Strange phone setup in new build

Just moved into a brand new house and while trying to improve my (dreadful) broadband speed came across what I think might be incorrect wiring of the telephone system.
My setup is as follows:
The BT drop wire comes out from undergound in a grey BT branded box on the outside of the house. I thought at first it might be one of the external NTE boxes, however on opening it up there are no components inside just the BT cable from the cabinet in the street which is then connected to two white internal cable runs with 3-way crimps.
One of these cables runs to the opposite side of the house into the back of an Openreach branded NTE5 box. There is then an extension off the front part of the faceplate running to a socket in the bedroom.
The other one appears to run a few metres along to the right (inside the wall) to a "media faceplate" in the living room. This plate contains two incoming satellite feeds and a coax return to a box in the loft as well as a telephone connection. The telephone connection has no capacitor or anything on it so looks to me as though it should be a "slave" rather than connected directly to the incoming BT wire via the crimp.
There is then an extension off this mediaplate to a socket in the electricity cupboard which connects to the alarm system.
My question is this:
Should I have anything directly connected to the incoming dropwire other than the NTE5 box?
I thought the NTE5 was always to be the first point on which any other internal wiring should be connected out from?
As it stands just now there are essentially 2 other sockets connected (living room and alarm system) which are before the NTE5.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct or not before I go back to the builder and get them to correct it (or get BT to correct it and pass on the charge of moving the NTE5 to the living room and wiring off of that to the rest of the house).
Thanks

That is called Star Wiring, Openreach Engineers wouldn't/shouldn't have done that as they have been sepcifically instructed not to do it. Also that media plate would have been installed by the developer so best guess is they crimped it to the under ground cable.
Oh and it is only referred to as a drop wire when it connects overhead as it is a completely different type of cable.

  • Phone line to new build home - still not resolved ...

    Hi everyone
Having read a few posts on a similar subject, and being very patient, after yesterday's developments I felt I had to post.
Knowing we were due to move into our new build home I placed an order with BT on 7th June, appointment we were given was for 4th July. Moved into our new home, waited in all day on 4th July, no one showed up - so I called the "Order Management Team" and spent an hour trying to get some sense only to be told that the developers had not conformed to BT Openreach that all the work they needed to be done had been completed, and that there would be an update by evening of 12th July. I checked with developers and unsurprisingly they had confirmed to BT the day we moved in (28th June) that the work was complete. Phoned back to BT to tell them this and was then told that the update form Openreach was that the work to connect us would be completed on 17th July. Think you all know what happened next! Still no joy, only this time the reason given is still about the developer, even though they had previously confirmed that this was no longer an issue, so in the same call they then agreed the delay was due to cabling work that needed to be carried out, which would be done by 22nd July.....and lo and behold on 22nd we were back to the original excuse blaming the developer.
Then we get to the galling part. Our next door neighbours, the other part of the semi, who placed their order after we did, had been given yesterday as the date for their connection to take place. Returned home form work to find that both they, and their neighbours on the other side, who had gone with the Post Office for their line, although I understand they still need BT to do the work, have been connected, but we have not!! Rang up to enquire why and all I get is the robotic inflexible answer that the developer has not confirmed the work they need to do has been completed. Despite pointing out that this clearly was not the case as my neighbours have now been connected, the person on the other end of the line kept parroting the same answer. And to top it all I asked for a manager to call me back, was assured that they would do, and still nothing. I made a complaint almost 4 weeks ago but that seems to be absolutely pointless as it does not have any impact on the response you get. My partner decided to use the power of social media and tweeted about our situation and within 30 minutes she had a response from BT customer care, who said they would deal with the matter, but that has made no difference whatsoever, and they actually gave a totally different reason for the lengthy delay than I received the same day from the "help" line.
BT have a monopoly here and seem not to care at all about the poor customer service they provide as they know they have you over a barrel.
For a company that is supposed to be a world leader in telecommunications, they have a lot of work to do to communiacte effectively on a basic level with their customers.
Very frustrated by it all, and to round it off we have no mobile signal in our new home!

