Space Designer resets Wet + Dry mix amounts when sample dragged

Hi,
There is a fairly annoying bug with space designer. Try this:
1. Insert space designer on a track.
2. Turn down the DRY mix to zero, and the WET mix to full.
3. Open the Logic browser, and find a wav file to drag into space designer.
4. Drag the wav file in.
You'll see that the dry mix and wet mix reset themselves. This happens each time you drag in a file.
Am I missing something?

    Space Designer Save Setting Problems
On the right side of the space designer you have "dry" and "rev" settings.
On reopening the plug-in the dry setting switches back to zero, although I saved it at a different setting...
    Everytime, every project...

Does it do this on audio/software instrument channels and aux channels?
In general, when you load SD on an aux channel, Logic assumes it's going to be an FX return and so "helps you out" by setting the dry level to zero for you...
On other channel types it should work as expected...

  • Bug with Space Designer EQ and Filter Envelope?

In Logic Pro X I've noticed the window below the IR waveform only shows the volume envelope information.  The EQ window does not appear making it impossible to use EQ.  Anyone else notice this?

Jup, I checked it out and indeed doesn't happen when you startup a project and open the Space Designer for the first time. When you close Space Designer and open it again, the bug apears. And in various ways too. Sometimes the EQ window stays fixed, eventhough I click Filter Env. Sometimes the Filter Env stays fixed, eventhough I click reverse or EQ etc.
I actually just called apple support on this. The guy from the servicedesk was actually very helpfull. He's checking if the problem still exists in 10.0.4 (which will be released soon I think?). He's going to call me back in a few minutes. I think he was able to reproduce it too, so we are definately not alone on this
Hopefully it's fixed in 10.0.4 or maybe he can at least report this bug directly to the Logic developers. I'll keep you posted!

  • Space Designer 'hangs' Logic * when choosing preset

    Hello All,
    This is my first post!!
I've just purchased a new Intel Mac 8 core with 8 gig of ram - great machine and can seem to handle many plugs. I seem to have a problem - when changing a preset in Space Designer it hangs Logic, I force quit and have to reboot the programme. Has anyone had this problem? I'm using a Metric Halo 2882 dsp. It could be a setting in Audio preferences, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated,
    Phil T

    Thanks for the reply -
My impulses are stored on my local drive 'macintosh hd' - but i don't think this is the problem because when I start a new project, Space Designer works normally. I read somewhere that it could be conflicting with my Airport card - I'm yet to try it out, but will give it a shot in the morning.
    Cheers,

A quick update: logic crashes in more cases now. Last time I was working on volume automation in the arrange window.

  • Wet / dry automation in EQ?

Hey guys. This is going to sound like a silly question but I'm stumped. Let's say I create an EQ that sounds all low-fidelity.... boosted mids, cut highs and lows... and let's say I want to start a sound sounding all crappy with my custom filter, and then I want to slowly turn it off revealing the regular audio... how can I do this? When I go to the automation settings for my EQ, I see a million options for scooping highs and lows and such, but isn't there a way to just simply control wet / dry? Like go from 100% wet to 100% dry, thus saving a ton of individual automation tweaks? Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

If you send to a bus, you are creating two signals - so yeah, it will be louder.  The key to doing it this way would be to make the send pre-fader, and then bring the fader up while bringing the send down... crossfading them, if you will.
You could also find a Space Designer preset that sounds lofi-ish, there are plenty if you explore the warped category.  Again, you would have to crossfade the wet/dry.
Or, you could set up a MatchEQ.  You can drag in your own curve into the graphic area - some experimention will be required to get your curves right.  Watch the little help tags.  Start by clicking and dragging, do not let go of the button, hold shift to change the Q, let go of shift to move freq/gain.  Once you let go of the mouse button that curve is what it is - you can only add new curves.  You can always reset the curve.
Now when you have your lofi sound how you want it, you can automate the "apply amount" from 100% (or however much) to zero.
Edit to add: you could set up your lofi EQ how you like it, and bounce several seconds of that, then drag that file into the match eq.

  • Having some Space Designer panning issues.

Hey all. I'm new to this board. I come with a bit of a problem. Hopefully, someone here can shed some light.
In learning how to use Logic, I was told to maximize my CPU resources by setting up as few instances of Space Designer (among other things) as possible. I was instructed to link two Aux Channel Strips, insert Space Designer (SD) and assign a Stereo Bus as input, and then Send whichever instruments to that Stereo Bus. I've up a few of these, using a different preset in each, depending on my need.
The problem is, when I send a mono instrument that is panned hard to one side, I get beautiful sounding reverberations, but the instrument heads more and more toward the center the more I Send to SD. Obviously, a little SD goes a long way, but there are instances where I would really like to control exactly how much gets panned left or right. I don't want all of my sound ending up in a murky, muddy soup in the center. Ideally I'd love for shared SD resource as I've described to be totally linked to the panning of the instrument. If panned hard left, then no SD at all on the right, and visa versa, and every step in between, all controlled by the panning

