Saving an Emac HD to a powerbook G4 HD

Can I transfer the entire emac HD to my powerbook G4 12" (10.4.11), and save it there? I have plenty of HD space. I want to do a clean install on my emac and then transfer back some of the saved emac HD from the powerbook.

Mac OS X doesn't have a "clean install" per se:

As for using an Powerbook's hard drive to store an eMac's hard drive contents, yes that's possible. Just don't attempt to boot the eMac's old System folder from your Powerbook. Target Disk Mode allows you to copy the entire contents carefully over into a Disk Image or separate disk partition on your Powerbook. You want it self contained, so that you can later recall as much of the information as possible when restoring the eMac's contents. Target Disk Mode is described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
I'm assuming you desire to erase your eMac, is that the intent? And if so, why?

  • Importing video on PowerBook G4

I have imported a video clip into a CPS program for a presentation. On my PowerBook, which has more memory and a faster processor than the eMac, the video stops and starts and gets out of synch all the way through. On the eMac, which should be the one giving me the problems, the video plays smoothly andis great. Does anyone have any ideas why on the PowerBook it would be inferior? The PowerBook should be far superior to the eMac. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have updated QuickTime and anything else I can find to update. Thanks!

Perhaps an easier way to test the drive speed theory would be to put the PowerBook into Firewire target mode (restart with T help down), and connect that to the eMac and run the video from the PowerBook drive. That would show if the slower drive makes all the difference. If the video plays perfectly then something else is slowing down the PowerBook. Connecting the eMac drive to the PowerBook would also be a valid test, but booting the PowerBook off the eMac drive wouldn't, because if the video played well from the eMac drive you couldn't be sure if it was a system software issue or a drive speed.
One thing you could try though from having started the PowerBook from teh eMac drive is you could play the video from the PowerBook drive. If it plays well that would prove that it's a software issue. Things like Spotlight indexing or Virex could be culprits.
The data rate on compressed movies is relatively low, and although I mentioned it as a possibility I don't think that a 4200 rpm drive will play a moderate data rate video (even 28 megabit DV) any less well than a 7200 rpm drive.

  • Question about emacs

I understand emacs comes with the the Xtools. Could anyone tell me how can you open it with GUI? I can only open emacs within the terminal and it is rather inconvinient. I tried to open this version of emacs in X11, samething happens.
I know there are GUI versions of emacs avaliable to download but would that mean I will have to have TWO versions of emacs installed in my powerbook?

    Hi Tong,
Like most Aqua apps, it should be possible to invoke the executable inside the app bundle with a path like /Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs. However, that's certainly not in your path and it seems silly to add to the path for a single application. You could make an alias that uses the full path but I think the easiest way would simply be to use:
    open -a Emacs
I should note that after posting I tried the version to which I linked and was unable to get it to work on Tiger. However, the newer version 23 at Emacs.app runs without crashing. It is also a sourceforge project by the same folks and is based on the unicode-2 branch of the core GNU emacs. That version of Emacs is itself is alpha software but it seems to work. Unfortunately I know very little about Emacs (I use vim and BBEdit) so I can hardly test it thoroughly.

  • How do I transfer my apps from an external drive to my new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and am currently in the process of getting everything set up. My previous Mac was a powerbook, so there are many changes that I will be getting used to in the near future.
My primary concern at the moment is getting my apps into my new iMac iTunes library. I have all my music, apps, podcasts, etc. saved on an external drive which I plugged into my new iMac. To import the music into iTunes. I selected File > Add to Library > then selected the external drive with my iTunes folder & imported the enitre folder (which was 163.57 GB). Everything, including my music, movies, podcasts, books, & TV shows transfered over just fine with the exception of my apps. After researching the issue, I discovered the iTunes was saving all the apps on my powerbook instead of the external drive in a folder titled Mobile Applications. I then transfered the folder from my powerbook to the external drive and followed the steps above to try and import my apps into my new iMac library. But have had no luck. Each app comes up with the following message when I try to add it to the iMac library:
The app "[adult swim]" could not be added to your library because an error occured. An unknown error occurred (-50).
This is as far as I have been able to get. I am ensured that my new iMac Itunes account is authorized for that computer & have synced my iPhone once, which updated iCal, but no apps.
Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I tried to use the Mac Migrate program but did not seem to have any luck. It took almost 12 hours to run over wifi and hung up at the very end. Also, I do not see any evidance of any files being added.
    Thanks.
    Jeff / Texas

