Setup Windows 2012R2 DataCenter as DC ?

Hello,
We have recently acquired windows 2012R2 DataCenter and we plan to migrate our windows 2008 FSMO server.
My concern is: should I setup the Windows 2012R2 DataCenter as domain controler and assign to it the FSMO roles? Or should I create a virtual server (in data center)  which will hold the FSMO roles?
What are the Microsoft recommandations or the best practices?
Best regards,

Hi, My concerne is not the virtualization. I will ask my question differently. Can I setup my Windows Data Center on the physical server as the fsmo domain controller? Is that recommanded or not? Thanks
Hello,
yes, you can.
If you spend that amount of money for Windows Server DataCenter license and just use this for a single machine as DC it is highly over-payed but could be used of course.
For a DC on physical hardware i would recommend a Standard edition.
To add the new OS DC please see

    Hi Kenneth,
Here for your case suggest you to configure RDP session time limit so that your user can disconnect\log off once the specific time limit reached.
You can setup the session time limit in different method.
    1. Open the Server Manager, select Remote Desktop Services.
    2. In Remote desktop Services, in right side you can drop down to collections.
    3. Select the collection which you want to edit the settings.
    4. Under collections Properties, select Task and then Edit Properties.
    5. In Properties dialog box, select Session.
    6. You can find all thetimeout settings under session collection properties; edit according to your requirements and then OK.
And apart also by group policy setting as below.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    -  Set time limit for disconnected sessions
    -  Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  End session when time limits are reached
Please check which setting suitable for your environment and you can apply for your case.

  • Live Migration with Different CPU versions on the hosts, win 2012R2 Datacenter

    Hello
This question have been asked in different forums but when I read the the thread's I feel that I get mixed answers.
And most answers are dating from 2012 (Win 2008R2), I don't know if they are still correct in win 2012R2.
So now I ask the question myself and hope to get at clear answer :)
We are in the process of installing a new Hyper-V cluster using Win srv 2012 R2 Datacenter as OS.
I'm planning to re-use some of the "old" servers from our current Hyper-V 2008 R2 cluster, removing it from the cluster and do a clean installation of 2012R2 Datacenter.
But I will need to buy two new servers to manage this (with a new version of CPU, same brand (AMD))
Old server: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6172 (12 Cores)
    New server:
    AMD Opteron™ 6344 (12-core)
    Now my question:
Will Live Migration work between these servers in my new cluster without me doing any special settings in hyper-v or in the VM or what do I need to do to get this to work?
    /Anders

    Hi,
It is important that all the hardware supporting Windows Server 2012 Failover Clusters be certified to work with Windows Server 2012.
In a cluster where all the nodes of the cluster are exactly the same, hardware migration is fairly straightforward. There are no concerns about differences in hardware, and
especially no concerns about different capabilities of the CPUs.

  • Windows 2012 Datacenter R2 - Network Connections Confusion

I have recently created a 2012 Datacenter install with the goal to create virtualize test lab.
As part of the install two connections were created:
    1. Labeled 'Ethernet' with Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch protocol enabled.
2 Labeled 'Network 2' vEthernet (....Controller - Virtual Switch) with the standard networking protocols enabled.
    3. Network 2 interface is connected to the local area network.
Ethernet adapter vEthernet (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - Virtual Switch):
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter #2
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : BC-5F-F4-3B-11-EE
    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100(Preferred)
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
I am confused with the purpose of the network connection "Ethernet" and Hyper-Virtual Switch protocol and how this relates the "network 2" interface. I uncertain which network connection is the physical connections.
I have tried to research this with "windows 2012 datacenter network connection configuration, setup, and etc.",  the results are a lot of the complex examination of setting of Hyper-V implementation, clusters, DHCP, and etc.
I hoping to locate information that will explain the fundamentals of these related technologies (tutorial, youtube videos, etc.).  Any helpful advice is welcome.

