Thinking of leaving BT

Hi Everyone,
I am thinking of leaving BT, but not sure whether I should or not.
The reason is that my area has been enabled for infinity but I can't get it, I am thinking of moving to Virgin Media to get their 60mb speeds.
Does anyone have past experience of virgin media.
My question is should I stick with my BT 7.5mbps connection and wait till fttp becomes available or just go with Virgin.
Hope someone can help,
Many Thanks

  • Thinking of leaving BT as new customers get better...

I am out of commitment with bt and tried to sign up for 12 months and avail of new deals, whilst downgrading from infinity 2 to infinity 1. As an existing customer of 20+ years I am quoted more than a new customer which is unfair.

The fact that other ISPs may do the same thing doesn't make it wrong. BT along with all the other ISPs are providing a service in order to make money.
It does make financial sense to the company to offer deals to attract new customers rather than to give discounts to existing customers. There reason for this is the vast majority of existing customers do not check around for better deals and having found them, move their business. So why would any company give a discount to people who are going to stay anyway.
Some people may say "what about customer loyalty" There is no such thing as customer loyalty, it all comes down to the service provided and the cost. The customer falls into one of three groupings a) they are happy with the service and are prepared to pay for it. b) they are not and will move. c) apathy. Loyalty has nothing to do with it.
For everyone who moves because they get offered a  better deal else where there is probably at least the same number who moves to BT for the deal they are offering. It balances out.
If it did make more financial sense to offer discounts to existing customers you can bet that it would be happening.

  • Really Fed Up Now I Am Thinking Of Leaving BT for ...

I moved into my house on the 30th March and was told my connection would be 11mb, 1st night i did a speedtest and got just under 7mb which i thought was ok as speed goes up and down on a new line, i did a speed test the morning after and to my absolute horror i was only gettong 128kbps!!! thats like dial up! i am on the top package and i aint paying for that kind of speed, i have had an engineer out to test the line which is fine aswell as my internal wiring so the problem is away from my house, i have got through to some right idiots on the phone who talk to me like i am 3 years old, i have tried everything like changing filters etc, now i just got a call saying their is excessive noise on the line and they are going to make it quieter so that my speed goes up but i have to wait 48hrs to see if it improves! i feel as though i am just being fobbed off and passed from pillar to post!! i just want a broadband engineer to sort the problem out!! the service i am getting for my £50 a month is absolute rubbish!! my upload speed is faster than my download speed (i have told them this) which must mean that their is an obvious problem, i have even tried different routers and the speed is still exactly the same! i feel like picking up the phone and ordering Virgin 50mb broadband and phone because i have had enough of being on the phone to somebody who does not understand what i am saying and talks to me like i am a child!!! i am really really upset with BT who i stick with because i have never had a problem before even though Virgin offer better speeds and are cheaper!! can someone on here sort it for me so that i can get a broadband engineer onto the problem and get it fixed?
    Regards
    Lee

i understand about the 10 day training, but surely i should be getting better speeds already, at my previous address during the 10 day training period i nothiced the speeds varied but i was still getting good speeds.

  • Loyal Customer Thinking About Leaving Soon!

I have been a Loyal Customer of "Verizon" for years and was happy but recently i had a "Horrible Experience" my Droid X was replaced in 10-2011 and it voided a discount on 1 of my lines that i was getting for years.  I was told that i could no longer recieve the discount and that was that.  The discount was $6.00, but i guess the company would go bankrupt to continue to give me a discount that i been getting for at least 5 years. They are willing to lose a customer with a guarantee bill of $220.00 a month for $6.00.  Then i added a line on my family share account with an old phone just to find out 2 days later the phone was put on it's own plan.  I called back to correct this matter and the phone was then put on the family share plan, but the representative changed my plan somehow.  Due to verizon no longer offering my current plan it had to be sent to a special department to be put back on the account.  I then decided this is to many situations occurring back to back so i decided to look through my bills and see what my charges where from this past year.  I realized that a line i put a block on since 2008 was being charged for a 1 year for text premium services of $9.99 and 2 months $19.99. When i asked for verification of the block i was told i had blocked something else not that in 2008!  What else could it have been because i never blocked the internet or texting?  I was then told they couldn't credit me all my money back, because they don't go back that far anyway.  What?  I guess i'm suppose to keep paying for verizon mistakes.  So now my Droid X that was just replaced in 10-2011 is shutting off frequently so i decided to upgrade my phone, because a representative stated that my line was eligible for and upgrade.  I went to Best Buy on Monday to upgrade and was told i could only upgrade at "Verizon Wireless", because it's considered an early upgrade!  Am i not still locked in a contract for 2 years so why should it matter, a upgrade should be an upgrade and of course the phone is $100.00 more at verizon than Best Buy, so i see it's not about keeping your customers and making them happy it's now about how much $$$$ you can get out of me.  I am going to continue to get replacement's for both of my lines until my contract is up and looking for service elsewhere.   Very disappointed!

First of all i probably have been a verizon customer longer than you and if you know verizon like i know verizon your taxes and fees change so if it's a $10.00 - $20.00 difference i usually  just pay it  and #2 I know what i put on the phone because this happened to 1 of my accounts back in "88" so speak what you know.  #3 I made my changes with a representative and checked my account  2 days later and that's how i was aware of the mistake the representative made. I never went over  a plan with a representative so why was the line put on a plan by itself since you know so much  about my experience!  #4 I also did all that you put up here opting out and everything and it's still  on my bill this month!  So once again talk what you know!  #5  As far as my discount this is  something i been getting for years i don't care what you don't get because i don't pay your bills  and verizon has promotions for different people, agency's and etc. everyday so everyone is not the   same so once again speak on something you know about. #6 When i was upgrading i went to an  authorized agent which was "Best Buy" so what are you talking about every phone and upgrade i  have done has been from Verizon or Best Buy not just anyone so once again speak on what you  know.   #7 anything i do i do with a "Verizon Agent" who recently has made several mistakes on my account and admitted to it.  If i'm calling and adding a phone on my family share how do my plan change?  You don't know because they couldn't answer it.  And last I want you to know that i am far from lazy so watch your mouth.  Don't get disrespectful, because you don't know me to call me out my name.  Verizon messed up and that happens, but don't quote on my comment being nasty when you don't know the facts.  I also received a $400.00 bill this month for there error not mines, due to a representative again not doing there job.

