Repair installation halts at "Preparing Target Volume"

I have a client's G3 tower that was running Jaguar that stopped booting. It would boot to the Apple screen and the little "progress wheel" at the bottom would just keep going and going for hours.
She did not have her original software so she bought a copy of Panther off Ebay.
Upon booting from the Panther CD, I ran the disk utility and fixed all problems. When I try to to the upgrade install, it detects 10.2 on the drive. The entire process seems to halt at the "Preparing Target Volume" spot. The machine is not frozen, per se...every once in a while there might be hard drive movement, but it has been stuck at this spot for as long as 12 hours at a time.
I have:
changed the IDE cable
changed the RAM
placed the hard drive in an almost identical G3 tower
None of what I have done so far has solved anything. Any and all help is appreciated in advance.

If the Panther installer you have is on gray labeled CDs, then it is an OEM version intended for a specific Mac model. It will not work on that computer. You need the standard retail version of Panther which consists of three CDs with black labels and a large gray "X" plus a fourth CD containing the installer for XTools.
It sounds, also, as if the hard drive needs to be reformatted.

  • Target Volume Error

I have tried to install my software updates, but everytime I try it gets to the point "Preparing Target Volume" and then it encounters an error and can't finish the install.
I have run the Hardware Test, and it said that everything was fine. I'm at a loss for what to do next.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

    McQuilter:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Panther install set consists of three CDs.
If you keep getting errors it could the install disks themselve, or possibly a hardware problem. To eliminate the Hardware problem boot from your Apple Hardware Test disk holding down the "C" key, and run the test.
If everything checks out fine, boot from the install disk, go to the installer menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel and First Aid in the right panel. Run Repair Disk Permissions. Then run Repair Disk. If DU finds no errors quit DU and open installer.
If DU finds errors, click Repair again and again until no errors are found. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • CS6 Installer halts when installing Adobe Help

CS6 Creative Suite Design & Web Premium Trial downloads, extracts, but the installer halts when it hits "Currently Installing Adobe Help", and the install time keeps increasing indefinitely. I have tried over and over, re-downloading, using the direct download links, running the creative suite cleaner, the Adobe Support tool, restarting my computer, etc. etc. etc. It does this same thing when I have tried to install Dreamweaver CS6 on its own, but I was able to download & install Lightroom 4 with no problems whatsoever. What can I do at this point?

I too am having this problem, and killing InstallAdobeHelp.exe DOES seem to allow the installer to continue. Thank you for that tip, Dan!

    I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    I had CS4 & CS5 Master Collection installed (non-trial)
I tried removing both, with no luck.
I updated Download Manager and Adobe Air just previous to installing.
I have tried restarting, installing with and without internet access/activation (shouldn't really matter) - Attempted installation about 6 times.
Running InstallAdobeHelp from command line using the same call the installer does (InstallAdobeHelp.exe CommandLine: appVersion=4.0.244 appId=chc pubId=4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1 installerArg1=-silent installerArg2=-eulaAccepted installerArg3=-programMenu installerArg4=AdobeHelp.air) Gives the same result - an empty window appears and never goes away.
Canceling the installer doesn't kill InstallAdobeHelp.exe, it will keep running in the background until killed - even if the installer is forcefully stopped, and will even run 4 or 5 InstallAdobeHelp.exe processes at the same time, if you keep trying to install.
Big idea: I saw something in the log about already having AdobeHelp 1.0.0.0 installed (Probably from CS4/5?) I'm guessing this is causing the conflict:

  • What to do about Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only

This is a weird story. My wife has a PowerBook G4/1.33 GHz that she uses in clamshell mode with a 20" Cinema Display. One day under OS X 10.5.6, her Time Machine backups (to a networked 500 GB Time Capsule) failed with the error: Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only. So I upgraded her to 10.5.7 and erased the sparseimage file, starting a new Time Machine backup. And it just happened again. Any idea how this sort of problem arises? My wife was doing something at her computer when the Time Machine error occurred.
Please don't advise us to upgrade to 10.5.8, because her PowerBook freezes not infrequently with any OS later than 10.5.6, and I was just about to downgrade her from 10.5.7 to 10.5.6.

