T420 Hinges second replacement in 1.5 years?

My T420 Hinges are beginning to wobble again and not adequately support the screen. Basically any minor bump to the computer moves the screen back and forth. This makes it very difficult to use the machine in a car, bus, airplane, or on any surface other than a desk. I've owned the computer for about 1.5yrs and this would be the second time I would have the hinges replaced under warranty. When the machine was new and after the last replacement it did not exhibit these symptoms.
Is this normal for a T420?
Is there anything I can do to make the hinges last longer? I plan on keeping this machine for at least another 2.5 years, and I hate the idea of needing to replace the hinges every six to seven months.
Thanks!

my 16 months old T420 hinge is still okay. If you are going through a pair of hinge every 8 months that is not good.

    Hi herbie13!
It sounds like you will still want to link your iPad and computer, but you want to prevent the iPad from syncing information from your computer to your iPad. I have an article here for you that can help tell you how to set this up:
    iOS: Syncing with iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386
You will want to follow the steps here to set up the iPad for syncing, but when it comes time to sync, you'll just want to make sure that the boxes for syncing the multitude of items that you can sync remain unchecked so that none of that information gets synced into the iPad.
Another note: your second Apple ID will not be able to access the apps, music, movies, tv shows, etc., that you have purchased under your primary Apple ID. Even though it seems that the secondary Apple ID still has access to those items, that is just because you are viewing your second Apple ID through the iTunes Store section on your computer and you have those items saved locally on your computer. You will need to repurchase and download all of the content that you wish to use again on your second Apple ID, if that is what you wish to solely use on this iPad.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Does a replacement handset have a years warranty or does it fall under the original?

My iPhone 5 was replaced less than a year ago, does the new handset have a years warranty or is it from the original date of purchase?

A replacement has whatever warranty was remaining on the original device or 90 days, whichever is longer. If your current iPhone is beyond both of those periods, then it's no longer in warranty. If the battery has failed, Apple will replace it. See the section on battery replacement here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
Of course you can always talk to the technician at the Apple Store about the situation. Whether they can do anything for you I can't say, but it costs nothing to ask.

  • G7-2340dx Screen / Hinge / Shell replacement

I got my G7 a little over a year ago with income taxes. Fast forward to the end of the warranty, and right before Warranty expired, I had to replace the battery, and then the HDD, because of issues. Now, just out of warranty (and me having to get a tech support plan because of other issues), my screen is broken.
Now, I've found someone who can replace it for me, the problem is getting the parts. I've looked on the HP Part Surfer, and the parts I need are listed, but they aren't available for me to click on them to purchase.
    The broken bits:
Right side plastic hinge cover. It broke last night, and I've no clue how. I don't drop, or bang the laptop around, but it broke. I woke up this morning, and popped it back into place, because it was just kinda....half-way sticking up, and I didn't think anything of it. When I opened my computer this evening, however, the screen was busted, and it has to be because of the broken hinge area.
If I'm going to get the screen replaced, I don't want it to just break again, which means I need to replace the shell / hinge cover. If I cannot get these parts, I can't do it. Anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on them?

  • 3 cracks in 3 years replaced with a 3 year warranty!!!

    Dear Ms./Sir,
I am a university student and in 2007 I have bought my very first laptop ever, a white Macbook. I love my laptop. It's fast, it's convenient. The design is slick and thin, fits anywhere and it's light. However, since I bought it I realized that regular Microsoft laptops have sturdy cases but their software falls apart. In the case of a MacBook, excellent software but the case falls apart. This is ridiculous. I am a big fan of Apple products and have bought many as presents as well in the past. I avidly recommended and still am to friends and family. However with the case cracking constantly and in constant need of replacement I am definitely over thinking my loyalty to Apple in the future.
Mid 2008 I notice the first crack on the right side of the board. Having a 3 year warranty through Apple Care I was able to replace it at no cost. I hoped that it wouldn't happen again and made sure that I used it lightly and very carefully to avoid another crack. Early 2009 another crack, same place. Replaced it again at no cost. This time I decided not to even take it to school anymore and was really really careful with it. November 2009, not even a year later another crack in the SAME spot. This is ridiculous. 3 cracks in 3 years. My warranty ends in January next year. I don't have the money to spent on replacement every time this happens after my warranty expires.
So I would like to know what can Apple do for a loyal fan like me?
I really don’t want the cracking to keep happening, since I don’t have the money to keep repairing it.
    Regards,
    Dorothea

As Templeton said, you will not get a response from Apple here. We're all just fellow users.
I'd suggest calling Apple tech support and asking to speak with Customer Relations. When you get a CR representative on the line, calmly explain the situation and express your concerns about yet another case failure should they just replace the case yet again. I can't make any sort of promises - again, I don't work for Apple so I can't speak for them - but the CR representative may be able to work out something, ideally a replacement of the unit with a new model of MacBook.
    Good luck.