BT do not provide or maintain the external network. This is done by Openreach who work for all service providers. BT do not get any special treatment.

  • Questions on Marvell vs. intel Raid setup for new build

I’m getting ready to do my first build this weekend, and had some questions on the Asus p9x79pro motherboard’s raid controllers.  They are:
What is the difference between the Marvell controller and the intel software controller?
Why would I use one over the other?
Do the Marvell raid controllers need to be pre-installed using the F6 method, same as the intel raid controllers?
Here is my planned drive arrangement, feedback appreciated.
    (1) Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)  - OS (win7 64 bit), pagefile, & programs,  6gb sata on SSD caching port
    (2) Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - RAID 0 Media and projects, 6b sata port
    (1) Western Digital WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - media cache & renders
    (1) WB Black 32mb cache 3.0 Sata - Exports and non video file storage
Asus BD burner on 3gb port
      Thanks

What is the difference between the Marvell controller and the intel software controller?
I haven't tested it, but rumors are that Intel is marginally faster than Marvell.
Why would I use one over the other?
It depends on the number of ports in your system. That can be motherboard dependent.
Do the Marvell raid controllers need to be pre-installed using the F6 method, same as the intel raid controllers?
No. You can define a raid after you installed your OS by simply going into the BIOS.
On my motherboard, I have 2 Intel SATA 6 G ports and 2 Marvell SATA 6 G ports. The rest are SATA 3 G.
If that is the same in your case, I would do the following:
Crucial M4 on Intel SATA 6G
WD Black on Intel SATA 6G
    2 x WD Black/64 on Marvell SATA 6G in raid0
WD Black/32 on Intel SATA 3G
    DVD/BDR on Intel SATA 3G
one SATA 3G for eSATA connection.

  • Connected a new 2nd phone to my laptop and when asked to setup as new or restore, I chose to restore. Now thinking I should have setup as new. How do I change this?

I connected a new 2nd iphone to my laptop. When asked to setup as new or to restore from backup, I chose restore because I thought it would load all of the apps and their relevant data faster. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have done that. My 1st phone is my work phone and now my 2nd phone (personal) has my work Exchange information loaded in it and they are both syncing my personal phone number it seems. Maybe I should have set it up as new? How do I change that?

If you don't transfer the backup for your other iPhone or leave it as is, you must set up and transfer everything manually after restoring your new iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Iphone 4 askes to setup as new phone when plugged into iTunes

I have an iPhone 4 that has already been setup using iCloud.  I want to make a backup on my MAC.  When I plug it into iTunes it only gives me options to setup as a new phone or restore from backup.  It will not let me just back up this existing phone, authorize it on this computer or anything.  The oply option it is giving me is to setup as new or restore from backup.

  • Moved into New Build in August - still no phone li...