Your conception about the system verbs routing is wrong.
Let's have a look at the real world and haw the things are in the native acoustical surround. Imagine you are a listener sitting in the center of a big concert hall and the singer is singing from the left side of the stage. What you hear?
    1. You will hear/feel that the singing is coming from the left side - this is the DRY path of the sound source. It is the faster one and it is direct, that's why the human ear determines where the signal is coming from.
    2. There will be lots of WET signal reflections which go to different sides re-reflect ( depends on the hall architecture ) and as a whole they all will spread to the listener with a slight amount of latency.
In the DAW you can use different methods to manipulate the reverbs but it will be more effective if you use them as inserts and control the spread and pan using a Dir.Mixer plugin after reverb insert for example. You can set even to mono just to get some deepness and prevent any mud in the soundscape.
Finally you can add a bit little send of a system verb which give the listener a picture of some room ambience. You can also try to set the send to "Post-Pan"
though its main purpose is for headphone/stage monitoring most and special plugins side chain like Waves C1s/ch for example. Using with system verbs may cause anomaly. Note, some hardware mixers have one Mono Send/Out and two Returns/Stereo for example.

  • Impulse Response editing - Do it the right way: IRs for Space Designer

    Dear fellow board members,
after doing several research on this topic and many attempts to match some Impulse Responses I finally have to admit, that a little help or insight would be much appreciated. Most of the (Beamsonic) IRs, especially the Studer and Ampeg IRs, seem to have overlength (≈ 6 sec.) and some do have "silence" at the very beginning (see picture below).
I would be thankful for a helping hand explaining me, which part of this IR is of relevant importance: Do I need the "silence" tail at the end? What should I take care of when editing such IRs as the pictured one? Would only the marked yellow area be of importance? Get rid of the red areas (beginning & end)?
As many of the IRs I do have correspond to the image above, I have to go through heavy manual editing and before doing so, your help would be much appreciated.
Does anybody have gone through this before and would like to exchange some of his material for the Space Designer (IRs + corresponding Presets)? I am looking for: EMT 250, Studer A80 Tape, other Tape Sats as well, Ampeg, Westlake Studio D, other useful top quality IRs as well.
For now, many thanks in advance for sharing interest
    Vic.

    1. You maybe want to comment on what is considered to be the
"technical right way" to achieve DAW Tape Saturation via IRs, i.e.
what makes sense and what not?
Really, there is no technical right way - all we are doing is altering our recorded audio in a way that we like - it will vary depending on your tools, your tastes, the material, the artistic intent etc...
a - Insert the Convolution Reverb right on the Audio Channel
    itself with Pre/Post-Compression/EQing, etc.
I will do this if I want to process an individual channel for colour. Remember to set the effect to 100% wet.
b - Send audio to a Convolution Reverb Bus (and share w/multiple
audio channels), loss of quality, etc?
You're just sending a bunch of channels - in convolution terms, the results as far as I know will be the same if you process 10 channels indivdually and sum them, compared to if you sum the 10 channels then convolute them. Remember, convolution is a static process in most tools, including Space Designer.
How would you judge the value of using "Impulse Responses"
    in comparison to "Plug-Ins"?
Well, I don't think anyone's done a tape saturation plugin properly yet. I'm not an expert in this field, but had some interesting discussions with one of the Sonalksis developers over on KVR who is heavily researching into tape saturation (he's doing a doctorate in the subject) and he thinks that it is possible to do a decent tape saturation plugin - not easy by a long stretch, but possible, so I'm sure we will eventually see decent plugs appearing.
Having said that, I'm not actually a huge fan of the tape sound anyway - I like the impulses for that colour if I need it, but I certainly don't run everything through it. I don't really like the smeared transients, at least on my "less natural" pieces. Rock music (as an example) may well work better.
The plugins that do saturation in varying amounts are a mixed bag in my opinion. A lot of people love VintageWarmer, but I'm not that keen on it (again, I'm not an "expert" by a long stretch, these are just my personal opinions).
I've had some great results using Guitar Amp Pro for saturation and warming (we're talking subtle stuff here) on drums and guitars.
There are a bunch of other plugs too, but none that I have used to tape saturation. DUY's tape does saturation, but not really accurate tape simulation *from what I have heard* - I haven't used it personally myself. Charles Dye seems to like it, anyway!
. Finally: Did anybody experiance differences in quality when
comparing Convolution Reverbs (i.e. SD vs Altiverb vs Waves) in
    processing the same IR?
In general, no. Mathmatical convolution is afaiu a mathmatically "perfect" process, much like the adding of audio signals in the digital realm. As long as you know how to do the maths correctly, there should be no difference, given the same IR (it's the IR that really determines the quality of the output).
Of course, different plugs implement things differently, and have different features, but by and large, the convolution engines these things use should be generally the same.
Again, I'm no expert and haven't done exhaustive testing or anything - this info comes from discussions I have and my understanding of these processes from a DSP point of view. Other may well be able to back up or debunk what I've said, so I'll leave the floor to them now...

  • Creating impuse resposes for space designer

Can someone shed some light on this? Theres not a great deal about this subject in the manual. Has anyone actually created their own impulse responses?

