Sub bullets

Just wondering if there is a standard to use for sub-bullets in professionally designed documents (such as brochures).
Hollow bullets are standard for non-pro documents, such as reports, but I have never seen them used in pro pieces designed for public.
Usually I try to rework the text to avoid sub-bullets altogether, or do not put anything in front of them, but have a case now where it looks unavoidable.
Anyone have any insight into this?

If I'm designing, I usually use em dashes underneath bullets. Sometimes
I use square bullets with diamonds for sublists. I've used fingers,
arrowheads, stars, checks. I just finished a book where the author
insisted on ellipses instead of bullets.

  • Pages 5.2 won't allow differently colored sub-bullets in lists as it did in previous versions.

    MY MAIN QUESTION:
    Prior to Pages 5, I had a template than included a green bullet (with black in the text) with a sub-indented bullet that was blue.  Now, in Pages 5.2 (Mavericks) I find it very hard to recreate this using styles and/or lists.  Whenever I change the color of the sub-bullet, it changes the color of the main bullet.  Any thoughts on this?
    SECONDARILY
    The list and styles functions in Pages 5.2 are somewhat complicated. I wish there were some sort of tutorial on the best way to use these.  I like the ability to tab to the next bullet indent, but not sure how to set the various styles for the indent.  Are lists independent of styles?  Or are they connected.  Not sure.

    Nah... I don't believe in hanging on to outdated software, even if it is superior in some ways or if I'm just used to it.  I'd rather learn how to use the newer version to my advantage and deal with the shortcomings.  It is a losing battle to try to "stick it out" with the older software, especially if you want to update your OS and take advantage of it.  Eventually, it won't work and you limit yourself by sticking to the old software.  I DO believe in complaining and submitting feedback to the developer to let them know stuff is not up to snuff.  But, I'll say, any new software has a learning curve and a degree of adaptation required if you are not used to using it.  When I went from Word to Pages back in 2008 or 2009, I lost a lot of functionality, but I learned to deal with it and ended up appreciating Pages versus Word.  For the most part, the transition to the new Pages, hasn't been that bad... there have been a few things I've had to change and adapt to, but I do like the new Pages in many ways.  The bullet point thing is annoying though and I'd like to figure out a decent solution, but it does not make me regret using Pages 5 on the whole.  Plus, I have multiple employees, and would like us all to be using the same software.

  • Copying sub-bulleted list _and_ keeping the master format

    Super basic question: how to make sub-bulleted lists formatted nicely?
    It's a follow up of the above topic. When I copy paste a full slide, it loses the property that sub-lists (pressing tab) come with smaller bullets. I can of course re-apply master, but then all my changes to the text (e.g. colored or bolded text) goes back do the default font. This is really annoying, it means that I cannot copy-paste slides from one presentation to another

    I have no problem with drag and drop on any of our systems.

  • Sub-bulleting and Customising Master Slides on iPad 2

    Hi, i got my ipad2 just a few weeks ago and i'm still figuring out how to do basic things like adding sub-bullets and changing master slides in Keynote. I know this can be done easily on Mac OS X, but I only have this iPad running iOS.
    Suggestions? Please don't tell me to buy a Mac

    Try this. Delete the account and restart the iPad.
    Once it has restarted set it up again
    Go to your iPad home screen and tap Settings.
    Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Tap Add Account.
    Scroll down and tap Other.
    Tap Add Mail Account.
    Put the name you want people to see when they get mail from you in the Name field.
    Enter your username in the Address field. For example, [email protected]
    Enter your password in the Password field.
    In the Description field enter the name you want to use to identify the account.
    Tap Next. If you get an error message at this point, tap OK.
    Make sure that IMAP is selected at the top of the screen.
    In the Incoming Mail Server section, change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com
    Now enter 993 in the Server port and set SSL to on.
    Then scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com
    Now enter 465 in the Server port and set SSL to on.
    Tap Save.
    Your settings will now be verified and you'll then see your Account screen. If this doesn’t happen automatically tap your account to access your email.

