Recorded a Non-DV tape to DVD. Unable to play on iMac.

I want to edit a home movie I put onto DVD from a non-DV camcorder. But unlike DVD's that were made with video from a DV Camcorder, this DVD will not even play on the iMac. And I want to copy it into the iMac eventually for editing purposes, but beed to know how to get it to play on the iMac normally first. Any help is appreciated.

is this a videoDVD (=can be used in any DVDplayer) => don't hesitate to use the Search-Feature of this board, keywords 'import DVD'
or is this a dataDVD? the, you have to tell us the 'format', specificly the codec of that data, so NOT 'it's avi/mov', but wmv, sorenson, h263, mpeg1/2/4, whatever..
or, tell us the source of that 'video', e.g. what kind/tpye of camera ...

  • Burned DVDs Unable to Play

Just before Christmas I received a call from the grandson of a lady for whom I did a video. He said the DVD would not play in his DVD player and when he took it to a video production place they told him it was blank. (nitwits. . .it’s not blank) Originally I burned two DVDs of the video using iDVD 4. Later the woman requested three more copies which I did. I asked that he return one of the original DVDs (he said those played without problem) and the DVD that would not play.
This is what happened. I have three DVD players: an old one, a new one and a portable one. Both DVDs played without problem in the new one. Neither DVD played in the old one. The original DVD played fine in the portable, the DVD I burned later would not play in the portable.
I tested all three DVD players by playing a different DVD video I made a month or two before the one for this lady.. . . . . . .same equipment (FCX, LaCie external HD, etc), same brand disks, same everything. It played on all three just fine. In fact, I have never encountered this before except once when the people had an ancient DVD player.
I searched the iDVD site for an answer but there was nothing definitive. One person observed that “as DVD buner write speeds have increased, compatability problems with consumer DVD players has increased. . . .”
Has anyone else had this happen?

I’ve been on the iDVD support group (and related sites) for the past several days. I thought just getting quality disks would fix the problem. It didn't work and if I understand correctly, I cannot change the burn speed.
I got some Memorex Printable DVD-R 16x disks. I found I had archived my 11 minute project on DV tape so I was able to feed it into FCX and create a completely new iDVD project.
I burned the iDVD project using the Memorex disk. It failed. The message read:
"The recording device reported the media error: L-EC uncorrectable error. (0x11, 0x05)"
I went into the console log via the System Profiler. Found this info regarding the failed burn:
    iDVD: Burning to PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 A227 via ATAP1.
iDVD: Requested burn speed was max, actual burn speed is 7x.
iDVD: Burn started, Mon Jan 30 23:47:28 2006
iDVD: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
    iDVD: Write (10), block: 800, count:32 ->3/11/05 Medium Error, L-EC uncorrectable error
iDVD: Burn failed, Mon Jan 30 23:47:56 2006
iDVD: Burn sense: 3/11/05 Medium Error, L-EC uncorrectable error
iDVD: Burn error: 0x80020060 The device drained its butter without burn underrun protection.
It's mostly Greek to me except that the burn failed. (That it did!)
Then I burned the same iDVD project to a K-Hypermedia DVD-R 4x disk. Have used these disks in the past with no problem at all, but they are not printable labels. It burned without problem, plays fine on the iMac and three other DVD players. The following is the information on the console log about this successful burn:
DVD: Burning to PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 A227 via ATAPI.
iDVD: Requested burn speed was max, actual burn speed is 7x.
iDVD: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled.
iDVD: Burn finished, Thur Feb 2 13:09:46 2006
My goal here is to be able to burn to disks with printable labels. I’ve ordered some Verbatim DVD-R printable 4x disks.
Could the 16x on the Memorex have caused the fail?

  • DVD will not play on iMac in Bootcamp using Windows 8

I am trying to play a DVD in Windows 8 being run with Bootcamp on my iMac (OSX 10.9). The DVD will not autoplay in Windows. You can see the DVD in the folder view, but can only access the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, not the actual playable DVD. Have tried playing it through the folder view as well as Windows Media also to no avail. Booted down Windows and into Mac OS, and the DVD autoplays just fine. How can I get it to play in Windows mode, as the software we are running for a certain program needs to be accessed constantly before and after the DVD needs to play?

tried the vlc player it's free to download and works better then other players really

  • Faulty Transitions (green screen) in burned DVD and no play on iMac

I made my first DVD with iDVD '08 this week and initially all seemed to be OK.
It contains 7 slide shows and 7 movies, total size 4.02 GB.
The problems I have since found are are :-
    1. The DVD will not play in my iMac 24", the menus judder or lock up, and the movies judder and skip. When I play the DVD in a real DVD player the menus and movies are fine.
    2. On the DVD player the slide shows are OK to start with, having the correct 'Dissolve' transition between sides. The problem is that after about 30 slides the transition is replaced by a green screen between slides.
When I view the DVD in iDVD it works OK, but not when burned.
I also exported a disc image and that also has the same transition issues, so it looks like iDVD is outputting faulty files.
I redid my DVD in a different theme and removed the slide transitions which reduced the DVD to less than 2GB, it seems to work OK now, but I would like to use transitions at some point!
    Ian

