[SOLVED] Wireless signal weaker than for Windows

Using the same laptop at the same location results in Windows being able to connect to my wireless network with "very good" signal strength, and Linux either not connecting at all or having a very weak connection.
Overall, Windows has a significantly stronger connection where as with Linux, I need to be within 10 feet of the router for it to consistently connect. I'm using NetworkManager with the GNOME frontend and have IPv6 set to ignore. My wireless card is the Broadcom BCM4313.
I am completely clueless as to what the cause is and any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wiki recommends not using the wl driver, but since I have no other leads at the moment, I'll give it a try.
Update: Switching to broadcom-wl was the solution. Thanks, elliott.

Ok, I (Lenovo) did it again.
System Update showed me this update: "Vodafone and AT&T Wireless WAN (HSPA) Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)".
As I'm using Vodafone and I had a AT&T driver, I decided to update.
The result is, that now the GPS doesn't work.
Yes, I'm in a place where the GPS signal is present (my house, with the previous driver I was able to get 6/7 satellites).
What happens? Lenovo TV GPS stays there trying to fix the satellites, but nothing happens. I can't recover the system to a previous state, as I updated Flash player too, and Windows only show me the possibility to roll back this update.
So, apart advicing everyone not to update, I kindky ask:
- where can I found the previous driver? I searched the web without success...
- why does Lenovo deploy driver which can cause problems (I just had one updating the BT driver last week! .msi installer problem, error 1935...)?

Ok, I found in the Net the drive 7uw706ww.zip, which is Version 6.1.4.2, while the updated version is 6.1.10.5 (7UW708WW).
I tried again the GPS, and it wasn't working.
Anyway, before downgrading, I tried to reinstall the new driver, downloading and installing the .exe instead going through System Update.
Result: now GPS is working (same place, same conditions, just 5 minutes later)!
Don't know where the difference is...

Using WRE to send a wireless signal rather than expand a signal

Hi all, I'm hoping you might be able to help me out on this. I have a Linksys router and a WRE. The router does not have wireless, but i was curious if it's possible to trunk the router to the WRE, and have it send out a wireless signal, rather than pick up on and expand an existing signal. If so, what would i have to do to achieve this.

If the router does not have Wireless then you cannot use your Range Expander...In other word's, what you want to establish is not possible with the Range Expander...
However, this is possible with a Wireless Access Point(WAP54G)...You can connect an Access Point(WAP54G) to your router to send a Wireless Signal...

Airport Extreme Signal Weaker than Before

My Airport Extreme signal is weaker than it used to be. Nothing has changed except I can no longer connect to the internet without running diagnostics each time I try to use it. It will connect and then stay connected until my macbook goes to sleep. When it wakes up, I have to re-connect using diagnostics.
I am using it in the same room I always have and never had problems before. But for the past several weeks, it is just not behaving as it always has. I have checked for a firmware update, but airport utility doesn't indicate that one is available. It's running: Version 6.3.2.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's run great for the past several years. This is a new issue...

I am using it in the same room I always have and never had problems before. It will connect without problems in other rooms that are closer to the base station. But from the room where I ordinarily connect, it won't automatically connect anymore.
I can get it to connect from that room, and it will stay connected, but I can only do so by running diagnostics, telling it to assist me and then selecting the network and and following the steps to connect.

U330 wireless and bluetooth drivers for windows xp. devices not working. drivers already installed

so i did a fresh instal of windows xp pro sp3.
device manager shows yellow question mark and ! for Network Controller and BCM2046 Bluetooth Device. i have tried using lan to windows update, update drivers, but device manager cannot find anything.
i have installed the 2 broadcom drivers for windows xp listed on lenovos website. i made sure that wireless switch is on, and fn+f5 wireless option is set to on as well.
LAN shows up. and so does the 1394 on the network connections, but no wireless.
(note: on my server 2008 os, the new windows troubleshooting instructed me to turn on a specific service, which then enabled my wireless to work.)
however i cant seem to find a way to get the wireless to work.
Could someone tell me all services exactly need to be enabled for the wireless to work? and why does the network controller still show up on device manager even after i have installed the drivers?
please help, totally lost.

Your "yellow" device is Bluetooth, not WiFi.
Fn+F5 utility work depends on both of them, so you need all drivers to be installed before it will work.
Install bluetooth drivers for your model. Also, your WiFI also may be Broadcom (Gemtek) and you may be trying to install Intel WiFi.

C4580 won't run wirelessly on driver downloaded for Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Got a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. c4580 not compatible with Windows 7. Working with HP Instant Care, downloaded Windows driver for c4500 series all-in-one printers. Printer now works using USB cable but does not work wirelessly. Techs from HP were to call me back within 48hrs (from 2/11). No callback. Still have open service ticket 8034746768 but have spent so many hrs on my cellphone with HP I have run way over my allowed minutes per month, about $80. worth. Hesitate for that reason to call them again. Can anyone help?

Wireless Signal Weak - Tap into Outside Box Coax Cable and Convert to RJ45 Somehow?