  • Formatting the text in a cell

    Hello Experts,
    I have a word doc in where it is having a bullet list format. I do not need to have actual bullets in the webi doc, I am replacing the bullet with an "*", and the sub-bullet with an "-". I have tried to play around with all of the different properties, but I cant get what i want
    Example:
    *This is the textin the diocument
    I would like to have this format all the way down(only 1 hyphen)
    I would like to have this format all the way down(only 1 hyphen)
    *This is the textin the diocument
    I would like to have this format all the way down(only 1 hyphen)
    I would like to have this format all the way down(only 1 hyphen)
    Any suggestions on how to do this?
    Also is there an carriage return or new line command I can use in the formula bar.
    Thanks in advance
    Niraj

    Hello Khaled,
    Thanks for the response!  Yes I have tried to do what you suggested, and  it does not look like a bullet list, it has the bullets and subbullets in the document, but they are all positioned far left.  I have tried to format by adding spaces, but it does not come out right.
    I do have a example of what I need this to look like in webi, but i am unable to attach a screenshot.
    Any help on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • FM import to RH: lists

    Technical Communication Suite, RoboHelp HTML, WebHelp
    I'm importing FM8 book into RH7 HTML.
    I've done some research and I see that conversion of lists
    between FM source files and RH HTML is very problematic. I'm
    confused and haven't been able to resolve my particular problem
    through research.
    My FM bullet parragraph tag looks like:
    Indent First: 18pt
    Indent Left: 28pt
    tab stop: 28pt L
    Autonumber format:
    \t
    Everything lines up perfectly in FM and when saved as PDF.
    When import to RH, I DO NOT select "Convert AutoNumber to
    HTML list". In RH the first line is indented too much. The HTML
    looks like this:
    <p class=FM_Bullet>•<span style="font-family:
    'Times New Roman'; font-size:
    7.0pt;">   </span>
    The three spaces (   ) indents too
    much; two spaces (  ) not enough.
    One solution I'm considering is to search for
    <span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size:
    7.0pt;">   </span>
    And replace with:
    <span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size:
    13.0pt;"> </span>
    Manipulating the font size of a single space gets me darn
    close. However, this solution is inelegant, time consuming, and
    possibly prone to error in a large document (I'm working with 300+
    pages). And it doesn't work well with numbered lists that go into
    double digets.
    Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,
    Stan

    If you have simple bullets and steps,
    "Convert AutoNumber to HTML List" may work for you.
    If you have nested lists (such as steps with bullets, bullets
    with sub bullets)
    the nested lists become entangled, and also tangle up
    headings that follow, preventing topic breaks.
    When you look at the HTML code, you can see the problems. The
    </UL> (end of list) gets misplaced for the various nested
    lists.
    "Convert AutoNumber to HTML List" does not work for my
    application.
    darbyzz,
    Here's what I did to make my bullets and steps work out.
    - I did not use Convert AutoNumber to HTML List.
    - I set up a secondary FM template, just for RoboHelp, and
    use it just for my help files.
    In this template, I don't use indents before the first level
    bullets.
    For second level lists, I use a format that includes an
    empty place holder (as advised by Jain).
    example: a:< ><a+>.\t
    I also use a specific tag to reset a list to number 1 (I
    found that was necessary).
    - When mapping in RoboHelp, I left my first-level list tags
    to Source,
    - I map my second-level list tags to BodyLevel1, which, in
    its default state,
    is indented just enough for my needs.
    This works pretty well for me, not perfectly, but I've
    settled.

