing it did when I first bought it...For a while, setting to Wireless G had this resolved...Now its a show stopper, because I switched to Skype for my home phone... I put the router back to factory settings, and rebuilt from scratch with latest firmware. Every 5-6 hours, off the internet it goes. Wireless and LAN ports. My Comcast provided WEBSTAR modem detects a link, and the access lights are going crazy, but can't make anything out of them. I'm wondering if.... Has anyone seen an ISP disable devices running p2p apps? In this case, Comcast wold detect Skype, direct competition to digital voice, and kick my network off. Just guessing here. Please help me...

  • Old Problem/New Problem: Lightroom can't find file, then finds, but won't edit it.

    (Lightroom 2; Macintosh G5; OS X (10.4.11))
First, the old problem which, though unresolved, is here mostly for background:
    A little over a month ago, I posted a question (at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/480423?tstart=0 ).
The short version of that problem is that certain previously accessible images were not able to be opened in Lighroom. The preview image appeared in the main window accompanied by this message across the top of it:
"The file named "[name of image/file]" is offline or missing."
When I right clicked on the image and selected "Show in finder" I got this message:
"The photo '[name of file]' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Below which was shown the original path to the file. In the middle of that path, one or more folders appeared with colons in their names in place of the slashes originally part of the names (some folders have dates in their names). Following the path via the Finder, the file was exactly where it was supposed to be, although, of course, slashes appeared instead of the colons that were in the Lightroom summary of the original path, but Lightroom couldn't find them.
I was convinced that Lightroom was renaming the folders (but only in its interface; the original folders had correct names in the finder -- which is the only way they could have been named, since colons are illegal characters and won't be accepted as part of a file name). But I see now that there is some weird thing going on in the Finder itself. Even though I see the correct name on a folder when I search for it, or navigate through the hierarchy, if I click on the file at the end of that hierarchy (the file that Lightroom said it couldn't find) and ask for file info (via Command - I, or other method), the path to that file shows colons where slashes should be, but only in the names of the folders that were so named in Lightroom. All other folders with slashes in their names are listed correctly. So it's a Finder problem. Though this is still a mystery, I have been able to work around the problem. But how is this happening? (Note that I will be reformulating the question and posting it on the Apple discussion groups soon; I don't expect this forum to deal with Apple system issues. Just thought that others here may have had the same problem.)
Now, the new problem, possibly related to the old one:
In the same collection where I noted the previous problem, I selected an image that I wanted to print. The preview came up with this message:
"The file could not be found."
But when I right click on the image and select "Show in finder" it opens the correct Finder window with the file in question highlighted. The file, a TIFF, opens normally in Preview or Photoshop.
So why does Lightroom think it's not there? (even though it can show me exactly where it is)
I have edited this photo in Lightroom before. I have printed it from Lightroom before (as shown in the Lightroom history). But today it can't be edited, won't print and "could not be found"!!!
I know I can print from Photoshop, or re-import this photo into Lightroom (along with any others that Lightroom "can't find"), though both would require time and re-editing the original. I would rather understand (if that's possible) why this is happening in the first place, so hopefully I can avoid such wackiness in the future.
I realize that may have to burn some sage and hire a Shaman, but any ideas that won't smoke up the house or scare the cats would be most welcome.
    Thanks for reading.
    Leonard B.

If you have an old goat around that's not doing so well, consider the sacrifice.
The one thing that occurs to me besides the Gremlin, is the use of colons or slashes or some other character that the OS or LR doesn't like in some file name or other.  I think you'd have to change same in Finder, then show LR where the images are.

  • TS2998 Same old problem, Apple vs. Cox

Same old problem with Mountain Lion using Cox server. Can receive email in MAC MAIL but not connect to send. Fix?
All settings are per Cox support information.

