Problems with CPU frequency scaling

Hello!
I'm having problems following this wiki page in order to set up frequency scaling. My CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+, so I tried to load the powernow-k8 module. However, the device couldn't be found. Turning AMD Cool'n'Quiet fixed that, but soon after loading the module, my computer would crash. Changing CPU frequency profiles in BIOS only changed if my computer would crash immediately or a few seconds after loading the module. My motherboard is Asus M2N SLI.
Could someone help me fix this?

Thanks for your reply!
Unfortunately, I can't seem to even do that. I just ran this after setting the BIOS profile to Auto:
sudo modprobe powernow-k8 && dmesg | grep powernow > dmesg.txt && lsmod | grep powernow > lsmod.txt
As soon as I pressed return, the command seemed to have executed successfully, basically this is what happened:
[davor@kompika ~]$ sudo modprobe powernow-k8 && dmesg | grep powernow > dmesg.txt && lsmod | grep powernow > lsmod.txt
[davor@kompika ~]$
And the system froze. Upon pressing the reset key and booting the system normally, a dmesg.txt file was indeed created in my home dir, but was empty. An lsmod.txt file was nowhere to be found.
I have tried the Standard and Manual (with settings set to defaults) profiles, and they resulted in immediate reboots. I will try a few more times, because I seem to remember the system being able to run at least a few seconds before finally crashing/freezing.
EDIT:
Did it! Since the command did, in fact, execute entirely, I figured the problem must've been the lack of a clean unmount. So I created a small ext4 partition and ran as root:
mkdir /root/logs
mount /dev/sda1 /root/logs
modprobe powernow-k8 && dmesg | grep powernow > /root/logs/dmesg.txt && lsmod | grep powernow > /root/logs/lsmod.txt && umount /dev/sda1
I realize this is bad practice, but I figured running commands directly as root instead of running them through sudo would maybe save a few milliseconds.
Regardless, it worked! Here is dmesg.txt:
[ 327.826619] powernow-k8: Found 1 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ (2 cpu cores) (version 2.20.00)
[ 327.826948] powernow-k8: fid 0x12 (2600 MHz), vid 0xa
[ 327.826950] powernow-k8: fid 0x10 (2400 MHz), vid 0xc

[ 327.826957] powernow-k8: fid 0x2 (1000 MHz), vid 0x12
And here is lsmod.txt:
powernow_k8 13360 1
mperf 1275 1 powernow_k8
processor 26144 1 powernow_k8

  • Cpu frequency scaling not working and hdd powers down

    Hi,
I recently made a fresh reinstall on my laptop keeping only my user settings (home directory) but no system-wide settings (/etc).
Now I have the following issues:
    1) CPU frequency scaling does not work. KDE's PowerDevil tells me, my CPU does not have scaling capability and when I try to start cpufreq, I get this error message:
    # /etc/rc.d/cpufreq start
:: Setting cpufreq governing rules , cpu 0 1Error setting new values. Common errors: [BUSY] - Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)ble_governors: No such file or directory
    - Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?
    - Trying to set an invalid policy?
    - Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available,
for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency
or because the userspace governor isn't loaded?
    The governor modules are loaded:
    # lsmod | grep cpufreq
    cpufreq_userspace 2096 0
    cpufreq_powersave 942 0
    cpufreq_ondemand 7990 0
    freq_table 2339 1 cpufreq_ondemand
    cpufreq_conservative 9172 0
This used to work out-of-the box with the previous install so I'm a bit puzzled.
    2) My hard drive powers down after a few seconds of inactivity, just to power up a few seconds later when it's accessed again. The hard drive never powered down on my previous installation. I do not have any power management daemons running and this behavior starts right after booting the machine, before I log in.
I would like to disable this "feature" since I think it's rather bad for the hard drive's health as well as battery life.
    Any ideas?:)
EDIT: Cpu frequency scaling is fixed now, forgot to load the acpi_cpufreq module. There's still the issue with the hard drive, though.

The HDD thing is caused by upowerd, dunno why though.
You can try: hdparm -B 254 <disk device>, but that wont solve the problem permanently, only till you plug and unplug again the AC supply.
you can also try killing upowerd and things will (at least that was the case for me) be alright.
    Maybe this is upowerd bug?