  • Why is it cheaper to leave verizon including ETF?

I am seriously thinking of leaving for T-mobile. I have a family plane with 3 iPhones and 6gb of shared data and pay $206 a month. That includes my discount from work.  I can pay my ETF for three iPhones Unlimited everything "bring your own device" and still save money. Directly from their website:
    3 Lines Plan
    $150 per month
Plus taxes, fees and monthly device payment
    Line 1 / $ 70 month
    Unlimited talk, text and web
Unlimited high-speed data on our network. Up to 2.5GB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service.
    International roaming
    Line 2 / $ 50 month
    Unlimited talk, text and web
Unlimited high-speed data on our network. Up to 2.5GB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service.
    International roaming
    Line 3 / $ 30 month
    Unlimited talk, text and web
Unlimited high-speed data on our network. Up to 2.5GB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (SMH) service.
    International roaming
That does not included my 25% employer discount. That would bring me to $113 plus taxes and fees. About three months of service would pay off my ETF. Over the next 9 months i'd save about $800 to switch.  One year left on contract. Why is Verizon so much? Why should I stay? Don't say coverage because I have a "network extender" in my house and I live in a large city.
    Thanks for any help.

Well no one can really answer that question. Opinions maybe.
On T-Mobile your first line is $50 unlimited Talk & Text. add in $20 for unlimited data with 500Mb of teathering per month. add taxes and fees around $79 but you lose that 25% discount. You may have a discount of 15% I don't know who you get the discount from.
On the second line it is $40 for unlimited Talk & Text and again add in $20 for Unlimited data with 500Mb of teathering per month. So that costs $60.00 plus taxes and fees around $66.00
Now your third line is $20 for unlimited Talk & Texting and another $20 for unlimited data with 500Mb of teathering per month for a cost of $40 plus taxes and fees. Around $45 per month.
So its $79.00+$66.00+$45=$190 per month for the three lines. if you get a discount subtract that from the total.
Now you have to purchase three devices at full price so that will cost you around $1900.00 plus tax, sim kits at $10.00 each but you can place these devices on T-Mobiles EIP plan so you pay maybe $25 per month for twenty four months.
Again another issue is T-Mobile has very bad service in many areas. They are in fourth place and although they are building out, the coverage is terrible. in major cities it us great. but if you travel, forget it. And yes I have one line of service with them.
    http://www.t-mobile.com
However if you travel look at the free texting and data from over 100 countries, and they only charge .20¢ per minute for all global calling. It is the best deal in the cell phone industry.
    Good Luck

  • Leave your Mac On or Shut it Down???...What the Genius Say?

    Hi Guys!!!!!
What do you think about leaving your Mac On or shut it down when you are not using it????
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Sleep mode has to supply power to the RAM memory in order to facilitate rapid wake-up. On the MacBook, safe sleep is the default mode. The MacBook will wake itself up when the battery gets low, then save the memory image to a disk file before the battery runs out.
In another thread, the same question came up. Users reported sleep would use about 4% of the battery every day. That seems very reasonable since a lithium ion battery will often discharge a few percent per day just sittig doing nothing.
I turn my MacBook off when I am not using the MacBook. I am impressed at how quickly the MacBook boots up rom being totally off. If you are a heavy duty multitasking person, the obvious advantage of sleep is the applications you were usng last time are open with the files you were woking on already open when you wake up the machine.
If you worry about wearing out the battery, you can change the sleep mode with the command line tool called pmset. You can use pmset to set the default sleep mode to always deep sleep to disk. The disadvantage of deep sleep is it takes longer to wake up, but is does reduce unnecessary battery use.
This thread discusses the use of pmset:

  • Standard def STB repeatedly blacks out for a second or 2

A site search on "black out" does not turn up a similar issue, of course it may be my search skills are lacking.
New subsciber since Sep 2010.   I have 3 boxes, 2 standard QIP2500 phase 3 (basement/MBR) and 1 hi-def (LR). Hi def TV in MBR, standard in other 2.  Both standards would on occassion 'black out' for just a second or 2 ever since original install. No problem with the hi-def. One standard is wired with coax, one with s-video, the hi-def with HDMI.  When the black out occurs, the screen will freeze for an instant, then the screen goes black, then it comes back. The information on the box does not black out, the TVs don't power-off and restart. It's just the screen goes blank and then comes back. It happens without any seeming warning, and will happen at any time of day. Sometimes it will happen repeatedly, sometimes it won't happen for a long time.  Both boxes have been repeatedly reset and rebooted with no improvement.  During one tech call the tech had me relocate one of the standard boxes to the hi-def location to isolate that it wasn't a location (in-house cable) problem. I thought it curious since it was happening at 2 different locations but went through the drill anyway.  The relocated standard worked for a few minutes, then went black for a second as the problem does.  Plugging the high-def back in resolved the issue at that location. The tech said he would send 2 new standard boxes. The replacement boxes have not resolved the issue.  Any suggestions?