Migration didn't work for me on the music side of things either. What did work however was transferring the entire iTunes folder over to my new computer. Everything switched then, and it was just like iTunes on my old mac. Maybe if you can find the library files in there or something and transfer them over.

  • How to match color on g4 ibook for projector or TV

I'm doing an on screen iphoto slideshow presentation for an upcoming event on a projector via VGA. We did a test run yesterday with my ibook g4 1.33 (OS 10.4.9) hooked up to a Viewsonic PJ-750-2 Projector. The color was awful. Tried a custom calibration with no success.
The color issue looked the same as when I make a slideshow DVD to view on a TV. Horrible yellow cast and and over saturated.
When I got back home, I was curious to see how it would look if I hooked the ibook up to a television, via RGB with an Apple video adapter. The images looked exactly the same as on screen through the projector. Horrible color, and over saturated.
I'm guessing I really need to do a custom calibration? If I don't succeed in that respect, I can always edit each image while viewing on TV, but that's the long way. Is there another common issue that I'm not aware of?
I'm a newbie at using external displays, and have my ibook display custom calibrated for print publications that I work for using Photoshop CS2. The files that I send them match perfectly when I see them in print.
Also, any suggestions on projector display resolution and refresh rate?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I've search the forums, but didn't find an answer. Any additional advice is welcome.
    ibook g4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Emac g4, imac g3, powerbook g3

Yellow cast and oversaturated sounds like a bad cable connection. Tried cleaning both ends? Checking broken pins?
also try resetting pram, nvram, etc.
try selecting default mode on the displays
OSX provides pretty good default profiles for most displays.

  • Tv monitor real jumpy

Yup, I tried searching for my problem; I'm pretty sure I hooked everything up correct. I'm trying to check some footage on a tv monitor (I know, I'm poor) that runs through my miniDV camera S cable then into an external hard drive fire wire 400. I'm using a 1Ghz 15" powerbook with 1G RAM. There is only one fire wire port so the camera runs into the hard drive then into the computer. Video plays fine on the computer, sound comes out of the camera, and video plays on the TV monitor but jumps all over as if there were power serges or something. I've messed around with some of the settings in preferences and nothing fixes the problem. It is set for NTSC 29.97
I've had no problem with all the equipment in the past only I used an emac instead of the powerbook. Is there some crazy setting I'm missing or is it maybe the powerbook?
    Thanks for any input.

Perhaps this is your problem, perhaps it is not. A number of people have their camera hung off of HDs and it still works. And the bit about the camera slowing the whole bus to 100mbs is not true. It might be true if you make the camera the FIRST firewire device connected to the computer, but since it is at the end of the chain, the devices infront of it communicate at their rated speed.
What happens if you remove the HDs and have a direct connection to the camera from the computer?
In any case, do yourself a favor and pick up a firewire card (PCMCIA for laptops and PCI for desktops) to isolate the camera from the HDs.
    good luck,
    x

  • HELP! Mail stuck in the queue.