Please help with sorting out the issues with the Cox email services?   Sorry; I'm just not that powerful.
If you're set up per the published specs (and those aren't easy to find), then Cox (mail or doc or the Cox network) is probably broken.  What's posted at various of the Cox support sites indicates that the SMTP send path is either TCP 587 with SSL/TLS enabled or TCP port 465 with SSL/TLS enabled.  Cox does appear to use different SMTP mail servers, depending on your service class and your particular geographic location.  Cox also appears to use POP and not IMAP, and specifically uses POP3 Port 995 on pop.cox.net; that's the SSL/TLS port for POP3.
What to do?  Work with someone that you can share your credentials with, verify the error, and (if it can't be resolved) contact Cox and work through this error with them.
Or as an alternative, don't use Cox for your mail.  I deliberately chose a mail hosting provider, and not the ISP I work with, for mail services.  That mail hosting move was easily very affordable, and the mail provider quickly answers the (few) support tickets I've needed very promptly.   In other words, the ISP deals with the network wiring, and the mail hosting provider deals with the mail servers.  And mail works.
Or yes, you can use Google or another (free) mail provider, but - and with the providers of any of the free services in general - getting support when something goes weird is far from certain.

  • Bass problem resolved - Can no one advise me please

Has the new 80 gig Ipod had the previous bass distortion problem resolved ?
The old 60 gig model showed significant bass distortion (bass drum etc) on some tracks and was a known problem.
I am thinking of buying the new 80Gig tomorrow - or - the Creative model - -can anyone advise right away please /
    Thank you
    Brian

Check through the forum and use bass distortion as a search - you will then see some time ago that a problem did exist. It was due as far as I know to the change of the output whcih caused an overlaod on deep bass especially when the equaliser was used. Apple knew about this and eventually posted a hardware 'upgrade' - however I do not know if this cured the problem as I then bought the Sony A3000. I would like to get the new Ipod but not if this problem still exists.

  • New iPhone 4....same old problems

Hi folks, I'm one of the many disappointed iPhone4 customers and I hope you can help me out here. Yesterday I got my new iPhone4 and as I was expecting I have the common problems almost everybody else has: poor reception/lost of reception almost all the time. The previous iPhone 3G was working great but the new one is not. Mine came bundled with iOS 4.1. As I have read in this forums and many others there seem to be a bug in this version of the OS that causes poor reception and incorrect signal strength bars. I was wondering whether it possible to install the previous version of the OS, namely, iOS 4.0.5 (i guess that's the correct version number?) because I've heard that that particular version doesn't have this problem (I'm aware I will lose things like HDR but hey, I have a real camera for that so I don't care if the iPhone has or not HDR capabilities).
Is that possible? if so, how can I do it?
    thanks,

    Hi Malcolm,
You are reading reports from only the users who have problems. Users without problems don't >complain.
This is a weak argument. What should I do? read the complains of people whose devices work fine? I'm sorry but your answer to that sentence doesn't hold. Whenever you have problems with something you look for advice and comments of people that have the same problems. That's the way human problem solving works.
When the next version comes out you will see many people wanting to return to 4.1, which will
    have suddenly become perfect.
Again, this is a thin argument. As customers who pay a LOT of many for electronic devices we want things to be functional. So, with the release of a new driver/OS version we expect the old problems to go away and, yes, new problems will come along because that's just the way software development works. So, if iOS 4.1 was supposed to solve reception problems how does Apple explains that after releasing v4.1 those problems are still here? Many people have reception problems, just read the forums. Again, we don't just a fancy electronic device, we want a functional thing. It's like buying an expensive rolex watch that does everything except telling you the time. Or having a Ferrari with a broken engine.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll keep testing the iPhone and if it doesn't get better in a week I'm afraid I'm gonna have to return it and keep using the old 3G until reception problems with the iPhone 4 are solved.

  • Old Problem of Hanging returned

Back in March I couldn't get Premiere Pro to launch and it would always hang on the splash screen.  I haven't had to cut anything in 6 months but now I have a pressing job to do and I try to launch PP.  Initially it won't let me open my last saved timeline
due to some codecs being missing.  It let me open a different old timeline, but the one I wanted was not opening no matter what I tried.  I shut down and tried to re-open and now it's back to the same old problem of hanging on the splash screen.
Trying to find a way to contact actual Adobe support is impossible, so I'm back here to start the frustrating process all over again.

Dear Users! this is a user-to-user forum. You can not contact Nokia support team via this forum and there are only few Nokia staff in these forums (Not the support team).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about your problem, it just seems to me your phone's keypad is worn off because of usage... but that might not be your case, please wait until you get a reply from another user or just take it to Nokia Care Point.