  • Macbook pro freezes every few seconds. replaced the HDD, ram, logic board. to no avail. any ideas?

i have a late 2008 macbook pro. it freezes-up (more like slows down) for just a moment every 5 seconds or so. the problem has been there since i originally purchased it, but due to school, i never got around to fixing it til now. i've taken it in to apple several times (6 or 7). this last time i was there, they replaced the logic board, harddrive, and ram, and even the screen (for hot spots, unrelated). but no success. it hasn't gotten any better at all, and now, in addition to all that, the screen blacks out occasionally too.
does anyone have any idea what's happening here? where else could the problem be?

  • Can I get my phone replaced with a 1 Year Warranty?

I bought a HTC phone from Best Buy in July 2011 and it came with an extra piece that no longer works. I have an 1 year warranty and I was wondering if I could get the piece replaced.

What kind of piece is this?
Either way if you only have the manufacturer's one year warranty, you would have to contact the manufacturer.

  • Replacing phone ruin 2 year phone ugrade?

My phone hasn't been charging. The charger port is all messed up. If i were to replace the phone since it's still under warranty would that mess with my 2 year phone upgrade? Would it make me wait another two years for an upgrade?

    No.
However if you don't have extended warranty after the first year the phone warranty is up. You would have to pay for another phone to use until you can use your upgrade at 24 months.
You can put any like device on that line until your eligible for your phone subsidy.
    Good Luck

  • Second replacement unit automatically shuts down and never opened again. can i asked for a brand new replacement since it'll be my third replacement?

Last September 13, 2011 I purchased an Iphone 4. I was told that it's warranty is good for 1 year. On may 13 2012, the sleep/wake button of my iphone malfunctioned. I immediately brought it to store where i bought the unit. They sent it to Singapore for service. 10 days after, on May 23, 2012, I received a text message from them telling me that my "replacement unit is available for pick up". Meaning that my old unit was replaced. When the customer representative and I checked the replacement unit issued to me, we saw deep scratches in front and back of the unit. I returned the unit to them because of the deep scratches. They told me that they'll return it to Singapore and will make a new report. Comes June 12, 2012 when i received a message again from them saying that my replacement unit is again available for pick up. the customer service representative and I checked the unit again for scratches. Finally the unit is clean. On June 23, 2012, the replacement unit issued to me automatically shuts down for 8 times. i quickly brought it to the store. Even their security saw the problem of my iphone (because he helped me troubleshoot it first). on the last time we tried opening it, it hanged and didn't continue to open. So for the third time, the unit is again subject for check up to see if it is under warranty. my concern is, apple is very vocal about their warranty which is "replacement".. Is there anything I can do to ask for a good unit from apple since this matter is a big inconvenience for me where in i have to provide myself another phone where i can use my number. and the worry that i might get another bad replacement unit.

Of course you can ask... asking is always an option.  Regardless, it is always up to Apple as to whether the device is replaced with service units or new.

  • Broken hinge - Need replacement rod??

    Hi,
I dropped my macbook yesterday and the left hinge came loose.
After some research I found this guide at ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Core-2-Duo/Left-Hinge-Mount/116/25/
but after taking by macbook apart it was not this part of the hinge that had broken.
what I did find however is that there is a rod that is secured beneath the left hinge mount, that goes into the display hinge tube. When I remove the rod I find it only extends into the display tube about an inch., ie it doesnt run the length of the display tube and connect with the right hand hinge mount. I therefore suspect the rod is broken and that I need to replace it.
Can anyone confirm that this is correct and where i can get the replacement part. It would also be useful if anyone knows where to find an exploded parts diagram of this assembly,
    Thanks in advance,
    Jon.

Sorry to hear your phone is out of commission, giuntamom.  Unfortunately, Verizon does not set the policy when it comes to "upgrading" and iPhones - Apple does, and there are no early upgrades.  If you have another device you can activate in the interim, that would be the simplest solution.  When you become eligible, get the iPhone5.  That's still 4 months prior to your contract end, and you may be able to get it done a few days earlier, just not a whole month.
If you go to another carrier, and want to keep your number, there will be an ETF for the final months of your contract with Verizon.  Even if you get a new number with the new carrier, you will either pay an ETF to cancel the contract with Verizon, or pay for service for the remaining months of your contract.
Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