    Hi,
Based on the information which you provide, you created an External virtual switch, which binds to the physical network adapter so that virtual machines can access a physical network.
->I am confused with the purpose of the network connection “Ethernet” and Hyper-Virtual Switch protocol and how this relates the “network 2” interface. I uncertain which network connection is the physical connections.
->Network 2 interface is connected to the local area network.
Based on your description, I suppose that you encountered some problems with understanding virtual network switch. When we install Hyper-V and create an external virtual network, the management operating system uses a new virtual network
adapter to connect to the physical network. The network connections consist of the original network adapter and the new virtual network adapter. The original physical network adapter does not have anything bound to it. However, the virtual network adapter
has all of the standard protocols and services bound to it. Here, the “vEthernet” is the new virtual network adapter, and the “Ethernet” was the original physical network adapter. Hyper-V binds the Virtual Network Service Protocol to the physical network adapter
when an external virtual network is created. So the “Ethernet” has the Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch only. The physical adapter was equal to a virtual switch at this moment, all networking traffic is routed though the virtual switch.
And to the physical machine, due to the physical adapter is a virtual switch now, so the new virtual network adapter is its network adapter now. So we can see the all TCP/IP configurations of vEthernet are the same with the local area
    network.
For more details about virtual network switch, please refer to the link below,

  • Mssqlserver 2014 backup to disk crashing host on windows 2012R2

Setting up updated mssqlserver host ( older dell R710 ) with windows 2012R2 std and SQL server 2012 Std edition with 96 gb Ram.
SQLserver is allocated 64 GB ram.
Our user database sizes are 650 Gb and 1.5 Tb .  Data devices reside  in DAS and we use Volume mount points.
While backing up the 650 Gb db to local disk in raid 5   separate from root disk it crashes the windows host.
We are using default compression for sql server 2014.
While setting up the sql server databases I did had to do "EnableLUA" in registry to continue to use local administrator login and  privilege for sqlserver.
    Any lead will be helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    M Paul

What error do you see in the system event log before the crash? Any disk related errors? Do you have system or user databases on the system drive? (select * from sys.master_files)
This is most likely I/O related hardware problem as SQL backups are I/O intensive. Can you setup Perfmon and try the backup (just to see what resources are being depleted just before the crash)

  • Sharepoint 2010 on Windows 2012R2 and claims based authentication

    Hello,
We have installed a sharepoint 2010 SP2 CU dec 2014 on a Windows 2012R2 server.
    The installation went without problems.
However, we want to use claims based authentication on a certain web app pool.
Therefore some configuration on IIS is required.
The first issue we ran into, is the web application pool uses ASP.NET 2.0, which is the default settings.
However, using this ASP.NET Version 2.0 the feature "Providers" and ".net users" are invisible.
When changing the .net version to 4.0, the features comes back again.
I can fill in the connection strings without problem.
The providers feature however, gives me the following errors:
There is a duplicate .... sections defined.
When googling on this error, it seems that on .net 4.0 these sections are already globbally defined in the machine.config, So i removed these entries in the machine.config
These are the lines that are "double"
    <section name="scriptResourceHandler" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingScriptResourceHandlerSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false"
    allowDefinition="MachineToApplication"/>
    <section name="jsonSerialization" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingJsonSerializationSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false" allowDefinition="Everywhere"
    />
    <section name="profileService" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingProfileServiceSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication"
    />
    <section name="authenticationService" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingAuthenticationServiceSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false"
    allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" />
So after removing these lines, i can get into Providers feature in IIS.
but, when i click on "Add..." i get the following error:
    Add Provider
There was an error while performing this operation.
    Details:
This method cannot be called during the application's pre-start initialization phase.
    OK
I spent to much time already to solve this issue and i hope  that someone can give me some advice to address this issue.

In running the Dunning Wizard process we have designed the Dunning Letter forms thru PLD.  Our customer has activated the Dunning Levels - Setup Window thru the Main Menu Form Settings.  The Dunning Wizard now does not print the forms as designated in the PLD.  It seems to be picking from the three default forms associated with the Dunning Levels - Setup Window.  How do you de-activate this window?

Could you check which template is set as Default for each of the levels.
There are Dunning Level 01 (template DLN0), Dunning Level 02 (template DLN2), .. so on
In the Print layout selection window make sure you have the correct template set as default.

    Hello,
We have an Windows 2012R2 RDS environment with Outlook 2013 installed. Currently we are experiencing some issues with the preview handler for non-administrator users. With an Administrator account it is working without issues.
All users that open WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT or other office applications see the following error:
This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer:
    Word/Excel/Powerpoint
To open this file in its own program, double-click it.
Other programs like Windows Media Player (voicemail messages), Image viewer, Notepad are working.
Any idea what we can do to make this work?
    Thanks.
    Max

    Hi Max,
    Thanks for your information.
After doing some research, this behavior might be related a DCOM permission. I suggest checking this point:
    1. Go to Component Services and Open it.
    2. Expand Component Services, click on Computers, then right click on My Computer and go to “properties".
    3. Click on Default Properties tab, and make sure the following is set:
    Default Authentication Level: Connect
    Default Impersonation Level: Identify
If it’s a permission issue, we can use process monitor to get the logs.

