Server not receiving email

I am having problems getting my mail server to receive any mail.
The MX record was set up 3 days ago, but an MX record lookup shows it as
0 www.sciencematrix.com
so it should work, right? Does the 'www' at the front mess it up at all?
Checking the account from an email client does not give any errors, but messages sent to it never show up.
postconf -n gives me:
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases,hash:/var/mailman/data/aliases
command_directory = /usr/sbin
config_directory = /etc/postfix
daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix

What could be wrong here?
How can I send an email from the command line, to make sure the mailboxes are set up correctly?

Perhaps it should work.
There's quite a number of variables here and we'll need far more detail to be able to help you
Some questions: POP or IMAP is enabled, as is SMTP in Server Admin ?
What does: hostname
return (answer with) ?
If you're behind a router, have you assigned port-forwarding and checked your firewall rules ? And if so, have you configured internal DNS ?
What do you see in /var/log/mail.log and /var/log/system.log for a time-period in which you were expecting incoming mail ?
A couple other things:
Your mailserver shouldn't really be calling itself "www" anything, that's web services not mail.
You can in fact configure DNS such that your machine is sciencematrix.com
with it also answering for mail.sciencematrix.com and www.sciencematrix.com
Try the following:
telnet sciencematrix.com 25
if you don't get an answer try
telnet your.servers.ip 25
You should see:
Connected to www.sciencematrix.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 sciencematrix.com ESMTP Postfix
From there, reference here:

(just the part on testing via telnet)

    Hi Beigi,
According to your description, I understand that Exchange cannot received the message from Gmail, however others works well.
    Great checklist from Hotaka.
Additional, I want to double confirm whether any other antivirus and protection software in your environment, also the
    Anti-Spam
    or
Transport rule settings, for example sensitive words, IP block list and attachment filter, so that the message from external trigger constraints and be rejected. Meanwhile, please double check in OWA.
Besides, please use message tracking log to get more details for this issue. It’s more helpful to narrow down the problem, for your reference:

  • XServe Mail Server not receiving emails from our phone system

    Hi everyone,
Since late last year, staff haven't been receiving email notificiations to their work email (hosted by a 10.5.8 Xserve) of voice mail received by our 3COM NBX Phone System. However, if they provide any other email account, such as a Gmail account, they receive the email fine.
Our firewall providers have confirmed that there is nothing stopping the emails going in and out on their end. I've checked the server mail logs and can't find anything of value.
According to a forum thread, this is how our mail system sends an off-site notification via email:
1 - NCP performs an MX record lookup using DNS server IP information to return a valid TCP/IP address for each message being sent
2 - NCP acts as an MTA (Message Transfer Agent) - will directly contact each destination mail server for local delivery
3 - NCP establishes a TCP socket to the resolved TCP/IP address on SMTP port 25
4 - NCP must be able to open a TCP session to the resolved IP address of each destination email server
5 - Each destination server the NBX is sending email to may be configured for a rule base and based on certain criteria my reject an email or attachment that other email servers accept.
I'd appreciate any help you can provide.
    Thankyou,
    Rhys

I have no way of issuing that command from the "netSet".
Below is the link I found of the self service article on troubleshooting offsite notifications:
    http://knowledge.3com.com/service/main.jsp;jsessionid=5CC7B2440667382AC7190A9665 9AC61D.selfservice1?t=solutionTab&ft=searchTab&ps=solutionPanels&locale=enUS&_dyncharset=UTF-8&curResURL=%2Fservice%2Fmain.jsp%3Bjsessionid%3D5CC7B2440667 382AC7190A96659AC61D.selfservice1%3FSearchButton%3DFind%26_dyncharset%3DUTF-8%26 locale%3DenUS%26t%3DsearchTab%26useFocusTopic%3Dtrue%26focusTopic%3D9029739%26searchstring% 3DNBX%252520-%252520Is%252520NAT%252520Supported%253f%26sfield%3D%26dosearch%3Dt rue%26pn%3D4&solutionId=1802&isSrch=Yes
I've tested the internal settings, the dig as we've established, and I've checked the server logs - they don't seem to show anything relating to the nbx.
The firewall has port 25 open to our mail server and phone system only.

