Primary PCI-E slot NOT functioning, Secondary does ? ? ? ?

....have & been running this MB:  MSI K8N Diamond Plus = SLi  w/2x_Nvidia G-Force7800GTX{512mb}..........came to turn on this morning and NO BOOT after post????? . . . . . .  have troubleshoot down as far as remove'd both VGA's and start'd with only one.........come to find out either card DOES work & boot's system up,  BUT ,  ONLY in the /Secondary PCI-E slot? !? !  This does not matter which card,  or even selecting in the BIOS of which slot first, ( aka: PCI-E1 > PCI-E2 / or / PCI-E2 > PCI-E2 ),  for it's bootable order...... SEEM's to be the Primary PCI-E slot, (closest to CPU),  is none functioning / reading any kind of video card install'd into? ! ? ! ? . . . . . wondering if anyone could shed anyony other help / suggestion's / comment's pertaining to this or any other idea's of which i may have NOT checked or try,  to troubleshoot .........  thnx in advance

Hi Charles
Just wondering how you got on with the replacement? Did MSI give any details as to what might have happened or was wrong?
I'm having a similiar issue myself.  My MSI K8N SLI-F board seems to now have a 'tempremental" primary PCI-E slot.  I have a 9800GT card that was working fine for months and then I got no video on reboot after trying to get dual displays up and running.  After much troubleshooting and RMA'ing my 9800GT card I think it must be the slot on the Mainboard itself.  My 6800GS which has a light fan on it compared to the massive glaciator on my 9800GT is working fine but whenever I put the 9800GT (original or replacement) in I get no video on boot but I can hear the computer and HD making all its normal noises and know its getting to the windows login screen.  The 9800GT fan spins up then turns off or sometimes stays spinning.  Both cards work fine in another machine.  After cleaning out the slot and screwing in the card nice and hard it went again and ran all day but after shutting down and leaving it overnight, I got no video on boot again.  My guess is the cooling of the card overnight made it move slightly.  I have repeated the reseating steps and have it going again.  I can only presume the slot itself is now loose or the solder on it is failing or something, or could it be the Power Supply?....  has me stumped.  When the card isn't in just right and I get no video I also get both optical drives ticking / seeking like there looking for a disc about 10 times then the computer kinda internally restarts and it goes again with no video still.  When I have the card screwed in tight like now it doesn't happen.  With the card screwed in like now I pushed the card a little and then turned it on and again I get no video.  Reseat, rescrew and it goes again.... weird.   Any suggestions?  PCI-voltage?  PSU Maybe?  the slot?  something else?
Anyway I don't think I can actually try the 2nd slot as the MSI K8N SLI-FI/ F site says:
Two PCI Express x16 slot (supports PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant)
Normal mode Primary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 16
Secondary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 1
SLI mode Primary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 8
Secondary PCI-E slot is compatible with PCI Express x 8
So I presume I can't get full 16x out of the 2nd slot and looking at it, it only has the gold pins going half way down the slot where as the primary slot has them right to the end.
MSI K8N SLI-F  //  2 x 1gb PQI RAM  // AMD X2 4400+ (939)
Silverstone OP650w PSU  // 2 x Optical drives  // 1 x 320gb Seagate SATA drive
Asus 9800GT  //   PCI:  Soundblaster Audigy  // LeadTek WinFast Deluxe TVCard

  • [MSI-K8N-SLI-FI] Primary PCI-Express slot dead ?

    Hi,
Early this year with 8800GT plugged in the primary PCI-Express slot would fail to output the video, so I had to revert to my old 6600GT and it worked fine till now that is. I had verified my 8800 GT on different system and it booted just fine.
Now all of a sudden even 6600GT failed to output the video. So, I tried another slot (courtesy SLI) and the system works fine.
Issue: PCI Express width is shown as x1 instead of x8/16 ?
Is there a way to repair the first slot or force x8 on second slot.
    regards,
    Prashant

Is the MB chipset fan running OK or is it slow or stopped? Any problems with other things controlled by the chipset?
Yes, chipset fan seems to be running just fine, will have to check the speed though. USB ports are working fine. What else should I check ?

  • PhotoSmart C309a wireless radio is not functioning. Does anyone know why that my be?

My printer used to work using my wireless network.  It failed to print and a diagnostic told me the wireless radio was not working.  Does anyone know why?

    Hello,
"Wireless Radio Not functioning" usually indicates an issue with the wireless card in the Printer.
    Please try below steps ..
While the Printer is ON, unplug the Power Cord from back of the Printer.
Wait for 30 seconds and then Plug in the Power Cord to the printer.
While the printer is displaying the home screen,.
Select Setup > Network > Wireless Radio : ON
on Printer display, Select Setup > Network > Print Network Configuration . Check if the printed diagnostic pages still displays " Wireless Radio Not Functioning" ? if Yes, Your Printer requires a SERVICE, hence  Please call HP Support ( US ) 1-800-474-6836 .