I have done, with a good level of success, a good way to figure it out is to do it with another software reverb. Say the terrible Platinumverb, play a tone sweep through it, bounce it, and bounce the dry tone sweep, then open space designer. Press the De-Convolution button, and it'll ask for the coded file, which is the wet tone sweep, then the dry tone sweep, and it'll do the rest.
You can then A/B test it and see that it sounds the same, pretty amazing really. Something you can't really do when it comes to real rooms.

  • Why are L&R outputs uneven w/ Space Designer?

    Hi,
In tweaking my studio setup, I took this approach to balancing my monitors:
I loaded the TestOsc plugin - which gave a balanced L & R output within Logic as expected; I then adjusted the amps of each monitor speaker so as to properly balance them.
Then: I un-bypassed Space Designer on the Master output (with the TestOsc running) and discovered that it (Space Des..) is strongly affecting the stereo balance - as observable at the Master Out VU meters (& speaker output). The phenomenon is different with various individual SD presets...
    Why is this happening?
I'm concerned about creating my mix in a large orchestral template without an understanding & control of this phenomenon....
    Thanks, Wm

    Why is this happening?
Because Space Designer uses stereo *impulse response* files, through which the audio is processed into reverb. If you do not dial in any Dry signal (did you?) you will hear only the fully processed signal. This can vary enormously, as it is shaped by the impulse response file, which is effectively an audio file. It determines what happens to processed signal. Now if you only hear the processed signal, the differences between presets can be as big as the differences between any two audio files.
So... you may have to adjust the Dry-Wet dials on the right of the SpaceDesigner interface. to balance the reverb and the original signal.
Socalled Send presets have no dry signal dialed in, because sent signals should be fully processed and not 'double up' the original signal.
O, and on the left of the SD-interface is a slider to alter the stereo image, which can also be set to mono.
I'm concerned about creating my mix in a large orchestral template without an understanding & control of this phenomenon....
O, I also think that a test oscillator is not the best "guinea-rig" to try out a convolution reverb - unless you're seriously engineeringly measuring stuff, just try 'm with their intended instrument...

  • I am having trouble using reverb of any kind; it does not sound natural, but rather "pixilated." Does anyone have any ideas for a solution? I have used Silververb and Space Designer and am having the same problem...

I am using Logic Pro 9 with two MXL 990 microphones in my piano and a Rode NT1A for vocals. I have tried recording with added reverb and keeping getting not a natural reverb sound, but a rather "pixilated" one that does not sound natural. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue? I have tried using Silververb and Space Designer, and both result in the same problems. Thank you!

This is asking for the impossible! It does not sound natural because maybe it isn't and in judging so whats your reference anyway. If you are in dire need of some natural sounding room you can go and record it yourself. But even then, the chances that it sounds like you imagined it, are very slim.
There are very decent sounding reverberation plugins, based on artificial reverb generators or convolution-style, the last one is said to sound more 'natural' then the first one. Be it as it maybe, it really is like cooking food. You got all the ingredients for this delicious taste at hand and believe it or not to reach a satisfying result this is not enough, because if you do not mix the ingredients in the right proportion you will end up with a different dish you thought you'll get. This is exactly the same when one would mix audio, I dare say.
So treat yourself to some good ingredients and the rest is up to you, namely: taste and experience!
And looking at some of my past music productions I always find the same plugins for the 'ambient' task:
Altiverb by Audio Ease when I have acoustic ensembles (classical music mostly), the Sony Oxford Reverb in studio productions, Bricasti when I have to deal with drums and MMultiBandReverb from MeldaProduction for all-round stuff. Thats the base I start from, after that I can end up with dozen Reverb plugins which basically all are doing the same thing but just in a tiny different way.

  • Space designer and Reverb with EWQL Goliath samples

I'm currently using Logic 9 for sequencing.
Alot of the samples I use in recording are from EW-QL Goliath as a plugin for Logic.
Given the 'Play' engine has a reverb facility and other kinds of articulations and effects you can apply is there much use to using Space designer in Logic? I'm not sure if Play Engines is vastly superior or not.
Would it be better to simply set up the reverb within the Play engine and then record to in Logic OR record an unaltered sample (e.g. violin) from Play and then add reverb using space designer/ Logic's other reverb plugins?
Perhaps using them both in conjunction even?
I am writing alot of orchestral music at the moment so trying to decide on how to apply reverb to my tracks at the moment.
    Thanks.

  • Space designer export problem

    Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with space designer in that I'm trying to add a very faint, realistic reverb on a few tracks, which sound fine when I preview them in Soundtrack, but when I export the mix out there is this massive booming reverb like it's in a cave or something, regardless of what the Space Designer is set to. The problem goes away if I disable the space designer, but It'd really like to be able to use it.
Has anyone encountered this issue before? Anyone know what might be the problem?
    Thanks

    Another way of wording the question that I originally asked;
I recorded a ten second sine sweep. when I deconvolve I end up with a ten second impulse response. Is this normal? Do I now need to shorten the IR using space designer, or is it supposed to create a reverb tail automatically?
If anyone out there knows this answer please let me know.