Here we go again. Same old problem with FF updates. FF9.x.x will not allow clickable internet links. They are dead when typed. ALL IE versions have clickable links BUILT IN! Why can't you do it??? Don't blame it on "third party add on incompatiblity." It's not their fault. It is YOUR fault for not including it. Do not blame users either.
xpi files are not compatible with FF9.x.x even when dragged on to it

'''''Linkification''''' was not developed by Mozilla.
*The third party developer appears to have abandoned the Add-on (no longer updates it).
*The last update available on the Mozilla Firefox Add-ons site ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linkification/ ) was made compatible only through Firefox 3.6.x
*The developer posted version 1.3.9 on his/her own site which was made compatible through Firefox 4

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.

  • Avoiding preview stuttering problems

I am creating a new post here as I marked the last one I posted on this subject as answered.
In that post I asked would a new graphics card help to eliminate the severe stuttering caused by my windows xp machine (2 intel P4 processors 3.2) failing to decompress the MP4 files from my Sony NEX-5 quickly enough? The answer was an unequivocal NO as it was the processors, not the card.
Since then I have been doing some experimentation:
I downloaded trial versions of Cyberlink Power Director and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. The latter stuttered worse than PE but the Cyberlink app had almost faultless previews - no stuttering. Unfortunately it is a pretty horrible programme otherwise, and any case I am used to Premiere having use an early version of PP for years, so I experimented some more:
In PE I created a project with a project setting of PAL-AVCHD-HD 1081i25, loaded some MP4 clips taken with theNEX 5 on the MP4 1440 x 1080 setting and then burnt the project to DVD.
I then saved the movie as an AVI, removed the original MP4 clips and imported the AVI file I had just made. The project asked me if I wanted to change the project settings to match the clip and and I said yes. I then burned this to a DVD.
I then deleted the AVI clip and imported the original MP4 clips (into what is now effectively a PAL-DV-Widescreen 48KHz project setting I imagine). This time I was not asked if I wanted to change the settings but a red line appeared above the clips indicating they needed rendering. I rendered them and  - voila! No stuttering - perfectly smooth preview of the MP4 clips. I then burned this to DVD.
Next I compared the DVDs on a Sony 42inch HD TV. No difference! All three of very good quality, at least to my eyes..
So what is happening here? When I rendered the clips in the PAL DV project was it turning them into  AVI files because of the project settings? And is it that the first DVD (with the MP4 clips straight from the camera), which I would have expected to be of better quality than the other two, was not actually producing a HD DVD inspite of the camera and project setting?
Is the only way I am going to get true HD to set the camera to AVCHD and burn to Blu-Ray?
If any one has knowledge of these things I would love to hear from you as while I seem to have found an answer to the stuttering I would love to know what is going on and if I am fooling myself. Many thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have not explained myself very well.
There is no problem with the DVDs - whatever settings I use to edit, the DVDs play very well, smooth and reasonably high quality in my estimation..
And as far as I know there is no interlacing going on as I am not using the camera's highest avchd setting (which is interlaced), only the 1440x1080 MP4.
The problem is with the editing previews, which when I open an HD project and import my MP4 camera files is very jerky to the point of being almost unusable at times, with long waits during operations. A look in Window Task Manager shows both CPUs maxing out all the time. According to the reply I had from an earlier post, this is because my CPUs are not up to the job of decompressing the MP4 files on the fly.
What I have found is that if I import my MP4 files into a project with DV settings, I get a red line above the timeline. If I then render the clips, the editing improves dramatically - no stuttering at all and no long waits after mouse clicks or key presses and the CPUs only working at about 50%. Of course it can take a while to render a number of clips, but I can go and do something else while that is happening and when I return the editing goes like clockwork.
My question is - what is happening to the quality of the video? I cannot see any difference in output (DVDs) whatever project settings I use, they all seem equally good. So hopefully I have found an answer to the preview stuttering problem. But I suspect I am not getting real HD from any of them. To do this I imagine I need to set the camera to AVCHD rather than 1440x1080 MP4 and burn to Blu-ray. This I have not tried yet as I do not have a Blu-Ray burner.
My problem is my ignorance of what PE is doing to the MP4 files when it renders them. And why, if I set the project settings to HD 1080i25 instead of PAL DV and work directly on the unrendered MP4 clips (and put up with the stuttering) do I not see a visible increase in quality when I burn the DVD? Is there some sort of levelling going on during the DVD coding?