    Ian,
I made a project with only one "drop zone" slideshow by pulling 99 pictures from the media iPhoto window with dissolve transitions.
It failed with about a dozen green screen transitions in the end of the slide show.
I remove one picture reducing the count to 98.
It was good. No green screen transitions.
I saved as .img to eliminate disc problems.
I repeated the test for several themes especially 7.0s which others have found to be problems.
I tested all qualities and both ratios.
With my 20"iMac 99 pictures in one slide show fail, 98 and less work.
I don't understand why your project with slide shows of less than 98 pictures is not working.
Your total project was relatively large and could be a memory error. I suggest testing a smaller project, it won't drive you so crazy waiting an hour or more for each processing cycle.
There are certainly other concerns such as free disc space and RAM etc, and before the latest updates push from iPhoto to iDVD produced different results than pull to iDVD from iPhoto, etc.
History: the 99 limit was the reality that many DVD player will buffer overflow at more than 99 chapters (each picture is seen as a chapter). The original iDVD limited each slide show to 99.
Recent releases allowed as many pictures in one slide show 'drop zone' as desired.
I have been limiting myself to 99 so they will play on most DVD players.
The 99 number and info you quoted from Apple guidelines I find to now be wrong.
    They have a bug.
I suggest sending a bug report from iDVD.
I'm an engineer and I've been messing with this for a week trying to get a project out.
    Hope this helps
    Best wishes

  • Dvd won't play in iMac

I just burned a DVD of iPhoto slide show using idvd on my iMac but the same dvd isn't recognized by my iMac ("dvd you inserted is not recognized by this computer") and it wouldn't play. Neither does it play ANY DVD from any source.
    HELP Please!!!!! Thank you.

The first thing to do is get a DVD cleaning disk and use it; your problem is PROBABLY just dust over the optical system of the drive. Let us know if that makes everything OK.

  • Recording on DVD - "Unable to recover TOC" error

    Hi all
Whenever I try to record on a DVD a face "Unable to recover TOC"
I've tried to change the recording speed but no use.
When I go to DVD properties and click on enable recording it does not recognize the DVD or any other CD in the drive.
    Please some help

    Hi,
    1. What software do use to burn cd/dvd disks? Try to use Nero, Ashampoo burning studio, Alcohol CD and DVD Burning Software,
    2. Then, I advise you to use high quality medias as TDK or Verbatim.
    3
Go to device manager and remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Reboot the notebook and wait until the CD/DVD drive would appear again
If you still have problems, maybe there is a problem with your cd/dvdrom

  • I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R but will not play on my MacBook Pro. I have already recorded multiple DVDs. How can I get it to play on my Mac?

"I recorded VCR tape onto DVD-R"
    How? Using what equipment/software?
"The DVD  plays on the device on which it was recorded."
Just a guess: You're using a VCR-DVD combo recorder. DVDs produced in this way will play on the device that made them, but won't play on anything else until they're "finalized." In fact, Macs will recognize unfinalized DVDs as blank discs until the discs are finalized. Check the manual that came with the recording device for instructions.

  • DVR620 won't dub from tape to dvd

We bought at DVR620 over a year ago with the express purpose of recording old tapes to dvd.  The several times since then we've tried to do this and been unsuccessful. First, you press the setup menu, go to General Setting, press enter and NOTHING happens.  You can't enter diddly squat.  Oh, I know my remote works since I can use the up and down arrows on it to move vrom General Setting to Timer Programming, etc. but you can't enter any of these selections. I've tried puttting in a blank dvd-r, pressing dubbing with a tape in it, we get a red circle with a line through it.  I've done this in dvd and vcr mode with the tape playing and paused both.  This does not work. I've pressed the record button, put the tape in, pressed pause once it's started playing.  This did not work.  I've had the tape and dvd in both, pressed record, pressed play then pause on the vcr and nothing happens.  I do have several messed up dvds though. I did notice that if I press dubbing with the record slot taped over on the tape it instantly starts trying to record from the dvd to the tape though.  This has put blank spots on a tape now.  I have found no way to change the dubbing mode from dvd->tape to tape->dvd. At this point, I'm very frustrated.  Something's not right with this unit or the instructions are simply wrong or both.  Any help appreciated.

Be sure you have no DVD inserted, and no VHS tape inserted. Although this shouldn't matter, as long as you're not recording or playing back, let's be sure none are even inserted. When you press SETUP on the remote, and the Setup menu appears, you see General Setting, Timer Programming, Title List, and DVD Menu. You should see that Title List is in light blue and is therefore "grayed out" so it can't be selected. When you press the down arrow on the remote to move to Timer Programming, do you see that General Setting is also grayed out? If it is, that is the reason you can't press enter and then get the General Setting submenu. If the General Setting text is white, you should be able to press ENTER or the right arrow to go to the General Setting submenu. The changing of DVD->VCR to VCR->DVD dubbing mode is done by General Setting->Recording->Dubbing Mode and then selecting VCR->DVD. If General Setting is grayed out, such that it can't be selected, and you have no DVD and no VHS inserted in the DVR620, I'm not sure why that would be. In that case, you can try unplugging it for about 30 minutes and then plugging it back in to see if it resets itself. I have tested this with my DVR620 and only when the DVD or VHS is playing do I get the red circle when I press SETUP. I don't see the Setup menu at all in that case.