  • Is there a difference in generatePDFOutput between Livecycle ES2 (9) and Livecyle ES (8)

    I know that we are way behind in terms of Livecycle ES versions, but we have recently installed Livecycle ES2 (9.0) on a set of new Websphere 7 servers. All seems to be progressing will in terms of systems integrating with the new servers, but we have run into an issue with the way PDF documents are rendered in Livecycle ES2 (9.0)/WAS 7 versus Livecycle ES (8.0) / WAS 6.
    We have a few XDP templates that have Rich Text Fields with a Data Format of XHTML that are not rendering the same when using PX measurement.
    EXAMPLE: <p style="left-margin: 15px;">
    Using the API generatePDFOutput under Livecycle ES (8.0) the text is indent and all displays well in the rendered PDF. But, in Livecycle ES2 (9.0) there is no indention and the text is aligned to the left margin of the field.
    Here is the data that is used:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <form1>
       <RTF_Field>
      <body xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
      <p>This is a <i>Rich Text Field.</i></p>
      <p>It is filled using <b><i>XHTML</i></b> data.</p>
      <p></p>
      <p>The following should be 3 indented bullets. The first is indented 15<b><i>px</i></b> and the other two are indented 30<b><i>px</i></b>:</p>
      <p></p>
      <p style="margin-left: 15px;">&#8226;&#160;&#160;&#160;Bullet 1</p>
      <p style="margin-left: 30px;">&#186;&#160;&#160;&#160;Sub-Bullet 1</p>
      <p style="margin-left: 30px;">&#186;&#160;&#160;&#160;Sub-Bullet 2</p>
      </body>
      </RTF_Field>
    </form1>
    As you can see there is no HTML table code in the prefill. I know that that is not allowed.
    Here is an image of the results on the old Livecycle ES (8.0)
    Here is an image of the results on the new Livecycle ES2 (9.0)
    Has anyone else run into this issue? I am not an expert when it comes to the administrative side of Livecycle ES, but is there a configuration, or setting, issue that we may be missing in the Livecycle or Websphere consoles? Is there some form of tranformation of the html code on the older server that is not active on the new one? Is there a difference in the HTML code that was valid on Livecycle ES (8.0) versus Livecycle ES2 (9.0)?
    Any insight would be grately appreciated.

    I think you are right!!! Just noticed, I came here via a link.  I'll repost and hopelfully the mods will delete this.
    Thanks.

  • Formatting in an interactive PDF

    Hi,
    I have a form that has a section that needs to be able to go into auto numbering/sub bullets,etc as needed (like an outline format).  Is this possible?
    Also, within that same section, there are cases where the user wants to copy from a Word document, keeping the same outline type format, into the form.  I've tried but it gets distorted.  Is there a way?

    Hi,
    The current version of LC Designer doesn't do bullet points or numbered lists very well.
    Radzmar has a solution here: Automatic Bullets?
    By default when you drag a textfield onto the form it has a plain text format. If you select the textfield and go to the Object > Field palette you can change the format to Rich Text. This allows shortcuts for bold (Control+B), etc at run time. Also when the form is opened in Reader/Acrobat if the user presses Control+E (edit) then they can set the formatting. While this will improve the experience of pasting from Word, you will still have problems with numbered lists and bullet points.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Help! I'm desperate, imported PPT's are giving me nightmares on export!

    Greetings fellow Captivators, it's my first post here. I hate to jump right in and beg for help, but I'm really beside myself here, and am losing ground/time on a major project due to this bug/error/mistake.
    First let me explain the project to you:
    1. I start by importing a 2007 PPT file, with only simple timings (EX: wait 10 seconds, show bullet, wait 10 seconds, show bullet, etc...) NOTHING FANCY.
    2. Then, we had our content expert narrate all of these slides.
    3. Inserted throughout the project are FLV's that play on their own slides, no problems here.
    When I go to export, things work fine, everything exports and I can load the whole project up onto our FTP server (eventually it will live in a Moodle install...)
    BUT
    Many of the narrated slides have strange behavior on the LAST TIMING of the slide, the are erratic, they don't always finish their animation, or they pause, and you have to hit play to move the last animation the final few pixels...
    This causes horrible UI problems, the narration is still playing in the background, but the bullet get stuck, and the user has no idea what to do, when they narration DOES finish, the slide doesn't advance because its "stuck", they then have to push a combination of play and next to advance the slide, total disaster.
    The problem is inconsistant, and happens slightly different each time, but it's serious issue and my client is obviously frustrated as well.
    Does anyone have experience with problematic timing on timed elements on imported slides?
    Is the slide trying to pause until the narratation is finished?
    Are there specific export settings that could be causing this?
    You can see the problem here:
    http://greatseminarsonline.com/falling/
    On the FOURTH slide in, titled "Prep For Visit" the last bullet, titled "Explore" should 3 have sub-bullets that load....
    Thanks in advance for all your help, when Captivate 5 comes out for the Mac, I look forward to being able to provide help and assistance back to the community (Apple nerd in the house...)

