Problems on 500Kbps

Hi everyone!
I started experimenting with CAN about 2 days ago and already have problems. I am using a PCMCIA CAN/2 card and PCMCIA CAN cabling with a notebook with Windows XP, LABView 7 Express and NI-CAN 2.1.3. I have connected the system to a vehicle and I can see the values in the Bus monitor in MAX when I set the baud rate to 500Kbps. Then I tried to do the same with using the CAN-Receive.vi example that comes with LABView. It is set up to use a baud rate of 125000 and with this setting it will obviously not read any information off the bus. Then I changed the baud rate in the setup window in the VI and it suddenly gave an error (Hex 0xBFF62005) and says that some attribute is not valid. I then changed the baud rate in every possible place that I could find in the VI and sub VIs and it always gives the same error message.
I do not understand how I have to change the baud rate if it is not possible to do so in the ncConfigCANNet.vi???
Could anyone tell me if I have been overlooking something, or is it simply something that I do not know because I am inexperienced with CAN?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Charel Marais

Hi Charel,
make sure that you use '500000' (or '500k') for a baud rate of 500Kbps. The NI-CAN driver knows only a few baud rates by the bit rate number, other baudrates need to be provided as BTR values. For more information on this, please take a look at knowledge base article # 0ZEF3MHR:
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/3efedde4322fef19862567740067f3cc/cba1fc627ffa0f8f862564dc0071b3a7?OpenDocument
If that doesn't help, could you post a log file? You can capture all calls to the NI-CAN driver by running NI Spy at the same time. Open NI Spy (Start » Programs » National Instruments » NI Spy) and make sure that the NI-CAN API is selected (Spy » Options » View Selections).
Start NI Spy and then run the VI.

  • The big iChat problems. Audio/Video (now completely broken in 10.7.3), the "not-authorized" problem

So, I am running iChat on OS X Lion 10.7.3 on an early-2011 MBP 13'' . These problems have been here for a while, though (I got my comp with 10.7.0). I have AIM/GMail/Yahoo connected..
One problem is the issue of non-authorized people. There is a list of "not authorized" people that I have to scroll past in my "offline" section of iChat buddies before I actually get to the real offline contacts. Big note here: All these people have the address (something)@aol.com. These contacts have come up as a result of my gmail connection. You see, a few months ago Gmail and AIM did this chat unification process where @aol.com contacts can be just added into Gmail for chatting. These @aol.com copies come up asking for an invite when the REAL AIM address person talks to me. The invites leave once I press decline, but then they stay on my list as not authorized. If I delete these "not-authorized" copies, the invites will come up again and the cycle will repeat. It is a nuisance considering how much of these false contacts are on my list.
Second problem is video/audio chat in general. This issue really applies on AIM/Yahoo—there is nothing for Gmail because people usually use the web interface which simply doesn't work with iChat video/audio. If the people used Google talk, the issue written below would probably come up.
See, what happens is that…(now in 10.7.3), video/audio chat is simply broken, simple as that. My contacts always tell me that an error has occurred when trying to accept my video chat invite. It simply doesn't work. They are using AIM desktop in most cases. When it DID used to work (to a very limited extent, I'll say; it was hit or miss earlier pre 10.7.3, now it's just miss), it was just video but NO audio. They could see/hear me, I could only see them. When I did audio chats, they hear me, I..don't hear them (so audio chats were pointless). The only case where this problem doesn't happen is where it's Mac to Mac, iChat to iChat. VERY limited in use of audio/video chat, if you ask me.