I know from reading various forums online that ours is not a unique problem but I'm not sure how it can be resolved. In a nutshell we moved into our new build home at the beginning of August. Once we had received confirmation of the completion date I placed my order with BT for a new phone line. I was advised that it would probably be easier to sort out the phone first and then add on broad band when that was done. My order was placed on 31 July. I was told an engineer would attend on 20 August to connect us up. So far so simple but then it all goes wrong. I check online and the engineer should be with me between 8 and 1. That's all fine. I'm working but my husband will be in as he is on a late shift. Come 12.30 no sign of the engineer and now my husband is concerned that if the engineer does show up, he will need to leave for work before the work is done. I call BT from work - I'm told that the engineer is en route but that he's been delayed. My husband and I therefore agree that I will leave work at lunchtime and be in should the engineer arrive in the afternoon. I call up again in the afternoon - I'm told that there is no engineer en route, I should never have been told that. The connection is delayed because of some outstanding works that need to be done. Thus begins the series of lies and untruths that lead us here. I am told time and time again that works will be done by X date, only to receive a text message telling me that it is not possible to provide the update and that BT will contact me again in due course. Then begins the passing of blame - BT tell me that my developer hasn't completed all the ground works, my developer tells me they have and that it is Open Reach who are delaying. This goes on for many weeks and many phone calls. Eventually I'm told that there is to be a meeting between my site manager and Open Reach on the site on Monday 28 October. Surprise surprise Open Reach fail to attend. Not only that, but they they refuse to reschedule despite requests from the site manager. There is clearly a communication issue here - my developer tells me they have done all they need to do. They are therefore not going to do anything else as they don't know what they need to do. The meeting would at least (one hopes) have cleared that up. I have called BT today and been told that a site surveyor is attending our site on Friday but it seems no one has bothered to tell the site manager (obviously I have passed this on and asked him to call to check arrangements).
So here we are many weeks on and still no phone line. I don't feel like I am getting any sort of proper answer from BT about what the issue is and of course Open Reach won't deal with me direct.
Given the number of discussions about this on various forums, does anyone have any advice or tips on how to resolve this. I know it seems like a small issue but it is starting to impact on us. For example we had some bad news in August that required making numerous overseas calls which we had to make on our mobiles. It really is beyond a joke now and I cannot see that it will be resolved this year!

    Hello Forum
    First post.
Been trying to arrange a home move for 2/3 weeks now (New Build).  Was told to get the address registered with Royal Mail. Have done this. Address still not appearing with BT. Get told on the phone someone will ring me back from offline team within 24 / 48 hrs but they never do.
Anybody have any experience than this? Any help to get this sorted much appreciated.

  • New build property, horrible BT phone line install...

    Hi all.
I am writing here because I have been thrown around by BT and the phone line installation team over the past one month, and I have just run out of patience.
The entire experience started in  late May, when I phoned BT and told them that I was moving house in 2 weeks and that I would need a new phone line installed at the new property, which is a new build. The BT sales team was more than happy to take my order, and since there was a charge of £130 for installation of phone line by itself, I decided to bundle both broadband and telephone line from BT directly to avoid that cost. I was a given an appointment on the 10th of June for my phone and broadband installation.
The 10th of June came and I took the day off work thinking all would be sorted by the end of the day. By the late afternoon no one ahd contacted me and there was no one who had come to the door. I called BT and had them check on my order and they said that "for some reason, the order says its still 'pending' and has not gone through..." After chatting with different people from different teams like sales, orders and them confrerring with engineers and seniors, I was finally told that the order could not be processed because I was in a new build and hence the system could not process a broadband order before there was an active phone line in the property, hence the failure of the order to go through. Next, I was given a date for the phone line order by itself to be done, and although I was frustrated here, I conceded and moved on hoping to get the issue sorted as quickly as possible. The new date was June 22nd for the phone line and then the broadband order to be placed thereafter. At this point I was not sent any emails or letter regarding my order with ym order number or any references, so I should have been sceptical, but I let it slide thinking it would be settled soon.
June 22nd came and I took leave off work again for the 8am - 1pm BT engineer visit. Once again, no one showed up or contacted me. I called BT again desperately hoping that this could not be happening again. When i asked the lady about my order scheduled for that day, she said that the order did not go through once again. It was still 'pending'! I was just shocked. I wanted to explode because twice BT had given me apppointment timings that could not be fulfilled and twice they left me in the lurch when they knew beforehand that the engineers would not show up, leaving me to take time from work which I cannot get back, much less the fact that I still do not even have a phone line. After much chatting with different people on the line I finally got them to book another order this time for July 9th for the phone line.
This time i called back on July 2nd  and July 6th to make sure that my order was on track and I was assured that after checking with the 'openreach engineers on their side' that my order was on track and the engineer would show up definitely on 9th of July.
Then the 9th came and I took the morning off from work to wait for the engineer.Yet again, BT managed to show me how poorly they treat customers.  No engineer showed up again, and as was becoming a habit now, I had to phone BT to enquire about my order and discover that the engineer was not going to show up today as well. When pressed much more the person on the other end finally relented that the cables from the exchange to my new build property need to be set up and are in the process of being done. I would then get a call when BT/Openreach finally finish this. I felt let down, especially when I asked how long that would be since I have already been waiting for a more than month for BT to carry this out and also agreed to pay the £130 set up charge for the phone line since they wanted to process the phone line order alone first. Her response was nothing more than a "I cannot tell for sure.." and at this point I could tell that meant it could be a really long while more before getting a phone line /  broadband, if ever BT is interested in setting it up.
Is there any way to actually check and see if BT are setting up a connection from the exchange to the property for the phone line and how long it would take before I can finally get a simple phone line here?
Sorry if this was a bit of rant but it is rather draining and also costly for me having to deal with BT and wait for them when they could simply communicate with me better to inform me of their engineers' decisions.
    Abi
*EDIT* I have also spoken to the developer of the property and they have informed me that the flat is ready for a phone line to be installed, and that BT is only currently fitting phone lines to the building across the road and not my block, so that means someone at BT/Openreach is telling me the worng thing and the engineer is just refusing to come out now. I have additionally spoken to some of the other residents who moved in before me in the same block and they have had phone lines connected to their property by BT so I think this problem needs sorting out asap by BT please.
    Thank you.

