Rpd Modeling-Forecast Measures

Hi,
I have a reporting requirement to display Revenue, Cost forecasts for 3months, 2months and 1 months from the current month.
Could you please help me in modeling this scenario at rpd?
These are few details that might help:
1) the Revenue and Cost measures are precalculated at Data Warehouse end and stored at "Weekly" grain.
2) The report must show the above measures for the current month as well the succeeding two months. So basically, Cost and revenue measures for the month selected
(provided in a dashboard prompt else the current system month) followed by the measures for the next 2 mmonths.
If you need any more info, please let me know,.
Thanks

Hi.
No need to RPD update. If I understood, the user want only one parameter in dashboard prompt, and that is month.
It would be much clearly to show two prompts (month from and to, or month and rolling number).
You may find this useful:
Re: Dynamic change of Reports shown with the prompt selection
The only problem is how to set up filter in Answers to get only 3 months including the first which user selects in the prompt.
You may resolve it like this:
1. Make one prompt form month, I use TIMES.CALENDAR_MONTH_DESC which has YYYY-MM format, and set presentation variable, pv_month for example
2. Make report in answers with columns
TIMES.CALENDAR_MONTH_DESC (set order by this column)
YOUR_MEASURE
and
RSUM(YOUR_MEASURE)
Now we need to set up filter according our dashboard prompt, so make filter on month column (use convert this filter to SQL option) and write:
TIMES.CALENDAR_MONTH_DESC
between '@{pv_month}'
and
EVALUATE('TO_CHAR(ADD_MONTHS(TO_DATE(%1, %2), %3),%2)' as char, '@{pv_month}', 'yyyy-mm', 2)
Now, it should give you 3 months from selected.
Edit: I updated link.

  • Rpd Modelling, Report design - Forecast Measure

    Hi,
I have a reporting requirement to compare the forecast measures across months:
The report format is such: Dashboard Prompt => 'Month' Selection... say M1
If month not selected in the prompt then take the current month, say M1
    Revenue
    Month - 3 months 120
    Month - 2 months 110
    Month - 1 month 100
Taking M1 = Aug in above scenario:
    Revenue
    May 120
    June 110
    July 100
How should i show the previous months data in my report given a value for a month? In this case previous 1month, 2 month and 3 month.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. But I am not able to achieve this scenario with pivot table. Maybe you can explain how to achieve it with pivot table or some other approach. I will explain again:
    Prompt: Month= M1
    Forecast Revenue
    M1 -1month
    M1 -2months
    M1- 3months
    Say M1 = Aug
    Forecast Revenue
    July
    June
    May
    Thanks

  • OBIEE 11g: RPD modeling question

I am running into challenges thinking of a design for the following request and would love to get input from the forum users...
I have a FactA and a FactB. Both join to a Site Dimension.
Both Facts contain a Site_Key, Occurrence Number and a Metric.
FactA has 3 rows for Site "New Jersey" with 3 Occurrences and the applicable Metric. FactB has 1 row for Site "New Jersey" with the applicable Metric.
The ask was for Ad-Hoc users. When a user selects only Metric (FactA) and Site then the query hit FactA (Returns 3 rows). When a user selects only Metric (FactB) and Site then the query hit FactB (Returns 1 row). If a user selects both metrics then the query brings back the common rows, a join on the two facts betweeen Site_Key and Occurrence Number (In this case 1 row is returned for Occurrence 1 in both tables).
I had tried with the Physical joins between Site and the two Facts. Then joining the two facts as well.
I then set up a Logical Fact with 3 LTSs. One being FactA, one being FactB and the other being a join between FactA and FactB (Under the General tab and Joins). I mapped Metric (FactA) to the 2 applicable LTS and Metric (FactB) to the 2 applicable LTS.
OBIEE will stick with one LTS or the other no matter how the metrics are pulled, whether the Priority Group is the same or different.
I understand Fact to Fact join is not optimable, I was just hoping to get feedback on if this request is even acheivable from an RPD modeling perspective.
    Thanks in advance!

