PSE 8 to PSE 9

Is there an upgrade path between these two products? I use English language PSE 8 here in Norway.
Also, can someone provide a link that explains the differences between these products.
Many thanks
Ron

In the US, the rebate is the same whether or not you've owned a previous version, but someone has reported there is update pricing on amazon.uk, so I don't know about Europe. New features:

  • Bridge in pse 8 / pse 9 for Mac

Hi. I use pse 8 for Mac and is fund of Bridge. Can anyone tell me if pse 9 includes Bridge in (pretty much) the same version.
Or to put it another way: Would I benefit of an upgrade?

Yes, there's no bridge in PSE 9, but you can keep on using Bridge CS4 if you don't want to use organizer. The only problem is that you can't update the raw converter in Bridge anymore, so you won't see thumbnails for newer camera models:

  • I purchased and have installed PSE 12, PSE Premier 12, PSE 13 and PSE Premier 13.  I only need PSE P 13, right?

May I delete the other three or must I keep PSE 13 to utilize PSE Premier 13?

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/configuration-error-cs5.html

  • How do you share thousands of pictures with text and captions outside of PSE?  (PSE 4)

One of my dad’s retirement passions is family genealogy and old family pictures.  Several years ago I gave my family PSE 4.0 for Christmas so that we could each have backup copies of our dad’s pictures.  Usually once per year, I made backup copies of everything and emailed the DVDs to my brothers and sisters.  Everyone knows the basic PSE 4 functions and share our dad's enjoyment with the old family photos.
My problem is that my dad is running out of pictures to scan.  He wants to “share” or “show” his photos with others so that he can “borrow” their photo albums in order to scan their photos.  He plans to attend a hometown high school reunion later this fall.  He hopes to "collect" photo albums from cousins and classmates.  I have been struggling with this for several days without any good ideas.
The scanned pictures lack any text (added as a layer?) or captions.  Creating a slideshow (on my dad’s computer is slow).  Also, a slideshow doesn’t let others select individual pictures to save from the slide show
He has old pictures pre-PSE 4 that allowed him to add captions directly to the picture when it was scanned.  I never liked this approach as it "destroyed" the actual picture but these old pictures are more easily shared as individual pictures.
How do you share thousands of pictures with text and captions outside of PSE?  Can you save or export a composite picture with all the layers?
Thanks in advance for your help and replies.

I think it is one of the printer option screens that gives me the choice of tabbed 4x6. All of the choices specifiy HP or Other so I am pretty sure it is printer software that offers me this choice.
Make sure your image has a 4x6 aspect ratio. I have been quite happy with the tabbed 4x6. Just need to remember to load the paper with the tab last.
So, in elements you set to 4x6, in printer options you should be able to choose 4x6 tabbed paper.

  • Cannot reconnect / specify volume in PSE 8

I just upgraded from an older version of PSE to PSE 8 for windows.  I am running PSE in Parallels on a Mac.  The older version of PSE worked fine in this configuration.  However, when I upgraded to PSE 8, it seems to be looking for the picture volume in a UNC path established by parallels (//.PSF/Home) rather than by mapped drive (P:\).  As a result, all my photos (all 11K of them) are offline.  I cannot find anywhere that I can tell PSE  to look for the volume at P:\.  All I have found is an option to try to tell it to reconnect to the UNC volume (which is the correct path btw)... which for some reason it fails to do.  Any ideas?  HELP!
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Thanks John.   So here's the latest.  Per your suggestion, using PSE5 I moved my photos to the parallels C:\Photos directory.  Then converted the catalog with PSE8.  Everything seemed to work out fine.  All the pictures were online.  Then with PSE8 I moved the files to the P: drive, which is mapped to //.psf/Home/Pictures/Library.  A couple things.  The folder viewer in PSE8 doesn't allow you to drill down on directories outside of where it thinks your photos are.  This wasn't an issue for me since I was simply moving my photos directory from root C to root P.
The big bummer however is that with the move, all the files became disconnected and I cannot get them to reconnect.  In the file viewer they are shown at //.psf/Home/Photos.  When I click on an individual photo, the properties say it is at [//.psf/Home]\\.psf\Home\Photos\<subdir>.  The output from the psedb tool is below.  Do you have any other suggestions?  I'd really like to keep my files on a mapped drive (//.psf/Home/...) so that I can access them from my mac.

I am beginning to believe that PSE8 just can't handle mapped drives.  Ugh.