    Hi,
If AIM contacts have been added to your Google Buddy List then I would login to Google and remove them from there  (the iGoogle or GoogleMail web pages will show the Chat option)
Whilst they are still in the List then the Authorization request will probably be resent (In this case it is probably being generated by the method Google are using to add the AIM names as iChat only sends it once).
Google/Jabber Video chats is only iChat to iChat and so is Yahoo with iChat 6.
The Yahoo App streams Video which People can be allowed to see and Audio is added in as an Audio Chat.
The connection Process is not the same and iChat/AIM
Jabber and Google use Jingle to Connect (in fact Google's version is not that compatible with other Jabber apps).
This means iChat to the Standalone PC app  or any Web Browser using the Google Video Plug-in (PC or Mac) or to any Jabber app that is using a Google ID (or a Jabber ID) will not work.
On the iChat to AIM on a PC.
This has always been a bit of a hit and miss affair.
Some people have no trouble but other spend ages trying to set things up and never find the solution.
This is the Original Users Tip  (up to about AIM5.9)
A "replacement" for that tip that has not made it across yet.
I have yet to try Video to the Web Login version that is now on offer.
However I would limit the Bandwidth in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (possibly try 200kbps for 1-1 chats) as you will not know the interent speed available to the Buddy if they are using the web login.
    Comparisons
When you compare iChat actual functions to what you would like it to do it can appear to be limited.
On the basis that you would want your IM app to be able to have Buddies from other services listed in a Buddy list (combined) or Lists which apps do you know of can do that and Video to some of them ?
Adium and ProteusX can both have Buddies from the major Services ina  Buddy List but don't do Audio or Video.
Yahoo and MSN both allow the other's Buddies in the list but I am not sure about Video or Audio chats
They cannot connect to Jabber or AIM buddies even for text chats.
Jabber does depend on the server you use and whether that does Transports for you to have text chats with other services.
    Instructions for iChat.
Mercury IM is a JAVA version of MSN and still has not got to Audio and Video
    Similar for aMSN
    Gizmo5 and YakforFree both died...
Skype is Cross Platform  but is only 1-1 in Video chat.  (cost extra for 3 and 4 way chats)
Yahoo had dropped support for their Mac version now iChat has the Yahoo option  (you can still download it  - IT being the beta it has been for  years).

  • A persistent Broadband problem

    Dear BT,
Posted this earlier in another thread, thought I would start fresh thread for this, as my post was conflicting with another customers post.
I have been experiencing chronically poor Broadband speed since around mid December last year, and I can’t get the problem resolved.
It is extremely frustrating. My Download Speed is for the most part around 136 kbps, though the upload speed is stable at around 250kbps, what ever my very varible download speed happens to be.
I have had numerous visits from ‘OpenReach’ since I first reported the problem back in December last year. When the first engineer called, ironically the speed had improved and I was getting a download speed of around 600 kbps. He tested the line and said it was good and could find no problems.
The improvement continued for a couple of day, then the speed gradually reduced back to a very poor state of around 136kbps. At this stage I did notice intermittent phone line noise, this would come and go, completely clear some days, then another day it would be very bad. In my opinion the weather conditions were not to blame as the intermittent line interference continued whatever the weather conditions, be it good or poor.
Just before Easter I reported a line problem as a voice fault.
Last Tuesday 6th April another engineer came to check noise on the phone line, frustratingly when he called the phone line was perfect and my Broadband speed and improved considerably. He found no problems with my line at all. For a couple of days the line was good, Broadband speed was between, 500kbps and 960 kbps.
He did say intermittent faults were the worst to pin down, and he said it would be better if the line completely failed, then it would be easy to trace, the only problem with that, I could be waiting months or even years for the line to fail.
Now again the speed has dropped out again, back to around 136kbps, there has been some slight interference on the line also. I am sure the noise is the cause, but frustratingly, each time I report it, the checks all say nothing is wrong with my line.
I have done all the usual checks on my equipment. My rooter is not at fault, as I have changed it, changed filters and also changed my phone this week. I am completely at a loss what to do!!
Also my rooter is connected directly in to the main BT box, so that rules out any internal wiring problems.
My broadband package is BT Total Broadband Option 3, so I can access BT FON, but I am unsure of the rules regarding this service as an alternative.
I would be pleased if my ongoing problem could be finally resolved. Finally below is the latest speed test, taken around 11:30am today, 11th April 2010.
Download speed achieved during the test was - 101 Kbps For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps. Additional Information: Your DSL Connection Rate :160 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM) IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi, Chris, Roger, or anyone at BT,
I am back, after doing all the above, I am sad to report that my Broadband speed has just gone form bad to worse.
Below is a log over the last week or so.
    Broadband log
    · 14th tested voice line from BT test socket with filter and rooter: Line seems ok.
14th April 2010: Plugged new BT filter and rooter directly in to BT test socket. No improvement of BB speed. Download speed = 120kbps. Can now hear a distinct background hiss on voice line now the router is active. Changed filters, (4 different types) no improvement. (Filter is installed correctly. )
15th After 24 hours download speed improved to 640kbps. At around 16:00hrs, ASDL signal dropped out, 2 mins later when ASDLS signal re-connected, the download speed immediately dropped all the way back to 120kbps and stayed there for the rest of the day.
    · 16th: BB speed very poor all day, stuck at 136kbps, still continuous background hiss on voice line.
    · 17th: BB speed continues to be very poor, 120kbps, continues loud hiss on voice line.
    · 18th: BBs a consistently poor 136kbps. Background hiss continues.
    · 19th: ditto
    · 20th: ditto
To day at 19:30 hrs, BST, voice line very bad, continuous interference, ASDL disconnecting continually. Obviously this noise on the line is the cause of the problem, but getting and engineer here when the line is bad, seems to be impossible, as every time one has called the interference goes away. Can anyone suggest where I go from here, because engineers have failed to correct my problem, see above posts, this has been going on now since last Early December last year. I am paying for a premium for a terrible BB and Telephone service.
    Regards
    Paul

