Problems configuring my QUAD ethernet card (Quad FastEthernet PCI)

Hi I installed this Network card in my UltraSparc 10:
X1034A 501-5406 Quad FastEthernet PCI (QFE/P)
Now I figured out how I can install the 4 interfaces...
I use this command:
# ifconfig qfe0 plumb
# ifconfig qfe0 10.0.0.202 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# ifconfig -a
# ifconfig qfe1 plumb
# ifconfig qfe1 10.0.0.203 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# ifconfig -a
# ifconfig qfe2 plumb
# ifconfig qfe2 10.0.0.204 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# ifconfig -a
# ifconfig qfe3 plumb
# ifconfig qfe3 10.0.0.205 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
# ifconfig -aAnd I made these files in the /etc folder:
hostname.qfe0
hostname.qfe1
hostname.qfe2
hostname.qfe3In those files I put my hostname in.
When I reboot my UltraSparc 10 and issu this command "ifconfig -a":
# ifconfig -a
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232 index 1
        inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
hme0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
        inet 10.0.0.201 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255

        inet 10.0.0.201 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255
ether 8:0:20:a1:ff:9f If you take a good look you will see that the interfaces are seen by my UltraSparc...
BUT the IP addresses are the same as teh "hme0" interface.
And the MAC addresses are also the same...
Can somebody help me with this problem?
Thanks,
I-1

Hi,
I think my problem is solved.
IP addresses are different now:

CAN SOMEONE MAYBE TELL ME WHY MY MAC ADRESSES ARE THE SAME?
AND HOW DO I CHANGE THIS?

After upgrading the system to Solaris 11.1 the system simply got stuck during boot:
    svc:/system/filesystem/root:default
Method or service timed out. Killing contract 12.
Method "/lib/svc/method/fs-root" failed due to signal KILL
The system never reached a vaild state (only maintenance login without a regular filesystem).
After removing the Quad FastEthernet card and booting Solaris 11.1 the system came up and worked fine.
Any ideas? It must be a bug in 11.1. How can we process this issue to Oracle?
    Thanks, Kai

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)
I have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.

  • Installing new hardware (quad Fast Ethernet cards)

I'm trying to install 3 new quad ethernet cards into my Sparc E220 server. They are a supported device however they are not showing up under the /dev directory. However, they do show up if I run the ifconfig -a command. Thanks in advance for any information.

If they show up when you run 'ifconfig -a', then it sounds like everything is working. Are you having some sort of problem?

  • Configure Network (Ethernet Cards) interfaces doubts.

    Hi All,
I m beginner in Solaris/Unix, and I have same problems in configure my network.
I have one machine with 2 Ethernet Cards, this machine has multiboot, than it have Solaris 10 and Windows XP.
I will show the configuration that I have on Window,I need the same configuration in Solaris:
    In eth0:
IP: 192.168.0.117 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is IP, OK?)
Mask: 255.255.255.0 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is
    netmaks , OK?)
Gatway: 192.168.0.254 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig broadcast, OK?)
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.254 (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
Secondary DNS: void (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
I Have an DHCP Server in 192.168.0.254, than I can use dhcp.
The problems, When I try use DHCP:
    Ifconfg eth0 DHCP
This command delay and return an Error.
    If Itry configure manually, like
    Ifconfg eth0 192.168.0.117 (this OK)
Ifconfg eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0 (this OK)
Ifconfg eth0 broadcast 192.168.0.254 (here the 254 is changed to 255 that is broadcast default, but in my net broad cast or router is in 254)
Other thing how I save this configuration. When I restart I lost all changes
Well in second interface the problem is same, but I didnt have DHCP:
IP: 200.44.136.145 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is IP, OK?)
Mask: 255.255.255.192 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is netmaks , OK?)
Gatway: 200.44.136.129 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig broadcast, OK?)
Primary DNS: 4.2.2.2 (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
Secondary DNS: void (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
    fconfg eth1 200.44.136.145 (here .44 is changed to 36)
    Any one can help-me please?
    Thanks

yes. you got it .... eg..
    /etc/hostname.le0
    /etc/hostname.le1
in here put the hostname ... so at the shell prompt:
    # hostname <cr>
    should give your hostname.
now, in the hosts file: eg:
    # Internet host table
    127.0.0.1     localhost
    <your ip address> <your hostname>     loghost
    129.156.89.252 host2
you need to reboot after this.
if you get a 'bad address' error on boot,
you probably have a mismatch of hostnames/ip addresses somewhere in their respective files.
    also, see:
    # man hosts
    # man ifconfig