    Hey All,
We just noticed that none of us here recieved any mail today and that all of our messages incoming/outgoing have been stuck in the queue all day.
We seem to be able to view old messages with our mail clients as well as any folders. But any new messages that we send or recieve just go to the server and sit there.
It's quite puzzeling because we haven't changed anything on it, the server has just been quietly humming along for a while now.
However, this seems to have started happening after we restarted the box this morning because a web app we were building on it ended up in an infinite loop.
I tried re-starting the box, restarting the mail service, resending the queue and nothing, messages hit the queue and fail to be delivered to mailboxes.
Looking at my logs I saw this:
Nov 9 16:56:28 resserver imap[4733]: DBERROR: critical database situation
Nov 9 17:00:07 resserver imap[4833]: DBERROR: critical database situation

Nov 9 17:16:02 resserver reconstruct[5726]: DBERROR: critical database situation
In the queue some messages say this at the end:
host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 421 4.3.2 Service shutting down, closing channel (in reply to end of DATA command
Looking in my resources and in other places on the forums I've tried the following so far in hopes to narrow down and fix the problem:
    - rebuilt with mailbfr (as per petrobytes suggestion with someone else)
    - turned on and off content filtering
    - confirmed that the machine has the same IP
    - confirmed that it resolves forward and backward to it's hostname/IP
I can post any conf files you need, I'm desperate to get this fixed! Any help or insight anyone could provide would be well appreciated!

  • Can Connect To Server With Apple Mail?

    Hey All,
I've had my OS X Server running as a mail server for a few months now and things have been pretty sweet. My local clients have been using Mail.app to access their mail and Squirrelmail for when they are out of the office.
My question is, some of my employees have asked about using Mail.app/Outlook etc instead of WebMail to access mail when they are outside of the office. I figured this wouldn't be a problem but I seem to be having some connection issues. I can successfully get mail to pull down messages via pop, but it fails to connect to the SMTP (running on the same box) Not sure if it's a culprit but we have a firewall in place that blocks pretty much everything but the following:
    53, 21, 80, 143, 110, 25 and I've just added 587.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I put the server into the DMZ on our little router still with no luck so it makes me think it's not likely a firewall issue with the router. I'm not using the software firewall that comes with the server (yet).

  • Sony Handycam DCR-HC40 suddenly stops working with iMovie HD

Is it possible the FireWire (iLink) connection is busted?
I've bought two brand new FireWire cable and still iMovie couldn't see the camera. Camera has full battery; plays movies fine. Computer FW socket is fine too.
    Please, anyone, help?
This camcorder menu is thoroughly confusing and now maybe something even worse has happened.

Hi -- I've noticed quite a few posts from Sony camcorder owners who are having similar problems. I am having the same issue with a Sony DCR TRV240. I've used this camcorder successfully before via firewire with both an eMac desktop and a Powerbook G4, but suddenly I'm getting "Camera Not Connected". Despite following all the troubleshooting advice I can find from Mac and Sony, I've had no luck. I also purchased a new firewire cord -- didn't fix the problem. Did you ever solve your issue?

  • Connecting from dial up to wireless and back

I operate my Mac Book Pro with airport. My home is wireless. I am going to visit someone who is on dial up and would like to take my computer. I've purchased the USB modem needed to connect to dial up, howver, the instructions state a reconfiguation is needed. My question is what happens when I return home to the airport if the computer is configured for dial up? Will it require me to reconfigure for the airport? Has anyone done this? Thanks

All you have to do is in system preferences, in network re-chose Air-Port instead of dial up. Your Air Port settings will be saved

I created an iMovie and shared to iDVD, played with the theme etc... When I run the 'burn' command the Prepare, Process Menus, Process Slideshows all work but the 'Process Movies' gets stuck when Encoding Audio and the app is the 'not respoiding'.
    Anyone else experience this?

Finally got it to work. The only change I made

My husband's G4 has USB 1 so he has trouble when he wants to sync Iphone to computer.
Any one know of a way to fix this problem, upgrades? Thanks in advance

Depending on the model of computer, you may be able to add an USB 2.0 PCI or PCMCIA card. The iMac G4, iBook G4, eMac, and 12-inch PowerBook G4 are not upgradable. The remaining PowerBooks will accept a PCMCIA card, while a PCI card is used with desktops.