  • Well here we go again another month same problem

Im really annoyed about this now it is every month since march the same problem.
Had the issue at begin of sept got engineer to come out 16th sept to fix the issue he tested everything in the house and there was no problems. He went to the exchange and reset stuff there telling me to give it to the 3rd October to settle down.  So it settled at max achievable speed 2000kbps and my ip profile was 2000 kbps but my ip profile went down to 1750 on the 28th of sept.
Well today yip you guessed it my max speed is 500kbps and my ip profile is now 500kbps.
Im so fed up now as i will again have to wait for them to sort it out and then it will be ok for a couple of weeks with the max speed and ip profile going down till im back at 500kbps on each.
There has got to be something causing this, the quiet line test is clear, my hub is wired direct to the wall socket that has an inbuilt filter in it.
the noise level has gone to 13.3

  • Ichat 3.0.9 to ichat 5.0.3 connection problems

    Hi, situation as follows:
Mac A : iMac G4 17" (domed body) running OS 10.4.11 and iChat 3.0.9 with external iSight camera
    Mac B : iMac G5 20" running 10.6.6 and iChat 5.0.3
When Mac A tries to call Mac B, a window pops up showing the cameras view of the user in front of Mac A, with an accompanying message of waiting for Mac B user to respond but unfortunately Mac B never receives the ring.
When Mac B tries to call Mac A, a window pops up showing the cameras view of the user in front of Mac B, with an accompanying message of waiting for Mac A user to respond. In this case Mac A gets the ringing and answers the call and 'Accepts'. Unfortunately after a few moments Mac A gets a 'connection error' message, ending with the choice of whether to send the problem to Apple or not. Mac A video picture freezes. At Mac B, camera continues to show Mac B user, with the message of 'waiting for Mac A user to respond'.
    Can anyone give some advice.
    Robert
FYI. I brought the two mac beside each other and used Bonjour and everything work fine.

    Hi,
Did you try both computers at the same Location with their AIM or Jabber names ?
(I presume that at the moment that they are at different locations)
From this page add the six Screen Names shown in Table 1 to the AIM (Valid) Buddy Lists on Both computers.
Can both computers contact those Auto Responders ?
(I have no Auto Responders for a Jabber Buddy List to use)
    On Mac A
Go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the speed to 1.5Mbps (T1/Intranet/LAN) as the Automatic and LAN/Intranet options are not read by iChat properly.
    Restart iChat on this computer.
(This allows it to make the best use of the Internet connection)
In System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall do this:-
http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/iChatPicsFolder/6%20iChat%20Ports/slides/3iChat_Ports_Firewall-SelectTAB.html (Use the red arrows above the pics to proceed to the next pic)
They may also need to open or allow ports in their Router
Post back with Make and Model plus Version number for more specific info.
Basically use UPnP if you/they have it or open all those ports listed in the last pic from the link using Port Forwarding.
    On Mac B
If the Firewall Is ON they go to the Advanced Button and Enable Allow Signed apps and Add ichat to the list
(The firewall is In System Preferences > Security > Firewall (It moved in 10.5.x)
There is no Quicktime setting for this computer
In iChat > Preferences > Video section set the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps (iChat does not need to be restarted)
iChat 5 "Sees" the whole of the Internet Speed you/they have.
This means you can send much more data more quickly to Slower Buddies.
There is evidence that iChat 4.x cannot always buffer the Video fast enough when it come from iChat 5 on a fast connection. (There also seems to be some correlation with this in getting connected in the first place where iChat 5 thinks the other end has not responded (possibly "quick enough"). )
Check the router at this end as well.
The Log that pops up on Machine A and B can be expanded (old ones are stored in Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors )
I could do with seeing these (At least down to the Line that reads "Binary Images for iChat" - the bits below that tell us nothing at this stage)
The type of Error code listed near the top paragraph can give clues as to what the issue is:-
    Error 22 Speed issue somewhere.
Error 7 and 10 (No Data for 10 Secs tends to be a Router issue - Excessive features getting in the way)
Error 8 is a bit of a catch all but can be about ports in the router.
There are other codes as well but these are the most common.
NOTE Error 7 and 10 can have a different message to the one I quoted.
POrts for ichat 4 and 5
    ||iChat Ports||TCP||UDP||
    |AIM|5190|5190|
    |A/V|none|5678, 16393-16402|
    |Bonjour|5298|5297, 5298, 5353|
    |Jabber|5220,5222, 5223|none|
Note this is the iChat 4 and 5 Range
Add port 5060 UDP for iChat 2 and 3 and extend the group of 10 to 16384-16403 (20 ports)
iChat 4 and 5 also uses an undeclared Random port to do the Screen Sharing part and works if you can and do use UPnP (Or Port Mapping Protocol) to open ports in your routing device.
    Hope this helps.