  • [solved] GNOME cpu frequency scaling monitor applet doesn't work

    Hello,
i have installed everything successfully (i come from fedora), but now i have a problem
I want to add the cpu frequency scaling monitor applet to the panel, but i can't see it. When i rightclick on this place, the submenu with settings and so on is displayed, and i can choose the other cpu1 instead of cpu0, then the applet appears. But the applet shows 0 Mhz and i can't choose a frequency or something.
I start GNOME with xinit and have added exec ck-launch-session gnome-session to ~/.xinitrc, because shutdown wasn't displayed at the beginning and automouting permission problems.
    What's the problem?
Edit: My system is a netbook with intel atom cpu

the problem is that the modules are not loaded automatically for cpu scaling and you have to explicity add them into rc.conf, MODULES array.
    MODULES=(...acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand...)

  • Problem with CPU Voltage

    Hello
    I build new PC with:
    i5-760
    Noctua NH-D14
    MSI P55-GD65
    G.Skill 2x2GB CL7 ECO
    Antec TruePower New 750W TP-750
    TwinTech GF 9600GT
I have problem with CPU voltage as even when I set it for example to 1.201v in bios, under load it overshot to 1.256-1268. The best is when I oc`ed cpu to 4GHZ and set voltage in bios for 1.30v it overshot for 1.45v+! Not to mention that temps are skyhigh from that. It doesn`t matter if I try to put BIOS Vcore on 1.1v on stock because under load it still rise to 1.16. I turned off all eist, c-state, turbo boost, phase led and switch phase, set vdrop to low and still something is wrong here. I updated the bios under dos from USB stick to newest 1.9 version in order to update CPU micro code without error and it not helped. I want to know is that even possible to fix or should I RMA MB or CPU.
Minor problem is with sysfans as they power on for a second and turn off instantly to start working again when I see list on devices in post. After rebot when my monitor is switched off it takes something like 5 sec to power monitor on and another 5 to show bios, is that normal?

I have similar issues, it's hard to tell which measurement is the most accurate, there are 2 different measurements in the control center that don't match up with the figures set in the bios.  The only way to be sure would be to get an expensive accurate multimeter but If you're only interested in running a stable overclocked computer without knowing the exact figures then get the computer running stable and lower the voltages until it starts to become unstable with prime95,
Or you could work the other way round, set the voltages so it boots but doesn't run prime95 for long, then raise the vcore and vtt one at a time until your happy with the length of time prime95 runs without errors.  I'd be happy with 24 hours, I seem to remember errors creeping in at around the 9 hour mark on the setting below what I have it set to now.

  • Error out problems with measuring frequency VI

I am having some error out problems with measure frequency VI. The instructions is change error out from indicator to control but does not work. Anyone can help? The VI is attached

Measure Frequency VI error.vi ‏27 KB

This VI does not have an error out. Obviously, you replaced a subVI that did have an error out with this one, otherwise you would not have been able to create this wire.
Simply remove the wire or save the subVI with another name then modify it to have the error out that you are looking for.
    Hope that this helps,

  • Serious problem with CPU "maximum frequency"

    Hello,
    I have a problem with my W510.
I think that this problem has been around since I purchased it, or at least since a month or so after I purchased it.
When I plug power in or out it almost always affects the CPU's maximum frequency, as can be seen in Windows 7 Resource Monitor, and also in a program called CPU-Z which actually shows the current Core Speed.
When things work properly, the core speed is a little over 3,000 Mhz.
However, this speed changes whenever I plug the power in or out.
It usually changes for the worse when I plug the power IN!
Often, upon plugging it in, the speed drops to around 1,000 Mhz. Then I plug it out - and the speed goes back to 3,000 Mhz. Plug it back in - 2,500 Mhz. Plug out - stays on 2,500 Mhz. Plug in - 1,500 Mhz. Plug out - 2,500 Mhz. Plug in - 3,000 Mhz. Plug out - 3,000 Mhz, etc. Every once in a while it even drops to 300 Mhz.
It seems to be random and arbitrary. Sometimes it takes me 10, 15, even 20 times of plugging the power out and back in to get it to work at 3,000 Mhz.
The machine is new, there is no fan noise, and anyway the changes are directly correlated to plugging and power in and out, and they never occur on their own - so it's definitely not overheating or anything like that.
I also don't think that it's an issue with the power itself, since it happens to me in different places and different countries, and in every place if I try to re-plug the power enough times - it will eventually be resolved (so obviously there is enough power).
Is there anyone else who's experiencing this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have found that Throttlestop helps me with my own speedstep problem. The speed moves a lot at light usage due to speedstep, but when i use a cpu benchmark to load the four cores they set to max speed and don't move. You could give it a try.