    Hi there
    Have you noticed if there is a pattern? For example, where things get "stuck", is it always a slide with an FLV?
    I've seen it often happen where slides with FLVs get stuck and don't move on by themselves. Not sure of any workaround, but thought it worth mentioning.

  • Certain texts of a document vanished and is untraceable, ie no earlier versions available despite haviing autosave enabled?

    I created a basic plan for my dissertation which was sent to my lecturer who added comments as is possible.
    this was back in October, I have made over 3000 words of notes and research to this since then all of which was sub bullet points and in red ink including references and hyperlinks.  The last time I used it would of been this time last week and it saved
    etc perfectly well no problems.
    On opening the document 2 days ago it has all vanished?!  All my additions are gone and only the original bare document with my lecturers notes remain?  This seems impossible to me, as in order for me to do this myself I would have had to have
    copied and deleted multiple times so as to not remove these remaining "headings"?
    I have made multiple changes to this document over a 6 month period and nothing like this has ever happened before on this document or any other.
    I have SkyDrive so thought I would have a backup of this on there since I am 100% sure I was ultra careful to do so?  This seems very unusual to me that a document would be so selective in loosing text?  Is there anything I can do, is the text
    in some way recoverable or hidden or is it gone for good and if so how did this happen?

    It's possible you've been using Track Changes and have switched from one of the markup views to the 'Original' view. See the dropdown under Review>Tracking. If it shows 'Final' or 'Original' switch to 'Original: Show Markup'. Another possibility is that
    your additions have been formatted as hidden text, in which case click on the ¶ symbol on the Ribbon's Home tab.

  • How can I allow reader to progressively reveal levels of a list?

    If I create a document with a list with multiple levels, e.g.:
    1. major category
    1.1 subordinate category
    1.1.1 even more subordinate
    1.1.2 another even more subordinate
    1.2 a second subordinate
    1.2.1 more subordinate to second subordinate
    1.2.2 you get the picture
    2. do this all over again
    Is there a way I can allow the user to read the document just seeing the major categories (1., 2., ...) and also allow them to reveal just the sub-categories they are interested in reading more about?
    E.g the reader reads 1., 2. and decides he wants to learn more about what's in 1. So he clicks on it and sees 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4. Now he wants to read 1.3 and 1.3.1, 1.3.2, 1.3.3, etc. so he clicks on 1.3
    How can I put that feature into a Pages document?
    thanks,

    Thanks for the insights. I was hoping for something more like the way you open and close folders and subfolders in the Finder, so document readers could open and close individual bullets or numbers and their sub-bullets, etc.
    It took a while, but pretty much every document reader now supports links of some sort, maybe someday they'll have the ability to open and close nested text.

  • Odd scenario where type inference doesn't work

    I've come across an odd scenario where type inference doesn't work and instead I'm greeted with a message:
    incompatible types
    found : java.lang.Object
    required: java.util.Set
    Here's the scenario (built with JDK6, javac):
    public class GenericTest {
         public static void test() {
              Set testList = GenericTest.method1(new Class[] { ArrayList.class });
         public static <I> I method1(Class<List>[] params) {
              return null;
    }Yet when I remove the type information from the method1 params, the class builds.
    public class GenericTest {
         public static void test() {
              Set testList = GenericTest.method1(new Class[] { ArrayList.class });
         public static <I> I method1(Class[] params) {
              return null;
    }Why would removing the type information from the parameter have any effect whatsoever on the return type?

