Sending MacBoom Pro for Servicing.. any advice on back up?

hi all,
i'm about to send my machine in for servicing due to water damage. what is the best way for me to back up my system so i don't lose all my emails, appz and stuff?
i've already backed up my docs and movies but what i really want is for my machine to be exactly as it is when i get it back should they decide to replace it under insurance. any suggestions? i've only got 40gb left of my external HDD. i have an ipod so i've backed up my music there. please help!

Your owner's manual will have instructions for removing the hard drive if you have the MBP with the user replaceable hard drive.
Here's something to consider. Do you have another Mac available to use? If so, consider doing this.
Remove the hard drive from your MBP and place it in a firewire enclosure. Also purchase a new firewire backup hard drive, since it sounds like you need a new and bigger one anyway. (Firewire because it's a lot faster than USB.)
Partition and format your new external drive, with one partition equal in size to your MBP's internal drive and any others that you may want. Then download Super Duper onto the other Mac:
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You will now have your MBP drive in an enclosure, a new external drive, and another Mac with Super Duper on it.
Mount both your MBP drive and the new external drive on the other Mac. Then you can use Super Duper to make an exact clone of your MBP's drive on the partition that is the same size as the MBP's drive on the external drive..
Once you have your bootable clone, you can reinstall the hard drive back into your MBP and send it off. You will have an exact copy of your MBP's drive on your new external. When you get the MBP back, you can clone from the external back onto the MBP. Everything will be exactly as you left it. Even if your original drive is erased or replaced, all your stuff will be saved on the new external drive. just as it was.
I know this sounds pretty involved, but I think it would be worth considering. A bootable clone is a really useful backup tool, and can be used in conjunction with other backup strategies.
Good luck!

    hi,
Make new material with material type DIEN....this shd solve your problem....
Since services cannot be stored, a material master record of this material type does not contain inventory data or inventory management data. No fields for gross weight, net weight or unit of weight are included in the basic data for a service, as are for other material types.
    Hope it helps...

  • Cannot send MMS on 3GS. Any advice please ?

Hi. I have a 3GS updated to 6.1.3. Cannot send MMS: the image sends about 90% and then gets stuck: undelivered.
I'm in UK on Tesco/o2. Their advice doesnt help. I've tried 'fixes' found on Google but none work.
I'd be really grateful for any advice or help.
    Thank you

That's a carrier issue.   Nothing to do with your phone.
If it really bothers you, try emailing the big file instead of texting it.

  • Best practice for Development - any advice?

We are fairly new to WebLogic/Java development. We are using 6.1. We are coding
an application, which uses EJBs, JSPs, etc following the M-V-C
model. We have about 10 developers working on various bits of
the system. Some have WebLogic/Visual Cafe installed on PCs and
can work happily without affecting anyone else. Others who do
not (yet) have powerful-enough PCs to run all this are trying
to develop and deploy their code on the unix box (HP_UX).
To enable each developer to work independantly, we have set up
a new domain for each developer. The idea for this is so that
each developer can re-deploy his .ear file in his own domain
without affecting others. We seem to be having lots of problems
with the consoles seeming to get confused and blowing up with
memory errors and all sorts of nasty things.
Is anyone else using a similar way of working?
Is what we are doing stupid?
Is there a better way of achieving the separation of developers?
Any advice/thoughts would be gratefully received.

We have several developers - each has their own development domain on the
same server, but we're not experiencing console problems as you described.
Are you sure they have their own domain instance of WLS?
This development environment works very well for us. Like you indicated,
each developer can deploy/redeploy without affecting others.
    Hope this helps...

As already provided, iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone which includes data such as most iPhone setting, email account settings, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, contact info, 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app, and photos available in your iPhone's Camera Roll.
In regards to contact info, the iPhone is designed to be synced with the supported application on your computer. With Vista, this can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007, or with the address book used by Windows Mail - the name change for Outlook Express with Vista. This address book is called Windows Contacts.
All iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer should remain on your computer and must be re-transferred to a replacement iPhone. If you don't have Outlook 2003 or 2007 available, you will lost calendar events available on your iPhone.
I suggest doing the following before sending your iPhone in for repair or exchange under warranty.
Import any photos available in your iPhone's Camera Roll by your computer. If you aren't syncing contact info and calendar events with a supported application on your computer, do so. When syncing, your iPhone's backup will be updated as the very first step during the sync process.
After you have done these steps - importing photos available in your iPhone's Camera Roll and syncing at least contact info with the supported application on your computer - you have Windows Contact available for this purpose, along with the sync process updating your iPhone's backup with iTunes, immediately before placing your iPhone in the box, go to Settings > General > Reset, and select Erase All Content and Settings. This is a secure erase option erasing all content and settings from your iPhone since your iPhone returned will likely not be returned to you and will end up becoming a refurbished iPhone.

  • Cursor issues in Word and Outlook after Adobe 9 pro trial download - any advice  - really annoying!

Hi, have downloaded Adobe Professional 9 as a trial and am looking to buy it (work with a charity). Did use Foxit phantom Pro and had no issues much considering its a cheap copy, but had to change to adobe so it was compatible with a colleagues system.
So heres what happens, i can now only navigate in a word document using the cursor arrows on my PC, can not click with a mouse in a document to change location or use the scroll on the RHS of the screen, can only scroll down with the cursor keys. Same issue in Outlook documents.
    Getting very annoying!
can also only highlight text for copy and paste using arrows and shift - not mouse click hold. have to then cut and paste using edit not RH mouse click.
I run windows vista home and office version 2003,
help or i'll have to go back to foxit!
    thanks,
    Georgie.