if it's doing that on two different boxes using both coax and s-video then I think that leaves a possibility of the coax.  that would be a unusual symptom of a bad coax/splitter but try this.
Wait for it to start acting up - when it starts acting up, stay tuned to that station, and hit your menu > customer support > in home agent > network diagnostics and click ok to start.
check the video signal using that menu selection.  after it's done running it will give you a general message like "you're video signals are not in the optimal range"     after you see that, hit info and then look at the SNR DB   it should give you a number.
32-36 is optimal, below that is questionable.
If it is below that then it's probably going to be a problem with the splitter at your house, and you would either replace it yourself, or call verizon to replace it.  be sure to tell them the DB

  • Unable to shutdown DB - Only ABORT works

    Hi,
I just cloned a DB onto a Solaris 5 box with Oracle 7.3.4 from an AIX.
There were only a few transactions done by 1 user which probably had some sorting ; which used the temp tablespace probably.
When I tried to shutdown the DB - It wont ; I waited for 3 hours and tried an ABORT / Startup / Shutdown immediate. Still hangs for a long time. 2 hours and waiting.
Alert Log shows -- Waiting for smon to disable tx recovery.
I increased the "nice" priority for SMON thinking maybe it may help; but cant see any diff as of now.
I am thinking of leaving it for another few more hours to see if it would shutdown "immediate".
I read a few metalink notes : 1076161.6 / 61997.1 ; but the fet$ count sticks at a value and doesnt increase ( as per the document )
If this doesn't shut down in another 6 hours, will a constant "shu abort" cause any issues to the data ? I cant leave it for more than this time for it to shutdown gracefully.
    Any Advice please ?
    Thank you.

Abort for the shutdown won't create as such any severe issue(s) for the db with the only impact that the next time, database would be requiring recovery to be done and this can take from no time to very significant time even , depending on the number of transactions happened in the last life of the database. Before doing an abort, if you really have to do so, issue an "alter system checkpoint" . This would ensure that the buffers from the cache is flushed to the datafile and on next startup, number of buffers requiring recovery should be less.
That said, a quick search over Google, gave this thread for the same error. Check it out and hope it helps.

  • My thoughts (and yours too!) about Arch (I'm in love already!)

Hello all!  I suppose I would be called a newbie to Arch, but certainly not to Linux.  I've been running Gentoo for five months.  If I were running, say, Ubuntu for five months, I would probably still be considered a newbie, but five months of Gentoo has made me pretty proficient at Linux.
I (if you haven't guessed yet) am a Gentoo user , and it seems like there are a lot of Gentoo users who go to Arch.  That's how I heard about it, through the Gentoo forums.  I am currently looking for backups in case Gentoo comes crashing to the ground.  I was perfectly content in my little bubble of happy compiling until I learned about the unrest inside of the Gentoo community.  I never realized that things were in such bad shape... like a downward spiral.  The result cannot be good.  I feel like I'm on a sinking ship and am praying for my life here.  I've seen a lot of threads at the forums lately like "If Drobbins fork Gentoo, will you follow him?" and "Will you stay with Gentoo if the Foundation is handed over to a 3rd party?"  I find these a little unsettling!  I understand that the Foundation is a terrible state right now, and the founder's attempt to get it back has failed, so now I don't things are going to head up.  So I've started to face facts, that I better have some backup plans so that I'm not starting over from square 1 when this all burns to the ground (hopefully if, not when, because I like Gentoo and really don't want to have to give it up).  Now I admit that I don't like EVERYTHING about Gentoo, but I like almost everything, and Arch seems to be like Gentoo in many respects.
Some of my personal desires in a distro:
1.Bleeding edge with rolling updates (and thus no need to ever reinstall the distribution)
    2. A large repository for the package manager
    3. Not a newbie distro... a distro for those who like the command line and to do things themselves
    4. Good community
    5. Customizable
    6. The ability to choose between a stable and unstable package on a per-package basis
    7. Install from source
Arch seems to satisfy 1,3, 4, and 5 correct?  And pretty well satisfies 2, though I can see its package manager is not as big as Gentoo (though bigger than like Slackware).
I guess for the most part it doesn't satisfy 6 and 7 though, right?  I realize that AUR is source-based, but on the whole, Arch is binary, so I'm referring to the overall tendency of the distribution.
Is there the ability to choose between stable and unstable packages though, to be as bleeding-edge as possible? (I'm thinking no but thought I'd ask)
Many other distributions such as Ubuntu probably wouldn't meet my needs at all.  They seem to have a great repository and community, but I just don't want a GUI-based distro.  The truth is, I want to feel like my computer needs me.  It's my baby.  XDDDD  Okay, that's pretty sad, especially because it's a Pentium II (I can't WAIT to get my new laptop!!!!!!!!!!!), but I appreciate my Gentoo box way more than our Windows box upstairs, a lot of that having to do with the work I had to put into it to get it working correctly, and all that I had to learn.  It makes me appreciate it a lot more, and it makes me a lot better at solving problems.  (If it ain't broken, why not break it so you can fix it? XD)I don't want a distro that does everything for me; I won't feel needed anymore.  Plus, I'm addicted to the command line.  I have a window manager, sure (Thunar with Xfce), but I mostly still use the command line to view my files.  Sometimes I don't even start up X (I never start it up by default) and am just as efficient as when I have it open.  I insist on knowing how to do everything manually... when I wanted to make keyboard shortcuts for X, I chose to use xbindkeys rather than use the GUI with Xfce, so I could do it manually and still have it working if I ever switched desktop managers.  I manually edit pretty much ALL my config files and, like  I said, I am just as efficient without the GUI as I am with it.  I can't go five minutes in GUI without having a virtual terminal open.    So I think, in these respects, Arch would meed my needs quite well, just as Gentoo does now.  I have deiced to try out Arch now anyway, regardless of the state of Gentoo, because you know, i might just like Arch better.  I know a lot of Gentoo users have said they've gone to Arch.    I'm trying to get my friend Evan to let me use his 8 gb hdd to try it on, because my current 6 gig drive for Gentoo is like... 99 percent full (I swear, I'm not kidding, I have 100 mg left, I REALLY have to prune XD), so once I get it, I'm going to install Arch (after unhooking my /home hard drive because I only have two slots for hard drives, and they're both already filled!  I will probably end up moving the /home directory onto that 8 gig drive anyway.  I realize it's hard to share things between distros, but I will at least be able to have a place to put files for both distros in the same place and would probably end up symlinking some same location to my desktop for both distros
Okay, now I'm just ranting.  Back to point!  I'm definitely going to try out Arch, and so far I like what I see. I even recommended it to a friend who is also thinking of leaving Gentoo (for Ubuntu, so he can support his amd64 processor).  I pointed out Arch64 and he's considering it. I don't think he'd like Ubuntu any more than I.  He originally used Slack and only switched to Gentoo because Slack really doesn't have a good package manager.  I think he'd like Arch as well.
I've also done research on other distributions someone like me might like (especially coming from Gentoo).
    This is my current list:
    Arch Linux
    Frugalware (based on Arch, right?)
    Zen Walk
    Vector Linux
CRUX (I'm leaning away from this one, as of now)
    Lunar
    Source Mage
    Sorcerer
FreeBSD (but I've decided not to go with FreeBSD, as much as I like installing from source, because their philosophy of stability over currentness (like not having flash 9 because it's not "stable") just doesn't fly with me.. Linux is better for me, I think)
LFS.. okay, not really, but if I ever have a weekend when I'm REALLY bored.........
I've used Slack before but I would prefer to have a package manager, so I'm steering away from that direction, as much as I liked Slack.
Have I missed any other distros people in this sort of mindset like us might like?  ^_^
My primary focus right now is Arch, and it's definitely my first preference as far as switching goes.
I think my biggest problem with Arch is that I REALLY like to compile everything from source (or at least, have Portage do it for me :-p), so I"d miss that.  Especially USE flags.  However,  Source Mge/Lunar/Sorcerer don't sound as good as Arch, and FreeBSD just... isn't my thing.  Their package manger seems great, it's their overall philosophy I disagree with.
This post really isn't asking for help with anything, but isn't that fine?  This is just the Arch Linux General Forums, right?  I just wanna talk about Arch as compared to other distros.  I've wiki-ed it some, but I just think it's a fun thing to discuss.
So what things do you guys like better about Arch, and what things do you like better about Gentoo, or maybe about some other good distros?
I can't wait to try out Arch; I'm so excited!  No Xubuntu for me! ^___________^ (Gnome and ESPECIALLY KDE would lag far too much for this computer)
    -Megan M-

