[systemd] rc.d-style output when starting/stopping daemons
Hi everyone,
since polkit is deprecated by Arch Linux and many packages depends on systemd-logind instead, I have to switch to systemd. But I really miss rc.d-style output! Just like this:
# rc.d restart foobar
:: Stopping foobar... [ DONE ]
:: Starting foobar... [ DONE ]
netcfg also uses this "Arch style":
# netcfg -r foobar
:: foobar down [ DONE ]
:: foobar up [ DONE ]
Removing 'quiet' from kernel parameters will output simliar messages on boot. But when I log into X and run 'sudo systemctl restart foobar.service' or other commands in a Terminal Emulator, I cannot see any output. Neither the pretty 'Arch style' output nor normal 'ugly' black-and-white outputs.
I tried to modify /etc/systemd/system.conf, making:
DefaultStandardOutput=journal+console
DefaultStandardError=inherit+console
..., and reboot the system. But I still cannot get output when running 'sudo systemctl restart foobar.service'.
Can anyone help me getting back rc.d-style / Arch style output when starting/stopping daemons with systemctl? I really miss them!
BTW, I've tried 'sudo systemctl restart' with dnsmasq.service, httpd.service, mysqld.service, etc. None of them outputs...
Thanks in advance.

I think it only outputs a message on failure.
Or you could try:

Resource not release when starting/stopping the deployed application
I am testing to deploy an standard web application on Weblogic 11gR1 at Windows XP. It is running and everything is working fine. But I noticed below situation which concersns about the release of resouce during stop and start deployed application by using Admin Server Console:
After the deployed application starting running in Weblogic, I go to Admin Server Console to select the deployed application at deployment section and click "stop\When work complete". It looks like that the deployed application was stopped and its state went to "Prepared". Then I start it again by click "Start\Servicing all requests". It started correctly. If I tried multiple times of "Start \ Stop" operations on this deployed application, then eventurally, I got "output memory" exception and Weblogic died. I wached the memory usage of Weblogic, when applying multiple times of 'start / stop' operation on an deployed application, the memory usage of weblogic continuese to grow and until "output memory" exception occurs.
Is it normal? What might be wrong when configuring weblogc? or somethng wrong for deployed application?
Anybody can provide any help would be great appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
JimHi Mithun,
Thanks for your reply! If stopping the deployment need some time to finish, So, admin console of weblogic should disable ( grey out ) its starting button while the related deployed application is still shutting down. After the deployed application were stopped completely, then enable the starting button again to avoid the issue.
I just feel a little bit strange for the admin console of Weblogic to behavior on start / stop deployed application.
Thanks,

Redirecting output when starting the server as Service
Hi,
I was wondering if there is any way to redirect the error to a log file if the
weblogic server has been started as Service. We are getting some crashes and we
are not sure what exactly the issue is. We have tried running it on the command
line and we have been able to capture some info but if there is a way to do the
same when starting it as service,it would be great
thanks
Sushilwls8.1 sp3:
To redirect the output to log files you must redirsct standard out and standard error to a file.
This can be done by following steps:
1. Create a backup copy of the WL_HOME\server\bin\installSvc.cmd master script.
2. In a text editor, open the WL_HOME\server\bin\installSvc.cmd master script.
3. In installSvc.cmd, the last command in the script invokes the beasvc utility. At the end of the beasvc command, append the following command option:
-log:"pathname "
where pathname is a fully qualified path and filename of the file that you want to store the server's standard out and standard error messages.
The modified beasvc command will resemble the following command:
"%WL_HOME%\server\bin\beasvc" -install
-svcname:"%DOMAIN_NAME%_%SERVER_NAME%"
-javahome:"%JAVA_HOME%" -execdir:"%USERDOMAIN_HOME%"
-extrapath:"%WL_HOME%\server\bin" -password:"%WLS_PW%"
-cmdline:%CMDLINE%
-log:"d:\bea\user_projects\domains\myWLSdomain\myWLSserver-stdout.txt"
4. By default, every 24 hours the Windows service archives messages to a file named pathname-yyyy_mm_dd-hh_mm_ss. New messages collect in the file that you specified in the previous step.
For information on changing the default behavior, see Changing the Default Rotation Criteria <http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/adminguide/winservice.html>.
After you install the service and restart the Windows host, to view the messages that the server writes to standard out or standard error, do one of the following:
§ Make a copy of the file that you specified and view the copy. The Windows file system cannot write to files that are currently opened.
§ To view the messages as they are being printed to the file, open a command prompt and, using a DOS utility that supports the tail command, enter tail -f stdout-filename. -

