Rendering Frame Range

I was rendering out a movie that crashed at the 40 minute mark.
The part of the movie that rendered so far still plays back fine in a media player.. and since it took four hours, I don't want to have to re-render the frames that are already rendered... it is fine if I need to start a new video file.
Question: how do I start a render in the middle of a movie composition (frame range)?
I can't find the information online or in help.

  • Animated Gif - Save for web not showing full frame range

    Hey,
I'm trying to export an animated gif with 52 frames - I'm using the timeline in CS6, it's exported correctly in the past but when I try and save for web only a seemingly arbitrary number of rames appear in the animation. With no clear route to rectify this, I've tried to affect the outcome by simply moving things around on the timeline.
I've had a variety of frame ranges (and frames) numbering between 2 and 6 frames, far off my 52 target. It's a simple image and equally simple transition to keep filesize down but I'm completely bamboozled by this. It looks like a bug but any advice I could get would be much appreciated.

If it worked in the past with CS6 try resetting your CS6 Photoshop Preferences.  If you still have the problem after that.  Up load the PSD file to a server and post a link to it.

  • Multi resolution / frame range / coded onlining

    Hi Everyone
So I'm going to online a HD 1080 29.97 documentary. However there are about 10 different video formats, some RED, even some SD! This is my plan, and i want to see if it makes sense to the forum. Time is also an issue.
    - Delivery will be a ProRes 422 HQ Quicktime that will be mastered to HDSR for final delivery
    - Unfortunately, most of the footage is 23.98, bu the broadcaster demands 29.97
    - So I'm just going to lay out a 1080 29.97 ProRes HQ sequence in FCP and export that. i figured the 2332 pulldown from 23.98 to 29.97 should be fine, no need for Compressor or anything?
    - Also figured all the different video codecs, HDV, DVCProHD etc being exported as ProResHQ would be okay?
Does this seem ok or am I way off base? I'm used to working with ONE format. What I'm hoping here is the frame range converting upwards and the video converting to ProRes can all be handled at once by FCP. But not if quality suffers

How will this be onlined and color corrected? Mixing frame sizes is decent, but not the best. The best thing to do would be to upscale the SD to HD via hardware, like a Terranex or a good HD Capture card (Kona LHi, Matrox MXO2)...hardware upscaling is always better than software. Or, use Compressor to upscale, and set all the frame controls on BEST. Yes, this will take a while. But, if you only want to do this to the footage in the cut, that will save tons of time.
i figured the 2332 pulldown from 23.98 to 29.97 should be fine, no need for Compressor or anything?
Bad assumption. FCP doesn't do pulldown properly. It does 2:2:2:4, not 2:3:3:2. No, for this you need to use Compressor.
Also figured all the different video codecs, HDV, DVCProHD etc being exported as ProResHQ would be okay?
    That is a fine assumption.
But it is always best to convert the footage to one format BEFORE you edit. Now you have to take a long time sorting all of this out, and fixing this cut, before you output and online. And it will be complicated.

  • How do I make precise frame range deletions in the middle of project clip?

I need to make a precise deletion of frames 8:55:15 to 8:56:12 in the middle of my project video clip.
Problem: The trimmer won't do it because it keeps the very selection which I want to delete, while deleting the frames before and after my selection range.
Problem: When in my project, while the red pointer tells me exactly where I am in my clip (when I select Playhead Information in View), the problem is that I have no information to tell me the exact location of the right and left selection handles so I can precisely select 8:55:15 and 8:56:12 of my clip for deletion. I press the Option key and the pointer moves to the beginning or end of the clip, not to one end handles of the selection.
In iMovie 3 when the selection handles are moved I get information as to exactly where each handle rests in terms of time or frames for easy deletion of the exact selection I want to remove.
Can iMovie 08 make precise frame range deletions somewhere in the middle of a project clip?
    Thank you.