    In Physical layer:
    Fa Joins with Sites
    Fb Joins with Sites
Create alias for Fa and Fb name them as Faa and Fbb join both tables, and also with Sites (any one Fact is enough to join with Sites)
    In BMM layer:
    Logical table Sites
    Logical Fact with sources:
LT1-->Fa; Create metric this is for
When a user selects only Metric (FactA) and Site then the query hit FactA (Returns 3 rows). LT2-->Fb; Create metric this is for
When a user selects only Metric (FactB) and Site then the query hit FactB (Returns 1 row). LT3-->Pull Faa and then properties add Fbb, then Create metric this is for
If a user selects both metrics then the query brings back the common rows, a join on the two facts betweeen Site_Key and Occurrence Number >(In this case 1 row is returned for Occurrence 1 in both tables). If this is not working send me email.

  • Which Forecasting Model/ Forecasting Stratergy is suitable for Steel Plant

    Hello Friends,
Could you pl suggest me Which Forecasting Model/ Forecasting Stratergy is suitable for Steel Plant.Any one having the steel plant experiance pl suggest me .
    Edited by: sivaram2411 on Jan 19, 2011 6:37 AM

    Hi Sivaram,
I haven't worked in Steel but worked in Cement industry. Cement is another input to construction industry, just like steel. In India, both have seasonal demand. But I would give a generic suggestion here, though you can check with your network in other steel companies having similar product offering as yours, about the forecasting model they follow.
Choice of forecasting model is not industry dependent. Because within the same industry, each player has a different product mix, different set of customers and in different geograhies. Forecasting model is selected based on the analysis of historical data. So you can take last 2 years available data to start with.
Demand Planning provides the following statistical forecasting models: constant model, trend model, seasonal model, trend and seasonal model, Croston method with exponential smoothing, linear regression, and causal models with multiple linear regression (MLR).
Time series models are the most commonly used forecasting methods.
The flow chart is like this:
Raw Data collection --> Data analysis --> Analyzed data --> Forecasting Model selection
You can use plotting as a method of Data analysis,
We need to find the best forecasting model, so that it gives us the most accurate demand. There is no systematic approach for the selection of a forecasting model and you need to find the best for you by trial and error.
The following factors impact the model selection: (1) Forecast Horizon (2) Data Availability / Requirements (3) Pattern of Past Data (4) Level of Detail in the Forecast (5) Cost Factors (6) Accuracy and (7) Ease of Application.
So use the historical data, analyse it, try using the available forecasting methods one by one to forecast for a period during which the actual data is already available with you and find the one which is best matching the actual figures. The model giving most accurate results, or the one with least forecast error, would be the one you are looking for.

  • Report using Tabular Model and Measures based on Distinct Counts

    Hello,
I am creating a report that should present something like this:
    YEAR-1 | MONTH-1 | MONTH-2 | MONTH-3... | YEAR | MONTH-1 | MONTH-2 | MONTH-3...
My problem is that when designing the dataset to support this layout I drag the Year, Month and Distinct count Measure, but on the report when I want the value for the YEAR level I don't have it and I cannot sum the months value...
What is the best aproach to solve this? Do I really have to go to advanced mode and customize my MDX or DAX? Can't basic users do something like this that seems so trivial and needed?
    Thank you
    Luis Simões

    Hi Luis,
According to your description, you create a Reporting Services report using Analysis Service Tabular Model as the datasource, now what you want is sum the months value on year level, right?
In your scenario, you can add the Month field to column group, add a parent group using Year Field and then add a Total on Month group. In this case, Reporting Services will sum the months value on Year level. I have tested it on my local environment, the
screenshot below is for you reference.
Reference:Lesson 6: Adding Grouping and Totals (Reporting Services)
If this is not what you want, please describe your dataset structure, so that we can make further analysis.