  • X200: CPU frequency scaling not working in Windows 7 x64

Hi there, this is first posting here. Trust this issue has not been addressed before--if it has please redirect me to the post where this discussion happening.
    Here is my hardware: X200, P8700, 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 7454-32U
I have just upgraded my RAM from 2GB and clean installed Windows 7 x64 (came with XP x86). I have also loaded all the drivers including the power manager driver and power manager from IBM/Lenovo support/download site. all hardware is working fine.
My only problem is that the fan is always on--running at about 3340RPM and blows all the time--temps are at around 42-46C. I have noticed that the CPU is quite, but firing at max all the time--does not scale down when no activity. tis happens when I select "power source optimized" on battery and on AC.
I have noticed that when in XP 32-bit, the CPU will come back at rest to 786MHz--and go up when needed.
Could someone please help me figure out what is goin gon here? I am so tired of looking and posting on other forums that I am about to go crazy. I love this machine, but my only issue now is this.
I have also checked the BIOS and set the CPU to "automatic" and Speed Step is on. I am using the latest BIOs version v3.11 Dec 2009.
    Please help me.
    Regards
    S

Hi Jessica Thank you for the reply and also pointing me to the Upgrade Advisor links-Here is the output for the 64-bit Windows 7 Compatibility assessment--as you see there are no issues with Hardware compatibility. Also I have downloaded all the applicable drivers from Lenovo. The problem still persists.
if you could link me with the direct access to the power management related drivers from lenovo, ACPI and BIOS drivers I will appreciate a great deal. Also to mention, I have upgraded the BIOS Feb 2010 release, and also the Power manager driver to v3.12 (no fixes in fan speed and CPU freq scaling I am afraid.)

  • Problem with CPU?? need help badly

Hey guys, its been a sad two days for me.. I have the MSI k7T266 PRO, and yesterday while i was moving tires into my apartment, one of them fell hard on the floor and my computer shifted, i opened the pc to find out that the CPU fan has shifted from the cpu, and the cpu smelled kind of burnt..
Anyway i had an ATHLON XP 2200 i think...
Anyway i went to compusa today and got a new CPU, an AMD 2400+ SEMPRON PROCESSOR. i installed it, put my huge heatsink, fan, and powered up.... NO SHOW..
The Diagnostic LED's show 4 RED lights,(which according to the manual means a problem with the CPU), it was showing 4 red lights with my old blown cpu and its still showing 4 red lights with the new cpu.. im getting frustrated..
Anyway i tried resetting the bios using the JBAT jumper, it still doesnt work..
I know the new CPU is good because i can tell a blown CPU..
So can anyone help me out??

    Which one is yours?
The Sempron 2400+ CPU has a 166Mhz FSB.
Your board does not support this CPU.

  • Photoshop Premiere 9 vs 13? Are there any problems with CPU usage and crashing?

I stopped using Premiere, because they the computer would freeze and/or the program. I was curious if there was any issue with people currently using Version 13?  I think I loaded it on this computer along with Photoshop Elements 9.  After a while I just kept Photoshop Elements.
    System Specs:

If 64 bit, while 9 will be a 32 bit application with the limitations of a 32 bit application on 64 bit system, 13 will be a 64 bit application which translates into more computer resources available to 13.
Elements Organizer 9 will not integrate with Elements Organizer 13 although you can convert the 9 catalog in Elements Organizer 13. And there is a marked difference in the workspace between the two versions. Principles tend to stay the same, but features can be moved, changed, or discontinued.
I would have expected Premiere Elements 9/9.0.1 to have worked in your computer environment. Since it did not, I would strongly suggest that you look at the free 30 days tryout of Premiere Elements 13/13.1 in your computer environment to assure the compatibility of it with your computer environment and project goals.

  • X38 Platinum: Problem with CPU detection

    Hi everybody,
I've got a little problem with my newly acquired x38/platinum...
I'm currently assembling a new PC on my own... So far all the component have been plugged-in EXCEPT the memory modules (I haven't purchased them yet).
Despite this complete lack of memory, I try to test the correct boot-up of the system.
And then the following problem occurs: the "lcd post" display hang on "CPU" (before rebooting indefinitely)... Not "DRAM" as expected...
The CPU is a Core 2 Quad, and is correctly powered with a 8-pin/12v connector. The CPU-Fan is powered from the correct on-board pins (cpufan). The speakers are plugged, but no specific "beep" are emitted.
One possible mistake I've made: the CPU-Fan is not fully plugged with the 4 "screws": i only (and hardly) manage to clip 2 of them, I'm afraid of breaking the board if y try too hard with the two others.
Could this problem be caused by the absence of DRAM? Or more likely by the the fact that the Fan is not fully clipped? By the way, is that normal that the CPU Fan is so Hard to plug correctly?
Any comments or idea would be greatly appreciated
Thanks (and sorry for the approximate english)