Well, I technically have 14 gigs... I have the 6 gig and a 4 gig which has /usr/portage (the portage tree probably takes up so much space it would outweigh any space saved through USE flags XD) and /var/tmp, since that can get huge while compiling and I don't have space on the 6 gig for the fluctuations in space... I had to install the binary for OpenOffice just because the temporary space required to compile it was bigger than the space I had on my hard drive!!!!and I actually have so little space left I am permanently using a ext3 formatted flash drive as my ~/Desktop (it's in my fstab and everything XD!)  This gives me 4 extra gigs for all my stuff.
But anyway, just you people answering this thread so nicely confirms my feelings about the Arch community.  I can easily see a thread like this simply being ignored on the Gentoo forums, or just merged with other threads.  >.<
Actually, to be honest, most pakcages I am running unstable on Gentoo had to do with compile errors and such, or some feature not working correctly in the older version.  The only ones that I just wanted to run unstable are.. lemme check my /etc/portage/package.keywords... Skype and Pidgin.  And possibly Mplayer too, I was thinking of.  Everything else was either because of problems or of it being in the Sunrise overlay (everything in there is masked as unstable since it's not an official part of the Portage tree).
How easy is it to get an older version of a package?  I ask because I want Flash 9.0.48.0-r1, NOT 9.0.115.0.  The newer one made my Firefox commit suicide and just close with an error when I viewed certain pages (youtube, etc. was fine, but even going to www.adobe.com made it crash *irony*).  Gentoo forum users told me that then newer one was unmasked because of a security flaw found in the older one, but for me, I'd rather take my chances with the hole than have firefox crash every five minutes!!!!  Is there any way to specify not to update a package either, for when you do a world update (or whatever they are called in Arch)?  This also has to do with Flash... I'll give the newer one a try... maybe it was just a Gentoo issue... but if not, I'm DEFINITELY downgrading!
I like how easy it seems for Arch users to add packages to AUR so they are available to others... this is harder to do on Gentoo, despite that everything is source-based.  It's most like there is a wall between the users and the developers that cannot be broken easily.  This seems like a good way to let users have a little fun in the developer's world without *being* one.
One last question while I'm here.. my other friend who I sugested Arch to... I just want to confirm that Arch would support his CPU.  He said to me:
    "Oh, and my CPU arch is amd64 / x86-64 / emt64-t
thechnically its em64t since its an intel CPU but i am running a k8 optimized system (because I used to have a opteron)"
    ^_^
PS: Your forums may be smaller than those of Gentoo, but that is not necessarily a disadvantage.  There is like a perfect size, I think.  You can be too small OR too big... with bigger forums, it is so much easier for a thread to just get buried if no one can answer it right away, even though someone else might be able to but will never see it because it's already buried.  This happened to me in the Ubuntu forums.  I obviously do not run Ubuntu but posted a question there regarding mtpfs with a particular MP3 player, because I figured the forums were large enough that I'd get at least a few people with the same mp3 player and they could tell me their experiences with the program.  HA!  Instead, I just got 0 replies and it was simply buried.  With forums, bigger isn't *always* better, imo.
PPS: What is your policy on patching the source code?  For example, GTK+ recently deprecated a few features that TiLP(1 and 2) depends on.  The source code will now not compile.  I made a patch for it to fix it (I was supposed to submit that ebuild two days ago... grah, I really should do it tomorrow!), for otherwise it just gives errors.  If it is TiLp2 you have in the repository, it is literally as simple as adding one line in the source code (and is the fix the developer himself recommended), but Gentoo did not even notice and kept the source code in the tree the same even though it would no longer compile! @_@  This kind of ticked me off, personally, which is why I have to submit that patch tomorrow!  ha ha