  • D-Link DIR-615 and iChat problem

I had a netgear previously, but it broke after a year so I bought this D-Link. I never had any problems with iChat, but now I get disconnected from iChat every few minutes. Any thoughts?

    OK,
    Pings.
To Ping someone or an IP is to use the computer or router to send a Sort of "knock knock" request to the IP or server/computer name.
On most devices you can Ping other devices on your LAN as there is no block to this.
A lot of devices though, have this disabled for the WAN (Wide Are Network + Internet) side of things.
This keeps the Public IP your ISP gives your Modem somewhat secret.
Like most things on the internet it an be abused.
The Network Utility in Applications/Utilities has the ability to send Pings.
The normal function is to send 10 pings and see if any get lost and to see how long they take to get a response.
You will see that there is an option to send Unlimited Pings. It is this that gets abused. There are ways of sending many pings very quickly as an Attack.
This can result in your Internet connection failing as the device or computer get tied up dealing with the Pings.
On the other hand certain apps like iChat use a Ping to confirm that it is the correct place/computer is is talking to.
For iChat it works like this.
One end send the Visible Invite (The Pop up to Invite to an A/V Chat).
This is sent by iChat on Port 5678
iChat then moves to port 16402 to do the Connection Process using the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).
Part of this process is to send a Ping to confirm where the Visible Invite went to is the place/computer that is responding to the SIP Request. As you can be logged in twice to a Screen Name it confirms that the you are responding - It also stops someone eavesdropping and pretending to be you.
iChat will not work in A/C Chat unless this function is Allowed.
    *Denial of Service (DoS)*
This is somewhat of a hang over from the days when groups of "Hackers" used to organise a time to bring down a web server.
Lots of people would all go to the same web site (requesting a page)
Then they would hit the refresh button over and over (Many Request for the page).
eventually so many requests are made that the web server cannot cope and the whole server would "go down" and lose it's Internet Connection.
Strictly speaking it does not have to be application related like a web server/page but has to involve the computer doing something to reply.
With DoS (if your device has it) it has a preset threshold where it will regard the data coming to your computer as being "Too Much, Too Quickly", and cut the one port the data is coming in on.
With iChat Video there is a vast amount of data that can come very fast with modern Internet Speeds and you bump into the Threshold even before you see your Buddies Video pic.
There is no way to adjust the Threshold so it needs to be Disabled for iChat to work.
    *Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI)*
Works in a similar manner to DoS in that it tries to Inspect the incoming stream and judge if it should be allowed. With modern speeds there come a point when it cannot cope and it again shuts the port it is happening on to "Protect" the whole Internet Connection.
Again for iChat it needs to be Disabled if you have it.
Limiting iChat to use only 500kbps of your Bandwidth (a portion of your Internet speed in most cases) may get around the Threshold of DoS and help SPI cope.
There are some risks to Disabling these settings but mostly this depends on how big a target you appear to be on the Internet.
There is a smaller risk of suffering drive by attacks. However I have never suffered one in 5 years of using iChat.
I have not suggested changing any of the other settings in your device.