Try repairing the sparse bundle, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
I've tried this before, but it can't be repaired, because it can't be mounted.
Any idea how this sort of problem arises? My wife was doing something at her computer when the Time Machine error occurred.
One possibility is, the HD in the Time Capsule is beginning to fail (all HDs fail, sooner or later).
I'm backing up to my own sparseimage bundle just fine.
Please don't advise us to upgrade to 10.5.8, because her PowerBook freezes not infrequently with any OS later than 10.5.6, and I was just about to downgrade her from 10.5.7 to 10.5.6.
Those two things may be related. Whatever's going wrong may very well be what's corrupting the backups.
I'd recommend finding out what's wrong with the Powerbook. It's impossible to tell, of course, but that may be the root of the problem.
There's a problem with PowerBooks and Cinema Displays. I've posted a lot about this. Even after a motherboard replacement, my PowerBook G4/1.67 GHz had freezes, and eventually Apple gave me a MacBook Pro, but I think there's a failure involving hardware/software design.
    If you haven't yet, I'd start by dong a +*Verify Disk+* on it's internal HD (also per #A5);
    That checks out fine.
if there are no errors, or they're fixed and the problem continues, run the +Apple Hardware Test+ from the disc that came with the Mac. (One of the discs should have that, and instructions for running it, printed in tiny type on the label).
If still no help, I'd be inclined to do an +Archive & Install, preserving users & settings,+ of Leopard, then download & install the appropriate "combo" update. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate (change the last "8" to the desired number). Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • Windows repair installation Pavilions a6720y Windows Vista 64 bit

Can you provide a Windows Repair Installation Disc?
I recently had a serious PC problem. I knew that I would have to hand my PC over to someone and selected a Local Technical Specialists (Geek Squad) who diagnosed it as a crashed main HD, installed a new Drive and reinstalled the OS from recovery disks provided by HP.
I personally had to reinstall many programs and settings. I needed specialist assistance to reestablish my home network that did work before the crash with the same hardware but not after.
My Main PC is a desktop:
    HP Pavillian,
    Model a6720y,
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit,
    6GB Physical Memory,
connected to a DSL Modem via Ethernet connection.
My second PC is a Dell Pavillion B130 Laptop, Windows XP
DSL Modem provided by Verizon, is a WestTell modem.
I have an External 1 TB HD from HP, a HP HD3000, Ser # TH1B32Y047
The System Recovery was performed with discs that I received from HP. System Recovery, Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, HP505283-001, Build ID 91ANv6PrA1.
I am contacting you because I believe that something went wrong with the reinstallation or there was more that should have been done after the initial Reinstall.
Within hours of bringing the PC home, I discovered that Windows Media Player was not working. I contacted the local support organization. They advised that yes there was a problem with Windows Media Player and downloaded an alternate program for playing Videos, VLC.
After installing several 3rd party program that were Video DVD maker Utilities, I started to have problems that did not exist before the reinstall. This is of course with the same hardware except for the new Internal HD.
I contacted the local support because I was having serious problems reestablishing my at home local network. I was informed that there were some serious Vista problems.
Can you comment on the above?
Can you provide a Windows Repair Installation Disc?
My PC is out of warranty but I did purchase and renew that HP Care Pack Support Service. That may also have expired. My last renewal that I can find was Tran # CA03207588-0001.
Your response to the above, especially your advice on a Windows Repair would be appreciated.

  •  Ps installation on two different boot volumes of same machine?   Ps 11.0.2 Mac PPC  and then...