  • Design Flaw in Twin Frozr fans

So, I'm finally creating a thread about this.
There's been reports over the last few years about fans making rattling noises, grinding noises, high pitched whines, whether on cold boot, idle, high RPM, or constantly, and quite frankly I'm tired of MSI ignoring the issue.
There is a design flaw with the Twin Frozr fans.
MSI needs to publicly acknowledge this.
Currently, the only way to get a replacement fan is to send your ENTIRE card in for repair.  Other more reputable companies will send you out an entirely new fansink attachment at no cost.  As one poster said it; "That would be like sending my car to Nissan every time I blow a tire"
My personal experience with Twin Frozr started with Twin Frozr 2 on my GTX 460 Hawks.  The Talon Attack edition started to make a bad grinding noise on cold boot or if it actually got cold enough during idle operation.  When the card warmed up, the noise stopped.  Speeding up the fan to 100% sometimes also caused it to get rid of the noise, but that was only temporary unless the card stayed warm.
My non-hawk exhibited rattling as well, but to a lesser extent.  No grinding noise on cold boot, just a low rattling.
My next card was a GTX 670 PE with Twin Frozr 4.  Surely they fixed the issue by now right?  Wrong!  Within 30 days I started having fan issues.  This fan doesn't rattle, but there is a high pitched whine when the fan is in operation.  The faster the RPM, the louder the whine.  Most people don't even know they have this issue because of the subtle tone of the whine and it being muffled by the fan's air sound at higher RPMs.
That's 3 separate graphics cards all exhibiting an issue with their fans.
There's one thing in common with these issues; it's only caused by the fan closest to the I/O.  This boggles my mind.  Surely if there was a problem with the fan design itself it would affect both fans, right?  I just don't understand it.  This leads me to believe it's a design flaw with the Twin Frozr design.
Some people seem to have an issue with the other fan, but it appears to be rare and not the same type of problem the majority of people are reporting.
Seeing as they want you to lose your card (and $10+ to ship it) for weeks at a time to 'fix' an issue which will no doubt happen again, something needs to be done about this.  Their 'warranty' policy for this issue is completely unacceptable, as is the fact that the fans start acting up within a month of ownership.