    Hi
It seems that I am caught in the same endless maelstrom of bt/open reach inability to meet installation obligations.
We have a new build home on a small private development. No cable available regrettably so all 6 of our neighbours use bt phone and std broadband.
Ordered both services end April to be told that install appointment was 30 May - seemed a long time but accepted. Had whole series of emails and texts from bt reminding of appointment and arrival of modem, but late evening 29 May text arrived saying order delayed and put back to 13 June. Called following morning and got the run around took 40 mins to get any answer of sense that said ,Line work was required and open reach we're dealing withi it.
13 June came and went no one called or advised that appointment would not be met. Again many phone calls but same answer line issues. My developer tells me that the lines are installed per spec, in fact we have a black network cable present through a conduit next our front door but no terminal box to join up to white phone line wires to inside phone points. Offered bt a photo of this but they will not accept it. Just keep saying line issues holding up install. Either way unless this work is done the it will be impossible to connect even if other work had rally to be done - not interested!
This week promised that all would be done, 16th the 17th and then 18th -nothing again and hence more phone calls.
Issue handed to resolution team who calked today to say work schedule for 12 July! More than two months since order - just don't believe them and asked them to escalate - no hopes up!
In the meantime our phone no rings out and people wonder why we are not answering! Complete shambles.
In 2014 this should be easy meat to BT who seem tied up in a complaint type process that resolves nothing.
I have no real choice but BT and their performance is just hopeless. Advised ofcom but don't deal with individual complaints - this is consumer hell and very very frustrating.

  • New line at a new build

    Hi
On the 18/2/14 I ordered a new line and bb package to my new build property. My current Infinity 2 services were terminated on the 28/2/14 and I was given the standard 4 week wait to be connected back up again but on standard ADSL broadband as Infinity didn’t come up on the system yet (which it now does btw).
Everything was setup for the 27th March, I took the day off as holiday and no engineer turned up even though I was sent numerous txts and emails saying they would. No one contacted me and I got no explanation why this occurred. I rang up the next day and was told about some Openreach work that hadn’t been completed. Another update today and its now scheduled for completion on the 15/16th April so I assume I might be able to reschedule then if its completed.
That will mean 8 weeks without a phone line or bb yet I am continually charged (like I’m still living at my old address) for services I can not use at all. On the 3/3/14 a full payment was made, then on the 21/3/14 another which had discounts for line rental (I make an annual payment) which came out in £1.98 credit, but the breakdown of the bill has a charge for £25 for Infinity 2 to begin with which I don’t even have. I would of thought that as I have no services what so ever I should only be given credit each month for the line rental I have already paid for.
If possible could some one please check my order as I would like a refund for what I cannot use and terminate any further payments until my services have been installed (which could be anyone’s guess knowing Openreach timescales). I have no use of BT WIFI or BT Sport and as nothing is within my range.
    Regards
    Chris

  • Is BT Infinity Available to New Builds ...