Garage PC is too far away from Verizon Wireless Router MI424WR.
The cable from the underground comes in at the garage and is tantalizingly close!
Can a 75 ohm video type splitter be installed at the garage and some sort of converter box be installed at that point to convert the signal and provide a hardwire connection to the network card in the garage PC?
If possible, does Verizon have this converter for a reasonable cost or can you recommend an alternative?
Can an extra STB from Verizon be installed and use the "ETHERNET" RJ45 connector on the rear panel?

The underground cable is fiber. You can't tap into that.

Yes. You can tap into the coax coming out of the ONT and use a MOCA bridge to provide an ethernet connection in the garage.

No. The RJ45 connection on the STB is not active.

Why does Firefox4 for Mac feel less finished than for Windows or even Linux?

On Windows, tabs compress up into the title bar and you can utilize much more screen space for web pages. I wish this had made it into the Mac version. In addition, for mac, it just feels sluggish, laggy, and the browser itself hangs often. My experience with the other platform versions on the same computer is much better. It just feels like the mac version is still beta6.

The Firefox button is only available on Windows and Linux and shows when the Menu bar is hidden.
On Mac the menu bar is maintained by the Mac OS and not by Firefox and the Menu bar is always visible and can't be hidden, so there is no need for such a menu button.

SOLVED--"object no longer exists" for Windows shares

If you can see a Windows share in the Finder but can't connect to it, or get the error that says the object doesn't exist, I think I've found the answer. I was trying to mount a connected Western Digital USB drive which was shared from a Windows XP machine. It was seen correctly in Finder, but I could never actually connect to it. It wasn't until recently that I discovered that I was also having a problem connecting to it from another Windows machine, and that led me to find this solution.

If you still have the error after rebooting your Windows machine where the share resides, increase the value of 15, then reboot. I had to go to 25 to make everything work.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

I have purchased a W540 with the 'Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 (2x2, 802.11ac/a/b/g/n) with Bluetooth® 4.0' option.
As per usual I am doing a fresh install of Windows 7 but I can't figure out how to get bluetooth working?
I've installed the 'Intel Wireless Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter Software for Windows 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad' (filename giww08ww.exe) however I'm not sure what to do next. I see no bluetooth in device manager or control panel, or icon in the taskbar.
Additionally the device manager shows no misconfigured (!) devices.
What is supposed to happen or where am I supposed to go from here?

Installation of hotkeys let you enable Bluetooth through the soft switch. So I doubt hotkey features is something which cannot be avoided.

*BOOT CAMP* Windows XP not picking up wireless signal on Lion

I just got a new iMac two days ago and was able to install Windows XP from my old Dell Latitude boot disk. Yes, I thought it was odd... But it worked. I do understand that Lion only provides Windows 7 drivers in Boot Camp Assistant, but I was able to install Boot Camp 3.0 and 3.1 drivers for XP, right from the Apple Support Boot Camp driver link.
Well... My main issue lies here... When I switch to the XP side, it wont pick up a wireless signal. That's all I need so that I can start updating Windows from the internet, but it is not picking anything up.
I'm assuming that I am just missing the driver, but like I said, I installed the drivers provided by Apple. This is very frustrating and am not sure what to do.
Can someone PLEASE point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

This appears to be a problem with some of the newest MacBooks. There are several posts on this issue. It is possible that, as you seem to have noticed, switching to an NTFS formatted partition will solve the problem. See e.g. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5947955&#5947955

Sorry!! The things you don't know are that Windows 8.1 does not under ANY circumstances acceps USB video streaming. Not from my camera and not from Dazzle or ANY other device or cable. That is written into STONE by Microsoft. Can't do nothing about it. That's a barrier that cannot be broken or worked around. The other thiing you don't know is that I do not have RCA outlets on my camera. I bought it assuming it must have as most devices until then did and got it home in 2001 or whenever and found to my great dismay that it ONLY has a USB output. Not multicolored RCA jacks of any kind. That is also a barrier that I cannot break unless I buy a used camera that takes my tapes and DOES have RCA outputs. My bad. I should have returned it immediately at the time, unfortunately I was too ill at the time to do so. I know you were only trying to help. I'm sorry if I was snippy with you. You were extremely kind to try to help. And I appreciate you. Hopefully other people will see your answers and they will help them. I have a Droid Ultra phone. The signal reduction seems to only be in the general area of my home. If I go downtown, the signal improves to what it once was at home. Everything at my home is as it was when the signal was good, including cable TV service. There has been no new construction in the area that I know of.
Thanks for trying to resolve the issue. Just this morning while trying to view web pages, I found that I could not load any.

Weak Wireless Signal After Power Outage - Anyone else??

We had a storm Sunday 7/25 and lost power, now my Verizon Fios router's wireless signal is extremely weak and I can't connect to it unless I'm in the same room with the router. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've had no luck with troubleshooting tools and calling Verizon (why are they so confused and lost all the time). The wireless adapter works fine, but the signal is so weak it can't be connected to. HELP!!

I had EXACTLY the same problem, and I am in Maryland (same storm, I bet). I just cured the slowness. Here's how.
The instructions on the Verizon website for rebooting your router do not include "Unscrew the coaxial cable." You have to do that, as well as turn off the power. The Verizon guy I talked to tonight said you get a "better reset." I kept my router powered off and unscrewed for a while--a good couple of minutes at the minimum. Then, when I screwed the coaxial cable back in and powered back up, I had full-strength connectivity.