I don't think we have a MSI office in Portugal, most brands don't.
Some stores are not reliable they buy from EU retailers some even from Asia retailers and usually they don't give proper support. In Lisbon you have stores like Globaldata, Nanochip, Chiptek and AquaPC they are in business for years, have good customer support and have also good prices.
I'm probably not going to buy any MSI product from now on , for obvious reasons.
Trying to contact a support shoudn't be this hard from a client , at this point I assume anyone that's doesn't want to lose time will just give up.
As a consumer I was forced to RUN and TRY to find msi support , MSI support mail doesn't event exist , since I made this thread it still hasn't been changed.
I really liked MSI ( I still have my 875P MSI neo here with my p4 and the NX6800 working ) it's like saying goodbye to an old friend that has been by my side since P4 times.
I'll buy msi products in US , or in another country maybe , but never MORE in portugal.
This is not cause of the shops , I recommend everyone to buy in the shops listed !!
In fact most of the portuguese shops tried to help me find msi support ( even though they weren't the stored that sold me the card ).
I really don't want ppl to get this mixed up, the problem here is MSI not acknowledging a problem that is simple to fix, having a non-existant email on their webpage as support for over 4 months and the fact that as a consumer I was forced to jump trough loops to actually contact MSI itself !
Every portuguese shop I contacted was super nice and really helpful pointing me to the new msi email
And actually the fix ( hot needle fix forum post link ) came from a shop reply.
US support was always super nice and helpful !
I was forced to fix my fan with the help of users.
If right now my MSI gpu is working is thanks to guru3d and hardwareoc and simillar forums ( thanks to everyone that posted Twin Frozn fixes , this may not mean much , but really .. thanks for helping me out ! )
MSI didn't help or even try to help me , I had to go out of my way to get help , and I never did.
I know some of those stores , they have great prices , but if I buy anything in portugal I'll buy other brands for obvious reasons. ( it was actually one of those shops that helped me pinpoint the "real" msi email )
I am a customer , I should be treated as such , I was joked and pushed around emails , found emails that don't even exist , I was ignored and left looking at a card going dead.
Maybe for some of you it's easy , you just buy another one .... and maybe that's the custommer MSI wants. But that's not me.
Pointing me to places to buy MORE is almost insulting at this point. I wont buy more ... I would be stupid of I did.
I just hope some other person that has MSI and is having this problem with Twin Frozn fans ( that msi refuses to acknowledge as THEIR problem !! ) can fix them themselves or take some info from my posts and others to at least understand what is happening.
From my pov , the fan eventually has some sort of lubrication problem , and due to that it starts to wobble , after that the coils heat up to a point it wobbles even more.
Due to the high temps the fan either "looses" enough to dump all the lubing out.
At some point the fan will heat up so much the plastic IS REALLY hot to the touch and fells that it can be actually moldable ( so I assume this is really bad )
This leads to the start-stop problem , the fan tries to kick itself on , but just makes things worse.
This leads to a fan that fails in 2-3 years.
MSI should either had a way to put oil in the fan OR just start to be ready to replace them.
The fact that IS an ebay market for Twin Frzn fans is just flabbergasting .
I wish I had a better view on this , but seriously looking at this thread,  and seeing all the steps I have done , to find there are others like me that have a failing fan and that the ones that aren't ignored like me have to RMA a card for a simple fan doesn't give me any sort of confidence in this brand.
MSI has one of the best gpu coolers  , honestly it's so god that after all this mess I stand as a testimony for it being one of the BEST gpu coolers around ! All my MSI products so far have been great ... but this experience was just ... weird ..
I wish MSI would contact the ppl that are in my position and help them , it's just a fan  , it's an easy fix and it's easy to replace.
There are lots of ppl right now with fans starting to fail , just take their card , replace the fan and send them back , and MSI will have happy customers , HAPPY cause the brand CARED !
I'm only 1 client , MSI hardly "fells" me leaving ... I really like MSI ... so I wish this won't ever happen again to no one !
I have been ignored in mailing for TDR problems , after that about the 12h+ card artifacting being fixed with cold boot ( I assume this was an nvidia problem )
After using certain drivers that didn't TDR my card ( I have enough PSU for it so ... it's not the PSU ) and having been 2 years finding my own "solutions" to problems ... being ignored and just struggling to get help from MSI for a stupid FAN a cheap part and being hard just to contact them to get no answer .... and getting help from other users while MSI ignores me ? ... I'm thinking on leaving the brand ...
The fans are now working 100% , I'll post info when and if they fail ( if I see my "fix" stopped working ) .
It has now been a long time since 2011 and my first reports , and its been almost 6 months since I contacted msi about the portuguese email listed not existing.
The email is still there , that non-existent email is STILL listen in MSI website RIGHT NOW after me being emailing them about it for 4+ months ,as a customer,  I can only assume they either ignore people , or they have a terrible communications internally .
Again after all this mess , I would be kinda stupid to support or try to buy another product from this brand , MSI support was always great and was the main reason I bought msi products, all this posts are from a person that was truly SHOCKED in everything that is happening and the feeling that no one cared.

  • Open letter to Nokia from a C6-00 deceived user.

    Dear Sirs,
I have been using Nokia mobile phones for 10 year. Starting from the simplest ones to the new smartphones. My latest phones were N70, N73, X6 16GB and C6-00.
I am used to change my mobile phone once each two years. In the last year I have spent more than 1200 Euros in mobile services (Voice & Data), this could
make an idea of how much I use my mobile phone. Unfortunately, my X6 suffered an accident this year (nothing can resist a falling of 30 m) and my service provider told me to choose any smartphone from its mobile phone catalog for free. Just any smartphone I wanted (Apple iphone 4, HTC, Nokia ...). So, my decision was a C6-00 because the keys in my old X6 full keyboard on-screen were very small and it caused me to do mistype each three types and C6-00 has a separated keyboard with keys bigger.
Till the very first moment I received my C6-00, I suffered from random hangs that made me be unavailable or even cut a phone call. The only way to solve
a hang was to put out/in battery. I have been waiting for a software update to solve this, but in Spain the update is not yet available. I have used the customer support of my service provider for complaining about the malfunction of my smartphone.
Yesterday, a customer support agent of my service provider called me, offering me to choose other smartphone (trademark and model I want) for free.
It is sad for me to think about leaving Nokia but I am considering to choose a smartphone from Nokia's competitors. In spite of I like and know the Nokia mobile software, the design, I also know that Nokia's quality is something in the past. I cannot understand how a buggy smartphone can be released to market. It seems that no one tested it for, at least, one week. The C6-00 hang is not a rare thing, it appears in a common use (it only took me 2 hours of use to discover it).
When Nokia changed their firmware to Symbian, mobiles phones startup slowed a lot, battery duration shortened and some features of their old software were lost also. Nothing important, but little things that easy the daily use. As a gadget lover, my friends used to ask me which mobile phone was the best for them. Each time they did, I recommended Nokia. But in the last year I shut my mouth or I said 'I do not know' when that question reached me.
Today, I have to take a decision and tell my service provider which mobile I want. Unfortunately for Nokia, the trademarks and models list, I am evaluating, does not include any Nokia smartphone because of the reasons I have explained.
I hope that this letter reach someone in Nokia that could have the will and the position to change things there to make Nokia again the reference of quality, research and design it was in the past.
    Best Regards,
    Eduardo Souto

In term of feature, the C6 is indeed very good. Nokia is always been famous for their high quality hardware. Luckily my C6 wasn't suffering from the hanging issue since the first firmware but now after the latest firmware update the camera become very unresponsive and buggy.
From what I have read from other user's experience. I felt the way Nokia treating their user is downright terrible. Especially on C series user, which is seen as low rank customer by Nokia because we are not buying their flagship N series model. A lot of C7 user is suffering from hangging issue too (and some N8 user though). We, user of C6 is treated badly by Nokia because we are using the abandoned s60v5 (while they busy on their S^3) and the Cheap **bleep** C series.
Even worse, Nokia did not even offer an open apology to those user who suffered from Nokia C6 hangging issue. This is even worse than Apple denying the fact their reception issue in iPhone 4.

