Subscriptions in google play?

Hi - Much to my dismay I have just found that the DPS viewer does not support subscriptions in google play. Does anyone know a workaround to this? Can I engineer something from the google end of things?

So then the answer is a definitive no, even if we tried to set it up through Google. Correct?  I would appreciate a review of Adobe's positioning copy on all of their product descriptions to include the caveats about what works with what.  For example, here is copy from the Overview of digital publishing workflow page ( http://help.adobe.com/en_US/digitalpubsuite/using/WS67cb9e293e2f1f60-21ba9a4512e5e5e0b8d-7 fff.html):
"Use the Viewer Builder to create a custom viewer app that you can submit to the Apple Store, Android Market, or Amazon Appworld. If you obtain a Single Edition license, you can create a single-issue app. If you have a DPS subscription, you can enable subscriptions, push notifications, and Omniture analytics."
Adobe fails to mention or even footnote any feature limitations across platforms.  That has caused us tremendous pain and back peddling with our clients.  Unless we dig deeper or search the user forums, none of these inconsistencies are accurately spelled out.  My request is that, at the very least, Adobe's positioning copy includes footnotes to better inform their customers.

  • Android Subscriptions & Google Play Magazines

Currently, Adobe DPS does not support subscriptions for Android apps. However, big publishers like Hearst which also use DPS are on Google Play Magazines. How do they do their subscription then? Or do they have an early update of some kind?

They use the enterprise edition of DPS with a custom entitlement server. With this solution it is possible to offer your own subscription service, which isn't paid via google checkout.

  • Can you make a subscription based magazine to sell on Google Play?

I know you can do it for iPad, and now also for Amazon. But what about for Google? Can the Viewer Builder create an app that can handle subscriptions for that marketplace?

You can set up in-app billing for selling individual folios, but Google Play (formerly Android Market) doesn't have subscription options, unlike Apple and Amazon. You would need to set up a custom entitlement server using an Enterprise account to set up a subscription. Here's info on publishing to Android/Amazon:

  • Google Play and Bill my Telstra account

If you're a Telstra mobile customer with an Android device, you can now bill your Google Play purchases (such as apps, games, movies, books and even music) to your Telstra account. Or if you're on Telstra Pre-Paid you can pay for your Google Play purchases from your main account balance, providing you have sufficient funds available.
Charge an app to your Telstra bill or pay with your pre-paid recharge credit
You will firstly need to have a registered Google Play account. Then follow the below steps to successfully bill an app, movie, game, book or music to your Telstra account:
    Step 1
Choose your app, book, movie, music or game
    Step 2
    Click Accept and Buy
    Step 3
    Select Bill my Telstra account
    Step 4
    Confirm your billing details
    Step 5
Click Accept and Buy Once your payment has been authorised you can then open the app, game, movie, music or book
Note:To purchase via your Pre- Paid account you will need sufficient funds available from your main account balance to cover your purchase. You are not able to use your Bonus Cap Credit to purchase apps, books, movies, games or music.
Things you should know about 'bill my Telstra account
You can set your spend limit to $0 which will grey out the 'Bill my Telstra' account option. You will still be able to pay for items via credit card. You will need to call us on 13 22 00 to set up or change the spend limits.
Your 'Bill my Telstra account' is greyed out because the content that you are about to purchase has exceeded the limit for carrier billing which is set to $100. Please use a credit card to complete your purchase. Alternatively you can increase the per month limit by calling us on 125 111. This can be increased to $500 per month but has to be done in $100 increments. Pre-paid customers have a $500 per month content spend limit.
Your 'Bill my Telstra account' is greyed out when the content that you are about to purchase has exceeded the content spend limit for a one off' app, book, game, music or movie purchase using Bill my Telstra account as a payment option. This limit is set to $100 and can't be increased. If you want to purchase items over this amount you need to use a credit card.
You can set your 'Bill my Telstra account' for Google Play or other BigPond content services spend limit to $0. This will restrict the service from purchasing any app, movie, book, game, music or BigPond content service like AFL Live.
Google Play can identify you as a Telstra customer from your SIM card, so even if you bring your own device (BYO) to Telstra you'll still be able to access Bill my Telstra account.
Bill my Telstra account won't work outside of Australia. You can however use your credit card to purchase apps. Make sure you set up International Roaming before you leave Australia and or take up an International Roaming Data Pack. Pre-Paid customers international roaming is automatically activated.
Bill my Telstra account for Google Play content includes in-app purchases.
Free downloads or credit card transactions will not appear on your bill, only charges using 'Bill my Telstra account' or any chargeable Google play transactions will appear on your bill.
You can check your list of purchases within your Google Play account. An email receipt from Google Play with an Order Number should also be sent to you when you make a purchase. Otherwise you can check your Telstra unbilled data by contacting us on 125 111; you can also view Pre-Paid usage - however, while our systems update regularly, as data is coming in from third parties, you should not necessarily expect data to always appear in our systems on the same day.
Bill my Telstra account for Digital Content Services is only available on devices with a SIM (e.g. not T-Hub), so you should have PIN security set. You also have the option of setting Google Play to request a log in for every purchase attempt.
Things you should know about downloading apps and downloaded apps, including app refunds
If you are logged in with your Gmail, then all the content you have downloaded (both paid and free) can be transferred between devices.
If you are moving from Pre-paid and have excess credit, you can use the credit to purchase Google Apps and transfer them to your new device before you migrate off your pre-paid service. But remember you need to choose an Android device on the Telstra network.
Once an app is installed, customers may be required to pay for premium elements such as live streaming, live events, live traffic for Navigation, credits for gaming etc. These are in-app purchases. A paid purchase is an outright payment to purchase that app, and that happens upfront before downloading.
Bill my Telstra account is limited to transactions under $100 each. A lot of shopping apps are free to download and these apps usually allow you to purchase large price items via credit card, Pay Pal and other new payment technologies due to the large dollar amount.
You have 15 minutes to return an App you don't want after the transaction and download has completed. There is a refund button within the app and process you need to follow to return the app. You won't be charged as long as you return the app within 15 minutes. This only supports App, Book, Movie, Game or music purchases, not in-App purchases like AFL Live or NRL Live monthly subscriptions.
You need to contact the app developer first, which can be done via email within the App. If the app doesn't work for your Android device they are obliged to agree to refund the money. If they do agree to a refund, a process between the app developer, Google and Telstra will be triggered.
If the app developer rejects your request, you can contact Telstra directly by calling the customer care number on your Telstra bill and we will discuss options to refund your money. However, you must first contact the developer and provide proof they have rejected the claim.
Telstra processes refunds from Google weekly. If a refund was requested within a week of the customer's bill cycle, it may not appear until next month's bill cycle.
If there are multiple refunds in a month (e.g. for 2 games), the TOTAL refunds for the month will appear as ONE Google Play line item on the Telstra bill. This just appears as a generic 'Google Play' refund and does not name the individual items purchased. This is different to purchases which each appear as individual line items with the name of the item purchases.
Charging for Pre-paid is real time. If the application isn't up to standard and you return it you will have the recharge credit applied back to your account but only if you return it within 15 minutes It may take up to seven days for billing data to appear on your account but it should usually appear within 24 hours. Our systems update bill data every few hours.Google's advice is that billing data may come through in up to seven days but usually this happens within one day. Purchases made less than seven days before your bill cycle start date may not appear until the next month's bill.

