Slow Infinity

Hi I upgraded from broadband to Bt Infinity and on day of connection I got a download speed of 37mb and since then my speed keeps droping to 7.7mb.
When I rang Bt I got usual script but managed to get an enginer apointment but not till a week later,my exchange is only round the corner from me and should get full 77mb so in effect im getting 1 tenth of what I should and basicly the same speed as most standed broadband.
I know new connections need to stabilise but the speed should increase from connection speed not drop so drasticly, and for the cost BT honestly think its right that we pay full price for a service that to be honest is a joke, then expect you to wait over a week for an enginer to look into it when the service was just connected.
every speed check compleated shows different speeds from 27mb then within seconds 9mb to its slowest so far of 7.7mb,this is not stabilisation this is a major issue.
Now what seems to puzzle me is that when I had standed broadband I had same issue with speed getting slower to a point that I went from 14mb to a stable 5.5mb and was contantly told this is within paramiters and no faults found but hey its happening again now with infinity.(Do BT honestly think that our old phone lines that come into our homes might not be the problem and possibley chec and replace when installing this new fast internet becouse there seems to be far too many people with the same problems that dont seem to get a permanent fix.
I would be interested in any ones responce to this and if they are or have in the past the same issues.

Hi just did more speed tests and got 38mb then immediately set it to test again and came back with 9mb this is crazy either BTs own speed tester is messed up or my connection has been duff from point of first connected to Infinity.
Why why did I think this would resolve my standed broadband issues of the same problem.

I have had bt business infinity broadband for several weeks now. It has never been very fast but now it is even slower. My speedtest results vary from 2mb per sec to 6 mb per sec. I was hoping for nearer 20mb per sec or even the 76 mbps advertised! Any ideas what i can do to improve this?

  • Ultra Slow Infinity

    Hi
I have had Infinity Option 2 since April, and when it was first installed I got 37mb download and 8-9mb upload, however over time it slowed right down, but a reboot of the router and hub would usually restore the speed.  Over the past month, the download speed has decreased steadily, and the upload speed has reduced to at best 3.98mb, but more often than not is less than 1mb.  Over the past fortnight or so, there has been a significant drop in speed, both up and down (see the attached graph)  Tonight, I have an download speed of 0.72Mbps and an upload speed of 0.21Mbps.  Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how I can get back to the origional speeds I had?

    Hi Trevor and welcome.
What I would do first is....
Connect your laptop to the HH3 via an ethernet lead and run the FTTC diagnostic part of the speed test http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
    And note your IP settings.
Being wired this removes any possible wireless issues and will give you your IP Internet Profile which will be useful if you have to contact the Forum Mods for help.
The IP is the profile setting the exchange has set you on to provide a reliable broadband.
If your IP settings are low with resulting download achieved speeds you could try forcing an IP reset.
Turn off both the Openreach Modem and HH3 and after a minute or two back on again.
You then need to run the BT speedtester again to see if the IP has changed.
(However there is a 1 hour delay between tests)
You could try the BT Beta 40Mbps test part as that may not need the 1 hour delay.
Or in the meantime try the http://www.speedtest.net/ and see if speeds have improved.
One variation of speed problem is when the IP setting drops very low and the achieved download is correspondingly low.
The other variation of speed problem could be the IP setting remain high (eg 38716Kbps) but the achieved download speed is very low.
Carry out these tests and add the results to your thread, if things have not improved I would seek help from the BT forum Mods with this form http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
And add a copy of this threads URL to the contact form so they can see the background to the problem.
The Mods are very helpful and will contact you, may take 72hrs or so due their workload.
Btw it's best not to turn off the BT Openreach White Modem too often as this may be recognised as a line problem by the DLM Exchange Monitoring equipment with a corresponding reduction in IP (speed).
    Good Luck
My test result example below shows
IP Profile for your line is -38717 Kbps.... 38Mbps download max speed setting.
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 2000 Kbps.... Upload capped at 2Mbps as I am on Infinity option 1.

  • Slow Infinity and incompetent staff.