Problem: The trimmer won't do it because it keeps the very selection which I want to delete, while deleting the frames before and after my selection range.
Don't use it. It is for trimming the ends from the clip selection.
Can iMovie 08 make precise frame range deletions somewhere in the middle of a project clip?
Yes. The basic strategy is to expand the project to its maximum scale (0.5 sec) and to then select the range of frames you wish to to edit. Start by slowly dragging the playhead across the clip in the area you wish to access. The time in white below the window will display the exact (minute:) second: and frame across which you are skimming, as well as display the frame itself in both the thumbnail and the preview screens. (NOTE: I prefer visual selection of the frames rather than using a time reference since such references may change as transitions and titles are added.) When you locate the first frame you wish to delete, press the mouse to select it. While holding down the mouse, continue to scrub the clip to locate the last frame you wish to delete. When you locate it, release the mouse. At this point you can either split the clip and keep/delet the sub-segments as needed or delete the selected range using the "Delete Selection" or "Cut" Edit menu options.
Another method would be to select the approximate range you wish to edit in the middle of the clip and then grab and drag the beginning and ending "handles" to adjust the exact start and stop frames for the "Selected" range. In this case, the times ate the bottom of the "Project" window represent the "in" and "out" points for the range of frames currently selected. Once again, I prefer to select the in and out points visually as I scrub. Also, for me, this two-stage adjustment approach seems quicker and easier for my approach to editing.
The problem is that the playhead refers to the red pointer, thus I can get an exact location of the pointer in terms of time and frame, but NOT a location of the selection handles.
Okay, I see what you mean. However, if you use the two-stange method described above, the point where you press the mouse to mark the begin handle of the selected range is the "begin handle". Same holds true for the release point (playhead time time) for the stop handle.
Is there some way I can line up the pointer exactly with the location of the right or left handle then use Option key and Left/Right arrow keys to move the handles to my exact range frame by frame?
Not really at the same time. iMovie does allow you to set the exact start point and will tell you when you have reached the exact number of seconds and frames for the range you wish to delete. Adding the two together does give you the exact time of the end of the range in seconds and frames.

  • "unable to acquire rendered frame" error message with AE CS6 Motion Tracker

    Hi Everyone,
I am having issues with the built in tracking software in After Effects CS6. Everytime I hit "analyze" I receive the error message "unable to acquire rendered frame" or it simply remains at "0% (frame 1 of 70)". Sometimes I get the message "unable to obtain dynamiclink server connection". I've tried different types of footage, re-started, re-installed the software, deleted (emptied) the database and caches, started a fresh composition, and even did a fresh install of OSX but nothing works. Any ideas? I've searched a lot of forums on this and I've seen the problem in similiar situations (same error message with Warp Stabilizer analysis) but nobody seem to have found any resolution.
I'm running AfterEffects CS6 on Mac OS 10.8.
Processor  2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB
    Downloaded all the latest updates.
Done all the usual emptying of caches, repaired disk permissions, re-installation of software, etc.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

What firewall/antivirus software are you using?
After Effects communicates with the background camera tracker process using TCP, and some overly aggressive firewall/antivirus software can block this communication. That may be the problem in your case.

  • Warp Stabilizer error: Unable to acquire rendered frame

    Hi,
I am trying to apply Warp Stabilizer to a clip. Analyze process starts but then halts after 15-20 frames and a pop-up appears "Unable to acquire rendered frame".
I have previously used Warp without any hitches.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Richard

I too get this, sometimes not and the analyze just drops without a word, but most of the time I get the error. I tried on material such as: Red r3d, uncompressed fullHD/SD, mp4, canon 7D etc. pretty much all formats there is, so there isn't a problem with what type of files or what GOP structure it got. I cannot solve this even by creating a new project or reboot, I even reinstalled AE and the Matrox drivers, I tried unplugging the MXO2 mini but got the same result, so I'm pretty much done testing, I tried everything I can think of. I allocated RAM differently, shut of multiprocessing, enabled it, more RAM to few cores and then less RAM to more cores, increased cashe, disabled it.
Sometimes when I let the footage play out with RAM preview, the analyze gets to the end in the background, but whenever I just let it work for itself it drops.
So I tried everything and the error still persist. What should I do?

  • Frame Range of footage used

    Hi guys,
I edited 3 Minutes of CGI Animation (PreViz) that is about to be rendered in final quality (the CGIs).
Due to the editing a lot of the "footage" got cut away or overlapped by other footage. For saving rendertime when rendering the CGIs I only want to render the specific areas of the footage that are used in my timeline.
Is there any way to display the range of the footage that got used?
    Let´s say:
"Footage 1: Duration of 150 frames. Used in timeline from frame 8 to frame 38"
(0 = frame 0 of the specific footage. Not indicated as "frame number of timeline".
Any way to get that info?
I tried saving and reading the .edl, but there should be an easier way?
Would save me hours of render time.