  • X200: Windows cannot find file error (& cygwin problem)

Often (about half the time) when I double click an icon (.docx files typically) to open I get a error reading"Windows cannot find ‘C\Users\username\Desktop\filename.docx’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."   I can *always* resolve this by simply double clicking again.   I ran  a complete disk check (the thing that runs on reboot) and it passed with no errors.  OS: Vista with all updates, Apps: Office 2007 with all updates.  Disk: Solid state (128GB) SAMSUNG MMCQE28G8MUP-0VA
    Any suggestions for troubleshooting tips?
I also wonder if this might be related to the following problem.  I have CYGWIN installed, and once I have changed a file in emacs and saved it, emacs can no longer find it (no matter what I do).  These days I get the message within emacs "file is not readable", although in the past the error has said something about a fork.

There is a primitive called 'Request Deallocation' that is suppose to free up resources in a VI after it is called.  You could try using this.

  • Error joining the AirPort Network - revisited

I just got my iBook back from the shop and am trying to reestablish the link with my Airport Express. I've reset the unit, gone through numerous hoops.
The AirPort Express currently has a green light, and my router shows it's connected. Yet, when I try to connect, or try to reconfigure, I get the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "Apple Network xxxxxx""
I have no idea what firmware is on the unit, nor do I have the means to update the firmware if needed (as I cannot get a connection to it).
Yes, I have a good internet connection. I'm posting this on an older iBook ... which is not AirPort ready.
    Thanks in advance!
Note ... This topic came up in June (2006) ... and is archived, yet unanswered.

    Ciao all.
I'll tack onto this thread rather than starting a new one. It sounds like similar-ish territory.
We've had Airport Express for about three weeks after our Airport Extreme gave up the ghost after 14 months. We have a DSL modem connected to Airport Express, and three computers - eMac, iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - connected wirelessly. Or we did, until tonight.
On the eMac, I lost my wireless connection. The Airport symbol was still black, and full strength, but my time connected stats disappeared. At the same time, my wife had the same thing happen on her Powerbook. Then the Airport symbol grayed out. As did the Powerbook. I fired up the iBook and the same thing was happening.
Briefly, for a couple of seconds, the Airport symbol would return to black, with, on a couple of occasions, the time connected stats reappearing. We would be connected again. Then the symbol would gray out again.
And the network name would have disappeared from the Airport menu.
If I turned off Airport and turned it on again, the symbol would be greyed out, but the network name would be there. Only, when I tried to connect, I would get the dreaded An Error Occurred Joining The Selected Wireless Network.
And I couldn't access the Airport Express via either Set Up or Admin.
I rest the Airport Express back to factory settings. The Airport symbol remained greyed out, but the Apple default wireless network was visible in the Airport menu. But I would still get the dreaded An Error Occurred, etc message.
Through Airport Set up, I was able to detect the Airport Express' default name and even the network name, but still wasn't able to connect to it.
Trying again, I was told that no new Airport networks could be found.
I've had basically the same results trying all three computers.
In terms of lights, the Express will sit there with a solid green light through all these shenanigans.
The internet connection is solid. Plugging the modem straight into the computer puts me online.
Do we have - as I fear - a lemon of an Airport Express after three weeks?

  • Unable to import an old .mbox

I have a collection of old Mail messages saved as a ".mbox" and tried to import them into Mail, but I keep getting an Error message telling me "No valid mbox files were found".
The only thing that has changed is I originally saved the .mbox from my old Powerbook G4, and now i am using a Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo. Does anyone know what is wrong. I am going through Mail - Import - Other - Select .mbox, but it keeps giving me the error message.
    These are valid Mail messages.

I select the folder which is a ".mbox"
For clarification, inside of the parent .mbox folder, are other nested .mbox folders, each of which contain a "Messages" folder and a file called "Info.plist". Inside of the "Messages" folder are multiple mail files with the identifiers .emix.
I do as you say. I select the parent folder called .mbox but keep getting the error message.
I have tried other combinations (eg selecting the .mbox's contained within the parent .mbox), but I still get the error message.
The only thing that works so far is if I select an individual .emix file, and drag it onto my Mail application icon in the dock, then it opens in Mail, but as I have hundreds of messages in the .mbox, it's not an effective way of importing them.
I hope this clarifies it. Any ideas?