  • Bandwidth Problems

We are trying to use iChat with a grandson in Iraq. We get a satisfactory Picture ( pixelates frequentl but passable) but almost unintelligible Audio. We however had an audio chat with sound as clear as a local phone call. He uses AIM in Iraq on a PC we are using Mac and iChat over here. He has bandwidth problems over there as he notices slow photo uploads and downloads. He is new at this as he just got the CAM for Christmas, does anyone know if there are there bandwidth adjustments in AIM that he can tinker with to try to improve the situation like we have in iChat, or any suggestions to try. (I doubt that adjsuting the speed on the Mac on this side will help!)

    Hi,
On the Mac end it should have System Preferences < Quicktime > Streaming set to 1.5Mbps
In the iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit it may pay to try 500kbps or 200kbps to limit what you send him.
AIM 5.9 on a PC does have a Outgoing adjustment and I am not sure if changing it will help the incoming stuff but it may free up processor time.
He should start a Chat with you (or you with him)
In AIM 5.9 he has his Preview in a tab behind your incoming Video.
He should bring this to the front (And take off Pic-in Pic if set)
Next to the Pic and on the right he should now have a small squarish iCon
    Click on this
This will bring up a slider.
Sliding it to the left actually reduces the quality of the Pic from his end.
It is not normally visible but what it does do is allow his processor to produce more frames a sec.
If you open the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) in iChat you will see his incoming Frame Rate and Bit rate and as he slides this to the left you may see changes.
If there are no changes then the issue is going to be the Bandwidth at his end.
At this stage I would suggest a Web Browser based alternative like MeBeam
See here items 9 through 12
These use Flash in a Web Browser to allow access to the Camera and Mic
Once you have entered a room name (your choice) it creates a web page with that name and pops up the Flash Control Panel. Set this to Allow and choose your camera and adjust the Mic volume (Use Headphones/headset if possible)
The MeBeam site pops the control Panel up as soon as you enter the room and can be re-accessed via Settings. the other sites require you use the Settings Button first.
    Hope this helps
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Problems after router change

I have just changed my wireless router and am having problems connecting with iChat video. I have tested it with Apple testers on my old router (802.11g/b) and it works perfectly but it will not connect with my new one (802.11n) although it does work OK from one of my computers to the other - perhaps a local network issue? The message I get is that I have been disconnected because no data has been received in the last 10 seconds. The routers are the same make (Netgear) and I have populated each of them with much the same data regarding Firewall rules etc. Any help would be appreciated. I could just go back to the old one but I'm hoping for better speeds and range from the new one so would like to get it working.

    Hi,
The DG834G Netgear that I had would not work without the DOS being Off and the Pings being allowed.
Do you still have the Port Forwarding setting Enabled ?
I am curious about the VPN.
Some VPNs are set up with an Internet connection as part of the process.
It sounds like this one is not. iChat cannot resolve two connections to the Internet (Wifi and Ethernet at the same time for instance)
The No Data for 10 Secs message means you were connected (even if you did not see any Video or hear any Audio).
The message means that iChat did not end the chat and that an external event did, such as pulling an Ethernet cable, router failure, turning off the Mac's Airport card.
DOS work on a threshold basis and if it receives "Too much Data, Too Quickly" it cuts the port that this is happening on to "Protect" the whole connection.
This threshold cannot be changed and tends to be lower than iChat can Stream video over modern connection speeds.
I would try two things separately.
The SIP ALG is something I did not have on my Netgear.
iChat Uses SIP so I would try it with that ON.
Also try setting iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps
iChat 5 Can "See" your whole Internet Connection speed. (iChat 4 and Earlier was limited to a max of 1.5Mbps set in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming - a setting that does not exist in Snow Leopard)
It could be that the new router allows faster throughput and that you have moved to iChat 5 meaning you are bumping into the DOS threshold.
Of course the issue could be at the other end. The log is not that specific about which end "Cut" the connection.

    Hi,
The DG834G Netgear that I had would not work without the DOS being Off and the Pings being allowed.
Do you still have the Port Forwarding setting Enabled ?
I am curious about the VPN.

  • ITunes Store Bandwidth Problem Today

I've read a few posts here today about problems connecting to the Store. I got to the Store, made a purchase, and the download is still going because it is so slow.
Over the past week I have downloaded 5 episodes of Battlestar Galactica and they all went very fast at ~6000kbps. But today my download is only going at 500kbps!
They must be having some kind of server problems today.

