[solved] usb does not work...
Whenever I plug in a usb-device, it always say:
Cannot mount volume.
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied.
A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to
this recipient, see message bus configuration file(rejected message had
interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)"
destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
No idea of what it is saying....
by the way, hotplugging is already enabled and the usb device works well in Windows.

Make /etc/PolicyKit.conf look like this and try again:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!-- -*- XML -*- -->
<!DOCTYPE pkconfig PUBLIC "-//freedesktop//DTD PolicyKit Configuration 1.0//EN"

Solved rEFInd does not work after update
Hello.
Today, I updated rEFInd with yaourt.
After the update, I copied the new files in /boot/efi.
I rebooted and now rEFInd does not work.
The only message I got is:
rEFInd - Initializing
After 2-3 minutes, the computer reboots and I got the same error message.
To boot, I had to use the UEFI shell.
First of all, is there a log file for rEFInd?
It is not easy at all to debug it when we don't have any error messages.
After that, I did the procedure to install rEFInd in /boot/efi twice without any success.
Do you know what to do to solve my problem?
Thanks for your help.

The capture section seems to be ok.. However when I am using skype,
the people I call only hear a noise and nothing else. I confirmed that with
skype call testing service..
Moreover, the levels of the mixer are ok and nothing is muted.
Finally, the mic itself works fine, I dual boot with XP and I didn't have
any problems with skype there..
Please let me know what other information you need..
Many thanks in advance.

If you are using alsa, then remember to go into alsamixer and turn up your microphone volumes and set a device as the capture device.
Basically, go to the capture pane (F4), navigate to the capture device you want to use, and press Space to toggle it on.
First of all, I'm so sorry for the late reply.. I didn't have access to a pc for a long time.
And actually your suggestion did the job! I don't believe it was something that simple,
I spent hours googling around and trying all sorts of stuff..
Thanks a lot!!! -
[SOLVED] Empathy does not work after gnome upgrade
Hey there,
I have upgraded gnome from 2.26 to 2.28. Almost everything is perfect (in fact apps start faster than before) but empathy does not connect to msn or any other protocol.
Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. did you check the permissions or did you just remove the files? for other people with the problem, you know. -
[SOLVED] Flashplugin Does Not Work With Firefox.
Hi, all.
Happy to have just installed Arch, after not using it for a while. It's looking as good as ever, but I can't get Flash to work.
I installed Gnash and some things work, but not many. Wanting to be able to use a full Flash implementation, I installed the Flashplugin on my 32-bit box.
When I go to the Adobe test page, I don't see any Flash. When I go to YouTube and similar, I just get a black 'box'. When I visit websites with Flash effects, these do not work and I am told I need a plugin.
When I look at Firefox's 'about:plugins' page, Flash is associated with swf files, so that looks ok.
Can anyone help me with this? If I can get it sorted, my main box may well be having an Arch install, today.
Fingers crossed.
Cheers,
Chris.

"Troubleshooting
If you have Abobe Flash installed on an older system and you start playing a video which simply turns black with nothing happeing, it is most likely that your CPU does not support ISSE2. You can simply check out this by looking at your CPU flags with this command:
# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep flags
If sse2 is not mentioned there, then you need to install an older version of Flash (for example 10.3). "
I only have SSE, not ISSE2, so I think that may be why. I have partial success with Gnash, so will stick with that for now. At least it's open source.
Thanks for your help, all.

[SOLVED] Mic does not work on Intel ICH8 (rev 3) sound card
Hi, folks.
I cannot get my sound card to record anything, using a built-in microphone. Audio output works just fine, though. I hope someone can help me, I have been banging my head against the wall for some time over this issue...
My laptop is Toshiba Satellite A200-1J0 (PSAE6E-04R036G3). alsamixer settings are fine, I tried supplementing additional options to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, but no luck, tried some of the combinations (model=<> position_fix=<>).
When recording sound with gnome-sound-recorder, with Capture set as input, nothing is heard. Skype can't record anything, either. I can't even get the crackling or hissing sound like some users do.
Should I try to get the latest ALSA?