  • Can I upgrade Server 2012R2 Standard to 2012R2 Datacenter while in a failover cluster?

I would like to know if it is supported to upgrade my Server 2012R2 Standard to 2012R2 Datacenter while in a failover cluster. I have a 3 node cluster all running Server 2012R2 standard with only a few VM's running on them at this time.
    -Jim

Should be no problem. There are no technical differences between Standard and Datacenter. The difference is in the licensing.
I would evict a node, upgrade it, and add it back in.  Rinse and repeat.

  • Error: 0x800f0922 when trying to install NFS Server Feature on Windows 2012R2

I'm trying to install the "Server for NFS" option under the File and Storage Services role on a Windows 2012R2 server, but I keep receiving an 0x800f0922 error. I've tried the install via the GUI and Powershell. I've also tried using the

Thank you for the help!  I did try the suggested steps, but the issue persisted.  I was able to resolve the issue by removing software on the server that was using the NFS ports needed for successful installation of the native NFS server.
In our case it was an optional component of our backup software called"Veeam backup vPower NFS".   There is also a known issue with the Qlogic's SanSurfer software using the NFS ports.
There were entries in the System event log that tipped me off:

  • Limiting Memory Usage of Exchange 2010sp1 store.exe on a Windows 2012r2 Server?

    Hello,
I am running Windows 2012r2 Server with Exchange 2010sp1, 1 forest and 6 mailboxes. So this is not a heavy load for Exchange 2010sp1 to handle. The problem is the Windows 2012r2 server is also used as a file storage server. The problem is the Exchange 2010sp1
is using most of the 16GB of ram available and slowing down the server. Is it possible to limit the Exchange 2010sp1 store.exe to use less memory and if so what are the steps in Windows 2012r2 to complete this task.
I have read that it can be done through ADSI Edit. But the steps they explain are not for Windows 2012r2 and do not match.
    Thank You,
    Stan

    Hi Stan,
Did you change msExchESEparamCacheSizeMax and msExchESEparamCacheSizeMin both attribute of Information Store?
    Start ADSIEDIT.msc Navigate to Configuration > Services > Microsoft Exchange > <Organization Name> > Administrative Groups > <Administrative Group> > Servers > <Server Name> > InformationStore
    http://eightwone.com/2011/04/06/limiting-exchange-2010-sp1-database-cache/
That ADSIEdit path shouldn't be different on Windows 2012 R2 because it doesn't depend on operating system and it should be always same in Configuration partition of Active Directory.
    Besides....
Exchange 2010 SP1 (and SP2) is not supported now so suggest you upgrade to SP3. http://blogs.technet.com/b/rmilne/archive/2013/01/04/end-of-exchange-2010-sp1-support.aspx

when i try to add the Domain Services role it failed in the Feature installation phase
i even tried to provide an alternate location from a ISO source but that didn't help either
im lost here what should i do?
    i attached the fail screenshot
    Thanks
    Guy

What error is shown in Event Viewer when the install fails?
Is it the first 2012 R2 DC in a lower level domain?
    Try installing ADDS via PowerShell:
    Import-Module ServerManager
    Install-windowsfeature -name AD-Domain-Services –IncludeManagementTools
The other thing that it could be is an issue with the WID (Windows Internal Database)
Check in the Event Viewer for anything to do with Service: MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID and perhaps try this:
Adjust your domain (or domain controller if appropriate) security policy to allow “NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID” to log on as a service, a GPO setting that can be found under Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings
    > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment.

  • Hyper V Integration Components of Windows 2012R2

    Hi Team,
I am receiving the above error during installation of Hyper Integration Components of Windows 2012R2.
VM OS is windows 2008 std Sp2
    Hyper is WIndows 2012 R2.
I have created a VM from Physical server to Virtual.
    Please suggest me the solution

    Hi Sr ,
    You were using disk2vhd to P2V ?
Did you try to install integration services offline ?
Please refer to the  article below :
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2013/04/19/how-to-install-integration-services-when-the-virtual-machine-is-not-running.aspx
Before doing this please try to copy the VHD to another VM and test .
    Best Regards
    Elton Ji