DrGoo's post here might be worth checking on:

  • Sudden Dropped Frames Problem with 720p24 material

After sailing along for months with perfect operation from Final Cut Pro, editing 720p24 (I'm still running 5.0.4), I have encountered a mysterious hangup that I can't seem to solve. It probably began shortly after I was doing a test on a new project and mistakenly used a 44khz sound file rather than a 48khz. That project ran fine for a couple of days as I played with it, then abruptly began to drop frames at very particular points. I trashed the sound file and reimported it as a 48khz file and that seemed to fix things for a day or two. Then, to my utter horror, when I opened a very large ongoing project that I needed to tweak, I found that the dropped file problem has corrupted my entire FCP operation. I have tried changing various settings, such as unlimited RT, and trashed the preferences as well, but none of the straightforward cures seems to make a difference. I've also looked at all the suggestions in the Apple dropped frames article at [docs.info.apple.com]. I have never had a problem with dropped frames prior to this.
My scratch disk is a raided SATA drive with plenty of space to spare. This setup has worked flawlessly since July. I have jumped around over the past 10 days from work on old SD projects to 720p24 projects and have been changing settings here and there to accomodate this. Nothing else seems to have been changed that may account for the glitch.
I have not reinstalled the software.
Anything that comes to mind as a logical next step would be most appreciated!

Yes during panning or zooming I can see that frames are dropping in the stats panel.
I'm encoding at 500kbps video + 48 audio, outputting only one stream.
The content in the input monitor shows exactly what the cam is seeing, with the pan and/or zoom correctly displayed. On the output monitor side the action will freeze momentarily when frames are dropped. Then the display will skip to the point where no more frames are being dropped.
The native frame rate for the cam is 29.97, but as an output, averaging in the dropped frames the rate may drop as low as 27 or 28fps according to the stats panel. The difference being the number of dropped frames.
FMLE is installed on a Dell Studio 15 with 4 GB RAM, which I would think would be plenty adequete.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Delay problem

Currently, We are engaging in realtime streaming service with FMS4.
However, Comparing with the unreal streaming server, FMS4’s delaying time is bit longer according to the testing results.
So, Could you please provide me any setting methods or relevant manual for configuration to minimize the delaying time?
    Thanks for your support.
    best regards,

    Hi,
I use FMS 3.5 and i have same problem.....the delay of live video from the studio to clients is big, 10 seconds if i restart the server. After one day of staying on, the delay reaches 1 minute or 2.
The FMS is connected to 1 Gibabyte internet fiber, and the stream is VP6, 500kbps video and 128kbps audio, 720x576 resolution. Server Quad 3.0Ghz, 4 Gb Ram.
Please help me to minimize the delay. What i must write in application.xml from live folder?????? Is there a command.
I don't want to make buffer, i want the clients to receive live stream, if the stream is buffering i want to play it jumping that sequence, to maintain the live aspect, not to delay it if the clients doesn't have a good internet conection.
Let's suppose i have 1 FMS, 1 Media Encoder, and 2 computers with flash player on the same Switch ( Local area Network). I've made some tests and the delay i get is minimum 5 seconds.   How can i reduce it????    Ping value to server is 1ms!
    Please help me!
    Thank's

    Hi,
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall is the Firewall ON ?
If ON, in the Advanced Tab is Allow Signed App selected and IS iChat in the list ?
    Also is Stealth deselected ?
Also try setting iChat Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps

  • Problems video chatting with Windows users

It seems like everytime I try and video chat with a Windows AIM user there is a problem. Ralph and other are very techy and know how to resolve these issues. Problem is that 99.9999999% of te people I chat with are not so the advice to resolve these issues proves to be worthless. However me and this individual were able to successfully do audio chat instead. Often when there is a problem like this do I switch people over to Skype which works far better going from Windows to Mac and vice versa and is easier to use. Generally I think iChat has better video quality over Skype, but only with Mac users.
I know there are others here that also have this problem and for you do I encourage the same resolution as bad as it is, but it seems to be the only way to chat with a non techy person who is on a PC.

