Superdrive only recognizes certain speed DVDS?

For some reason my MBP 15" will not recognize the Imation DVD+R 8x media I am trying to use.
HOWEVER, I've successfully burned to Imation DVD+R 16x media. Is this a firmware problem?
I can't figure out why one works and the other (the slower speed) just gets ejected (and not recognized) when I use Popcorn.

Ok - I just tried this again. I manged to write Wav files to a DVD, Mac only data fornat. but verification failed. I attepted to copy a file from DVD to desktop of MBP, it got half way through copying the file and then error meesage -30 came up, could not read file. There was no problem copying same file to an old powerbook.
Is MBP capable of reading mac only formatted data discs or do we need to write in dual pc/mac format? Disc was written in Toast 7.01.

  • Superdrive only reads CD, ejects DVD

    Hi,
I have a white Macbook, which is acting really strange. It came with a Matshita superdrive, which only reads CDs, and ejects out all the DVD's.
It used to work fine like 4/5 months back, but now whenever I put in DVD, it spins it for few seconds, stops, again spins and finally decides to eject them out.
Any reasons for this? And how to solve this issue?

So I guess you were not able to get it to boot from the optical drive, by quickly inserting the Mac OS X installation disc after a restart (or start from OFF) and holding down the C key...?
It may be hardware, but I was hoping you could boot the Mac from another system (such as the one on the Mac OS X installation disc), to rule out a problem with your current system installation. You don't happen to have an external USB drive with a Mac OS X installation on it, do you? You could back up your personal data (or clone the entire hard drive volume) to an external drive, do an +Erase and Install+ option reinstallation of Mac OS X, and test the optical drive.
Before you resort to something that drastic, try on more thing... Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account (don't use Fast Users Switching). Test the optical drive from the new account. It's possible the problem is some corrupted preference file in your normal user account. If so, the drive may work in the new account.

  • Superdrive only plays commercial DVDs

I have a G4 ibook and an emac both with Superdrives that recently only recognize commercial DVDs. When inserting a blank DVD or a homemade DVD the drives try to read the disc, but invariably eject them. The homemade discs will play fine on my Intel imac and my G4 imac running 10.4.11. It seems to me that this problem started after updating to 10.5.6.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, the superdrive in the ibook has just been replaced. It had a combo drive before until the eject mechanism went kaflooey. I'm hald wondering if it just shouldn't have a superdrive in it at all. Perhaps installing it violated some secret law of the nature of my particular ibook.
Not really But you may have gotten a flaky drive. Some "new" drives are actually refurbished, and may have not been completely rebuilt.
You might consider an external drive such as the LaCie as a backup. I use it on my MBPs when making multiple DVDs since the internal one gets quite hot after burning a few in a row.
Also after installing new hardware, a PRAM reset is always called for.
Just in case it was not done, do it now

  • HT2499 I cant get my external Apple USB SuperDrive to recognize any of my dvds?

I cant get my external Apple USB SuperDrive to recognize any of my dvds. It only recognizes installation cds. Is there something I can do or is the device faulty?

Here are some troubleshooting ideas. The DVD read portion of the Superdrive may have failed. The CD uses a different reader based on what I was told by an Apple Store Genius when mine failed.

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer and Superdrive tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.

  • I have 3 consecutive movie clips that I am trying to drop into the drop zone but it only recognizes the first one and only produces the firts one in a DVD. How can I drop all three  movie clips into one drop zone

On IDVD, I have 3 consecutive movie clips that I am trying to drop into the drop zone to create a DVD but it only recognizes the first one I dropped and only produced the first one in a DVD. How can I drop all three  movie clips into one drop zone.

I have had some luck doing the following: Export each clip from imovie as a quicktime clip. Open iDVD and create a new project. Import a few stills into iDVD and then click on the button that gets created to get into the screen where the individual slides appear. Drag each quicktime into that screen and arrange in the order you want. You can then delete the stills. The button that appeared when you dropped in the stills will launch a complete show.

  • Superdrive cannot recognize blank DVD-R

I have a black MacBook that is around 6 months old. I have never had a problem with the superdrive until recently. It can recognize and read DVDs, CDs, and Blank CDs but CANNOT read blank DVD-Rs. It will spin the DVD for a while then eject it. I have tried different brands of DVDs and none work. Is this a problem with my superdrive that Apple needs to fix or can I do it?

A shot in the dark, but these aren't DVD-R DL discs, are they? The original Macbooks can't write to Dual-Layer discs. They'd say DL on the package somewhere, and cost several dollars per disc.
If that's not the issue, then yeah, I think you have a bum drive. I'd take it in while it's still under warranty.

  • Superdrive only read dvd installation

    Ok, Here is my problem.

  • DR16-B write dvd only with max. speed

My new DR 16-B want to write dvd-s only with maximum speed of the media. If l have an dvd(ex Memorex dvd-4X) my drive unit acceot to write ONLY with 4X,speed 1X,2x are not shown and so it is impossible to select.l have tested with differents Nero ,of course and with nero witch come with dvd writer.l have already change an unit ,so l am now with the second DR16-B  and the same problem .l have also update the firmware.I don't now what to do ,ask for my money back or ask for help?l choose :HELP!   My  PC :OS winxp pro,Sp 2, MB intel i915PBL- Grantsdale,Cpu P4 3000Mhz fsb 800 1Mb cache- Prescot, 2x512 Mb ram 533 Kingmax, radeon x600  128 mb PCI,sound on board Realtek, 1Hdd sata 120 gb 7200 Seagate,2 hdd RAID sata 120 gb 7200 Seagate

Same problem here...... DR16 B2, latest update installed, using Infosmart DVD's
I have burnt about 200 using my Liteon burner at 2x speed but this new one will only burn them at 4x which my DVD player will not read
Using the same DVD media, the same PC, the same DVD player only thing that has changed is installing DR16.
also using the latest Nero not the OEM, there is an addon from Nero called DynWrSpeedOFF which will change your register to allow 2x speed but this bug is in the firmware of the drive
The other problem I am having is the speed of the write...says it is writing at 4x but take about twice as long as my 2x writer, like watching paint dry.
it is also making 60% coaster after about 98% write completed, my Liteon has at max spoilt 0.1%.
you get what you pay for, take them back and pay an extra 10% to get a good DVD writer.