Hello, I'm new to this forum.
My goal here is to have two different Photoshop 11.0.2 installations on two different boot volumes of one and the same Power Mac (PPC) G5 Quad, one being a Tiger 10.4.11 system and the other one a Leopard 10.5.8 system, for the purpose of installing two different modalities of the same Epson Photo Stylus 2200 printer, one with the printer set to use the photo black ink cartridge for luster and glossy papers, and the other one using the matte blank ink.
This is because I prefer to simply change the startup disk when switching inks rather than having to delete and re-add the necessary printers.  (This particular printer does not support ink cartridge switching under any version of Mac OS X.)
Photoshop is currently only used on this one machine.  Obviously this intended scheme fits well within the EULA conditions.
    My three questions are:
    (a) whether there is any technical issue I have failed to consider,
    (b) whether each copy of Photoshop on the same machine will have to be activated separately (in other words, is the activation tied to the CPU or to the boot volume drive?), and
    (c) if the answer to the latter question is yes, whether this will count as one or two activations for purposes of later installing a single instance of the Photoshop 13.x ("CS6") upgrade on an Intel- MacBook, since obviously C6 will not run on my PPC Mac.  Again in sum, will I be able to continue to run Photoshop 11.0.2 on two different volumes of the same PPC machine and the Photoshop 13.x upgrade on the laptop?
As further explanation, I would use Photoshop 13.x on the Mac-Intel laptop only in order to run ACR 7.x, but would keep my PPC G5 Quad as my photo editing and printing machine running Photoshop 11.0.2, since an upgrade of my desktop machine to a comparably powerful Mac Pro is simply not an option for both financial and technical reasons (the Classic environment is essential).
Any and all input and guidance will be appreciated.

  • Is there a repair installation option?

If this was a PC I'd say that I had corrupted my Windows Registry. All I get when I boot up is a flashing folder with a question mark and the "Mac face". Is there a way to repair the OS without deleting all ythe data already o nthe Hard Drive? Sort of the Mac equivalent of using Windows XP Setup's "Repair" function?

    Welcome To  Discussions DarkPhoenixe!
    "...repair installation option?"
From your one of your other Topics, I think that you have Tiger 10.4.x installed. Is that correct?
    Did you just install Tiger?
If so, what version of OS did you upgrade from?
Did you do a Simple Upgrade, or an Archive & Install?
Did you use a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD?
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Installation halts - probably because of sapdb.inf

    Hello fellow SAP admins
I'm trying to install SAP solution manager/netweaver 7.0 on a Sun Sparc T2000 with Solaris 10. The installation works fine until I get to phase 13 of 47: "Create database schema". I don't get an error message, but the installation halts and I can read the following from the promt:

  • Could not erase target volume, operation timed out

    Hi All,
Using Netrestore,to image g5 ppc, I can netboot fine, but when they go to erase the target volume, I get Could not erase target volume, operation timed out. When I try to use disk utility in the netrestore, and then get another message that says Macintosh HD could not be unmounted.
    Tony.

As you've discovered, the system is unable to unmount the internal hard drive. This means that some process is using, or has opened a file on, the internal hard drive.
If you can get into the terminal, doing an lsof may tell you what process is using the drive.
The other possibility, if you're trying to NetBoot into a volume and then restore, is that the drive is in use for the shadow file. If that's the case, you should be able to work around this by enabling diskless NetBoot.

  • LVM2 - installer "see" already existing logical volumes [SOLVED]

I've been messing about with LVM for about a week now and ran into a snag with the installer.
Essentially if, for whatever reason, I make my logical volumes, then reboot and start the installer it won't "see" my L.Vols at all.  I did the
    modprobe dm_mod
before starting and after starting the installer.  The result is still the same either way.  I ended up removing the L.Vols and re-creating them, then running the installer again.  It seems to be the only way I can get the setup scripts to "find" the Logical Volumes properly if the Physical Extent/Volume Group/Logical Volumes pre-existed before invoking /arch/setup.
I searched the installation forum but the closest thing I found was this from a year ago:  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=48483.  I'm a bit baffled as to how I can get the installation routine to recognise the volumes exist so I don't need re-create things every time I want to do another install.  Any advice is appreciated.