    Hi,
Any non Microsoft app on a PC has to allowed through the Firewall as a Exception  (Or at least since Service Pack 2 for XP when Windows got a firewall).
In XP it goes like this
Open the Control Panels (I prefer the classic view)
    Open the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
In the new window click the Add Button
Navigate through Program Files to the AIM Folder and the relevant AIM#.exe to allow the app itself. (#  is the Version Master number)
Back in the Exceptions window also Allow UPnP
    Enable UPnP in their Router.
I am not sure it is that different in Vista or Window 7
If there router does not have UPnP then open port 5190 and 1024-5000  (AIM video does not use all of these they are there to spread the load)
They would have to do similar things for Skype (although like AIM it has Fall Back ports below 1024 for logging in and Text Chatting that get around the firewall issue) other IM apps and On-line Games.
Of course if they are using some third party Firewall they would have to do the work there.
    Audio Chats V VIdeo Chats
Both apps use the same ports when it comes to Audio and Video Chats  (Tend to be the iChat ones)
I believe AIM still uses 4 ports (from the 1024-5000 range) for VId In, Vid Out, Audio In, Audio out, much the same way iChat 2 and 3 did.
It may pay for you to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth limit and try either 500kbps or 200kbps as the setting.
In earlier version of AIM (5.5 anbd 5.9) it was possible to reduce the Video quality at the AIM end (less frames per second) which allowed "Space" for the Audio part.
AIM 6.x onwards does not have this and the Video feed can be particularly Processor hungry.  Your lower setting will be fed back to them and their end will make an adjustment of what can be sent.
Some of this knowledge has taken me since 2004 to acquire.
I can see that applying it might be considered "techy"
I can appreciate that it can be very difficult to persuade a Windows user to change any setting once they have their machine "working" (at least as they want).
I realise this was not so much of a Question as being more of a discussion statement.
I am not sure that there is a real answer other than the one you suggest.

  • BT Infinity Wireless Problems

    Hi,
We've just had BT Infinity installed on Wednesday, and seem to be having a few problems with it.
We've had BT Broadband with the home hub 2 for a couple of years, but over the last few months the wireless performance seems to have degraded a fair bit. I was still downloading at about 500kbps on my desktop but playing online on the xbox 360 and ps3 was impossible due to lag and disconnections. Contacted BT, and went through all the basic motions to fix it, but then got to the stage where the next thing to try was replacing the home hub. BT offered us an upgrade to BT Infinity, which I thought would end all the problems and speed things up a lot, but that doesn't seem to have happened.
Had the engineer round on Wednesday when I was at work, he tested the connection both wired and then upstairs to my desktop setup, and said it was fine. When I got home, initially the connection wasn't picking up, but as soon as I started internet explorer it picked it up, and I was downloading at around 1.8mbps on steam, and all the problems on the consoles seemed to be rectified. Later that night though, I saw that the connection had dropped out on the desktop. Eventually it came back, but downloading at about 36kbps. Then it dropped out again with a 'limited connectivity' problem. At first I thought it might be the old Netgear wireless adaptor I was using, but both the xbox and ps3 weren't connecting either.
I've tried changing channels on the router, and even switching down to just b/g networking standard from b/g/n to see if that makes any difference, but nothing. I know you're supposed to give a new connection 10 days or so to settle down, but I can't see that having that big of an impact. The only other thing I can think of is a major amount of interference coming from somewhere, but the weird thing now is that the connection is even less reliable with Infinity than it was with just plain broadband.
If anyone has any advice I'd be very grateful!

    Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share my feedback following my recent migration from ADSL BT broadband to Infinity.
Firstly, the speed is noticably quicker, especially through a wired connection, but...
Over the last weekend I have spent more than 1.5 hours on the phone to support finding out why my connection was being dropped.
The symptoms: Wired connection OK, but wireless connections were not getting out to the internet.
Cause: Wireless connections were not being allocated IP addresses, or were losing IP registration.
BT checked the line and found no issues. To fix the problem, I had to reset the HH3 router, and in one case, I had to reset the OpenReach box.
I understand that it's good practice to reset / restart a router from time to time to refresh the connection, but I have had to do this four times in the last three days. Yesterday, I had to do it twice in three hours!
This is frankly unacceptable. It's interesting to note that some Infinity users are choosing to use their own routers instead and I guess I'll probably end up doing that myself, but I really shouldn't have to.
BTW - Before moving to Infinity I was using BT ADSL Broadband with a Belkin router - I restarted that router about once a year. It's frustrating that I've moved to a faster, yet less stable service (referring to the total service provided by BT - hardware and connection).
    Thanks for reading!
    SB