  • ATE does not recognize other models of measuring instruments connected through GPIB

    Hi,
I've a ATE (Automatic Test Equipment) which has many measuring instruments connected to it through GPIB. Recently one of the oscilloscope was not working & I tried to replace with a oscilloscope of different model, the ATE does not recognize the new instrument. As the only communication means is through GPIB, I presume that the issue is on GPIB connection. Is there any setting or configuration that I must do besides setting the GPIB address at the replacement oscilloscope?

It's also certainly possible that the ATE software was written for a specific make and mode of scope. It's two different things when the ATE software doesn't recognize the scope and when the gpib controller itself doesn't see it. Each make and model of scope will return a unique string when queried with the *IDN? command and it's common for ATE software to check this before proceeding and sometime different models of scopes from the same manufacturer will have different command sets. Do you have access to the software? Can you check what the ATE program is doing? Do what Uwe recomends first and if MAX finds the scope, I would suspect the ATE program.

  • LRS Model with measure

I have been looking into using the supplied Network Data Model with LRS in 10G. I used SDO_NET.CREATE_CREATE_LRS_NETWORK to create the network model. Reviewing the tables created I noticed the NODE$ table contains a measure column. Can anyone give me an example of how this would be used? Is this measure column to accommodate non-node points?

When you create an LRS network, it allows you to hook linear referenced geometry data to your network. All analysis is still done using the link, node, and cost information you store, i.e. geometry information is not used.
However, by having a measure value associated with nodes, you can extract the coordinates of the node from a linear referenced geometry using the measure as an input value to the LRS function sdo_lrs.locate_point

  • RPD Modelling - Aggregate tables

    Hello,
I have two facts which are Actuals and Budgets.
F_Actuals - Month level Data, Date Fk being Date_WID(So it has data only for the first of the month)
F_Budget - Day level Data, FK being Date_WID
    Dim_Date - Day, PK being Date_WID
I have created aggregate tables for the facts at Month level, and at other dimension levels. Now when I snowflake these tables in BMM as other sources for the fact, I have set the content filter for Date Dim at detail level(for AGG tables), though the data is actually at month level, its exists for a single day in the whole month.
I have been facing performance issues when Budget columns are pulled into the report, as it doesnt have any AGG table WRT other dimensions.
So the Budget columns were included into the Actual AGG tables. Everything is fine till this point. But I have two coulmns in my presentation layer for Budget, one from AGG and one from detail Budget Fact. So as to give the user only one column, I have snowflaked the Actual AGG fact with the F_Budget and set the content levels appropriatly.
Issue: The data doesnt match. As long as the column from F_Actuals are pulled the data is accurate, but once columns from F_Budget are pulled the data is wrong.
Do you anything wrong with the modelling? or what actually went wrong here?
    Thanks.

I dont see any issues with the snowflaking, though you snowflaked Actual AGG tables to F_Budget. If your data doesnt match, i would check the content levels. As you said the combination of columns from both facts is where the issue is, so probably check all the dimensions and its levels set in your facts, probably F_Budget in particular.

  • Forecast Modeling in Oracle

In 11i, can you develop model specifications by item? It appears whatever model you select gets imposed on every SKU and customer. What if you want to adjust the model specification by SKU or a group of skus?

    Hi Mark,
just to be clear - the standard automatic forecast method in ODP will apply each method (and multiple variations of each of those methods) to each item at the forecast generation level. The system will select what it deems to be the best fit and will apply it. So the result of the automatic foreacast will be the most appropriate methodolgy (at least found within the restrictions of the Geneva Engine - obviously) for each item. The idea is that you don't have to then create myriads of other specific forecast measures in order to get the optimum.
Of course, building myriads of forecast versions will enable you to determine the variances to automatic. This then means you can then check that the automatic forecast is working properly and also enable analysis against actuals and therefore the building of better forecasts... which can potentially mean an ever increasing number of forecast measures that will consume disk space until the cows come home. This makes sense during CRP or User Acceptance but in the Live environment less is definitely better. Anyway, I have found that on the whole, the users are not interested in creating gazillions of measures to eat up IT infrastructure - they just want one line to adjust before the cycle ends.
You can create a subset of data (in a measure - of course) and then create a Forecast based on that measure - so you could create myriads of small measures if you wanted to. You could also create some events that contain the SKU items in the shape that you wish and then apply them to certain measures. Otherwise - get a bigger box.
    Nice website BTW.