    Hi,
You can turn on Video Usage and Audio Usage in the Metadata Display of the Project Window.
Then go to the clip in the Project Window you want to find on the timeline and click on the small triangle under Video usage option to see the usage of that particular clip.
    Thank you,
    Mohd. Naseem

  • AE changing aspect ratio of rendered frames

I'm rendering .png frames at NTSC DV, 720x480, Pixel aspect 0.9.  My composition settings in AE are set to the same, however, when I import the frames they are listed as 720x480 (1.11).  When viewed in the composition window the frames extend past the viewable area on both sides.  Using AE 7.0.
Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This is going to sound weird but it's the truth. The aspect ratio doesn't change the pixels. Aspect ratio only sets the interpretation - or tells a video app how to  make those pixels fit in a desired space on a scan line. It's a lot like the PPI tag added to images intended for print. The tag has nothing to do with the actual pixels.
That said, if you can't find a setting for choosing pixel aspect ratio when you setup the output module and the render settings, then the PAR tag won't be added to the render. AE, or your NLE will then take a look at the frame size and make a guess as to PAR and field order. The guess may be wrong. If it is, all you have to do is go into the interpretation settings and change them.
I'd guess you're rendering to a DV codec. If so, there's no PAR tag so all you have to do is reset the interpretation. The same goes for Premiere or FCP or Vegas or any other NLE. Sometimes DV footage gets interpreted as the wrong PAR.
    Hope this helps.

  • IDVD rendering, frame rate and pixellation

I have a number of MPEG-4 movies which I handbraked from DVDs. As standalone files, these play in Quicktime player fluidly and clearly at real time - all looking fine. I've imported them into iMovie to edit bits of each which I didn't want: the iMovie preview still plays these looking good. Add transitions and chapters and save project.
I then make an iDVD project, drag the iMovie file (the one with the star) into it and it works fine, automatically displaying the correct chapters and in preview, it still looks fine. I leave it overnight to Burn DVD (which renders each movie file etc)., and the the DVD plays in my DVD player machine BUT each file is more pixellated than the original PLUS it seems to have dropped the number of frames per second. This means that although the audio and video are in synch and realtime, it looks slowed down.
My iDVD settings are for Best Performance. The project is 6GB and I used a double layer 8.5GB disc. Also set to PAL which is correct for the UK.
I have tried many methods to make this disc. Why are these movies compressed again? There doesn't seem a need to compress them. Why is the frame rate not maintained when there is plenty of room on disc to avoid compression?
All I want to do is make a viewable DVD of a collection of movies without this quality fall-off!
Is it just a simple matter of saving as disc image and burning at a slower rate (how do you do that anyway?). If so, what's the point of this software?

    17 PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

DVDs are heavily compressed MPEG-2 files.
If you rip a DVD using Handbrake, it will expand the MPEG-2 file into an uncompressed video file, then compress it on the fly to MPEG-4. Also, it will either retain the original 24 or 25 or 29.97 FPS frame rate, or will transcode to 25 FPS (PAL).
If you then import the MPEG-4 file into iDVD, it will take the MPEG-4 clip, uncompress it, then squeeze it back to MPEG-2, and because iDVD is intended for encoding DVDs of (especially) DV-25 material, it will transcode the frame rate to 25 FPS (PAL).
What you have done there is to take a file compressed with a lossy compression scheme, recompress it with an even lossier compression scheme, then recompress it a third time to the original compression scheme (but probably a different bit rate).
In digital video, compression artifacts (noise, blockiness, etc.) become visible with the initial compression stage. Even DV-25, which is compressed 5:1 with an adaptive sampling method, uses a 1-frame GOP (all I-frames) and is optimized for editing and post-processing, will show artifacts, especially "mosquito noise". Artifacting is worse in MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, especially as the GOP length gets longer, caused by prediction errors in trying to re-create data that isn't really there. If you take this compressed MPEG-2 image, re create it, then compress it again, you will add new artifacting to the already trashy looking picture. Very quickly your picture will degrade into something significantly worse than VHS as you add compression stages. By the time you do that third compression, going MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 and back to MPEG-2, you're lucky if you have a recognizable picture at all.
If you are hacking up a DVD and you want to maintain quality, then iDVD is not the proper tool to use. Ideally you should limit yourself to editing on the GOP borders (if you're lucky, every scene starts with an I-frame...) so that you can snag a chunk of the original MPEG-2 stream and drop it unaltered into your new project. You could then burn the un-re-re-recompressed DVD compliant MPEG-2 stream back to the disc with something like Toast or Sizzle.

  • Premiere actually rendered "Frame not analyzed for stabilization; press analyze" on the actual video?!

When you put the Warp Stabilizer on some footage, it will ask you to analyze the footage so that it can stabilize it.
Some of my clips, apparently, went unanalyzed and when I rendered my video (which took several hours), my rendered footage actually has the "Frame not analyzed for stabilization; press analyze" blue warning in it. The warning rendered as if it were part of the film itself.
Is this supposed to happen? This is truly shocking.
Moreover, I would have expected that the render process would have gone through and analyzed all the footage and applying all the effects before outputting the final product.

  • Premiere CC is not importing full frame range of .mov

I am working in a custom project. 30fps (progressive). My quicktimes begin at frame 0. When I look at the files in quicktime, the frames are there. When I import the files into premiere CC. the first 2 frames are not viewable and my imported clip begins at frame 2. Is this a settings thing?