  • Problems migrating PSE 8 on Windows to Lr 3 on Mac

I have a 22K+ photo PSE 8 catalog on Windows.  I've just recently gotten a new Mac and a coworker convinced me to get Lr 3 for the Mac.  He migrated his PSE catalog (I don't know the version) to Lr 3 on the Mac with no problems.  Lucky him.  After two days I haven't been successful even getting the catalog upgraded to Lr on Windows yet.  Part of the time was due to dumb stuff in my PSE 8 catalog, but I've gotten that worked out now, and I've found solutions to a lot of my problems on this forum (thank you!!).  I'm getting very close to success.  Just one major problem left:  when I upgrade the catalog to Lr 3, open it, and sort by Capture Time, a good number of my photos are either completely missing the Capture Time (700+ photos) or the Capture Time is the date/time of the last edit (who knows how many).  When I look at the metadata of these files in Windows Explorer, it also shows the "Date taken" the same as Lr.  The photos display in perfect chronological order in PSE, and PSE even shows me the correct date/time in the Properties, so obviously it has the desired information.  I tried selecting a file or two and using File | Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info to photo in PSE, but that seems to only write the keywords (like it says) and doesn't change the date taken.  All (or at least the vast majority) of the photos with this problem are JPG files.
Any suggestions on how can I get the date/time stamp that PSE has into Lr?
    Thanks!
    Ruth

Thanks, John!!  I downloaded psedbtool as you suggested.  It corrected the problem with the missing capture time, but the time stamp on the edited pictures was set to GMT (maybe that's what had been wrong with them all along).  I did figure out, though, that it seems to only be pictures from the last year (since I got my newest camera?) that are affected, and since it's just a time zone change, it wasn't too difficult to use Lr to edit the time.  I think all is good now.  :-)  Thanks so much for your help!!
    Ruth

  • Missing Photos in PSE 12, but not in PSE 11

I own PSE 11 & PSE 12.  Several of my photos in PSE 12 have the question mark (missing photo).  These same photos don;t have the question mark in PSE 11.  How can I resolve this issue?

  • PSE 7 catalog error when restoring backup from PSE 5

I am attempting to move from PSE5 on XP to PSE7 on Vista using the backup-restore method, . Catalog is about 75 MB, data set is 56 GB, all stored on external USB drive. Tried restoring in new folder using both with and without restoring folder arrangement.
On PSE 5, most images were online, scattered across E: partition and external USB disk. Restoring to PSE7, files are all restored to a new directory OK, but new catalog lists all files in E: as offline. Let me repeat... the images are moved into a new folder on the new system, but are shown in the organizer as still on a non-existent E: drive on the new computer.
I am left with thousands of untagged images, all of them ther newest and most important in my system.

    Mahlon,
    First, some additional questions:
    1. Did you do File > Catalog > Recover and File > Catalog > Reconnect before doing the backup? Thats very important.
    2. On the old computer, was E: a partition on an internal drive, an external USB drive, or a network drive?
    3. In the restored PSE 7 catalog, are the suspect thumbnails shown with a yellow question icon in their corner or a red circle icon with a line through it (like the international power symbol)?
    4. When you say files are still recorded in the catalog as being on the E: drive, is that as shown in Folder Location view in the left-hand folder heirarchy pane, in the center Folder Location pane, in the Properties pane, or all three? (Check all three, because sometimes PSE will show different drive letters.)
    > This will take a dozen hours on the old system, and I'm skeptical that it will work. PSE7 already converts the PSE5 database in or out of the restore. But it can't correct the pathname on the old system to indicate that the files are local and not offline.
Recovering the PSE 5 catalog, reconnecting missing files, installing PSE 7, and converting the catalog to PSE 7 on the old computer should take about 30-45 minutes (doing a second backup will take much longer).
Converting the catalog on the old computer is different than converting it on the new computer. PSE 7 has a different catalog format than PSE 5 PSE 5 uses drive letters to identify hard drives, whereas PSE 7 relies on serial numbers, and the internal database format is completely different. When you restore to the new computer and try to convert the catalog at the same time, the conversion needs to both update the new paths of all the files
and convert from the old catalog format to the new one, changing drive letters to serial numbers. But when you convert to PSE 7 on the old computer, the locations of files and drives havent changed its just changing the database format. So its entirely possible that conversion will go correctly. Then when you backup the PSE 7 catalog and restore it on the new computer, backup/restore is just changing the paths of files, not converting from drive letters to serial numbers or changing database formats.
So thats why its quite possible (though not at all guaranteed) that converting to PSE 7 on the old computer and then doing backup/restore could produce different results different process, different results.
You have two other options, both of which might lose tags or other catalog information:
    1. On your new computer in its current state, reconnect all the files in the catalog to their new locations. Because they are marked as offline (assuming they actually are offline, based on the answers to my questions above), the Reconnect command will tell there is nothing to reconnect. However, you can force PSE to reconnect offline files using a trick described in step 4 of this FAQ:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Quickly_reconnecting_la rge
This may or may not work, because its likely that the buggy conversion process has left your catalog in an inconsistent, unknown state, and there may be other problems still lurking. Also, persuading PSE to quickly reconnect whole folder hierarchies of files takes some patience (as youll see in the FAQ).
    2. You can merge the PSE 5 catalog into a fresh PSE 7 catalog using this procedure: In PSE 5, save the tag definitions to a file, use File > Write Keyword Tag to write the keyword tags to the photos, copy the tag-definitions file and all the photos to the new computer using Windows Explorer, import the tag definitions into a fresh PSE 7 catalog, import the copied photos, and finally have PSE 7 automatically stack photos that used to be in version sets into stacks. These steps are described in detail in this FAQ:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs
This FAQ is written assuming the source catalog is in PSE 6 or 7, but I think it should also apply to a source catalog in PSE 5.
There are a number of problems with this. First, its time consuming. Second, youll lose version sets, stacks of photos that are *not* visually very similar or taken close together in time, collections (albums), and projects. The PSE File > Write Keyword Tag command has numerous bugs (in all versions), and youll most likely lose at least some, and perhaps much, of your tags, star ratings, captions, notes, dates/times, and GPS/map locations. If you have raw files in particular, youll very likely lose much or all of the metadata, but depending on the source of your JPGs and other file formats, those files could lose much information too. See the end of this FAQ for more details on the known bugs:

  • Can you burn dvd's in PSE 11 without purchasing more software?

I just upgraded from PSE 7 because I had problems with sharing and burning dvd's, now it seems that I can not burn a cd or dvd without buying more software.  What am I missing here?

The options in PSE have always been limited where it’s possible to create a data disk for viewing on computers or a back-up disk. Windows users can create a wmv file and then use that in the free Windows DVD maker to create a DVD which can be played on a TV but it’s a bit cumbersome. Ideally you should have purchased the combo Photoshop+Premiere Elements which is the best value, imho and which will give you lots of output options for DVD, Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook etc. I had a similar problem some years ago but managed to get my store to exchange PSE for PSE/PRE.

  • PSE 9 and MP4 files

Just thought that I should mention that PSE9 stops running when Elements is importing picture files and comes across an accidental MP4 extension. In Windows 7 it needed the Task Manager to restart. This user is stupid enough not to have checked that all the graphic files were in fact graphics!

You need to be sure which nikon camera, because although they all (most) are NEF files, they might require different versions of camera raw than the 6.5 you have in pse 9.
(pse 9 can only use up to camera 6.5)
Here's a list of cameras and the minimum required version of camera raw:

  • PSE 9 Nightmare

Sorry Adobe but downloading and installing PSE 9 has been a freaking nightmare. I needed two chat sessions to get the program downloaded. Then I find that it's a 7-Zip file that I had to get a program to extract the files. Now that I have the files extracted "setup.exe" starts and then quits without installing the program. It used to be so simple. Buy PSE, download PSE, install PSE. Why does it have to be so convoluted a process now?

Good question. If I had to guess, I'd guess it has something to do with security, but why it has to do with security is a mystery to me. I'm with you, why can't it be simple: buy PSE, download PSE, and then use PSE?

  • Moving PSE 10 organizer to PSE 11 organizer

I have been using PSE since PSE 7-I purchased 7, 10, and 11.  I am seriously looking for a better organizer solution.
My two catalogs worked fantastically well in the PSE 10 organizer - one click and just what I was looking for popped up.  Not now!  I am SOOOO done!
I repaired and optimized in PSE 10 - multiple times and still both catalogs (one with photos and one with digital scrapbooking supplies) refuse to convert properly.  The photo catalog did not convert many of my pictures and many are no longer tagged, along with missing tags.  The scrapbook catalog converted the Alaphabet folder and that's it and again, missing tags.
Searching the boards has been useless!
Any sane help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
There's no such bug. I mean navigation between files is the most operation one would do, how can that be buggy
You can double click an image to view it in Single Image View and use keyboard arrow keys to navigate left/right/up/down. Also double clicking an image which is fully zoomed out takes you back to previous zoom-in state where all thumbnails were visible.
You may also  try other views to arrange you media in grid - Thumbnails, Import Batch, Date View, Folder Location. These are available in 'Display' dropdown present on the top right corner of the application.
    Thanks

  • Difficulties opening PSE 12

I have been able to work with PSE 12 for the past few months, and all of a sudden, it stopped working. I cannot get the editor to open up whatsoever. I have attempted uninstalling it, but then I get error message 1306, saying that "another application has exclusive access to the file." I have attempted renaming SLstore and SLcache. I have attempted "Control, Alt, Shift" while starting the program and NOTHING WORKS. I also have PSE 7 on this computer, had never uninstalled just in case, and that is not working either.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hi,
The two versions (PSE 7 & PSE 12) should be independent of each other and should be able to coexist on the same system. If both have stopped working, I suspect that something has changed on your system recently.
Which operating system are you running on?
Can you think of any changes that you have made recently?
Hardware? (printers, graphics pads, any USB devices)
Software? (installed new software, updated or removed software)