  • How can we make Microsoft listen? (a serious question)

The Windows 7 Beta identified a host of minor problems with the new user interface, and hundreds of people took the time and trouble to point them out, thinking they were being helpful.
The RC has addressed virtually none of them.  Not only does this mean that Microsoft wasted everyone's time by inviting feedback and then ignoring most of it; it also means that W7 will be launched with a host of silly niggles that stop it being a really great product.  This is such a wasted opportunity!!
I'm not talking about major architectural changes here, such as re-introducing the XP-style Start menu.  I understand why MS won't do that.  I'm talking about the really silly, annoying little things that surely could be fixed, and which DO NOT undermine or dilute Microsoft's vision for what they want Windows 7 to be.
I won't list them all here - this forum is full of them for all to see for themselves.  But I can give a few examples, to illustrate my point:
1/ Place the mouse pointer over an icon in the taskbar for a non-running program.  It takes ALMOST TWO SECONDS for the tooltip with the program name to appear.  Now that my most commonly used programs are merely icons - without labels - in the taskbar, I occasionally need to remind myself what program an icon represents.  A two second speed bump is a damn nuisance.
This is such an obvious fault, and must be so trivial to fix, I can't honestly believe MS is seriously thinking of leaving it unfixed for launch.
2/ This one refers to stacked icons in the taskbar (representing a program with multiple windows, of course).  For these, hovering over the icon, and clicking on it, do exactly the same thing (bring up the little preview pictures).  This is IN DIRECT CONTRADICTION to the behaviour for non-stacked icons (a program with just one window), in which hovering over the icon shows the preview, and CLICKING ON THE ICON BRINGS THAT WINDOW TO THE FOREGROUND.
In other words, for non-stacked icons, the hover and click have two distinct functions, both of which feel entirely logical and "smooth".
The obvious question is "OK, but which of the windows should be restored when clicking on a stacked icon?".  The answer has been arrived at independently numerous times by different commentators: the most recently opened window.  This makes good sense ergonomically - there's a good chance that the most recently opened window is the one most likely to be wanted, anyway.
So, the functionality for stacked icons should be: a/ hover shows the preview pictures; b/ click restores the most recently viewed window.
This would then "feel" TOTALLY CONSISTENT with the behaviour for non-stacked icons, and would be a great shortcut.  And again, it has been suggested countless times by some very thoughtful and intelligent commentators.
Here's how the taskbar icons would work, in summary:
    a/ Non-running program
Hover: show program name in a tooltip
Click: launch and bring to the foreground
    b/ Running program, single window
    Hover: show preview picture
Click: bring window to the foreground
c/ Running program, multiple windows (stacked icon)
    Hover: show preview pictures
Click: bring most recent window to the foreground
Totally consistent, fast, "smooth", and suggested by countless commentators.  It is simply better than the current arrangement, and yet is consistent with it and must be perfectly feasible to implement.
3/ Here's a simple one: open an Explorer window.  Make the folder navigation pane (on the left) fairly narrow.  Now try to navigate to a deeply nested folder.
Problem!  The pane no longer has that auto-sideways-scroll that was introduced with Vista, but NOR DOES IT HAVE A HORIZONTAL SCROLL BAR.  The only thing you can do is drag the handle to make the pane wider.  What a bodge!
4/ Gadgets can no longer be "guarded" from maximised windows.  I understand why MS thought the gadget bar was superfluous, but it had one great feature: it made sure gadgets were (or could be) always visible.
It's no good setting the gadgets to "always on top" because that hides parts of the window you are working on.  Now, I can no longer glance across to the calendar, the weather, the exchange rates, the news feeds; I have to un-maximise the window I'm working in, or steer my mouse to the Desktop Peek button.  Time wasted!  It's just another clunky speedbump, and totally unnecessary.
I could go on, but you've got the idea.  There are countless little issues like these that MS has received MASSES of highly consistent feedback on, and yet (for some reason) insists on leaving broken.
Dear Windows 7 development team: we are on your side!  We want W7 to be utterly brilliant!  Most of us are intelligent, experienced "power users" and we have useful things to say.  We are your customers!  Please, what can we do to make you pay attention to these annoying little issues that take the gloss off an otherwise superb product?
At the very least, use your E7 blog to tell us why you want our gadgets to get hidden, why we can't scroll the folder pane in Explorer, why we've got to wait almost two seconds for a tooltip, why we can't single-click restore the most recent window, etc, etc.
    Pretty please??
    Steve Thackery
    (Thack)
PS: Yes, I know you can alter some of these behaviours with subtle registry hacks.  But for 99% of users that's a non-starter.  (And in any case, it can cause unwanted side effects, as I found out when trying to change the mouse hover/tooltip delay).  We want W7 to work properly out of the box.

    Hi Thack
    Your comments are welcome.
Besides posting your comments here, you also need to post it in the official feedback thread. These poasts really are sent directly to the beta team and they really do read them. The more feedback they get on specific changes, the more likely those changes are to be implemented.

  • Time Machine, Time Capsule, Keychain! I am totally lost!