    Hi,
I know there are several posts about this, but 1 more wont hurt.
I previously had BT Infinity, and frankly, loved it. I had the full 40 down 10 up and couldn't rate the service high enough. Perfect.
I moved house a couple of months ago, to a new build - im connected to the Wantage exchange. Big Yay, its infinity enabled! A friend of mine lives just across the road, in one of the pre-existing houses and he has Infinity - I thought I would join up again after my awesome experience before!
However, it seems that I cannot get Infinity - for reasons I cannot yet fathom. The postcode checker states that its available in my area - I know this is not so reliable. I have also checked with my phone number which states that it is not. Strange.
I had a chat with a few of the neighbours .. Also on the new build development ... in fact 2 doors away, and they are having Infinity installed ....
So my question is ... What's wrong with me ... Do BT not like me anymore? Or, as I suspect is more likely, is there an error in the data somewhere and I have simply been omitted ... We were one of the last houses to be built so its entirely possible.
In case the mods take pitty on me, I have PM my details. It would also be useful if you could let me know which Cabinet im on, there are 2 close by, both of which are the Infinity cabinets (Seem Like new installs as there are no older ones).
    Thanks
    Roebuck

Just thought I would update this thread for the mods.
I have had a phone line problem this week and have duly had an engineer out. All went well Phone is fixed - Even turned up on time!!
Whilst he was here I cheekily asked about Infinity, which he stated should be no issue, as I practically live on the exchange in terms of cable length, and im connected to CAB 26, which is fibre enabled and right on the exchange.
He did also state that the postcode in which I live does not exist on the BT and Openreach system - Odd, its been registered with Royal Mail for 3 months - new Sat Navs can find it ...
Anyway, I will wait for the update from you guys, please bear the above in mind if you are checking any databases, I suspect they are incorrect.
    Thanks
    Roebuck

  • Strange phone number in my iphone

    Dear Friends
after i started icloud in my phone, i found lots of strange phone number in my contact list. I do not understad how it happened. I have checked that those number were never had any contact ( mail, skyp, viber) with me before.

IIf the strange SMS are coming from known contacts, that's normal for iMessages that don't arrive and are converted to text.  Don't know why but it happens when my bf is overseas and his company phone can't access data - the iMessages he tries to send have a lot of symbols when they come as text but none when the finally arrive as iMessages.  Usually it's mostly lots of @@@@@@.
if you didn't buy the phone new, the previous owner may still be linked to the phone and they are his/her messages you are getting.  I have seen a lot of posts about this on various forums and can't remember the fix but it's to do with iTunes and you may need to contact the previous owner.
if you did buy the phone new, check with the store that it wasn't used as a demo model.  They may be able to assist you setup your messages.  If not, you may need to search for solutions online or hopefully someone else who's had the exact issue may be able to help you here.  Good luck.

  • IPad 2, restore & setup as new, then restore from backup?