mhz42, please provide full system specs.  Otherwise it is very hard to help you with your problem.  What brand and type of memory are you using?  What other components are part of your system configuration?
The mb is a x38 platinum 1333. The proc is a quad core qx8650, 1333fsb. The hd (western digital caviar) and optical drive (lg h66n) are both on sata and plugged. The memory used is 2go Kingston ddr3 1375mhz... (plugged in DIMM 1/2).
Anyway, I frankly doubt that the problem could come from anywhere else than the cpu (considering the post message)...

Did you properly plug in ALL power connectors?
The powering should be ok... (the MB, the proc, the cpufan and the graphic card are plugged) The processor seems to be correctly powered, if it was not the case, the post process wouldn't even start (tested)...

You could just buy a cheap Pentium 4 and flash it with that.
That's an idea. Or i could directly ship the mb back to msi and thell them to do it themself... After all the spec says cleary "quad core compatible"...
    So?
Just to be sure: the "since 1.1" from the compatibility table from MSI, refeers to the bios version right? Not a sort of MB revision or something?

  • Macbook Late 2011 freezing, problem with CPU power management.

    Hi everyone.
I have Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011. And i have a problem with it.
When laptop is cold, sometimes, it can freeze. Other then this there's no problems with it, no problems at all.
I solved this problem by deleting AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, so for now it's getting a little hotter (not very).
And my question: is there any utility or app, which could let me see what AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext is doing with system, so i could see what causing freezes. I don't have apple services in my country, so i can't bring this laptop to repair.
And if you don't know answer to this question, but know forum, where i might find answers, please write it.
    Thanks in advance.
Sorry for language, i'm not an english speaking.

Catfish, if you're on AC power, and you don't run with a fully charged battery in the machine, then it won't run at full performance. Plus, if the battery is worn out, then it won't charge to nearly its original full capacity, and thus the machine won't run at full performance on AC power.
Note that, if you leave the battery in a drawer for months without using it, that can kill the battery.
    Good luck!

  • Help!!!problem with CPU temp!!!

i am using mega 180,and i have lapped the heatsink, reverse the fans on the heatsink, and use artic silver grease and made a duct for the heatsink, but my CPU temp did'nt low down,on the contrary,it raised about 5C!!!
i am using an amd athlon xp 2500+(thorton)@11.5x166MHz,i have 8606 pci card and 6200 agp card installed, before the temp is:CPU idle 55 and GPU 55,but now it is CPU idle 60C and GPU 65C!!!
can anyone tell me why the TEMP get hotter than before???

Let me add this to this thread.....MEGAs all have heat problems, but with some effort, all the problems can be addressed. Installing a better HSF is only one way to deal with the heat. My MEGA 651s have a special heatsink mount method.....most std heatsinks won't attach properly to the little plastic clips.
However...remove the plastic clips from the MB (four screws) and you can substitute four brass MB stand-offs. With these in place, you can then install a variety of good heatsinks.....with some work/mods.
Here are some photos of two I have installed...an ALPHA 8942, and an AEROCOOL HT-101.
The Aerocool was the hardest to install, but works the best. It did not require any mods to the MEGA that could not be un-done (for a warranty return).
I'm sure with some searching/work many other heatsinks could fit. The result is a much cooler running MEGA.

  • Problem with CPU mapping

    Hi.
We hava a T5140 server configured with just primary domain for tests. But the cpu mapping is not in order.
The physical processors' id range from 8 to 39 for the first CPU and from 64 to 103 for the second CPU. But the virtual processors' id range from 8 to 39 for the first CPU, from 0 to 7 and 40 to 63 for the second CPU.
That means the mapping VID and PID for the first CPU are the same. but in the second CPU, VID is counted from 0 to 7, then from 40(just after 39) to 64. This disordered CPU mapping is not convinient for my experiments. Please tell me how solve these problems.
    My question is:
    1. How to modify physical processors' id start from 0? This problem is not very important now. If there is no solution for this problem, it will be also OK.
    2. How to modify virtual processors' id start from 0 to 31 for the first CPU, and 32 to 63 for the second CPU?

It depends on the usecase of your situation, but it sounds like you may need to make use of the merge capabilities of TopLink. Check out the docs starting on page 6-4 of the "CMP For users of BEA WebLogic Server Guide"