  • App Distribution on Google Play

We've successfully launched our magazines on Google Play, and I have some questions about distribution and subscriptions. I'm an Enterprise user and asked for help from Gold Support, but their answers to my questions were vague at best. So I'm turning to the DPS community to find out what other publishers are doing.
I understand that DPS doesn't currently support Google Play subscriptions, nor does it support push notifications. Our magazines are free, and I can't set up in-app billing for a product that costs nothing. How then do publishers of free magazines let their readers know when a new folio is ready for download from Google Play? Am I missing something?
Secondly, how do readers find your app in the Play Store? When I search for my magazines using their exact titles, I get 250 results and none of them are mine. If I search using one of main keywords in the title, they show up as Nos. 64 and 67 in the search results. How are my readers supposed to find the app? No one would have the patience to scroll through that many apps to find it.

Text push notification is something that is in the works for our native Android viewer which should help with the discovery issue you mention once a reader has installed your application. It won't be available in release 31, but hopefully we'll have it sometime in release 32.
As for the search results problem, I feel your pain. I think it gets better over time as more people download your app. "Adobe Content Viewer" didn't show up on the first several pages of results once we released the new native version. It took weeks before it started to bubble up higher in the results

  • Google Play with DPS

I have a few multi-folio with subscription apps on Apple iPad and want to branch out to test the Google Play market. Many of the in-app purchases are built at 768x1024 portrait only dimensions and I believe Google Plays dimensions are a little different. How do you handle building apps and in-app purchases in regards to the document size differences ??

I've tried out a bunch of different solutions, and the best (which is far from perfect) is to build one version of my publication at 1205x800 (for portrait, if you want dual orientation go 1205x725). This compensates for the menu bar while avoiding any major letter boxing on any 1280x800 device, which hits the current crop of popular Android tablets, as well as enabaling you to submit to the Amazon store for the Kindle Fire HD 7".
It's a pain to have to do a second rendition, but it's better than doing four or five different rendition. But also, remember to build the folio as a JPG or PNG.

  • Google Play on Tablet works on WIFI not Verizon network.