I think once you've modprobe dm_mod, u should be able to do a bunch of commands to activate existing volume groups and logical volumes. I'm running an lvm setup and it took me ages to suss it all out and get up and running.
You can definitely do an lvscan command which should look for logical volumes and list them for you. I think you can activate them through there too. Does doing any of the following give you anything once you've done the modprobe?
    pvdisplay
    vgdisplay
    lvdisplay
    Also
ls -al /dev/mapper (I think) should lisy the devices for lvm tht already exist. Sorry can't be more accurate for you at the mo, am not in front of my linux box. :-(

  • Repair installation problem

I want to do a Repair Installation of PS CS5. Both 32 and 64 bit versions of PS are installed on my Win 7 64bit machine, but the names of neither version appear in the 'Programs & Features' section of the Control Panel. What should I do?

I cannot address CS 5 per se, but had to do the full Repair Install to my CS 2 Production Studio Premium (all programs), and had no Activation issues. Now, that was back when the CS 2 Activation Server was up and running, but MY Repair Install did nothing to my Activations. Obviously, that was then, and this is now.
Good luck, and please report any issues. As a precaution, maybe Deactivate, Repair, then Re-Activate?

  • Satellite L300 - Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista

    Hi,
I have a Satellite L300. I have NO dvd of windows vista, the seller says me that the dvd of windows is inside the pc.
Now I have to resolve an windows update issue (80073712 - kb 971644) and in this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310/en-us I don't know how execute the steps of method 3 because i have no dvd of vista.
    Can you help me???
*Method 3: Perform a repair installation of Windows Vista*
*When you perform a repair installation, this restores the current Windows Vista installation to the version on the installation DVD. This requires you to reinstall all updates that are not included in that version of Windows Vista.*
*To perform a repair installation of Windows Vista, follow these steps:*
    *Restart the computer.*
*Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.*
*Note If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, click Start, type <Drive>:\setup.exe in the Search box, and then click Setup in the programs list. Then, click Install Now.*
*Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).*
*Insert the product key if you are prompted for it.*
*Click to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.*
*On the Which type of installation to you want screen, click Upgrade.*
*When the installation is complete, restart the computer, and then try to install updates again.*

    Hi fardei,
If you use the HDD recovery to reinstall Windows, your whole computer will not be formatted. Only the first partition will be deleted and thats all. Check the Toshiba document how the HDD recovery option works.
Using the Toshiba recovery disk creator tool allows you to create a recovery disk. Normally on the first start up where you purchased the notebook, you did get the following message:
    +Important INFORMATION+
+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+
+your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly+
+from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"+
+and follow the menue instructions) or create a bootable Recovery Disc Medium for this purpose.+
+Toshiba recommends you to create Recovery Disc Medium using the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator" to ensure+

    Hi Dan,
Since you want to replace the destination volume for the existing backups, I recommend you can delete the existing backup task and create a new backup task, or you can also try the steps below:
Reattach the original (old) volume and also attach the new volume to VM, then run the powershell script to
add the new target volume firstly, then remove the old volume, after you run the script you can detach the original volume from VM.
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
    Best Regards,

  • Installation error in invoking target 'agent nmhs'

    Dear All,
I am new to this forum and I would like to inquire about the reasons behind a specific installation error of Oracle 11gR2 on Fedora 13 and the way to fix it. The error led to a weired behavior for the EM. I am going to explain everything precisely to flap the correspondence time so please please please bare with me.
I have followed precisely all the pre-requisites for preparing the installation environment (Fedora 13 Linux OS) by following the instructions in the manual that comes on the source installation Disk-1of Oracle 11g R2, like assigning the environment variables, setting kernel parameters, installation of all the required and necessary packages, creating the necessary directories and changing the owner ship, in addition to creation the user 'oracle' and the necessary groups. This installation ends up with a successful working database that can be accessed using sqlplus locally and remotely from another machine. My EM also worked but for a limited period of time for only about 10 to 15 min then after that I cannot access it due to a problem in the agent background process or daemon that is resulted from the error happened during the installation, and need to restart my machine. Here is what happened.
My installation is a stand alone database (database control / console database). Everything went smoothly during the installation except the following error that I couldn't get rid of or fix it, and I just continued the installation by clicking on the continue button of the OUI alert window. The error message on the alert window is:
Error in invoking target 'agent nmhs' of makefile '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/sysman/lib/ins_emagent.mk'. See '/u01/app/oraInventory/logs/installActions2010-06-24_03-22-15PM.log' for details.
and here is the contenets (error part) of the installActions2010-06-24_03-22-15PM.log file

notice the EM Daemon (agent background process) is not running
Becuase of this error, the actual status of the database is not shown up in the EM. For example, if I try to startup my database through the EM, it starts successfully, but its status will not be shown, same thing happens for the listener. Clicking the View Details link in the EM after starting up the database shows up the following:

    Agent is Not Running
again notice the last line of the message Agent is not running.
After all the above, I beleive that the installation error is the cause of all that. I would appreciate it if you could help me solving this problem. Thanks.
    Bassam A. Al-Khaffaf

    Hi,
I have successfully installed Oracle 11g R2 after some manual intervention to solve this linker error.
The linker error actually gave the useful hint to solve this problem:
INFO: /usr/bin/ld: /home/akos/app/akos/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/sysman/lib//libnmectl.a(nmectlt.o): undefined reference to symbol 'B_DestroyKeyObject'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'B_DestroyKeyObject' is defined in DSO /home/akos/app/akos/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/libnnz11.so so try adding it to the linker command line
/home/akos/app/akos/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/libnnz11.so: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
This means that the gcc linker phase lacked an option for "-lnnz11". I run "make agent nmhs" manually,
so the last command that gave an error can be copy&pasted to the command line. Adding "-lnnz11"
after "-lcore11" to the command made it run successfully, and also re-running "make agent nmhs"
on the command line didn't fail now. Then I chose the "Retry" button in the installer GUI and it proceeded.
This change in the Fedora 13 linker was announced at
    http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/13/html/Release_Notes/sect-Release_Notes-The_GCC_Compiler_Collection.html
In Fedora 12 and earlier it was allowed to an app with library A and the app was able to use symbols
from every other libraries (B, C, ...) that library A was linked with. In Fedora 13 this is not allowed anymore,
your app needs to be linked explicitely with library B, C, etc.
Later, there was another problem with SELinux not allowing text relocation in .../product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1
    which was solved by running:
    chcon -t textrel_shlib_t '.../product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1'
and re-running configuration of "Oracle Net Configuration Assistant". This allows keeping SELinux on.
After that, installation and setup of the first database succeeded on Fedora 13.

  • IPad is connected to a stereo installation - no control of the volume by the iPad

When my iPad is connected to a stereo installation, there is no possibility anymore to control the volume by the iPad.
'the volume control' is replaced by 'dock connector' on the iPad

This issue manifests as The volume control shows  sound effects on screen  or phantom docking no volume slide control.
For the beginners, the issue is often the side switch is set to mute on off and not screen rotation lock. The switch is off. (see settings)
Other issues around software and airport use can be resolved by hard reset, or reset options inside the settings. I use AIRPORT all the time.
You may have even tried the re-installing the firmware/ios
So when all has failed to work, the you may have dock connector PIN 21 problem.
I had an issue that started with the ipad whe it was on USB cable to PC.
No drop, no sudden cable movements. Just gone....
No volume slider.   IPAD behaves as if it was docked when not.
Slight movement when usb cable is in occasionally brings the volume control back but only for a few seconds then it disappears.
Mine is going back for repair/replacement.
    cheers Phil