    Sorry my english!

Yes, I agree with you. If you thought I was not agreeing with you that shows you how bad my written english can be.
Ok actually having the prototypes as visuals are very helpful you should file a feature request.
    Here:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
And with your permission I will try to send your mock ups to someone who might possibly be able to do something with it. And there are one or two contributors to the forum who hopefully will see this and they might have some influence as well. But I agree there should be a rethinking about access to the panels and they should be accessible in at least some degree by way of the keyboard.
As far as the comments about your english n need to thank, it was all my pleasure.
I will try and you should as well you cannot attach your visual to the feature request but you can mention in the request that you have created such a visual. Adobe might actually be interested in seeing them.
But they are good solid suggestions.
The changing of the fonts in the way you suggest might actually work on the windows platform and if you have the text highlighted you the change is reflected on the canvas as you scroll. Long sort after request. There are however some Mac users who are opposed to this feature? It is not really clear why they are opposed.

  • "iMovie doesn't lock the audio to the video - it's an old, old problem"

Lot's of people have had problems keeping long video clips in sync with their audio in iMovie. I think what this guy says is correct:
    http://forums.mactalk.com.au/11/49711-imovie-hd-sound-out-sync.html#post608307
"iMovie doesn't lock the audio to the video - it's an old, old problem either you import in short segments so the sound doesn't get too far out of sync or you buy Final Cut Express - it does lock the audio to the video".
...and unfortunately I don't know of a way to import in small sections if you've recorded say 4 minutes worth of continuous footage.
(Come on Jobs get it together!)

You can replace your internal DVD drive, or get an external DVD drive.
Note: If your Mac had an internal drive, the Apple external USB DVD drive won't work with it. It's designed to be used only with Macs that don't have internal DVD drives, i.e., MacBook Airs, MacMinis, etc.

  • Problems resolving .local DNS names

Hi all - I was having problems resolving machine.local type names, and I found this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107800
This solution helped, but not completely.
I am on a Mac mini running 10.4.8PPC.
This unit is on a private IP network - 192.168.254.0/255.255.255.0
This unit is staticly addressed - 192.168.254.31
The network has a Windows Server 2003 machine doing DNS/DHCP
The network has a domain of mynetwork.local
I was experiencing the issue in this article:
dig server.mynetwork.local would complete and resolve to 192.168.254.11
ping server.mynetwork.local would fail to resolve.
Adding local to the search domain solved this issue as described in the article.
    However, a new wrinkle arises.
I frequently connect to other networks via PPTP, many running SBS 2003, which uses a company.local DNS scheme.
Once connected, I can dig company.local names, but not mynetwork.local names (which I expected - as I am now resolving names through server.company.local). However, I can't ping company.local names, which prevents connection to the server.company.local OWA server, for example.
    Any thoughts? I tried putting
    mynetwork.local, company.local
in the search domains field, but no joy...
Thanks for wading through this long question - appreciate any replies...

    Playing Dr. Watson here...
Are those other Networks Local but not on the 192.168.254.x subnet?

Have new MC544LL/A and same old problem"The ipod cannot be synced. A duplicate filename was specified."Is this a "apple or Itune" problem?

I fought this problem for WEEKS with no success.  iTunes on Windows 7 x64.  I tried running it as Administrator.  I tried every fix I could find here and on Youtube and nothing.  Any time I was in iTunes and switched focus to another Window like Outlook or something it would pop this error message up again.  I reinstalled iTunes from scratch.  This did NOT fix it, but it gave me a clue.  I figured it had to be my iTunes library which is stored on an external HD.
After poking around in the library for a while I thought it might be a file that had been set to Read Only so I did an "attrib -r e:\itunes /s"  to clear all of them all.  This wasn't the problem but it alerted me to a file it couldn't clear.  The file was iT.tmp and it couln't clear that because the file was corrupt.  I deleted it but that still didn't fix it.
I finally did a "chkdsk e:\itunes /f" and let it run through.  It found the error in iT.tmp, fixed it and now iTunes works fine again.