I have an Motorola Ellipsis Tablet. I am unable to use Google Player. When I open the app, I get "Background data disable. Google play store needs background data to be enabled." I hit enable and It asks me to choose either Facebook or Gmail. I choose my email account and it tries to sync and I get the message "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Everything works fine when I am on WIFI at home but when I get to work and I'm on the Verizon network it won't work. I can't use Pandora or look at video. Can someone help me figure out why it is not working on the Verizon network? Thanks.

        Hi Mollie88,
Oh my! Let's get you back to enjoying your device. Some applications depend upon background data (transferring data when not directly in use). Restricting background data may cause those apps to stop functioning unless a Wi-Fi connection is available. To uncheck Restrict background data in the Google Play application,  follow the directions in the link  http://vz.to/1f5KM7b .

  • Google Play and entitlement

We have successfully built and tested an Android app that when the test user signs on, the entitled folios display correctly with "download". We also have single issues available through Google Play and this feature works as well.
The issue we are having is when we load the app directly to our device, the sign in and entitlement works fine, but when we load the app through the Beta tester on Google Play, when the test user signs in, the entitlement does not show up, only singe copy purchases.
All the other features are working correctly.
We are using an Enterprise version of DPS
    Thanks
    Christopher Huber

Yes we are using the  custom storefront.
Our entitlement is working correctly, i have tested it without the storefront and it works fine.

  • Google play Yoga 2 11 inch

Hello I am having many issues with google play on my yoga 2. Can anyone help? 1. I cannot watch purchased movies at the google play store. Various error messages come up 'payment needed' (when I have defaintely paid for it), 'file not supported' and 'reset lisence files' (which nothing happens when I follow instuctions). As I was using IE I tried to download chrome and..... 2. I cannot download chrome. It just gets stuck on the downloading progress bar. I therefore tried downloading firefox and the same problem still occured. 3. I then went to my apps on google play. It says that I have installed Chrome along with loads of other apps. When I click on them, it prompts me install again. The drop down menu for devices only allows me to select an old tablet I once had (asus). I click install, and it says the app will be installed shortly, and it never is. I can't open any of them. Any ideas what is going on? Thank you! Hannah

  • Google play force close on open

I just got a slightly used HP touch pad and on setup realized that I needed to use Google play to download apps, after setting up my Google account and singing in insuring wifi access ......Google play opens says "server error retry" and force closes the program. Since then I have done some research factory reset the tablet, installed latest updates, force closed through app settings and erased all info for Google play reset the I connection rebooted several times, and made sure time date and location were correct. I am still experiencing the same problem with the app. If anybody has any ideas that might help me it would be highly appreciated :-)

    Hello Rockafied!
The HP TouchPad comes with webOS installed as its operating system.   Yours has been modified to add Android to it, and as such we don't officially support this type of change to the device.
That said, there is an app existing called "gapps_fixer.zip" existing in the wild.  This may or may not solve your problem.
If you are unfamiliar with hacking this device, or how CM9 or CM10 was installed on it, it may require some research on your part to learn how to fix the issue.  Visit the "Android on the TouchPad" section of webosnation.com for some insight.

  • Google Play ebook issues on ADE 2.0

A pdf e-book downloaded from Google Play does not display the table of contents, and the full-text search function does not work, when viewed on Adobe Digital Editions version 2.067275. However, when the original pdf I submitted to Google Play (I am a publisher) is viewed on ADE, the table of contents does display and the search function works. This suggests that something in Google Play's processing of the pdf disabled the search function and stripped the bookmarks, which are the basis of the table of contents. These problems do not occur in Google Play's preview copy of the ebook which is available to all.
The Google Book Team has been unable to resolve or explain the issue, and has suggested the fault may lie with ADE, perhaps with the settings. I am sceptical about this, but would appreciate advice from others who may have experienced these defects.

It's probably not a bug in ADE 2.0.  ADE 2.0 was not designed to run under
Windows Vista.  Jeff Wright has posted a couple of entries that have the
address of information that deals with ADE under Vista.  Sonce I'm now on 7
and was on XP, I didn't bookmark the post - sorry!

  • Verizon wireless billing on Samsung Tab 2 for Google Play Coins

I have a samsung tab 2 tablet. I have google play slot games on it that I play. When I try to purchase coins it give me the option of billing my verizon account, but when I try to enable it it says "sending account verification sms to mobile provider", but comes back with "an error occurred. Please try again." I have tried everything. It works on my Motorola smartphoe, but not on my tablet. Months ago I had the same game on both my phone and my tablet and I could make a purchase on my phone billing verizon and it would credit my tablet game too. But that seemed to just disappear. Anybody have any ideas.

Let's explore options to make this work for you GG3! Sounds like your text message is not going through because you are trying to verify the account with your tablet wireless number, and tablets do not get text messages to their assigned VZW number. You may want to process via your phone, but you may need to have the game on both your phone and tablet in order for it to work.