[Solved] MPD won't play when started via systemd
When I try to play from mpd (after starting it from systemd with "systemctl start mpd"), nothing happens. In ncmpcpp, when I press play, it quickly shows play and then immediately goes to "paused". When I start MPD normally from the command line (just by running "mpd"), it works fine, but for some reason, some conflict is being caused by systemd.
Is there anywhere I should start to look? I don't really know how to troubleshoot it, as I don't know how to make it log without running it from the command line.
EDIT: I set up systemd --user and wrote a service for it. It seems that mpd was running as root and caused some permissions issues.

Output ends up in the journal by default.
When starting "normally", do you also start mpd as root (since there is no "--user" in your systemctl call)?
I just checked and it is running as root, however, when I do
systemctl --user enable mpd
I get:

Hi
Creating an application to analyze .dmp files - all working well except this odd issue
If I open command prompt and enter this command:-
kd -z C:\Windows\MiniDump\042414-24632-01.dmp -c "!analyze -v"
Then it works and shows me all the output I need (shown at bottom of post)
If I run same command in VB.net using following code - then it doesn't give the same output - the bits I need at the end created by the !analyze -v switch don't appear
Any ideas why it is not seeing the switch correctly - setting a breakpoint and checking contents of startinfo seems to be showing correct cmd line i.e. "kd -z C:\windows\minidump\042414-24632-01.dmp -c "!analyze –v;q""
Dim myprocess As New Process()
myprocess.StartInfo.FileName = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Debuggers\x86\kd"
myprocess.StartInfo.Arguments = "-z C:\windows\minidump\042414-24632-01.dmp -c ""!analyze –v;q"""
myprocess.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = False
myprocess.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = True
myprocess.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = True
myprocess.Start()
TextBox1.AppendText(myprocess.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd())
Output when run from cmd prompt:-
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Debuggers\x86>kd -z C:\Windows\MiniDump\042414-24632-01.dmp -c "!analyze -v;q"

Darren RoseTry it by opening the Cmd prompt as the actual process and passing the Filename and its arguments as the arguments of the Cmd process. If you notice there is a "-C" before the Filename and Arguments in this example. The "-C"
tells the cmd to execute the commands and then close itself. You can also use a "-K" which tells the cmd to execute the commands and keep itself open. Being you are not showing the cmd window you don`t want to keep it opened because the
user can`t close it so, that is why i used "-C".
I don`t have the program so, you can just experiment to see what it does. Maybe you should try using "-K" and show the cmd window by commenting out the CreateNoWindow line so you can see what is in the cmd window while testing.
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim filepath As String = """C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Debuggers\x86\kd"""
Dim args As String = " -z C:\windows\minidump\042414-24632-01.dmp -c ""!analyze –v;q"""
Dim p As New Process
With p.StartInfo
.FileName = "cmd.exe"
.Arguments = "-c " & filepath & args
.UseShellExecute = False
.CreateNoWindow = True
.RedirectStandardOutput = True
End With
p.Start()
TextBox1.Text = p.StandardOutput.ReadToEnd
End Sub
If you say it can`t be done then i`ll try it -