My Infinity has been slow for almost 2 weeks now. Getting "speeds" of 2-8mbps. It used to be 20+.
I've been trying to get this fixed.
Firstly it took BT ages to understand I am not availible before 7pm as I am in work.
Then when I went through online to chat to a technical advisor they said my profile had not been updated and an engineer will be sent to fix it. They did that and it's still slow.
Last night at 8.55pm they phoned only to say there's an error on their system and can they call back tomorrow.
They've just called saying it my be a faulty ADSL filter and to plug in my spare one. I said I'll have to go find it and try it.
They said they'll call back tomorrow.
I found the filter and got to my phone socket only to find with fire optic broadband an ADSL filter isn't even used as there are 2 sockets, 1 for the phone and an added on one that was attacted when the Infinity was installed. Surely the staff should know how these systems are set up!
If this isn't fixed by Saturday I'll be going over to Virgin.

  • Slow Infinity, Urmston Manchester

Since yesterday morning my BT Infinity has been very slow. I reported the issue through this forum and via the proper contact form yesterday, but have heard nothing back.
Loading basic web pages is either very slow or won't work at all. I'm posting this from my phone on 3G. A search of my landline number on the BT site suggests a known fault in the area. Is this a standard message though, or is work actually being done to rectify a known issue in the area? Any information on this would be useful.

  • Slow Infinity speed on Xbox, PS3 and Sky despite h...

I have recently switched from Sky to BT and have a BT Infinity 2 package. My computer is working well and achieves a very good speed - 76Mps down. I am delighted with this. However, despite all my devices being 'hard wired' via ethernet I am getting very slow dowload speeds on my xbox, ps3 and Sky HD box.
Sky Anytime + Takes over an hour to be ready to play an SD movie
Iplayer constantly buffers on PS3 and Xbox
A 56mb File on Xbox live takes 10+ minutes to download (dread to think how long a large file would take!)
I have tried swapping the ports and cables and have tried resetting the homehub. There are no faults on the line and I have had an engineer look at the installation.
I am now very frustrated as when I was with sky on an 8mb connection I had no problems at all with all my devices.
Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would be really grateful them as I am thinking of going back to what worked!
    Thanks

Can you also post the full results from BT Speedtest speedtester.bt.com
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

  • Very slow infinity

Having only having infinity for only two weeks I'm not impressed! Started off great then for the last week speeds have been dire! Phoned support, they changed the wireless setting, I've reset the hub to no avail! Please sort BT or I'm going back to talktalk

Is it Infinity 1 or Infinity 2.
Was it a self install or installed by an engineer.
Does your slow speeds happen only on wireless or does it happen on a wired connection.
Can you run this checker and post back a screen shot of the results
    http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
and use this speed tester then carry out the further diagnostics and post back a screen shot of all the results including your IP profile for up and down. This test must be done with a wired connection.

As you will probably have a Homehub 5 can you also post the stats from 1-12 by logging onto the homehub management pages then troubleshooting > helpdesk. http://bthomehub.home/

  • Very slow Infinity on XP PC

I have recently had BT Infinity installed - My connection speeds through wifi on my Windows 7 laptop are fine as was my wired router connection to my XP PC, but the wired connection has suddenly slowed down to less that 1Mb/s. I have tried a different ethernet cable and different router sockets with no improvements. Any ideas?

Download and run TCPOptimiser, set your speed on the slider, tick modify all network adapters, select optimal then hit the OK button and reboot PC.
It's a well know problem with XP.

  • Very slow Infinity speeds

Hi. New non geeky member in desperation. Signed up for Bt infinity base package in Nov 2013  and was quite pleased it. I hadnt checked my speed lately although had the impression it was getting slower. So been checking over the last few days at different times and download speed has been averaging out at about 4.8 Mbps. sent BT email and had a call from help centre last night to advise trying www.speedtest.wholesale.com which I have done at various times today. I checked on both my Desktop and Laptop using cable with wireless turned off and resuults were all about the same:-
    4.92 Download
    Max achievable 5.03
    Accepable range  20Mbps-5.03Mbps
    0.74 Upload
    Upstream rate profile is 10
My computers are both up to recommended specs. I am using a BT homehub 5,  about 1 Km from the BT exchange and 50 metres from the green cabinet.
Having said I am no geek I would appreciate some help I could understand please.

  • Super slow Infinity 1

I wonder if anyone can help me please?
I have had Infinity 1 for about a year or so. It was great for a long time - we were getting the full 38Mbs and sometimes more.
Recently I noticed we were getting slow downloads and watching anything on youtube became impossible - a couple of seconds would play, then it'd stop completely for 10 or more seconds, then play another couple. We ran a speed test and are getting 1.83Mbs! No wonder!
I reported this to BT via their website on Sunday night. I hadn't been contacted so rang them this evening. They have booked an engineer to come around Monday. I don't intend to get into my views on the customer support - just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar?
Thanks for any thoughts and input!

    Thanks for the quick reply.....
Here is the result from the first link. I have never used a wired connection previously so havent run the second one.

  • Slow infinity speed since install.

Out of interest could people post there distance from cab VS. speed.
I had infinity option 2 installed about 3 weeks ago now. When the original open reach engineer installed the service he said that there was something not right with it, I was getting download speeds of 8 mb. He conducted internal house wiring and also tested the drop wire to the dp, same speed.
Long story short another openreach engineer has come out today and informed me that 8mb is the correct speed and that i wouldn't achieve any more. He didnt test the speed at the pole so I have asked them to do this to see what comes back but I would be interested to know what other people are getting at around 900-1000m from the cab.
i was orginally quoted 16.1mb i find it had to believe that half is correct...

We're about 800m from the cabinet (I'd originally thought we were nearer to around 300-400m but google maps proved me wrong!)
I've just upgraded to Infinity 2 today and our download speeds have increased from around 37.5 Mbps to 42.5 Mbps.
I guess it all depends on the route the cable takes and the quality of the copper (our house is about 11 years old and so I'm guessing the BT lines are about the same age), but I would have thought you could achieve more than 8Mbps if we're getting over 40Mbps being only slightly closer to the cabinet than you.

  • Slow Infinity Speed - Could this make the Guiness ...

I transferred from Virgin fibre to Infinity a couple of months ago - and performance has been acceptable considering the fact that I'm 5km from the exchange - 15 Mbps download 1.2 upload. However a  few days ago it dropped  to 7 Mbps and .15 (yes 0.15) A fault on the line was diagnosed - engineer worked  hard to fix it - told me the line is good however I was getting 7Mbps  and .15  - he said it may take some time to get back up to speed - when he left - 24 hours after the engineer's visit I am seeing no improvement. My mobile phone has a better upload speed
What is the best course of action ( apart from returning to Virgin!) Is the line likely to improve - do I go back to BT and report it again - I could cut my wrists but that would spoil the carpet
I've reset the modem and hub but there seems to be so much conflicting advice I'm not sure what to do. Advice would be gratefully accepted

If I were you I would uninstall BT Desktop Help. It might not help your speed but it will help your computer. It is a pile of software junk that is not needed on your computer to connect to the Internet or for anything else and it can cause problems on some computers.
Use this as your speed checker and then run the diagnostics and post back the results along with your IP profile and somebody may be able to help.

  • Slow infinity, slower infinity2.

What is the best way to test your speed?
I was getting 32 at speedtest.net and 7.5 at testmy.net which a lot of people say is the best site to use. That was when I first had the service installed. A month later it was down to 24 and 6.
At 17 and 5 was when an engineer came out to replace the openreach box, which made no difference. For the last two months I've had several tests of 28 and 3.2 from speed test and testmy respectively.
I've had an email from BT telling me I've been upgraded to infinity2 and can expect speeds of around 70. Cool. Now I'm getting 23 and 2.8. testmy.net says that this is around two thirds of my hosts average and lower than the UK average which isn't quite what I'm paying so much for, I don't think.
I've never been able to watch anything on iplayer in HD without buffering 'breaks' andI'm also getting more than a little tired of being asked to restart my equipment.
It's very frustrating to put it mildly.

I find the best speed test to be http://mcslhr.visualware.com/myspeed/myspeed_line_capspeed.html.  I see that http://testmy.net/download uses servers in the USA, which are likely to give slower results than UK or European ones.  (To compare, you can ask speedtest.net to use servers in futher away places, it uses a local one by default).
It is also worth running the 'ADSL and Fibre Diagnostic' test at http://speedtester.bt.com/, and reporting here the ip profile that it gives.  (The speedtest results from that are pretty useless, especially the upload, it is the profile that is useful.)
Even on those speeds you should be able to view iPlayer.  Also worth running http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics to see what it says about streaming.
