Thermocouple wiring with a Voltage Divider

Hello,
I am trying to measure the temperature through a K-type thermocouple by making a voltage divider connection. As you can see in the picture attached, I am wiring a resistor ( 10 kOhm) with the pins of the thermocouple to the DAQ (NI-6009).
The problem that I am facing is when running this with LabVIEW. I am attaching a file I created in order to control a heating element depending upon the temperature measurement. The result I get is -360.425 C which totally makes no sense, and makes me wonder what is wrong with either the .vi file or the wiring (I have checked the polarity of both the resistor and the thermocouple and that part should be solved already).
I am attaching a picture of the result since to obtain something everything needs to be wired first.

It is hard to see how you have the voltage divider connected in the picture.  Can you post an image of the schematic?
I never heard of anyone uisng a voltage divider on the output of a thermocouple. The voltage is quite small and dividing it makes little sense.
Next, the USB-6009 is marginally useful for measuring the output of a thermocouple.  The resolution is about 1 degree.
Your formula for converting voltage to temperature is suspect.  I do not have any hardware so I just generated an array of values from zero to 0.05. This results in temperatures on the chart of -97 to -87 degrees.  For a Type K thermocouple 0 to 50 mV should represent temperatures from 0 to 1232 C.

  • USB-6211 is wreaking havoc with a voltage divider

    Hi all,
    I'm hoping that somene here might have a new idea, because I'm completely out. I'm trying to use a UBS-6211 board to measure the voltage output from the power source in a system I have set up. The voltage ranges from 0V to 55V, so I've got it hooked up to a voltage divider in parallel to the rest of the system, as shown in the Circuit file. This seems to work fine, as judged by a voltmeter, as long as the board isn't connected. Once the board is connected, all of the readings get strange. The attached Plots file shows the behavior of the system, both according to the voltmeter (DMM) reading the voltage across the voltage divider and LABView (Comp).
    The voltmeter makes it look like there's a diode or something of that sort that switches on and changes the impediance of the system, but the read in voltages are such a mess that I really don't know. I've tried a bunch of different combinations of resistors, and it seems that they don't much matter unless they're exteremly large or small, which is expected. One other thing to know is that there is almost no current drawn by the system, about .2 mA, until the elbow, at which point the current drawn steadily increases. 
    If anyone has suggestions or would like more information, I'd be glad to hear from you.

    Where are the grounds connected? You do not show the USB6211 ground.  The specification for the device requires that all input voltages be within +/-10.4 V of AI GND.  AI GND is usually connected to th eUSB ground which in turn is connected to the computer ground.
    If the voltage goes outside the specified limits, some non-linear behavior may occur.

    We're currently using a NI-9213 thermocouple device with our cDAQ 9178 chassis.  We need to take temperature measurements on pcb components such as voltage regulators and cathodes of diodes, thus would to use our 9213.  However, we've noticed that input volage on the 9213 device is +/-78mV.   Are there any options or methods to use the 9213 with thermcouples that possible be attached to components that may be as high as +25vdc??  Thanks for any ideas!

    Use isolated thermocouples.  They tend to be bulkier and have slower response times, but might be an option.  Omega has 24 AWG thermocouples with PFA insulation rated to 250 C for example.  They also have many other styles.

    How do I take a thermocouple reading with a pci6025E? I have seen some postings with scxi-1112 modules which I do not have. I need advice from the ground up. Do I need external circuitry, can I just wire both leads of the thermocouple to Ain0 differential pins, what vis are necessary in the actual programming... If there is an example program or anything else that might seem relavent? I appreciate any help.

    This is most probably a result of multiple factor that make the measurement imperfect:
    - You're not using signal conditioning, so your resolution is definitely very reduced. Any temperature drift in the board could cause a big difference in the reading. I recommend you run your vi for approximately half an hour, unplug the accessory and perform a self calibration. This will have the board at the operational temperature you're expecting and will give you the best results.
    -I personally would recommend using a different sensor type (RTD or Thermistor) as the CJC source, in order to obtain an accurate measurement, otherwise you have a bit of a "chicken and egg" problem, because you're using thermocouple 2 as the CJC for thermocouple 1, but what are you using as the CJC source of thermocouple 2?
    - Are both your thermocouples of the same type and manufacturer? Due to the nature of the thermocouple itself, you can find slight variations between thermocouples from different vendors, due to the purity of the metals used. While this would usually be almost impossible to detect, it might be driving your voltage just enough to be in the next detectable voltage step (again, due to the reduced resolution).
    - I've worked with temperature sensors for a while, and I'd still recommend that you try some sort of signal conditioning in order to increase your accuracy. Even a small amplifier and a passive lowpass filter will do great. I know you said you don't have SCXI, but if you want some lower cost ready to use applications you might consider looking at the SCC Carriers and modules we have.

    Do you have it wired like the attached file?  Using my schematic, you can calculate the current through the pot based on the desired voltage drop across the pot
    4V / 10Kohm = 0.0004 A
    From Kirchhoff's current law, we know the same current will flow through the circuit so now we can calculate the lower leg of the divider based on the current and the desired voltage drop across the resistor
    1V /  0.0004 A = 2.5K Ohm
    My schematic keeps the current through the circuit constant so the voltage divider should never change.  Assuming a linear pot, you will get a linear voltage swing as measured at the wiper.  If you wired the pot a different way, then more then likely, you are changing the total resistance from 5V to ground which would effect the current which would effect the voltages.

  • Problem with CPU Voltage

    I build new PC with:
    i5-760
    Noctua NH-D14
    MSI P55-GD65
    G.Skill 2x2GB CL7 ECO
    Antec TruePower New 750W TP-750
    TwinTech GF 9600GT
    I have problem with CPU voltage as even when I set it for example to 1.201v in bios, under load it overshot to 1.256-1268. The best is when I oc`ed cpu to 4GHZ and set voltage in bios for 1.30v it overshot for 1.45v+! Not to mention that temps are skyhigh from that. It doesn`t matter if I try to put BIOS Vcore on 1.1v on stock because under load it still rise to 1.16. I turned off all eist, c-state, turbo boost, phase led and switch phase, set vdrop to low and still something is wrong here. I updated the bios under dos from USB stick to newest 1.9 version in order to update CPU micro code without error and it not helped. I want to know is that even possible to fix or should I RMA MB or CPU.
    Minor problem is with sysfans as they power on for a second and turn off instantly to start working again when I see list on devices in post. After rebot when my monitor is switched off it takes something like 5 sec to power monitor on and another 5 to show bios, is that normal?

    I have similar issues, it's hard to tell which measurement is the most accurate, there are 2 different measurements in the control center that don't match up with the figures set in the bios.  The only way to be sure would be to get an expensive accurate multimeter but If you're only interested in running a stable overclocked computer without knowing the exact figures then get the computer running stable and lower the voltages until it starts to become unstable with prime95,
    Or you could work the other way round, set the voltages so it boots but doesn't run prime95 for long, then raise the vcore and vtt one at a time until your happy with the length of time prime95 runs without errors.  I'd be happy with 24 hours, I seem to remember errors creeping in at around the 9 hour mark on the setting below what I have it set to now.

    I would like to know if I can configure a voltage divider without having to wire external circuitry. I know that there are pads for a filter capacitor and current to voltage resistor on the SCXI-1100. COuld these pads be used to solder in a precision resistor to serve as a voltage divider? The voltage I am trying to measure is a 24V DC signal."

    The pads you can see on the 1100 are pretty much bread boards that you can use to build your own circuitry on.
    You can build a voltage divisor on that space, just make sure to follow the current specs of the SCXI module.

  • SCB68 thermocouple wiring

    I want to acquire 10 thermocouple's readings. I have a 6062E & SCB68. My questions are:
    - Which position should the switches be switch to? (CJC ON, acc. power on?)
    - How do I perform each TC wiring? I mean, I understand TC should be read in Differential mode (not common mode). So then, I think I shouldn't use AIGND and each of the TC wires should be screwed in an AIXX, so that the relative reading can be obtained. Which AIXX should I use (say, one TC to AI2 & AI9, for example...)? How do I know how the AI channels are paired (I mean, how do I wire them, in which positions?), which one positive and which one negative?
    - After wiring (say in AI2 & AI9) for example, when defining the physical channel in the .vi, which one should I reffer to: AI2, AI9, both??
    - As for the CJC... Performing some trials, DAQAssistant gave me an error if all 3 channels I had selected had the BUILT IN option. Why is this? Can't I set a BUILT IN option? Do I have to wire a AO (trough CJC sensor may send its output) to an AI and select it? Which AO?

    Hello,
    The switches position depends on what kind of measurement you would like to take. In page 8 of the SCB 68 manual you can see all the details. Normally, you would choose MIO with differential temperature sensor mode.
    For wiring your thermocouples, you should set differential mode and just use each AI+ and AI- lines. For example in differential mode, AI1 will use AI1 terminal as positive input and AI9 as the negative one, channel AI2 will use AI2 and AI10 and so on... This means that channels AI8-16 will become the negative inputs for channels AI0 to AI7. Therefore, when referring to these channels, you should only refer to channels AI0 to AI7. You should not use AI0 since it is connected to the internal temperature sensor of the SCB-68
    Maybe DAQAssistant is returning an error because you are trying to read from AI0.

  • How to load a custom waveform for use with DAQ voltage generation

    I would appreciate some advice on how to take a custom waveform (just a modified triangle wave with pauses at the tops and bottoms) and use that to control the voltage output from a DAQ. 
    Some background:  My intent is to use the waveform to control mirror scanning for a LADAR imaging application .  Because our DAQ (NI-6251) only has one clock, it cannot update the X and Y channel voltages independently. I'm using a triangle wave to control both axes, which works fine for the X direction.  However, to prevent the Y axis from incrementally steping up after every X pixel, I'd like to construct a waveform, similar to a step pyramid, so that the Y axis remains constant over the X sweep and only updates to the next row after all X pixels are collected.
    I assume I can make the desired plot in excel, and then read it in somehow - but this is where I start to get fuzzy.  Can any one point me to an example or tutorial on this?
    Some other questions:
    1. Do I needto worry about scaling? will my custom plot need to contain a specific number of points (perhaps the exact number of pixels in the image)?
    2. If I change the image dimensions, will I need to revise the control waveform in the Y axis?

    This thread didn't appear to go anywhere.  I am trying to do something similar and was looking for help.  I want to create a repeating output voltage wave based off the excel file attached(with times).  Is there a way to have my program match the output voltage and time with the table attached on a repeat and send that signal to the output?

  • Is it possible to use an older model Dell printer (wired) with a HP wireless laptop?

    I am using an HP Pavillion laptop computer with Windows 7 at home. I am connected to a wireless printer (Canon 3 in 1). I have to leave town & go to my aunt's house in another city. She has no computer setup at her house, but we have wireless router there so I can use my laptop.
    Can I take my old Dell printer (which I used when I had a desktop), plug it into my laptop (I assume I'll have to also install printer) & use it there (without it being wireless, etc.?). The ink should still be viable but it has been several months since I've used it. I need to know if it would be worthwhile to take my old printer with me & be able to set it up & use it. If so, is it possible to use a laptop (I use wireless at my aunt's house) with a hard-wired printer? And would it be hard to set up?
    Bottom line is, I'm selling stuff on Ebay this week, I have to make an emergency trip to help family, & will probably have to lug items (and print out shipping labels) while I'm there. I thought it might be useful to have in the long run a printer (albeit an older model) that I can use while helping out family in another city.

    If I read this right, you can install your wired printer right now and test it out.  Then go on your trip and just plug in back into your computer and it will work just fine.

  • Windows 7 64 bit has problems with Actiontec MI424WR while wired with wireless radio off

    I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 64 bit OS.  My attempted set up was to havea 802.11n Belkin Play router connected to my Actiontec MI424WR router as a wireless access point with the MI424WR wireless radio turned off.  This worked fine for my XP 32 bit PC, my Windows 7 32 bit PC, and my 2 Windows 7 64 bit laptops using wireless.  A problem arose when I tried wired connections on the Windows 7 64 bit laptops and a Windows 7 64 bit PC. 
    While wired, internet would drop either completely or intermittently but too frequently to be useful.  Tech support had no idea what to do or what caused it.  It was reproducible after a reset of the router and then turning off the wireless radio.
    I could fix it by turning on the wireless radio again, but I had hoped to turn it off and only use wireless from the 802.11n router.
    Any ideas?

    Did you disconnect wireless on the 2 Windows 7 64 bit machines while testing wired?
    What is the connection between the Actiontec and the Belkin?  LAN-to-WAN or LAN-to-LAN?
    If the connection is LAN-to_LAN, the wireless connection on each machine would have obtained a DHCP address from the Actiontec.  When you connected wired, you would have gotten a new IP address based on the different MAC address of the wired NIC, resulting in the machine having 2 IP addresses.  This may not be readily apparent on the Actiontec main status page as the second connection will get a generated name of "new-host-xx" (the router can't reuse the same PC name for 2 different IP addresses).  Windows should be able to keep the two connections on the same subnet straight, but I've seen WIndows do stranger things.
    If the connection is LAN-to-WAN, the Belkin must have a different subnet address than the Actiontec (e.g.. 192.168.2.x).  Now, if you connect both wired to the Actiontec (192.168.1.x) and wireless via the Belkin (192.168.2.x), Windows is going to have connections to two different subnets with two different gateway routers. Without explicit routing rules, Windows won't know which gateway to use.

    Do you have any idea if MSI plans to give its users an option for higher voltage to the cpu in later Bios updates?  
    Does this board even support it?
    I know that there are a lot of people asking the same question.  
    I am an avid overclocker and I know I am being limited extremely by this...
    My RAM will past Memtest x86 all the way up to 250MHZ but as soon as I go to load windows it craps all over the place.  
    I wish there was some more information on this as if MSI isnt going to make this available I am going to have to go get another board :(
    I also own another msi board the 865PE for my P4 Media system and it clocks great.  It's a 2.4B to 3.15 no prob!
    I have seen posts wth people getting the AMD64 3200+ to 2.6 and over with other boards that allow high Vcore such as the ABIT KV8-MAX3.  In the post I saw the guy had his Vcore to 1.75. That would be great!
    Anyone with knowledgable input would be greatly apprecited especially Bas.
    Posts on other boards besides the Abit and gigabyte as far as clockable boards would be helpful too.

    We'll that makes mee feel a little better to to know that even a .1 step up in voltage allows the memory to get to 245.  For me at least so far I dont even have to step up the voltage in the AGP and memory area.  My OCZ ram in 2.9V stable while still under warranty but right now I am limted only by the Vcore.  
    It is good to know though that the Abit board doesn't allow for stepping up in those areas as of yet though cause once we do get a little more Vcore into our processors that will become more usefull down the road.  Though if you say they slowly bring in more options for the Bios we can only cross our fingers for now until we can hear from MSI directly.  
    On Monday I am going to try and give them a call and see what I can get out of the tech support group.    
    I will post what reply they give me.