    ilmaestro wrote:
    Though casting the parameter as you mentioned resolves the error (because it eliminates the generic), it still doesn't explain why changes to the parameter effect an error message having to do with the return type.It is due the call to the method with the "erased" type Class[] (not a Class<?>[], for example) and a return type resolution. Unchecked conversion (from the raw type to the parametrized type) is applied to the method argument and the return type of the method is determined as an erasure of the declared return type (JLS 3rd edition, [Method Result and Throws Types|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/third_edition/html/expressions.html#15.12.2.6], first bullet, second sub-bullet). Erasure of the return type is a java.lang.Object, which is incompatible with the java.util.Set.
    In the second example, method parameter is already a raw type, and unchecked conversion is not required. The return type of the method is I and is correctly inferred to the java.util.Set.
    If the method is called with a non-raw type, then return types are inferred correclty. For example, following code compiles fine.
    public class GenericTest {
      public static void test() {
        Set testList = GenericTest.method1((Class<List>[]) (new Class[] { ArrayList.class }));
      public static <I> I method1(Class<List>[] params) {
        return null;
    }This example is not "correct" due to the cast to Class<List>[], because such array can't contain Class<ArrayList> as an element (Class<ArrayList> is not a child of Class<List>). And this makes definition Class<List>[] almost useless, because such array should contain only List.class values.

    > I don't like mixing numbered items and with bulleted items.
    My rule is that you use numbers when things have to happen in that order, and bullets when it doesn't matter. So steps in changing a transmission would be numbered, but a list of parts in one of the steps could be bulleted.
    I prefer the en bullet, although many professional designers prefer smaller, as small as a centered period. (Never, ever use an em bullet, which makes it look like someone attacked your page with a .45 magnum).

  • BI Publisher -RTF Template issue: Output report not maintaining text with bullets and numberings.

    Hi All,
    I am currently working with generating reports using BI Publisher. My issue is that when I will preview the output(in PDF and RTF) format's  of the newly created template, then, if the data coming from DB have some bullets or numbering, then the BI publisher output will ignore the same and will show the complete data as one single line.
    For example if the data in the DB Field is like below:
    The XYZ has the below sub-parts:
    ABC : This again has two parts:
    abc1
    abc2
    CDE
    FGH
    Then  this data will appear as below in the BI Publisher output report's:
    The XYZ has the below sub-parts: •   ABC : This again has two parts:  o     abc1  o   abc2   •    CDE    •   FGH
    I want the format of the data (with bullets and number's) should be maintained in the BI Publisher Report as well, but I am unable to find any solution for the same.
    Any help on the same is much appreciated.

  • Add a bullet correctly below the text in the previous line.

    Hi All,
    I know how to add bullets in a word doc, but I dont know how to set the range.listformat.leftindent property to match this particular reuirement i.e
    1.1.1.   some text
               (add a bullet below s in some)
    normal text
    (add a bullet below n)
    i.e check where start of the text is , in the previous line add a bullet right below this text dynamically

    Hi Apoorva,
    I'm not quite sure what your uiquirement is, seems that you want to insert a sub-level bullet below the previous paragraph. You can use this method to create a sub-level bullet in the word document.
    Range.ListFormat.ListIndent
    For example:
    Application app = new Application();
    app.Visible = true;
    Document doc = app.Documents.Add();
    Paragraph para= doc.Content.Paragraphs.Add();
    Range rng = para.Range;
    para = doc.Content.Paragraphs.Add();
    para.Range.ListFormat.ApplyBulletDefault();
    para.Range.InsertBefore("test1");
    para = doc.Content.Paragraphs.Add();
    para.Range.ListFormat.ApplyBulletDefault();
    //para.Range.ListFormat.ListOutdent();
    para.Range.ListFormat.ListIndent();
    para.Range.InsertBefore("test2");