    Simon.

  • Multi Fact RPD with Compatibility Error

    All,
I was wondering if you can help with this issue.  Here is a picture of my RPD model in Oracle OBIEE 11g BI Administrator:
    http://scottysols.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/multi_fact_model.png?w=908
    It is in the format D1 <-- F1 --> D2 <-- F2 --> D3.
In the picture you can also see the Logical Level settings for one of the Logical Table Sources and one of the Measure columns.
When I try to create a report in OBIEE, OBIEE throws a SQL error.  It doesn't understand how to relate D1 to D3.  My requirement is to build an RPD that supports a report like this:
    D1 Column | F1 Measure Aggregated | D2 Column | F2 Measure Aggregated | D3 Column
minus any cartesians.  I haven't even gotten to the cartesian error (which would be a good sign I am on the right track), i just get the error:
None of the fact tables are compatible with the query request AWARD_SUMMARY_DIM.AWARD_NUMBER
We have also tried smashing F1 and F2 together into a single Fact within Business Model and Mapping with the same results.
    Thanks,
    S.

    Srini,
    First, thanks for your support.
Second, I went into F1, then sources, then the Logical Table Source properties General tab and added D2, then F2.  After updating the Presentation layer and restarting OBIEE, my report still returns the same error.
I tried to force the join on F2 next.  Same as above, but in reverse.  I added D2, then F1 as sources for F2.  Same error remains:
None of the fact tables are compatible with the query request AWARD_SUMMARY_DIM.AWARD_NUMBER (D1).

  • Replacing Business Objects - Modelling Issue

I'm working on a large 'BI' project that is replacing Business Objects with OBIEE ( actually its not really a BI project its more of a give us what we've got now using OBIEE project ) - which is proving challenging in some areas.
One example is with the Data Model that BO provides in its Universe, the model I'm replacing is pretty much 3NF (even though it uses DIM and FACT in the table names) they're joined pretty much all over the place, which enables the users to select from tables which can be 4,5,6 steps away from the original - including via M:M relationships!
Anyway one specific issue is based around the old question of multiple fact tables where not all dimensions are conformed.
    Dim - Business Manager ---< Fact - Forecast >----- Dim - Product -----< Fact - Actuals >------ Dim Salesman
I've setup the Dimensions for each Dimension Logical Table.
I've created a single logical table containing a Forecast and Actual Amount from the 2 fact tables and set the logical levels appropriately at Table Level. For the Forecast measure I have a logical level set to 'Total - Salesman' and for the Actuals measure I have logical level set to 'Total - Business Manager'.
This works great when I select an Attribute from Business Manager, and Salesman and both of the measures in the Answer.
However the users want to be able to select from Business Manager, and Salesman dimensions without selecting the measures, is this possible - do I need to add a bridging table to resolve the relationships between a Business Manager and Salesman explicitly rather than implicitly via the facts?
I have set Implict Fact at the Presentation Model, however this doesn't work (it misses off Total Level aggregation in the OBI Server SQL).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/answers.

Thanks for the helpful reply Turribeach, along with the interesting and informative link.
This is my first foray into the world of BO and I think some of the points you make in the link are right on the money. I've spent many years working with Oracle Tools (Dataquery,Data Browser, Discoverer and then OBIEE when Oracle acquired the tool ). There are difficulties in the modeling with OBIEE, certainly when it comes to trying to replicate a 'fairly' complex BO universe they become apparent.
Many hoops to jump through to give the user a like for like, which I'm not convinced will be possible - maybe some negotiation is required :-)