So...if i recompress my .mov (h.264 compressed) files keyframing every frame, Premiere sees the first 2 frames of the clip... that said, I would prefer not rebatch all these clips as this is a pretty big project and would require quite a bit of time... so if anyone has any ideas how to get around this, it would be very helpful.

  • IMovie after rendering frames go black and disappear

I didnt have this problem a week ago, but now, after I finished rendering second level effects like Pinhole or Gamma, the entire selection disappears..
    any suggestions?!
    thanks

    Hi
Many possible origins. Five most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc is less than 10Gb
    • Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 4, Mac OS X.4.10 AND QuickTime 7.2 - is OK

  • Rendering frames for Iphone, problem.

Hi, is it possible to render a sequence - in this case frames-  to .mp4, .mov or M4v at the resolution 320 X 480. I need the lowest file size possible for the video, but I'm having proplems in Premiere (CS4) selecting that image size in any of those formats.
It's for the ipod/iphone, the presets in CS4 aren't any use for what I'm trying to do. Thanks for any help.

  • Stalling:Error in background rendering so switching to foreground rendering after 0 frames completed

Our facility is running AE CS6 ver 11.0.0.378 on 8 core Mac Pros with 32 Gb ram running OSX10.6.8
using Thinkbox Deadline 5.2 for distributed rendering to other 8 Core Mac Pros with 32 Gb ram.
The issue is that we are in crunch mode trying to deliver 4K comps (soon to be 8k comps) and we are experience substantial
delays 10-20 minutes after the AERENDER starts, but before it starts doing any fruitful rendering.
We are reading from and writing to Quicktime movie files (which normally works just fine for us) and thus the entire frame range needs
to get computed on a single host.
The symptom is that many comp jobs (but not all) stall for a while with no apparent actibity before spitting this messgage, but then happily
and swiftly complete each frame in a second or less with no errors:
0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:   There is an error in background rendering so switching to foreground rendering after 0 frames completed out of total 576 frames.
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00001 (1): 20 Min, 16 Sec
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00002 (2): 1 Seconds
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00003 (3): 0 Seconds
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00004 (4): 1 Seconds
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00005 (5): 2 Seconds
    0: STDOUT: PROGRESS:  00006 (6): 1 Seconds
Given that the delay, seems to be related to the number of frames (350 frames creates a 10 min stall and 576 frames creates a 20 minute stall), it seems like it's trying to do something for every frame in background mode, before it gives up and does them quickly
in foreground mode. During this time, there doesn't seem to be any signficant CPU or Network or IO activity. I looked for command line args that might force AERENDER to foreground mode, but didn't find anything.

We're under the gun to get this production delivered, and these delays are killing us. I worry when we switch to 8K comps
that the "fruitless delay time"  will just get longer.
I'm currently trying to correlate the plug-in assortments in effect for the shots that exhibit this behaviour. Clearly in "foreground mode" the machines are capable of rendering the shot quickly.   We've speculated, that posibly some plugins may be GPU or OpenGL accelerated (these machines have ATI Radeon HD 5770 cards) despite the fact that AERENDER probably doesn't require special graphics cards).
Anyone have any ideas, especially if there is some way for force the foreground mode from the start?
    Regards,
    Jay Production IT Support.

Just to follow up, Our compositing supervisor was still convinced that running with MP was the way to go, so I worked
with him to run some benchmarks on medium and heavy shots that we determinied would trigger the issue in -MP mode.
The test scene was about 50 frames in length, and we ran it on the same hosts with -MP on and -MP off, and also ran a
version of bundled frames (10 frames per host/task) and another where we did all 50 frames on a single host (with and without MP).
Interestingly, in every scenerio of these 4 cases, the version with -MP on, was 2-15% faster (despite the 10-11 minute delay at the start in MP mode).
His conclusion was it's still faster with -MP mode ON, and requested that I continue to explore for patches or theories how we might get around the delay.

  • How to select a range of frames

Is there any way to select a range of frames in Scout beyond dragging the little handles in the "Frame timeline window" or using "Ctrl-A" to select all?
For a large trace having to drag the handles is very tedious if it's across a minute's worth of frames, but we don't want to select them all.
What we're looking for is like the "Goto Frame" option in the menu, but to select a start and end frame that way.  Not just jump to the frame.
Or the ability to click in the Frame timeline window to set the start/end frame, without grabbing and dragging a handle (which may be way off screen).
Is there some way to do this?
Or is there any way to select a frame range in the overall frame summary window above the timeline?
    Thanks,
    Doug

In the frame timeline, you can hold down the Shift key and click, to change the end-frame of the selection. You can also click and drag to select multiple frames.