  • Using osx 10.7.5 can send but not receive emails. Mail server support rep tried everything

Using iMac with OSX 10.7.5. Can send but not receive emails. No problem with internet account. Server rep tried everything and suggested perhaps a corrupted file in the op syst. Any ideas?

You may have a corrupt preference. Mail - Preferences - Accounts - click the offending account and re-enter all prefereneces. Also you can use Apple's OS X Mail: Troubleshooting sending and receiving email messages located at:

  • Not receiving emails from pop server

I'm not receiving emails from my workplace which is a pop server. We use shaw cable for our Internet

It might be that the server needs to be altered so that a copy remains on it long enough to be accessed by all devices.

  • I am not receiving emails from a static IP address becasue icloud server thinks its spam when it isn't

I am not receiving emails only from on preson. they get a message bumped back to them indicating that there is a DHCP block from there static IP address. What I gather is the icloud server thinks these emails are spam coming from the IP address so it's blocking it. How do you unblock it becasue it's not spam?

the email provider is icloud.com email address. It has blocked a specific static IP address that is a customer I do regular business with. I get all other emails just fine. I event sent an email to myself from my work email which is from a static DHCP server and  it went through with no problems. It appears the icloud server has blocked a specific IP address because they think it's spam or something in a title of an email may have looked like it had illegal content. So I guess the email provider is Apple? Who do you contact? I know that they can change this by unmasking the IP address.

  • Can not receive emails from third party email accounts

Recently I started working for a small business which has small business server 2011 and exchange 2010 installed. Before I started there were eight user accounts and they all have unlimited email access. I created a few users through sbs AD and also from
exchange console a week ago. Unfortunately none of them can not receive emails from third party accounts. they all can receive internal emails and also can send mails to any email accounts internally and externally.
This is a night mare for me as new users are having trouble with communicating via mails. I have tried all the methods and now thought of posting this issue on tech net. Please help me on this!!
    Thanks a lot!!
    Sammy

Checklist for testing inbound email problems, I am assuming outbound emails works ok.
    1. Check Port 25 forwarding on all modems routers/firewalls
    2. MX Record is created and pointing to the correct Public IP Address, use MXToolbox.com to verify MX Record and test SMTP flow. Also Verify your public IP has not changed, use whatsmyip.org to check you public IP
    3. If using POP Connector Service, make sure POP accounts are created properly
    4. If using a 3rd party spam host, make sure they forward email to correct public IP address, use step 2 to verify your public IP.

  • I can send but not receive email

Hello All. I know this is a highly posted topic but I cannot find a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Basic Problem- I can send but not receive email.
My ISP is. Yahoo SBC Global
    I have a 3rd party email provider: 1and1.com
I have set my preferences according to the specifications of 1and1.com
The error I get is this: The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server "pop.1and.com" failed.
I have a Macbook Pro, running 10.4.9. My account with the 3rd party email provider is new and only has 1 or two emails in the account. I know this because I can log on via the internet and use their website to check the emails in the inbox. So the "email" address is working. I just can't get it to forward to my laptop.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with port 110 being blocked by my ISP. But I really don't think they are blocking that port. Due to the fact that my previous computer was a dell, and I used a similar 3rd party provider to email, the account used port 110 and things worked fine.
    Thanks to all.

    Ok. I've got it working.
All I did was delete my account information from the preferences. Before, I was editing it.
I entered a completely new POP account and it started working. I have a hard time believing that I entered information incorrectly prior to this because I checked it, rechecked it had a friend check it and it all looked OK. I was copy and pasting information anyway.
However, once I deleted and re- entered a brand new account, it worked fine.
Ernie, thanks for replying to my emails! I appreciate it.

  • Not receiving email? Check your modem/router!!!