  • TS1387 I am importing CD's into iTunes.  There were 3 different selection for the CD I put in and I accidently selected the wrong one, Now how do I change it?  It seems to only recognize it as the wrong CD now.

I am importing CD's into iTunes.  The CD that I put in had the option of 3 different CD's and I accidentally chose the wrong CD name.  Is there a way to change it?  It now seems to only recognize that CD as the wrong one.

    Trevor,
When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

  • Superdrive won't play burned DVDs

So now my SuperDrive won't play DVDs that were burned by my superdrive. It will play store bought DVDs, however its hit or miss with the burned DVDs, every once in a while it will recognize a burned DVD, but most of the time you can hear it trying to read the disc and then just ejects it...these are DVDs that I burned on this computer. What gives, I would think that it should be able to play burned DVDs, especially when they were burned using the same drive. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Is it me or does it seem like the quality of Apple Products has gone down over the years. I rarely had any issues with my older Apple Laptops, however, it seems like I'm constantly on this discussion trying to solve some sort of problem with this one. Thought I was upgrading when I bought this 17" PB, well I got a faster laptop, along with a bunch of headaches trying to fix it...somebody please give me some answers.

    The problem is 2 fold.
You must use good quality Media. Not bargin basement cheap media. This more than any other thing is a huge problem. I find that using 16X DVD-R Media. This is the most recognised of all media for player, and computer recognition.
Most users make there biggest mistake by buying cheap media and then can't fiqure out why they have a problem.
Next It is a Software problem. Apple's media can sometimes be a problem to learn and use and is very limited as to it's capability.
I find that if you plan on doing a lot of burning you need to have a top of the line software.
    http://www.roxio.com/
This software comes with several features, This software will burn
    Video TS
    Audio
    Data
And most importantly has an automatic compression feature, that will compress Video TS folders that are larger than 4.7gb to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc.
If you plan to do dvd burning here are 3 links that will not only back up what I have stated above, but gives all users a ton of important information.

  • Superdrive only recognized as Combo drive

I installed an HP 300n DVD+RW drive in my Power Mac G4, running Mac OS 10.5.6. Reading CDs/DVDs works fine as well as burning CDs. Somehow, part of OS X is only recognizing it as a Combo drive. System profiler recognizes it as a fully compatible Superdrive as seen in this picture: http://i42.tinypic.com/wa6pg2.png
The rest of the system thinks it is a combo drive as seen here: http://i40.tinypic.com/f359uu.png
When I insert a DVD-R, nothing happens. The Finder presents no dialog, it does not show up on the desktop, and Disk Utility does not realize that anything was inserted. Nothing happens differently than if I closed the drive with no disc in.
Why is it only working as a combo drive?
EDIT: Is it possible that the drive is +R only?
Message was edited by: Hippy Dippy Hippo

I noticed that all the Superdrive macs I have contain DVD+/-RW drives. I do not think any macs were shipped with DVD+RW drives ever. Therefore, the eject menu is confused and calls it a Combo drive. Different companies have different definitions of "combo" drives. The Compaq I pulled this from actually called it a Combo drive on the sticker on the front of the PC, despite having the ability to burn both DVD+RW and CD-RW discs. I think that the fact that it was DVD+RW drive confused the mac into thinking it was a "Combo" drive, though just in that eject menu.
The real problem was that I was trying DVD-R discs when I should have been using DVD+R. As long as I remember to use DVD+R rather than -R, then all will be well.

  • My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down"

My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down" and restart while holding down the mouse button. Anyone have any remedies?

I ran into a similar (identical?) problem.  I inserted a DVD-R and my imac would not recognize it.  The only way to eject was to do a restart.  I tried some of the SMC reset stuff.  That didn't work.  I came across another thread on macrumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336501)
    that solved my problem.
I have an external Western Digital Passport drive that I use for timecapsule.  It turns out
there are two files that WD adds to the /Library/LaunchDaemons that interferes with the
SuperDrive.  I removed the WD files from the LaunchDaemons directory and everything works fine
now.  Again, refer to the macrumors thread for more details.
The files I removed from the LaunchDaemons directory were:
    com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist
    com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist
..yes I had installed the WD backup software to see if I liked it....I did not, but didn't realize this files would cause a conflict with the SuperDrive.

  • Can only insert 1 cd/dvd between sleeps.

My superdrive can only accept one cd/dvd during each session. After I eject the first cd/dvd, it will immediately eject any new media as soon as its inserted, even if its the same cd/dvd. The only way around this at the moment is to sleep the mac and wake it up. Then I can insert a new cd.
Has anyone encountered this problem before and found a solution to it? I have searched the forums and havent found this issue before.

    Hi Gregor,
Yes I had the same provblem and thought I was going mad. I even thought I would have to ring apple customer care.
Last time I rang them they answered within the first two rings, so I hung up, I thought I had the wrong number.
Thanks for the heads up this has solved my problem.