Why is my G5 is stopping on the grey+apple logo screen when starting up?
My G5 is stopping on the grey+apple logo screen when starting up and fans run faster than usual after a couple minutes. I have read many of the posts related here, but it seems none are exactly what I am experiencing. Here is what I have done:
+Disconnected all peripheral devices (except for keyboard and mouse).
+Unplugged power cord and plugged back in.
+Unplugged ethernet cable.
+Removed added memory.
+Reset the SMU button on the logic board.
+Reset the PRAM by pressing Command-Option-P-R keys. It makes its second start up chime but I still get the grey screen.
+After opening the disc door with a paper clip, started up while pressing "C" with Hardware Test CD which found no problems.
+However, also started up with Systemworks disc and ran Disc Doctor, but I get an "unexpected problem, Error found: disk error" while "Checking Directories: Catalog Structure". When trying to run Speed Disc, my hard drive doesn't even show up in the window to select it. Nor does it show up in Disk Viewer.
I have not tried to start up from the original Mac Startup or installation disc that came with the computer. I am not at my G5 right now (having to use the internet at work). If I start up with that disc, will I loose any work (if I haven't already) that I haven't backed up?
Also, the G5 manual suggests replacing the lithium battery inside the tower if I am having problems starting up. I have not read to do this anywhere else except in the manual. It mentions having problems with the date and time which I haven't so I doubt it's the battery.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Tony
G5 Power Mac Mac OS X (10.0.x)First and foremost you should never use Norton Utilities Disk Doctor or Speed Disk. They will corrupt your hard drive. NUM is not compatible with modern Macs and is no longer supported by Symantec. I highly recommend you uninstall it. You will find instructions here.
You should do the following:
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu . After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this does not fix the problem, then it's possible your system files have been damaged in which case you may need to reinstall OS X. You can do this by an Archive and Install which does not require erasing the hard drive. However, the hard drive must be verified as OK per the preceeding intructions. -
I can browse the web but when I go to play video or you tube it will start stop over and over almost like it is buffering could this be the router all other non iPad devices work
How are you trying to play them, in the iTunes store or the Music and Videos apps ? Downloaded and synced music and videos should be in the Music and Videos apps, and you can stop content that is only in the cloud from showing in them via Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music and Videos 'off' (under the 'show all' heading).
If you don't have your music and films/TV shows in those two apps then you should be able to download them into those apps via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app. -

When starting up, Apple logo is present with loading bar underneath. No spinning wheel. After aprox 1 min the loading bar stops half way and shuts down completely. Any advice appreciated.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011") and which version of OS X are you running?
You may want to try resetting your SMC -> Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
If no joy there, call back with th requested information.

RAC hangs when starting or stopping 2nd instance of 2 node RAC
Has anyone seen the problem with all transactions and/or logins hanging when starting or stopping the 2nd node of a 2 node RAC database. When I shut down the 2nd instance using srvctl I occasionally get errors and long delays connecting. On our larger database with instances having a very large SGAs, trying to connect you sometimes get ORA-12537 or ORA-01033. Users experience a very long hang before getting the errors. These instances have very large SGAs of about 30GB on each node.
In the log of the first instance we see messages like the following for quite a while.
Global Resource Directory frozen
Communication channels reestablished
Master broadcasted resource hash value bitmaps
Non-local Process blocks cleaned out

Thanks in advance.I have tested with only one node and starting and stopping is much faster without any cache fusion traffic. The application is not RAC aware, it was written without regard for RAC. As you say there may be some accessing of the same block by all nodes causing RAC to remaster blocks when a node is shut down.
My concern is the length of time users are afftected when I am starting a node that has been offline for a while. With the large SGA I have, it appears users are affected adversely for several minutes, in affect causing an outage which we are trying to avoid by using RAC. -
Using the migration assistant I copied my users from an old MAC (2007) to a brand new on. After a few attempts and software updates this worked. For Itunes and mail for example all data was available. On starting my Iphoto however there was a problem. When starting there is the message that the library, to be able to work with the new Iphoto Version, needs to be updated. In the process of doing this the programm seems to get stuck after 40 % of progress and even after 24 hours does not continue. I have tried to use the I-Photo First aid, but before starting any of the steps it wants to re-allign the old library to the new Iphoto version ans subsequently get's stuck on the same spot again !! Is there any advice you could give ?
Thanks,
JohnI have tha same problem.
iPhoto asks for updating, then it shows a bar about the conversion in progress, then it shows that it is working on faces library and then the circle spot stop to turn on faces library and starts in the middles of iPhoto window.
After three days nothing changed!
Any help?