  • HELP!!!!! 915GM Speedster-FA4 PCIe x1 slot not working - SORTED

Hi, I am at my whit’s end with this motherboard, I cannot get the PCIe x1 slot to work. When I use the PCIe x16 slot it recognises the option card OK but the x1 slot will just not see it.
I know the network socket 1 needs to active for the PCIe x1 slot to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • P7N Diamond, put a single GPU in either blue PCI-E slot?

I thought I had seen that when running only one graphics card, you were supposed to use the top pcie slot, or you would get better performance from doing so, but I can find no mention of that now.  I notice that I can get better airflow moving my 8800GT down to the lower blue slot.  Is there any reason not to do that?

    Quote from: Jack t.N. on 15-November-09, 08:48:11
On some boards (P45 Platinum for example) using the secondary PCIE-Slot will result in reduced bandwith (x8 instead of x16).  That is the main reason.  On other system configurations, the second PCI-E Slot is only for SLI Mode and putting the single video card in the secondary slot will make the system halt when it is trying to initialize the video adapter. These are the reasons why on those systems it is recommened to use the primary PCI-E Slot.
In your case everything looks fine.  There is no issue here.
    Cool thanks

Try removing the hard disk and then starting up the PC. That way we can isolate the issue. If you make it to the BIOS screen then you hard drive might be faulty, not your motherboard

I examined the PCI-e slot closely again and saw these 3 solder points which don't look right could this be whats causing the problem?

Is it ok if i connect my single GPU (6800gt) to the second PCI-e x16 slot and leave the primary slot empty? if yes then do i have to change the position of the switch between the two slots so as to enable the second slot??
why would you want to do that? it should work, but the recommended setting is to use the primary slot first (the one closest to the CPU).

  • K9AGM3-F does not boot with PCIe 4x device in PCIe 16x slot

K9AGM3-F motherboard does not boot with PCIe 4x Intel PRO/1000 PT dual port network interface card installed into PCIe 16x slot on motherboard. The boot process stops in BIOS screens. The motherboard works flawlessly without this NIC. K9VGM-V + Intel PRO/1000 PT boot successfully. I tried three K9AGM3-F motherboards and two Intel PRO/1000 PT NICs in different combinations, the results are always the same. It appears to be some kind of BIOS problem.

Minor point, probably irrelevant: I said you install the driver f i r s t. Then you put the physical card in.
The driver is completely irrelevant because the driver is a part of operating system, but as I already wrote before the boot process stops long before the OS start.
Quote from: Fredrik Åsenius on 09-April-08, 22:52:27
    No stability issues otherwise?
PSU is always good to know.
The PSU is irrelevant too because the same NICs work in the PCIe 1x slot of the same motherboard with the same PSU.

My primary keyboard is English UK and secondary one Spanish. Until now when switching keyboards languages the spell check would automatically change to the desired language. Somehow it does not happen anymore. Any ideas on how to fix this?

The keyboard doesn't normally play any role in Apple apps regarding spellcheck.  That  is determined by system prefs/keyboard/text/spelling.  Go the setup item at the bottom of the list and make sure that British English and Spanish are the only two boxes checked, and then set it to Automatic.  How well it works varies a lot.  You may also need to check Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar.
If you are still using Pages 4, spellcheck is determined by Inspector > Text > More > Language.  Make sure that is set to the right thing for what you want to do.

  • ACS database not functioning after changing secondary acs ip.

Hi.. im having 2 ACS 3.1 server. ACS01 (Primary) & ACS02 (Secondary). Recently we have moved ACS02 to another site and changed its ip address.
When we do database replication from ACS01, we received error message saying that ACS02 has denied replication request.
Any idea whats may be the problem ?

Consider these points when you implement the Cisco Secure database replication feature:
    1) ACS only supports database replication to other ACS servers. All ACS servers that participate in Cisco Secure database replication must run the same version and patch level of ACS.
2)The primary server transmits the compressed, encrypted copy of its database components to the secondary server. This transmission occurs over a TCP connection, with port 2000. The TCP session is authenticated and uses an encrypted, Cisco-proprietary protocol.
3)Only suitably configured, valid ACS hosts can be secondary servers. To add a secondary server, configure it in the AAA Servers table in the Network Configuration section of this document. When a server is added to the AAA Servers table, the server appears for selection as a secondary server in the AAA Servers list under Replication Partners, on the Cisco Secure database replication page.
4)The primary server must be configured as an AAA server and must have a key. The secondary server must have the primary server configured as an AAA server and its key for the primary server must match the primary servers own key.
5)Replication to secondary servers takes place sequentially in the order listed in the Replication list under Replication Partners, on the Cisco Secure database replication page. 6)The secondary server, which receives the replicated components, must be configured to accept database replication from the primary server. To configure a secondary server for database replication, refer to the Configuring a Secondary Cisco Secure ACS Server section of this document.
7)ACS does not support bi-directional database replication. The secondary server, which receives the replicated components, verifies that the primary server is not on its Replication list. If not, the secondary server accepts the replicated components. If so, it rejects the components.
8)To replicate user-defined RADIUS vendor and vendor-specific attribute (VSA) configurations successfully, the definitions to be replicated must be identical on the primary and secondary servers. This includes the RADIUS vendor slots the user-defined RADIUS vendors occupy. For more information about user-defined RADIUS vendors and VSAs, refer to the User-Defined RADIUS Vendors and VSA Sets section of the document Cisco Secure ACS Command-Line Database Utility.

  • PCI-E slot possibly not working (P67A-GD53)

    Hello all,
New guy here. New MSI customer and everything.
I just built a new PC today with a MSI P67A-GD53. I first plugged in the VGA (a MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti OC Twin FrozR II) to the top PCI-E slot.
On boot, I get what I think is a VGA problem beep code (1 long - 3 short beeps). This happened with 2 different VGAs. I also tried my old XFX 8800 GT.
The computer boots fine when I plug in the MSI VGA to the second (bottom) PCI-E slot.
Does this mean that the top slot is broken? I guess I could try the 8800 at the same time to see if it works when 2 VGAs are plugged in, but I suspect it wont. Should I get the motherboard replaced? I am considering not getting it replaced now since I ordered it from the UK and I live in Cyprus and replacement could take a month to complete (posting overseas). Would that be a bad idea? I fear that if one part of the motherboard is faulty, it could potentially have other problems as well.

are you sure you got the stand offs right under the board
I might have missed a hole, but I definitely didn't leave any old stand-offs that might short the board from underneath.
I'll recheck and add any missing and get back to you.

  • Localized brush tool does not function in 2.1

    Greetings All,
This may have been discussed previously, but I have just registered on the Forum, and I opted not to search every topic.
The Adjustment Brush in version 2.1 still does not function properly on my computer. I cannot see the mask, and the tool takes forever to register a change. For example, I will try to paint in an adjustment--nothing will happen, and I try something else. Several minutes later, the first adjustment may register. This extremely long delay--and not all the adjustments I attempt even register with the system--makes it all but impossible to use.
I love Lightroom. The adjustment brush would be a great feature--it's probably the single reason why I upgraded to 2.0. However, the bugs have still not been fixed.
FYI, my computer runs XP on dual 3.19GHz processors with 4 Gigs of RAM.
    Hoping Adobe will fix this,
    Jim

    Richard,
Thanks for the "O" tip. It makes the mask visible. Unfortunately it still does not make the tool work correctly. Maybe with the next update . . .
    Jim
    Chris,
Thanks for the tip on the nvidia cards. Unfortunately, I do not have an nvidia card. I actually tried to upgrade to an nvidia card. Called them, called Dell. Everybody said it would work. Card arrives and it's twice the size of the available slot. Ah well . . .

  • Secondary/Tertiary port not function

I have done a clean install on the sound card twice, and i formatted windows 2 days ago. The sound card has always worked great, but this is my first time on using it's 4/4. setting, or higher. It only exports sound to the primary(2 speaker) slot....but the others will not operate. I have tried everything i can think of, even 3rd party software....
It's driving me insane, I just want it to WORK.. heh
I know it's not the amp, and it's not the speakers, because I ran headphone jacks to both ports, and yet again, only the primary slot exported sound. I have triple checked all of my settings through the console, and it fails all the same. I have also searched this forum, and found nothing that resembles my issue to a plausable extent.
Please, if anyone has any ideas, don't hesitate to post real fast.
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Barry

"They know about this problem but they will not fix it."
    *sigh*
Sounds all too familiar. Same thing goes for graphics cards... and even video games. These guys rake in millions of dollars, but dont spend any on hiring a PR person that does technical work behind the scenes.
Well, for all I know, I could have fried it somehow. I know it sounds odd... frying only certain parts of a chip... but I overclocked my graphics card a year ago, and fried it's directx capabilities... Now it puts these really wierd streaks from 3D rendered models up to the sky. So technically, it could be ANYTHING.. =(
And to respond to the preceeding, it's a SoundsBlaster Audigy2 ZS. Never had any problems, and I've used the 4.+ ports before. All worked great, then. And I cant confirm that it's the driver, because I have used multiple ones, even from 3rd parties. That would lead me to believe that it's either O/S or Hardware.
Anyone have any further notes? I'm stuck here, and I would prefer not to have to buy another =P