  • Ethernet card - is it my problem

I am trying to put OS9 on a firewire drive and am a little rusty.
It boots fine but I am not on the internet. I have an ethernet card as the original one is nonfunctional. Is this a problem.
I am using a G4 Quicksilver which connects fine on X.
I am using a router on cable modem. I have DHCP checked on the TCP control panel and have not entered a DNS address.
    Any help appreciated.
    Lewis

    Hi, Lewis -
Okay, I see - you are trying to set up OS 9 to connect via etherent to the web, rather than trying to install OS 9 on a firewire drive.
Setting the "Configure via" mode to "Use DHCP Server" will result in blanks for the addresses (IP, subnet, and router), until the server can be contacted and supplies them; on mine the Client address remains blank at all times.
Apparently the blockage is in reaching the server.
Your QuickSilver's built-in ethernet port is auto-switching, and so when using that there is no need to be particular about whether you are using a Crossover or a Patch type cable to connect to the end device. However, if the new (added) ethernet card does not have an auto-switching port, and if the router does not, then it would make a difference.
If that is the case (neither has auto-switching ports), then if the router and modem are separate items you should use a Patch type cable. But, if they are the same piece of hardware, you would then need to use a Crossover type cable.
Article #42717 - Apple products that require an Ethernet Crossover cable
    Ethernet Cable: Color Coding Standard
    Other things -
AppleTalk can sometimes interfere with gaining a sucessful ethernet connection. In those cases, just turning AppleTalk off may not be sufficient - it can be quite tenacious about hanging onto a port. The solution for that is to set AppleTalk to use a different port. You can make that setting in the AppleTalk control panel.
Be sure that both the extensions named Shared Library Manager and Shared Library Manager PPC are enabled in Extensions Manager. Ditto all extensions whose names includes Open Transport or OpenTpt. If you need to enable anything, restart to make the change active.
Try throwing away the file ASLM Preferences (it can be found in the Preferences folder in System Folder). Empty the Trash, then restart. ("ASLM" = "Apple Shared Library Manager")

  • PCI Ethernet card problem.....please help!

Hi everyone, I intalled yesterday a PCI Ethernet card (10/100) on my PowerMac G5.
!0.5 immediately recogenize it and setted it with DHCP mode but internet looks to be slow so I chaged the configuration with static IP but with out any good result.
Internet works but very slooly while the network works great with (10/100 card and fine with integrated gigabit lan).
Someone could help me to understand while the PCI ethernet card doesn't work fine with internet? It's directly connected on a Netgear firewall routrer.....
    thanks to everyone

But it could be unsupported the second ethernet on a powermac g5?
No, the fact that it shows up is proof that it works.
What Speeds are you getting with it?...
    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Also, in System Preferences>Network>Show>Ethernet 2>Ethernet tab>Configue:>Manually, try setting the speed lower & Duplex to Half-Duplex, restart required, test that setting.

    Hello,
I have a problem. I don't see my network adapter settings. Ethernet cable is working, I test it another PC. But this pc is not see adapter settings. That ethernet card will be lost I think. I just ask; It's operating system's problem or it's hardware problem, I do not know. How I test it?

  • Xircom pcmcia ethernet card problem.

    Hi.
I have recently received an old Dell Latitude CPx laptop. i have added to it an old Xircom RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56 card.
after the installation, when booting, during the start-up of networking, i get the following message:
    SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
are there any known solutions to this problem?
or will i have to swap Ethernet cards?
    thank you in advance

    Hi,
A quick Google search indicates that 3Com XJAEM3336 Mac drivers were available for at least some PowerBook computers. However, it is unclear to me whether the files here are needed, appropriate or sufficient in your case. Perhaps you could look further into this.
If you cannot locate a suitable Ethernet PC Card with Mac drivers, another solution could possibly be to use a 16-bit wireless card (typically, 802.11b speed and WEP security). See, for example, this web page.

  • 2nd ethernet card problems

Hi all, I have an G4 MDD that I'm running 10.4 server and am trying to add a 2nd ethernet card to no avail. I tried adding a Dlink and then tried a Linksys card. Upon restarting from installing the drivers, both times I got a message stating that the install was not installed properly, and therefore the mac was not reading the card. Has anyone had this issue or any ideas. I am at a complete loss. Thanks.

There was an update to PCI ethernet controllers on
    www.xlr8yourmac.com yesterday.
Were there drivers? did you repair permissions? did it complain that the extension or startupitem needed to be 'fixed?'
When adding or removing a PCI card, I have never seen or had the need to reset PMU. but I have and do need to reset nvram and insure nvram is current and the device tree is rebuilt.
I've also read of complaints about D-Link, mostly routers lately.