Last edited by teMplaryum (2010-01-26 10:15:18)Hi there!
I had the very same problem with the same soundcard and found this thread.
The problem got solved for me by adding the same line as you have to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.
However, I also had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf and add:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba power_save=0
Notice the difference on the "model=toshiba" part.
However, my laptop is not a Toshiba, but a Compal IFL90.
I remember that in Ubuntu I needed(a long time ago) to add a line to /etc/alsa.conf with model=toshiba. I figured it might be worth a try, and well, it did.
I hope this can help someone else.
As for the OP: "You have my thanks!" -
nothing plugged into USB ports is recognized - only things appearing under USB are Bluetooth USB Host Controller and IR Receiver
external drive, camera, and phone are not recognized when plugged in (although phone receives power)
any suggestions?
Thanks!
OS X 10.5.8, 2 GHz, 2 GB RAMEverything is checked except connected servers.
Turns out I had the mistaken impression that anything plugged into USB would show up immediately in the system profiler list, and I see now that it doesn't. Now that I look into it more it seems that the problem may just be in the Lacie USB hard drive I'm trying to connect.
Having said all that, an ipod which is plugged in does connect to itunes, but doesn't show up on the desktop, even though that option is checked.
Thanks again. -
MSI E350IA-E45 Wake On USB does not work
I spent hours trying to get the computer to be able to wake from my usb devices. I enabled it in the bios and in the Windows 7 device manager. However, it doesn't work. The motherboard cuts off power to the USB when in S3 sleep mode. Has anybody been able to get Wake From USB working on this board or is it false advertisement?
Mine works with a USB mouse but not Bluetooth mouse.... My BT also has issues on cold start, until I jumped the 5volt pin to the 5v stand by on the power supply

[SOLVED] Compass does not work after update.
For those of you not familiar, Compass is a Ruby gem that works with SASS , another Ruby gem. SASS is a CSS preprocessor. Anyway, I had Compass working fine, now I've completely broken it. I didn't see anything on the announcements that I thought would affect me, nor did I see anything on the forums.
When I try to run the command 'compass watch' which makes compass poll for changes, I get this:
/usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.1.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:in `require': cannot load such file -- sass/script/node (LoadError)

From what I can tell, I have some sort of file path wrong. I added this to my ~/.bashrc file just like the wiki said:
PATH="$(ruby -e 'puts Gem.user_dir')/bin:$PATH"
Again, everything was fine but now it's not.
Last edited by joetemp (2014-02-05 22:33:07)Oh no I know Compass isn't an official package. But Ruby is and I was using RubyGems as the 'package manager' to install Compass.
I'm not at all trying to be a smartass but the reason I feel it belongs in the Pacman section is because everything I did... I did according to the wiki. Not a single AUR package is involved in this problem.

[SOLVED] NetworkManager does not work properly
I have invoked systemd-networkd. But when I start NetworkManager, the ip address is lost and the connections (both wired and wireless) displayed on NetworkManager try to connect for a while then automatically closed. It seems there are some conflicts. I want to use NetworkManager because within Gnome Desktop environment, it is convenient to manager network connections. Have anyone ever encountered this problem?

@cris9288, I have them both working at the moment
@archzhengwei,I my case, 'systemd-networkd' is only started for systemd-timesync and not configured, maybe that helps you.
Interesting. Usually multiple network services will prevent each other from working, but it sounds like systemd-networkd serves other purposes. Good to know! -

Two weeks ago I bought a HP Stream 11" with no CD/DVD drive; when connecting an external CD/DVD drive via USB does not work and appear a window that says a file is missing; I am kindly asking for your help regarding what has to be done in order to make it work. Please note that the External DVD/CD drive worrks perfect on others Laptops I own
THank youHI @agalford03 ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a great place to find answers and tips!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that you have purchased the HP Stream 11 which does not come with an internal CD/DVD and when you connected an external one, you received a message that it was missing a file.
Have you done all your Windows updates?
Have you done a manual check for Windows updates?
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant to check for HP updates?
What file does it say you are missing?
When it is connected, if you check Device Manager does it supply any additional information?
Have you ran the Windows troubleshooter?
Good Luck!

Please forgive me if I posted this in the wrong section! First thread!
Recently, three out of four of my USB ports decided to stop working. The one USB port that works is a USB 2.0 port that is located between the microphone jack and the DVD drive. There is also a eSATA / USB combo port. The eSATA portion works fine, but the USB does not work. At first I suspected that the USB controller was probably starting to fail. I don't understand why all but one USB port functions properly.
I have tried reinstalling the chipset drivers, updated my BIOS, and I tried to see if the ports are recongized in Linux. None of those work. I also checked the ports to make sure there are no bent pins. My warranty period just ended so I was wondering what I can do now. I don't mind opening up the computer, as long as I know what to look for.
Thanks in advance!hi idaggerpwn,
The USB board must be bad. Try to re-seat the cable from the USB board to the motherboard and check. If this doesn't work, check if the USB ports are somehow disconnected to the PCB. If they are, you will need to hire an a technician with board level soldering skills to reconnect them or you can contact lenovo for service to replace this part. (fees may apply)
Check page 78 (see #10) of the hardware maintenance manual (HMM) for the USB board location. To access the USB board see page 53 of the HMM.
Best regards,
neokenchi