  • Unable to play recorded video using BB multimedia api in other platform

    Hi all,
I am new to Blackberry application development. The application I am developing it is required to record a video using multimedia api.
    I am using
    video encoding : MPEG-4
    audio encoding : AMR

    Device using Curve 8250
It is the same encoding combination BB curve use to record a video from default recorder.
    _player = Manager
    .createPlayer("capture://video?encoding=video/3gpp&width=320&height=240&fps=12&video_codec=MPEG-4&audio_codec=AMR");
After recording it from my application I am able to play the video in vlc even in BB devices. But when I am trying toplay in android,J2ME and iPhone platform. It is unable to play the video..Can anybody help me out in this regard.
I am really in trouble. I need your help .
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Angan

In my experience if windows media player plays it(the mpeg4), it will not be compatiable with quicktime. At least if you do not go installing the codecs to read ISO mpeg 4 (.mp4 is the standard extension that quicktime puts on the files). Another thing to check is if you are creating ISO compliant files. The mpeg4s that windows media reads by default are not ISO compliant. You also need to keep in mind that Quicktime is a simple profile mp4 and main profile mp4 player (although not all b frames are compatable with quicktime). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicktime for a basic overview of the profile support. I suggest that you try playing the media with free softwares such as vlc http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html and check that the format and codecs are correct. Although they will play non standard files they will list the codecs in use (make sure that you are using ISO compliant standards as you can put more than MPEG 4 in mp4).

  • From Low Resolution Recording to High Resolution SVCD or DVD

I am wondering, if I record from a VHS tape at the lowest resolution onto my hard drive, then use WinProducer/Wincoder 2.0 (bundled together now) to convert it to a higher DVD quality resolution and burn it to a CD, will the quality be at least near what it would have been had I have recorded it as a high resolution file to begin with?
I thank any responses in advance.

    hplsbyufan
The point of recording in low resolution is that it takes less data than high resolution. So if you save something in low resolution you have lost the extra data that was needed to describe the images in more detail.
By way of analogy, if I describe the plot of a film I have just seen (low resolution) you cannot use that description to retrieve the detail of each scene (high resolution).
So, unfortunately you cannot get a higher resolution than that in which you originally recorded it.
    Sorry
    Ross

  • How can I view DVD's that I dubbed from old vhs tapes?  I finalized them and can play on other DVD players but not my IMac.  Is there a specific program?

I dubbed DVD's from old VHS tapes.  I finalized them and can play tehm on differant DVD players, but on my IMac I can't play them.  Ultimately I want to create home movies with pics, but how can I play the DVD's?

A DVD is a DVD, unless it's been authored in a non-standard way. When you insert it in your Mac, do you at least see the disk appear on the desktop? Does it have a VIDEO_TS folder in it, containing various files?
If you open DVD Player manually (from the Applications folder), does it see it and start playing? If not, try downloading VLC (free) and see if that works.

Thanks for the help, and sorry my english writing...

You'd need to tell us what kind of film and cameras you have. I think you'll need to buy some equipment to do that.
An alternative is to send your film to a place like Integrated Imaging and they could transfer it to DVD or another suitable format for iMovie.

  • How to convert VCR Tape to DVD on MACbook Pro?

Any insight into how to convert VCR tapes to DVD on Macbook Pro would be much appreciated!

The first question is:  how to get video into your Mac?
My answer is:  use a DV camcorder as a translator.  Most Canons and Sonys do this.  Here are some general steps:
    1.  connect the video and audio outputs of your VCR to the input jacks of the camcorder.  (If the video is on an S-video jack instead of the conventional yellow phono jack, it will be a little bit better quality.)
    2.  Using your camcorder's menu, set it to "AV IN->DV OUT".  This will vary according to the model of your DVCAM.  One hint:  all camcorders have a 3-position camera/off/play(vcr) switch.  In this application, most of them use the PLAY position.
    3.  Connect the DV out of the camcorder to a firewire port on the Mac.  This requires the cable that comes with the camera...it's a mini-firewire on one end, and a regular firewire 400 on the other.  (If your Mac has only a FW 800 jack, you may need another adapter.)
    4.  Turn on the DVCAM.  Usually, iMovie will automatically open and be ready to record...if not, start it.
    5.  Hit PLAY on the VHS machine.  You should see the video in the iMovie window.  When you see what you want to save, press iMovie's button to start recording.  You're free to edit the movie in any way you want.
When you have enough for a DVD, save it and use iDVD to burn a disc.
Alternatively, if you want to save a step, you can skip the iMovie step and just open up iDVD and select the feature...I forget the exact name...but it's like "Quick Movie" that will just save it as one stream.