Hi all. My Logoc board fried last week and server/mail server was offline for that time. Everything worked up to that point. When I got the server back from the genious bar with a new logic board mail and web refused to work. I could send email and surf the web but could not receive email or visit my website from outside my subnet. After 3 three days of checking and tweaking everything from D.N.S> to mail settings, firewall settings I decided to check my Modem. It is a 2wire 2701HGB. What I saw astounded me. All the firewall settings That had allowed the incoming connections no longer had the public I.P. back to my server. It had deleted it, on its own. So if you have has a similar problem check your modem. It could save you a lot of grief. Everything works just like it used to now.
    Best,
    emackiii

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
If you aren't receiving the email to your rescue email account (and you've checked the spam folder on the account as well as the inbox, and tried clicking the reset link again) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.

  • Not receiving Email

I am not receiving email.  I am running System 10.6.8 on a MacBook Air.
Email takes a long time to 'load' followed by  an error message, shown below, on each of my 4 accounts, 2 AOL and 2 Gmail.  Each account is 'imap'.  The 2 Gmail account have the same error message.
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “******” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “imap.aol.com” on port 993 timed out.
I have emptied the cache in Safari.
I am, however, able to receive email from these accounts on my iPad.

Are you using Safari (using web access to your email) or are you setting the accounts up in the mail application? With Safari you probably just have to have the right userid and password, there are probably no settings right?
With the mail tool, I'd verify that your email address and password are correct by actually trying web access for gmail on safari just to make sure they're right. if you're like me, you have a million userids and passwords and it's easy to mistake one for another. Once you have done that, I'd delete the accounts in Mail and try re-adding them starting with the gmail accounts. It should set the all up for you.
Also remember if you don't have an internet connection you could get an error as well. I'm sure someone else will pipe up with the Apple document for troubleshooting mail.

  • New ISP - not receiving email

I have a relative with an eMac running 10.3.9. She recently switched to a new ISP and is not receiving email in Mail. She has to use web mail to retrieve it. Sent mail goes out ok from Mail, web-surfing works. She revised the account information in the previous email account in Mail, typing in the new email address, password and server info. I believe the problem is that she should create a new email account in Mail and disable the old account (archive and delete). Any ideas to resolve the incoming email issue? I will try my idea tonight and report whether it works or not.

    Hi RarelyDan,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
You may wish to try the troubleshooting tips found in Apple's Mail Help:
"If you can't receive email, try the following:
    ▪ Send yourself a test email. The mail has to go out through your outgoing mail server and back into your incoming mail server. This is a good basic test of your account and server information.
    ▪ Make sure your computer can perform other Internet tasks, such as opening a webpage. If not, choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Network. Choose Network Status from the Show pop-up menu. A green dot indicates that you are connected to the Internet or a network. If you aren't connected, go to the Finder and choose Help > Mac Help, then search for "Connecting to the Internet."
    ▪ Choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts. Verify your account name and password. Your account name will usually be either your email address ([email protected]) or the part of your email address to the left of the "@" (tclark3). If your Internet service provider (ISP) lets you access your email via a web browser, you may be able to verify your name and password there. If the same information does not work using a web browser or your ISP doesn't offer a web-based mail option, confirm your user name and password with your ISP or network administrator. Remember to type your email password, not your Mac OS X user account password or ISP password (if different).
    ▪ Find out if you can reach your incoming mail server from your computer. Open Network Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and click Ping. Ping is a simple network testing tool that shows whether a server computer is running and can be reached from your computer. Type the mail server name (such as mail.mac.com) or IP address in the address field, and click Ping. If you see 10 repeating lines, then the server can be reached. If you see a message such as "ping: unknown host bogus.apple.com," then the server is either down or unreachable.
    ▪ Mail works with the following account types: POP, IMAP, .Mac, and Exchange (only if configured as an IMAP server). You can't log in directly to Hotmail, AOL, or any service that does not support POP or IMAP access, and retrieve email using Mail.
    ▪ If you have an IMAP account, it may be placed "offline" if Mail can't access it. Choose Mailbox > Online Status. If you see the choices Go Online or Take Account Online, connect to the Internet, and then choose Mailbox > Online Status > Go Online.
    ▪ Make sure there is no firewall software blocking email traffic. A firewall works by selectively blocking network traffic. Mac OS X has a built-in firewall, which you turn on and off using the Sharing pane of System Preferences. Open System Preferences and click Sharing, then click Firewall. Make sure your firewall is off.
    ▪ You may be affected by another firewall, either software installed separately from Mac OS X or built into an Internet sharing router, or administered by your ISP or network administrator. Contact the appropriate person to find out whether a firewall may be in place.
    ▪ If you have changed options (such as Use SSL or Authentication) in the Advanced pane of your email account preferences, check with your ISP or system administrator for the correct settings."
post back if still no luck or you have additional questions or comments,

  • User not receiving email / corrupt database?