  • Creating Tabular Models using AMO

    Hi,
I am trying to setup Tabular Models on SSAS using AMO referring to the materials available at Technet and the Codeplex AMO Tabular Tutorial. I have a few questions/issues
currently and was hoping I could get some help from here. The tool I am working with currently supports Multidimensional mode via AMO and I am trying to extend most of its features from the Multidimensional model. So, some of the questions might not exactly
fit into the Tabular model and if so, please do point them out.
RELATIONSHIPS: While creating relationships among tables,
would it suffice to create the relationship in the Data Source View Schema (as the tool currently does for the Multidimensional mode) or should we explicitly create relationships under the dimensions that we create to represent the table in Tabular mode? The
latter is the approach mentioned in the tutorial and I wanted to know if there is any difference between the relationships created using the 2 methods.
MEASURES: I am trying to create measures using Native
OLAP Measure objects in the Tabular model. I understand the shortcomings of this type of measures but I would still need to create them for basic aggregation functions like SUMMATION, COUNTS etc… I tried creating the measures using the same Measure Group that
was created to represent the table and used a ColumnBinding to the Measure’s source-column for the measure object’s source property but I get the following error:
Binding for VertiPaq measure MEASURE_NAME in measure group MEASURE_GROUP_NAME is invalid because it does not match any property binding of the fact dimension
    TABLE_NAME
Am I missing anything here? Is there a better way of creating OLAP measures in TABULAR model without using the default Table dimensions that we create?
HIERARCHIES: I tried creating new Dimensions to hold
hierarchies for a table but when creating them, I get the error about MISSING ROWNUMBER attribute. Is this attribute mandatory for every dimension that is created?
To avoid this problem, I used the same dimension that was created to represent the table and tried adding inter-table attribute relationships to it but I get the following exception
message which I cannot figure out.
VertiPaq property ‘’ cannot have a name binding.
In general, can we create separate measure groups and dimensions, apart from the ones we use to represent the table, to store the custom measures and hierarchies? Is this a recommended
approach? This way, I am trying to keep things in parallel with the Multidimensional model that our tool currently supports but when I create such individual dimensions and measure groups, I get an error on the mismatch between the number of measure groups
    and dimensions in the table.
Please bear with the long list of questions. I could not find any help online for these and so am posting them all here.
    Thank you.

No - relationships in the DSV have no impact on the end model. You need to explicitly create relationships between your dimensions and measure groups for them to be picked up as relationships in your tabular model.
MEASURES: I am trying to create measures using Native OLAP
Measure objects in the Tabular model. I understand the shortcomings of this type of measures but I would still need to create them for basic aggregation functions like SUMMATION, COUNTS etc… I tried creating the measures using the same Measure Group that was

Am I missing anything here? Is there a better way of creating OLAP measures in TABULAR model without using the default Table dimensions that we create?
There is no concept of native measures in a Tabular model. You need to create all your measures as "Calculated Measures" in AMO, but using the appropriate DAX expressions instead of MDX.
HIERARCHIES: I tried creating new Dimensions to hold hierarchies
for a table but when creating them, I get the error about MISSING ROWNUMBER attribute. Is this attribute mandatory for every dimension that is created?
To avoid this problem, I used the same dimension that was created to represent the table and tried adding inter-table attribute relationships to it but I get the following exception message
    which I cannot figure out.
VertiPaq property ‘’ cannot have a name binding.
Yes, I believe every table needs the hidden RowNumber attribute. The
TableAddEmptyTable function in the tabular AMO sample on codeplex shows you how to create this.
No you can't create any extra structures. Tabular projects only supports a subset of AMO. You need to follow the example on codeplex very closely and read all the code comments if you are making changes because it's very easy to break things.
My suggestion is to create an abstraction layer either using the TabularAMO library from codeplex as it is or creating your own library if you only need a subset of the functionality. This will mean that your core code is not too tightly bound to AMO. The
reason for this is that I would hope that MS will replace AMO with something better for Tabular models in a coming release and having a clear abstraction layer should make it easier to update to a new API.