  • Configuring RTL8019 Ethernet Card

I'm installing Solaris 8 for PC and would like to use my RTL8019 Chip based Ethernet Card. However it seems that solaris do not support it. I can config thet ethernet card as NE2000 Compatible, but this model is also not supported.
Is it possibkle that solaris for intel doesn't support these ethernet card ? is there someone that has a driver for it ?
    Thanks

    Hi Karim,
You check the intel solaris 8 hardware compatibility list with your NIC card.

    Thanks.
    revert back.

  • Ifconfig nxge2 external ethernet card on global zone

    Hello,
I'm trying to configure a NIC on an external quad ethernet card on the global zone. I can ifconfig the NIC, but it doesn't show RUNNING.
However, I was able to configure nxge1 as an exclusive-ip to a local zone.
Is there a special setup for external ethernet cards on the global zone?

  • My Cable Company says my Ethernet Card is Dead

Hi, after a lightning storm my High Speed Internet connection stopped working. The Cable company says my Ethernet Card is dead. But my understanding of my G4 Power Mac architecture is that it has built in 10BaseT support and there is no separate card. If true, might I still have a burned out driver for the Ethernet plug on the back of the computer? Alternately, might lack of Ethernet be caused by corrupted software which could be fixed by re-intalling?

If you dont already have one, get a utility like macTCPing.
Are you also using a router, or are you direct connected to the cable modem?
Are your modem lights flashing slow (1/sec) or fast?
at 1 per second or less, then the modem is not talking to the cable company.
Are you getting a connection light on the modem indicating a valid signal from the Mac?
Reset your modem. (Remove from power, wait a few minutes, reconnect) There may also be a reset button on it.
    ping 127.0.0.1
    If that succeeds
    you have passed local loopback.
    check your IP configuration.
    ping your own IP address.
if it works, then your ethernet port is probably OK.
if it fails, release and renew your ip address, and try again.
    if that works,
ping the modem or your gateway address
if this fails, then reset the modem and try again.
if it fails, the modem is likely the problem
    If it works
    ping any web site.
if it works, you are set.
if it fails, then ping the name servers for your ISP.
if those fail, then there is an issue with the ISP and its NS, which is beyond your control.
They are hard to find, but there were a couple of companys that made PCI ethernet cards for Mac.

  • Ethernet card - work in install, not after

    Hello guys,
I'm trying to set up a server on a Compaq Deskpro EN Series SSF (PII 400). I've install ArchLinux the FTP way and it have worked well. But afer the second reboot, total network blackout. I tried to load the module of my ethernet card by rc.conf, no changes. I think it may be a matter of module option. But I don't know what option might be good.
If there is a way to see how the install script of ArchLinux configures the ethernet card (by the automatic way) this problem might be solved quickly.
The key question here is : Why does it work during the installation, but not after the second reboot.
P.S. : I had the same problem with Mandrake with the same computer.

Nobody ever reads the "about" page, eh?
ArchLinux does nothing automatically - it hides details... it's also for the experienced linux user.
    You need to know
    a) the correct module for your network card
    b) how to configure a network
after that, a quick glance at /etc/rc.conf should make it apparent how to do it.
    again: arch does nothing automatically

  • Ethernet card stopped working after a bad blackout.

    Hi everybody,
we had a bad blackout yesterday night, with a terrible peak of electricity before that. When I turned my mac mini on again, it would not see any more the ethernet card.
In the system preferences it did not appear any more, and when asking for "Network Port Configurations" the Integrated Ethernet appeared grayed out. From the command line i then tried "ifconfig en0" and the answer is: "ifconfig: interface en0 does not exist".
I removed the interface, with the intention of adding it back again, and the only possibility that comes up in the menu (besides bluetooth and airport) is a "6 to 4" interface (which I have no idea what it is). Tried that, but it didn't seem the right thing to do...
I then switched off the computer and started it with the self test disk. The disk did not report any problem at all, however the ethernet address that seems to be there makes no sense to me (it contained characters like ")" and "!"). I restarted, and gave a look at the log files in /var/log/system.log and the only suspicious thing I see is:
    "Jul 29 18:38:18 my-computer /System/Library/CoreServices/mcxd.app/Contents/MacOS/mcxd: MCXD.initializeDirectoryServices: Unable to get the ethernet address "
Is there anything else I can try to see if the ethernet card is still there and functioning?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Luca

Hi Luca, and a warm welcome to the Forums!
It does sound like it is a goner, but just to be certain it's not some damaged Software...
Boot from your Tiger Install Disk, put in your language, then look up top for the Menubar, use System Profiler from there, if Ethernet still doesn't give an addy, well, that's about it.