Much like another recent post, I have a user that can not receive email the emails just sit in the queue.
The error on those messages is "[[email protected]]: temporary failure"
    Here are the twists:
    1) We had a power spike a couple of days ago. The user's UPS failed and his machine lost power completely. He rebooted and everything else was fine, but he has not received an e-mail since then.
    2) When looking at the list of users on the Server Admin > Mail > Maintenance > Accounts screen, the list in the database stops at the person BEFORE this particular user. They're alphabetical, obviously, so everyone after this person are not listed at all - 13 total missing accounts.
The kicker is that the rest of us are still receiving e-mail normally!
    Thoughts?!
    Details:
    Mac Xserve running 10.4.11
    Dual 2GHz, and 2GB RAM
Keep in mind I am NOT a born tech person, have a mild to moderate comfort level with a command-line prompt, and no native intuition for any of this.
    Thanks!
    -Rita

I'm the consultant that fixed MNX04's server, but it took several attempts.
the Cyrus reconstruct command failed to resolve the issue, and even removing the user using cyradm, and re-creating them in Workgroup manager didn't fix the problem.
Pterobyte's mailbfr utility did the trick: mailbfr -f, wait awhile for the repair to run, and all was well.
I'm grateful for all the help pterobyte has given to people on this forum, but it concerns me a little bit that the Cyrus utilities built in to OS X server can't fix this sort of problem. (However, this is the first time I've run into a problem with OS X mail servers that the Cyrus reconstruct command couldn't fix.)

  • TS4002 Not receiving emails w/ attachments from a few of my existing contacts

This is a problem I just started having in the last couple weeks! I am not receiving emails w/ attachments from two of my every day mail contacts. Both of these people are with different organizations with different email accounts. If they send me an email without an attachment I receive it, but when they send one with an attachment, I don't even get a notification that they TRIED to send it! I have missed multiple emails from important business clients and my realtor! I have received hundreds of emails from these clients over the last 3 years. The attachments are simple PDF files so I know they are not exceeding the limit. They do not show up on the iCloud site, in my Mail app, or on my iPhone.
I have had several other contacts send me attachments which I receive as expected.
I have an @me.com account. Have had no complaints until now.
    Any help?

    Hi Tattoosleeve,
I suggest double check the Anti-Spam configuration if you have enabled it. More details in the following link:

  • 8330 not receiving email

    Hi,
I have three email accounts. Two of them are working fine, the third, my work email from Groupwise (but not an enterprise server) stopped receiving email two weeks ago.  The same thing happened to a colleague who has the same make and model Blackberry.  Nothing changed at work.  I and they have tried everything including reinstalling my email.   They checked the firewall at work as well. I am able to send email, but not able to receive it.
Has anyone else had this problem in the last two weeks?

  • User not receiving emails regarding approval notifications

    Hi,
SRM system has been upgraded to 5.0.
User is not receiving emails regarding Approval notifications. However, the user is able to view the SCs pending for his approval in his approval list.
I checked the transmission of the emails, the approval notifications are sucessfuly sent and the email of the user is correctly maintained. I tried resending the emails, and the user didnt receive emails even then.
Could be please advice what could the error.
    Thanks
    Hemanth

    Hello Hemanth Kumar,
    If approval mail:
    - is correctly generated,
    - you can see it in SOST transaction,
    - request status in SOST is OK,
this means SAPconnect is working fine, so your problem does not come from SAP.
You have to check your STMP gateaway and your mail server.
    Regards.
    Laurent.