  • First & Second BBP terms appearing on Year End Bill  instead of first only

    Hi All,
During running of EA19 the u2018oldu2019 BBP plan gets closed while a new one is being created. The amount to be paid on the invoice is the sum of costs of the billing period + BBP term. Normally only 1 BBP term is present on the invoice.
    Issue:
However, I am having cases where all the BP's have the 1st 2 terms of the BBP included on the invoice. (I suspect this has something to do with the timing of invoicing)
    Example:
I have a few Business partners where I am invoicing them through EA19. All of them have a yearly Budget Billing Plan active till say 20.01.2011.
The new BBPlan has start date as 21.01.2011 say and due date of 1 st term as 28.02.2011, due date of 2nd term 28.03.2011 and so on.
When I invoice today (20.01.2011) and I give booking date and posting date as 01.02.2011 (< 12.02.2011) then only 1st term is picked (normal scenario) i.e. the one with  due date 28.02.2011
When I invoice today and I give booking date and posting date as 15.02.2011 ( > or = 12.02.2011) then only 2 terms are picked [weird scenario] in EA19 i.e. the ones with due date 28.02.2011 and 28.03.2011.
This has something to do with the posting date/ document date that we give while invoicing through EA19. I want to know where and how this setting is maintained like, if posting date is X (or < X) days from today, then pick only first term of BBP else pick first two terms of BBP.
    Thanks in advance.
    Please let me know.

  • My niece broke my ipad mini, it is free for a replacement? Under 1 year warranty?

Please help me. I dont know what to do?

Apple does not repair iPads, but will replace the entire iPad for a flat fee. If you have AppleCare+ on the iPad, the cost will be relatively minimal; $49 in the US. Otherwise, see the Service Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/service/faq/
There are independent iPad repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipad repair".  You can also look for parts and instructions and do the repair yourself. Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPad serviced by an unauthorized shop or perform your own repair, you will get no further support from Apple.
    Regards.

  • Second replacement 3G (3.1.3) Still got camera problems.

I was having problems with the photos on my replacement 3G,(3.1.3) they were very blurred. Took it back & they replaced it again however i find the same problem again. Photos on camera-roll are ok, not blurred, but if i email myself a photo from camera-roll then drag it into iPhot it's VERY blurred.
However, once i plug in iPhone to sync in iTunes the photos are still blurred until i put them in one of my folders(Mo & family) then they are fine & can be emailed with no blurring at all?
    My son found this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1802430&start=0&tstart=0
but this was way back in 2008-2009 only difference is the photos in my camera-roll are NOT blurred like the people on that discussion! I'm finding it very confusing & strange...
Anyone got any idea as to what's going on please?
For now i just wont be sending any photos from my iPhone...will send from iPhoto

Photos sent via email or MMS from the iPhone are sent at a lower resolution/size.
With firmware update 4.0, there is a size option provided for a photo or photos to be sent via email - small, medium, large, full or original size.
If you are using the Share function with a selected photo or photos to be emailed, try using the copy function for the selected photo or photos instead followed by pasting the copied photos in the email. When using copy/paste for the photos instead of the share function, the photo or photos will be sent as full resolution.

  • IPhone 5 - rattling phone, second replacement coming!

hi guys. i can see this is a common issue. i have heard a few different reasons about why this is happening. either it's the autofocus mechanism or the vibrate motor.
whatever the reason, this should not be happening on a £600 piece of hardware. the quality control at apple is not what it used to be and when they are rushing to manufacture millions of devices to tight deadlines in china then this is a problem that was going to happen sooner or later.
i am of the opinion that this is a fault with possibly more than 50% of all iphones manufactured to date and apple needs to do a product recall. it seems that they have told staff to not admit this as a fault to try and avoid just that.
i got a replacement and it arrived, the rattle was slightly less noticable but definitely still there. i just ordered another replacement and will continue to keep doing so until i get a device that doesn't rattle.
before anyone says that this is normal and it is SUPPOSED to rattle, that is BS. i have been to the apple store in brighton and tried the display models and even tried a few they had in the back after speaking with a staff member. out of the 12 phones i went through, 2 didnt rattle AT ALL.
Now you tell me if that is normal and people should just put up with the substandard product that apple has churned out this time. I say NO, and the more people that actually make a stand, the quicker apple will be forced to spend some of their $600B on fixing this issue.

This discussion has been helpful, thanks. I do need clarity - is this something that will be replaced under warranty??? I am experiencing a rattle sound each time I am ON a call. It sounds like the speaker is vibrating. I just got this new iphone last week, and I have been using a lifeproof case. No, it is not a notification going off, I know the difference. It is a noise that is unacceptable though, very distracting during my business calls.
I got the phone from Sprint. Does anyone know if I can just take back to them for a new one or what that process likely entails??
    Thanks for your help.