    Confused yet? I am!
So here we go, yes, I'm new to the forum, I've had my iPad 2 since Oct. 2011. And No, this problem isn't in my head.
Last week, I finally updated to iOS 5.1.1, and I deeply regret doing so. I had NO issue before the update, and now, my battery is garbage.
I used to be able to go 2 - 3 days before having to charge and that's with an average of 4 hours a day. Now, after just a few hours (5) I have to charge and it takes forever. I've been working with Apple, but they having given me an option I'm happy with.
    1) Mail my unit back to them to switch out with a refurb. I am against this option as I like my unit. I didn't originally buy a refurb and I should have to accept one now. The screen on my unit is perfect, no bleed or dead pixels. I've taken immaculate care of mine and I'm afraid I'll get a unit I'm not happy with. Plus, it will be running iOS 6, which I'm not ready for.
Option two is...and this needs to be done whether I return my unit or not, is a restore and setup as new. Which means I would loose all my information buried deep within my apps. This would also install iOS 6 on my unit.
    My question is this...
If I do a Restore, Setup as new, can I then go back in and do a restore from back up, to put all my stuff back in its place.
I'd love to hear from anyone that has any insight, suggestions, experience, or comments about this.
    How did you handle it?
    What was the outcome?
Did you involve Apple in the resolution?
    Or,
Is it just not worth dealing with and I should just keep using it until it won't take a charge.
I know there have been a million posts about this, and I've read a lot of them, but I just haven't found a solution yet.
And before anyone states the obvious, ALL locations are off, all email accounts are set to manual, there are no notifications set.
In the past week, I've done 3 reset all settings, drained battery until system shut down, and did an uninterrupted full charge.
I've reset network settings. I make sure apps are closed by double tapping Home button, and done a hard reset by holding power button and home button until apple icon appears. I'm at a loss, and don't know what else to do.

First, make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8).  Second, what version of iOS 7 was your old phone running, i.e. 7.0, 7.0.1, 7.0.2? If your back-up was made with a version of iOS that is newer than the version on your new phone, it will not sync. For example, if your back-up was of a phone running iOS 7.0.4, and your new phone was running 7.0.2 out of the box, the back up will not sync to the new phone until it is updated to iOS 7.0.4.

The problem comes when trying to install Windows XP on the single SATA drive (I don't want a RAID array - mainly as I only have 1 hard drive!).
I press F6 as instructed to install the SATA drive - I have created a disk with the necessary driver files from the MSI website.
Based on other posts I have seen I have put all the files except "txtsetup.oem" in another folder on the floppy (either "\win_XP" or "\winXP"). However I still get the same error message:
"file \x32\jraid.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2108 in d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c"
I am beginning to think I can't install XP to a SATA drive.  Can anyone help with this? Is there an "official" driver floppy disk I can get from MSI in exactly the right format?
Alternatively is it worthwhile buying a small standard IDE drive and installing XP to that to get me going and then install the SATA drive once XP is going? Would it then be possible to shift XP onto the faster SATA drive?
    Thanks

if you using 1 sata drive you dont set it up as a raid , in the sata options set it up as ide enhanced also in this mode no need for pressing f6 just make sure that the sata is set to 1st boot hdd , if you using 1 sata and 1 ide hdd and tring to isntall on the sata disconnect the ide hdd because it will mess with your drive letters in windows ... if you goin raid ( achi mode is only for sata 2 drives with NCQ = native command queing and your drives have to support this mode ) then in the sata drives portion set it to raid ( achi if your drives support it )  in the force part set it to force gen 1 ( for sata 1 drives ) force gen 2 ( for sata 2 drives ) then you will need to set up the raid config in the intel raid config ( its the next post screen telling you press CTRL+I ) set it up reboot reneter bios set hdd priority to intel raid 0 then intsall windows but press f6 ... yes i ran it 2 ways single sata drive and now raided 80's in raid 0 ( i dont have NCQ support yet )

  • I deleted my iCloud account, but now I can't use Find My iPhone. And I can't setup a new account because it writes that this account was assigned to iCloud already...

Hi guys. I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5... Its great, I wanted to test out the new iCloud so I enabled it on first iOS 5 setup.
So now I wanna delete it. So I did. Because my battery just wont work the way it used to on iOS 4.3.5. I guess it tries to connect to the internet so it could auto backup stuff. Well I dont need it. Mainly because I don't want to pay for extra space, and my free 5GB are almost done. Also I rather back it up on my PC.
I deleted my iCloud account but now I can't use FindMyiPhone! When I connect to the app it wont find my phone. When I enabled iCloud again it worked.
So I deleted it again and it stoped working again... I tried to setup a new account via MobileMe "Settings> email blah blah blah" and it didn't work because the account was already assigned to use iCloud only I guess...
    What should I do?

Its solved I just restored it to that point