    Hi and thank you!
I had a trial of Adobe a year ago, maybe more. It did the same thing then i remember. Then i bought the Foxit subscription and completely got rid of adobe and the cursor issue went away. I am 100% sure it was the Adobe download that did it.

  • Sending in iPAD for servicing

Is there a way to mail in my iPAD WIFI for warranty replacement if it becomes faulty ?

Right now my iPAD 16GB WIFI set is from USA, under the https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do url. i type in my serial no and selected a different country : Australia.
It stated there is "service options available for this product in the location you've selected."
Does this mean i can get my iPAD serviced in Australia from Apple Service centre?

  • Office 2008 for Mac: Any advice on where to get it cheaper for a student?

I am about to go into my Master's Degree at Dallas Theological Seminary and I need to get Office 2008 for Mac. The Apple store recommended me get it at my school but my school's bookstore does not have it and journeyed.com doesn't support DTS. Does anyone know how or where I can get this program for less than $100 with a student discount? I really need to know.

    Remember... Google is your friend.

Also, be aware that this is a forum for troubleshooting compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows, and that Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products are the best place to post Office related questions. Good luck...

  • Should i send my ipod for service?

I have some issues with my ipod atm.
-Ipod goes into (please use itunes to restore ipod...) after being switched on. It happens after being switched off after awhile.
-Freeze during playback. (At the now playing screen)
-Ipod freezes and needs reset when scrolling/browsing the ipod too fast.
I have tried the latest itunes to restore the ipod countless times but the problems above still persist.

Try uninstalling, then reinstalling the latest version of iTunes. after that, go to Apple Software Updater in your Programs list, and do all the updates you can, then restart your computer. Plug in your iPod, then try restoring it in "Disk Mode", to put it in Disk Mode, turn hold on and off, then hold the Menu+Select buttons simultaneously. When the Apple logo pops up (before the backlight turns on, now be quick!), hold Play+Pause simultaneously until your iPod looks like an old school iPod. Then plug it in and restore it using iTunes. Reply me the results when you are done.
    Hope this helps!!

  • I took my computer in for service just before the warranty expired now I have one question and can't get any help. The sound buttons on my keyboard no longer work

I installed the new Mavericks update on my MacBook Pro when it was released and offered free of charge. After that my computer started crashing on a regular basis, upon the realization that my warranty was due to expire at the end of the year I took my computer in to the Apple Store in Green Hills Mall about 5 days before Christmas. To anyone not familiar with Green Hills in Nashville TN the traffic is horrendous at all times let alone 5 days before Christmas. They had to send it off for service and it was shipped back to me on Christmas Eve. Through the holidays I haven't used it much. I usually just use it at work between customers and most of the time just leave it here. Friday evening I played videos with no problems, when I came back in on Monday and played a video the sound had decreased dramatically and the volume control keys on my keyboard would not work. I don't know if they were working before because I don't remember if I used them or not since Monday was the first time the volume was so low. Now my warranty is expired and I am very poor ( The I have a job, a roof over my head and food to eat but a negative balance in checking account and bills still to pay kind of poor) so I am hoping that someone out there knows what's causing this and how to fix it.

Mavericks has had a lot of compatability issues and are slowly being fixed.  This is why I haven't upgraded yet.
Either downgrade back to Mountain Lion or just wait for a software fix.

  • My Macbook Pro is about 4 to 5 years old.  I've noticed the last few months that speed was becoming much slower.  It slowed to a crawl last week and won't even turn on now.  Where do I take this to near Jackson, Michigan for service?.

My Macbook Pro is about 4 to 5 years old.  I've noticed the last few months that speed was becoming much slower.  It slowed to a crawl last week and won't even turn on now.  Where can I take my Macbook Pro for service near Jackson, Michigan?.

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Send in for Service

My ipad will not accept my charger.  I constantly get the message "Charging not...with this accessory."  I've replaced the cord and adapter a few times.  In any event, I followed the online steps to send it in for service but each time I get to the page where it reads "Select the part you want to replace" I am unable to move forward as none of the hyperlinks on the page work.  Does anyone know how to get past this or how to send my ipad in for service without using the web site?

  • Send in for service procedure

i have sucessfully received a service tag number and have been requested to send device in for service
what is the procedure do i take it to apple
or do they send me out a box
    thanks

I think this depends if it's personal or business/education. If it's a personal device I believe you would just take it to the Apple store for repair. If this is business/education device they send you a box to ship the device in.

  • Sending material outside for repair

    All SAP Gurus,
We want to send some material outside our company premises for maintenance work.
For this I have made a service PO.
Now, how to send this material out (which mvt. Type to be used)?
And after wards how to take it back
    Regards,

    Hi Rajan,
Please go thru the link Provided below:
    http://www.sap123.com/showthread.php?t=52
I have gone thru the link but Fortunately i havenot found any information regarding sending material outside for services.
If you want to use Service po then you have only two options:
Either Send the material using MB1B 541 Movement type (If Negative Stock are allowed because for service items you may not found stock)
Or Handle the Scenario out of SAP. That means Send Directly to the Service Provider without using SAP.

  • P1i dead after running Update Service - any suggestions

    Hi
My P1i appears completly dead after running Update Service.  I've tried removing the battery, fully charging the battery etc.  When i run Update Service again it just says my phone is up-to-date.
    any suggestions?

Unfortunately, in this case, we would only be able to suggest sending the handset for service. Usually when running the Update Service, you should get the option for EXIT but also for INSTALL when you are advised that you have the latest software. If you do not have this, the handset may need to be flashed by an engineer.
If you wish to do this, I'd recommend contacting your local support team to be advised of your nearest service location. Contact details can be found here:
