Solaris 2.6 Revision 11/99
Hi,
Could anyone advise on a supplier for Solaris 2.6 Revision 11/99 (Sparc). This revision is now an end of life product , but we have an urgent requirement for it.
Thanks in advance
Nigel Gladstone.
Hi
The setup looks OK and you've tried to ping the default gateway of 134.99.12.1 and it just hangs?
Has this problem just occurred and there have been no material changes to the workstation ( ie it hasn't been moved, repatched, or had a change of IP etc )?
This looks as though there might be a hardware problem with your network card or it could be a problem with the switch/hub your host is plugged into.
If possible boot to the OK> prompt on your workstation and at the boot prompt type:
watch-net-all
This should check your interfaces and show them sniffing packets.
If this appears to be functioning correctly, I'd start looking at the hub/switch your plugged into. One scenario that comes to mind was that I had a similar problem to yours and spent the best part of 2 days fiddling with the server. It turned out that the switch we were connected to had been changed to implement a security feature whereby the switch will only accept packets on a particular port from a specific MAC address ( presumably this stops people plugging in there laptops or other machines into switches ).

6i on Solaris - minimum patch revision
Does anyone know where I can find the Forms Server 6i installation guide? It doesn't appear to be on technet.
I need to know the minimum patch revision levels for running 6i on Solaris 2.6/5.6
Also, has anyone ever run into this error:
kgepop: no error frame to pop to for error 0
thanks!Application server (OAS 9i or earlier) can be istalled only on server (WEB Server machine).
For Forms/Reports you can install them on every workstation. But some enterprises prefer to install them on the server and somehow to give access to Forms/Reports Developer to every user.
looking in my archive I found the following for you (I copied it from one answer):
Platform Oracle8i/NT4.0 - Clients MS Windows (95, 98, NT)
We configure our clients so that Developer 2.1 (Forms, Reports, graphs) runtime code can be run
from
the network, rather having to install on each client PC. We paste the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE
key into the Windows registry of each client. The key contains the location of the Oracles files on
the file Server. This makes it very quick & simple to set up clients.
The problem is now we have the need for ODBC to be set up on the clients as well, for MS Access
connections
to the Database. I've pasted the registry key for the ODBC DSN onto the ODBC key but obviously more
is required. Has anyone got this done before?
No, I haven't done that for ODBC but it may be possible.
I agree with you that this network approach makes it easy to set up Oracle client machines.
Depending
on the speed of your server and your network though, the response time penalty for running Oracle
Forms
from a server can be significant. It is not difficult to install the Oracle client software on one
client, then replicate that to the other clients. The users may like the response times much
better
that way. Also, if you make any changes to Oracle Forms or especially to PLL files, you will not
be
able to deploy them on a server while anyone is using the application, if everyone runs it from the
server. -
"Connections currently in use" negative???
WL 4.5.1 sp7, Solaris 2.6, Oracle 8i
We're have multiple connection pools set up on wl, and are seeing very slow
response on one particular pool. Upon inspection of the WL console, we see
that the connections currently in use is '-5'! Is this a console bug, or is
WL somehow catching more returned connections than checked-out connections?
GeneThis is the case on slow connection pools in WLS 4.5.1. It is fixed in SP13.

DriverManager.getConnection() and provided me with a patch - jtsdriver.jar.
Can someone please provide me with more information on this? Specifically,
if jtsdriver.jar is an official patch? Here is the last email from Joe ...

Hi Mike,
Here is the modified service pack doc which includes the reference to Issue
32204
This fix made it to source but for some reason did not get documented.
So this fix for sure is in service pack 13.
hope this is what you are looking for.
Best Regards,
Michael O'Shea.

Hi Joe,
I could have anticipated the solution ;-).... back in my old job this
problem would not have even manifested, so you can believe how far back
into my head my eyes rolled when I found out we were still running WL

Internet company with long QA cycles! And curse us for producing an old product that was stable enough that the
big profitable company never had to replace it till now maybe? ;-)

It's neither of those, it is probably a counting bug in that server'sversion
of the pool.

However, if you are already on Solaris 10, I'd recommend to upgrade to Sun Studio 12, which is free, has many improvements and works much better with Solaris 10. If you, for any reason, can't upgrade compilers to Studio 12, you can still use Sun Studio 12 IDE plus debugger and compilers from Studio 9. It is easy to install several versions of Sun Studio on a machine, you just need to give different base directories to the installer. -
How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?
Hi All,
I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?
Many thanks,
JackHi JKGN,
Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.
Btw, the last thing I managed to do on this system at the time was added a secondary 1TB internal disk with the intention to restore both / and /export/home data onto this disk while
making use of all the disk device management services such as the following services only available in a fully installed Solaris system (both single & multi-user modes) installed on the
primary disk:
# svcs smserver

one from Solaris installation disk with restrictive (_cannot create folder for mount point or running disk management utilities_) capability such as those services just covered, compared to one from a completed Solaris installation system with full access to all filesystems and utilities / commands in general.
I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
Thanks in advance,

Metainit/striping problem on Solaris 9
We are trying to deploy the Apple XServe RAIDS to customers running Solaris 9. The issue is that Solaris 9 will not recognize a device/LUN that is > 2TB. (No problem with Solaris 10) In trying to solve this problem, we sliced a 7 disk (4.09 TB) RAID into 3 slices. This presents three 1.36TB disks to the Solaris system. Basically, we have 6 disks being presented across both controllers to Solaris. They are direct connected from the XServe to a dual port QLogic HBA. The problem comes in when you try to create a stripe/concatenation across the logical devices being presented. (The disks are being presented on C4 and C5)
Results from a format AFTER I split both 7 disk RAID5s into 3 slices.

Trying to initialize a 6 device stripe via Solaris Volume Manager (AKA disksuite)
metainit -f d77 6 1 c4t600039300001F461d0s0 1 c4t600039300001F461d1s0 1 c4t600039300001F461d2s0 1 c5t600039300001F2ECd0s0 1 c5t600039300001F2ECd1s0 1 c5t600039300001F2ECd2s0
I receive the following error:
metainit: hostname: c4t600039300001F461d1s0: overlaps with device in d77
I tried to do a work around where I create three striped devices then concatenate them:
Creating the first 2 device stripe across controllers c4 and c5 (1 device each)
metainit -f d77 2 1 c4t600039300001F461d0s0 1 c5t600039300001F2ECd0s0
I was able to create the first metadevice d77 using one logical LUN from each controller.
When I tried to create a second metadevice across the controllers: (Using d1 from each controller)
metainit -f d78 2 1 c4t600039300001F461d1s0 1 c5t600039300001F2ECd1s0
metainit: hostneme: c4t600039300001F461d1s0: overlaps with device in d77
I received the same error.
In doing some reaearch, it seems the problem is due to a problem with the disk duplication process, disk device IDs stored on the disks are not unique. I was curious if this is the problem that Apple presents the split disks with the SAME diskid? Has anybody else successfully created stripes (due to a LUN size limit) across the disk successfully on a Solaris system?I contacted Sun and here is an explination from them. I also noticed when I queried the Xserver RAIDS, there were no serial numbers.
Solaris 9 can support a 16Tb filesystem, but there is a scsi limitation on the device of 2Tb. So you are stuck with striping together several smaller devices if you want a single filesystem above 2Tb.
The problem you are having when metainit reports an overlap comes from the way Solaris Volume Manager identifies devices. The portion of the scsi inquiry that is returned is always unique when Sun firmware is involved, but in your case is not unique.
You may be able to make use of the appended infodoc to avoid this problem. I see no evidence of our having tested this with your particular scenario, but it has been successful in similar cases.
You might also inquire of whoever supports your storage device whether a mode is supported whereby the device's inquiry strings can be made unique.
Here is the steps he wanted me to take and the results. I still can not get the Xserve RAIDS to generate a unique device id:
Step 1
Determine the vendor and product strings. You can run these commands:
# netstat -k | grep -i vendor
# netstat -k | grep -i product
netstat -k | grep -i vendor

Patch Pro Installation on Solaris 9
I've been attempting to install Patch Pro 2.0 for a Solaris 9 install. I can't seem to find the needed install file to download. I've followed the instructions that I've found on Sun's document "Signed Patches Administration Guide for PatchPro 2.2". The document says to download for Solaris 9 can be found on SunSolve. The only link that I can find on the SunSolve page has a download for Solaris 8 (http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=40c8c2ad) This download doesn't work because the OS is a different version.
I don't know if this is an oversite of Sun on their web site. If someone knows where to find the needed download for Patch Pro for Solaris 9 it would be greatly appreciated.go to http://www.sun.com/download
look under A to Z section
Product Downloads Sun Patch Manager 2.0
Please note mentioned in the downlaod page: quote from the Web page:
"CAUTION: If you already have Sun Patch manager 2.0 installed on your Solaris 9 system, subsequently installing revisions 28-34 of patch ID 112945 on SPARC[R] systems or revisions 18-25 of patch ID 114193 on x86 systems broke Patch Manager. To correct this problem, you must first run the /usr/lib/patch/pmunsetup script to uninstall Patch Manager. When prompted to uninstall the J2SE[tm] software, answer no. Then, install Patch Manager (at least patch 112945-35 (SPARC) or 114193-26 (x86)). "
or just load the lastest recommended patches and updates (assuming the SUNWppro and SUNWpcfg patch pro config package is uninstalled)
make sure the files exist in /etc/parch or touch patch.conf and secret.conf and then run the smpatch or pprosetup options for your sunsolve contract userid and password is placed in /usr/lib/.sunsolvepw file and is set for perm of 600.
also if you do not go through a web proxy then enter in a pprosetup -x <cr> to null web proxy values out. and check the dmesg for errors. -
Solaris 10 x86 NetVista A40i 6578PBU
I've installed Solaris 10 6 times now, each with a different set of error situations. I'm requesting a new/overwrite install each time. The machine is in the hcl. My major problems:
1) Network connected ... occasionally: iprb0
The network sometimes works, sometimes not. In my first install, I manually configured /etc/ files to make it work. dhcp does not seem to help; manual config seems to skip over or omit key prompts (like domain name).
During some install options, I get messages like:
unable to run /usr/sbin/sysidput
see /var/sadm/system/logs
unable to configure iprb0
If I unplug/replug the network cable, the kernel recognizes these changes, but I can't even ping my own IP address. localhost pings fine.
2) X refuses to start. I don't understand this one. X was configured and working properly during install, then fails on reboot with messages like:
agp gart support not available
How would I resolve that? This is Intel i815 with Compaq TFT5000 (CPQ1341).
3) Screwy colors during install. turquoise on violet?
It made me think my video was not recognized, but eventually reverted to "normal" colors.
4) Do not try to install using a KVM switch.
Tried this ... keyboard and mouse were not picked up correctly, so X refused to start. But the X installer worked fine.
5) X installer. Why don't you auto focus the cursor.
The window starts, without a mouse cursor in the window, so keyboard isn't recognized. This is a single user install program ... just move the focus.
6) "Error has occurred during configuration, backup"
When I do that on the network config screens, Java blows up.
7) The transition from CD to CD is flawed. The pop-up window telling you to change CD's obscures the progress window. There is plenty of screen real estate ... don't cover things up.
8) During one install, the gui wasn't chosen, and the character prompt program did not recognize any of the CD's. It would be helpful to use the same external description of the CD's that the internal programs are requesting. I had to cancel the install, and start again.
9) During one install, the auto-eject of CD's following disc1 somehow got confused, the machine rebooted, and got an error "cannot read fdisk table".
I powered off/on, and the install proceeded correctly.Part of the problem of documenting these failures is the lack of network support. I don't know how to transfer config and log information back to my machine for analysis.
- How do I write this info to a floppy disk?
Here are the relevant files for the X startup failure that I was able to capture when the network was working.

Solaris 10 x86 Update Manager & smpatch errors
I've recently installed Solaris 10 on two x86 machines and, even after installing patch 121119-15, I'm having Update Manager and smpatch issues. It appears to be due to certificate troubles.
I've followed several sets of instructions (including cacaoadm stop/start and registration) and nothing has seemed to work.
I have successfully connected to:
# telnet sun.com 80
# telnet cns-services.sun.com 443
# telnet getupdates1.sun.com 443
# telnet a248.e.akamai.net 443
I have also tried:
# cacaoadm stop
# cacaoadm status
# /usr/lib/cc-ccr/bin/eraseCCRRepository
# rm /var/scn/persistence/SCN*
# cacaoadm start
Reregistering didn't change anything.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

Sun Update Manager problem in Solaris 10/08
Since installing Solaris 10 x86 10/08 on my AMD Sempron system, Sun Update Manager doesn't work. It starts and gives me a "Warning" window with no text and a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation point. That's it. This worked fine on this box in the last Solaris release.
Any ideas?Hi , I'm getting the similar issue. I've around 20 machines in my lab which are SunBlade 1500 and running solaris 10. While running the update manager I'm getting the pop up window with empty string and only exclamation mark. I tried to check the java version also which is 1.5 and also update the files
/usr/sbin/pprosvc
JAVACMD="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5+"
To:
JAVACMD="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5*"
And in /usr/bin/updatemanager, if you use it (around line 37):
Change:
JAVA_EXEC="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5+"
To:
JAVA_EXEC="/usr/jdk/latest/bin/java -version:1.5*"
But still no effect .
After running suc.sh , I get the following message in one of my machine.

HP LTO-3 support in Solaris 10
What is the bare *minimum* Solaris 10 core release and/or patch revision required in order to support HP LTO-3 drives natively (no st.conf modifications)? I was unable to find this info anywhere in a search of SunSolve & the Sun site. However, there's mention of both the IBM & Quantum versions.
So where is the LINUX support in the new Solaris 10?It does not exist (at least not outside of Sun).
There are rumours that it will be available in one of the Solaris
10 update releases. In case S10 FCS will be available in
january/february 2005, and the rumour are true, I'd expect that
the linux support will be available somewhere in june 2005 (??
S10 Update 1) or october 2005 (?? S10 Update 2). (Pure
speculation be me, I don't know the schedule)
I downloaded the free Software Express for Solaris
x86 Platform (11/04) and installed it on a Dell 8600
P4 1.8 system. Fresh install on a new hard drive.
Then I tried to install the new FireFox web browser
r for Linux. Why didn't you download/install the firefox for Solaris x86
release? Or was that intended as a test for "Janus", the
(non existing) linux compatibility layer in Solaris 10? -
We are running Solaris 2.7 and have about 20 programs which use Embedded SQL. A few of these programs are setuid to root. We have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set to $ORACLE_HOME/lib.
This turns out to be a security problem for Solaris. i.e., it will only locate .so files needed for a setuid program if those objects are in /usr/lib.
Short of static linking, can someone tell me if there's a way to get around this problem? Also, if we link statically, is there a way of knowing if the particular revision of Oracle on the runtime machine is compatible with the machine that the machine that the code was linked on?
Please reply by email. I need this info ASAP.
Many TIAThis is must read thread, Am going through it.

The LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable fits into this as the means to find and resolve the shared lib reference for loading of shared libraries. The load library call (whether called statically by the kernel when loading your executable, or called dynamically from within your loaded executable) needs to find the relevant shared lib on disk. And this environment variable determines where to look on disk for the physical library module to load.
Whether LD_LIBRARY_PATH is needed or not depends on how the dynamic link loader of the kernel works ito determing where to look for a shared lib.
The Windows dynamic link loader uses the PATH variable (after checking the current dir first). It seems from the test below that Linux needs the LD_LIBRARY_PATH set

#This is a working production system with 2 146.81GB mirrored hard disks. There is no disk error for either local or external 2TB Western Digital USB disks that works on Windows 7 or XP.
Any idea on what else to look for?

Edited by: 797805 on 6/06/2012 04:48Hi All,
Looks like it was a driver / incompatibility / unsupported issue since 2 other much smaller USB keys (Lexar USB Flash Drive – 32GB, SanDisk Cruzer Colors – 4GB) were successfully mounted automatically by volfs service as follows:
# df -h
Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on

It is necessary to install additional driver that came with the disk on Windows XP platform. However,
Thanks again,

How do I add an undetected Intel 82559 NIC to my Sparc Solaris 9 install?
All,
I bought a combo LSI SCSI and Intel NIC card for my Ultra 5. I'm running Solaris 9 9/04. The card was added after the os was installed. The OS is currently using the hme0 adapter detected on the system but I need to multi-home this system.
first I did a "touch /reconfigure" and a "boot -r" when that failed. Then I checked the net and found the driver ought to be iprb. according to the manpage for iprb, there should be a /kernel/drv/iprb entry but there is none on my system. I tried to `devfsadm -i iprb` anyhow but I got a "failed to attach" although that's the right driver. I suspect that some magic is needed in /etc/devlink.tab
So The card is not detected but prtconf seems to see it as an network device. I'm at a loss on how to proceed to get the nic recognized. The scsi is working just fine. Here is what I know:

Thanks!!All,
I've found the problem. It seems that Solaris 9 does not ship a driver for this. Anyhow, I found a GPL driver at:
http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/
Use the "tu" driver. Although the chip is clearly marked as an Intel 82559 it responds to the tu (DEC Chip 211x) and not the Intel ife driver.
So that others can find this solution, I have added these keywords:
lsi IntraServer ITI-6110U2-X
Ebay combo Ultra2 SCSI NIC
LSI/Sun Dual Ultra2-LVD/SE SCSI Ethernet Combo PCI Card -

What the mean the log ?
How to solve ?
In fact, thank you very much.
JimmyDisk not responding to selection generally indicates a hard drive error.
The fact that their showing up as transport errors indicates it could be scsi bus or or ide chain problems.
Could be cables, termination, controller. Or it could be the drive electronics.