    Hi,
I desperately need some help here! I had my Time Machine setup correctly for a while and have been doing manual backups to Time Capsule without any issues until recently, my backup failed!
The first error I get from Time Machine is:
    ===
    Time Machine Error
The network backup volume could not be mounted because there was a problem with the network username or password.
Open system preferences and choose time machine then re-select the Time Machine backup destination to enter the correct username and password.
    ===
I went to the preferences and selected change disk and re-selected my TC. I was prompted for a password and I entered the correct one. Now I get another error:
    ===
Keychain error -25299 occurred while created a system keycahin entry for the username "*" and URL "afp://**@***.local/**"
You can try using the keychain Access Utility to edit or repair your system keychain.
    ===
After searching the forums, here is what I did so far without any different outcome:
1- Did keychain first aid scan and repair (tested - same errors)
2- double checked all password files related to TC in system and login (tested - same errors)
3- Deleted all password entries related to TC & Network drive from Key Chain to recreate them automatically again (tested - same errors)
4- Reconfigured Airport and TC and changed device pass to disk pass (tested - same errors)
I should also mention that the TC mounts as a disk through the finder without any problems. Only when it is mounted in the finder TM is able to pick it up and display the blue disk icon, but still same errors and backup fails.
    What do I do now?
Will I loose all my previous TM data?
Can I get TM to work again and continue where the last TM backup left off? Or do I need to backup my machine completely again?
It doesn't make any sense that an error like this could happen so easily! It kills the purpose of TM!
Any help would be appreciated ...

Thanks Bob & tomvs for your quick replies. I tried both solutions but no change. I also tried changing the TC name so new password items will be created in the keychain, no change.
If I dont get any new suggestions or solutions, I might as well try resetting my keychain! but I dont know if I will lose my passwords and security notes if I do! But I think it leaves a copy of it somewhere, right?
by the way, after I changed the TC name, all password entries were successfully created in KC, or thats at least what it seams to me.
    any ideas?

  • Regrets giving up unlimited data

I have had the unlimited data plan for 2 years or so. however when I was renewing my plan months ago the customer service agents told me that to get the cell phone for the discounted prices you have to give up the unlimited plan. Then they stated convincing me about how the average American user barely uses 2Gb a month, and that from my previous usage history it's obvious that I will never need more than 6 Gb/m and my bill will be even cheaper. However, all of that turned out to be absolutely untrue. If I would go back in time I would definitely pay the full price for the phone just to keep my unlimited plan.
Now, I have been trying to live with this plan for months and it's unbearable, one month I had to upgrade from 4Gb to 6Gb and then to 8Gb and I am still about to exceed my limit and the bill was huge. I honestly don't mind paying too much if I would feel like am getting something back in return, but to pay $300+ on a phone bill and be so anxious and cautious about the limits and usage etc. is just so frustrating. Whenever I am streaming a video or looking up something online, I have to check my Data usage. Assuming that I upgraded to 12Gb and my bill got to be $350-400, I would understand paying that much to have some peace of mind and not having to keep tracking and being anxious about exceeding the limits.
The thing is we all agree Verizon is the best service in the market, the best in everything but what's the point of have such awesome service when you can't even use it? Especially that with these new smartphones, the best part is to stream and be online when you are away from home, because if am at home I would just use my laptop or tablet. They keep talking about the best and the fastest 4G service, oh but hold on you can use it only to browse every now and then or maybe stream a very short video or use navigation. But not to stream anything for more than 15mins, otherwise you have to look for a hotspot at Starbucks or McDonalds,  oh and also you still have to pay the most expensive bill in the market.
I have actually recommended Verizon to a lot of my friends and family members, I got my uncle and his family and my brother and his family to end their contracts with their previous carriers and to switch to Verizon. Sarcastically, I am the one now thinking about leaving, even though I don't want to, but when I see that I am paying $300 a month and not getting anything in return, but phone calls and text mess. and barely any 4G.
After a lot of thinking, I ended up calling customer service to see what would I owe if I was to end the contract, I have been asked to pay $1000+ in termination fees. What is going on with Verizon, how do you guys treat your customers like that, at least give you customer options when they want to stay with you. I won't mind my bill being $350, 400, or even $450 if I would feel like am getting something in return, but to still be on the limited plan, this is nonsense. What is the problem if Verizon was to offer an unlimited plan to whoever wants it for extra money, and when you talk to the agents about it they say they had to make it limited so that they will be fair to whoever isn't using much data and to not force them to pay for the unlimited. Now they are forcing us to stay on the limited data. I would like to pay more and stay on the unlimited why won't u let me choose that. Oh no, you have to stay on the limited plan and at the same time you can't leave because of the $1000+ termination fees. So, either not use your phone or we will hit you with termination fees. Choose one or the other but no other options. I believe what they have done now is the most unfair, talking about trying to make it fair to other customer who don't use much is nothing but justification to an unfair process. If you wanted that, you could have just added a new plan where you can limit your data and pay less, but at least don't take away our options of having unlimited plan and leave it for whoever is ready and willing to pay more. Because whatever I do, even If I upgraded to 20Gb and my bill is $500 am still limited and can't stream as much as I want.
End of the story, my bill did not get much cheaper as I was told, (maybe $30 cheaper or so), on the other hand I lost the most valuable thing about being with Verizon which is the 4G. All I can say is that I feel like I am using my smartphone just to make phone calls, text messages and maybe some browsing or Nav and my bill is $300. Is this what Verizon calls fair? I would rather get a prepaid phone through any carrier with unlimited text and calls and just use the internet through any Hotspot (which is what I am doing now) and my bill will be 1/3 what I am paying now. However, I am stuck with them for two years because of the $1000 termination fees. I would just like to mention again that I don't want to leave Verizon but they are forcing us to, because of their unfairness. Also, if you can't offer your customers a resolution for their issues, don't ask them to pay a termination fee of $1000+, because you guys aren't offering alternative services. WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO?

"$1000 termination fees" tells me you have multiple lines, as a single smart phone is only $350 ETF at the beginning of the contract, pro-rated -$10 a month each month you are into your contract.
You obviously are not a new customer, did you not have a 4G phone before?  If your using up 6-8+gb a month, it might be time to stop streaming Netflix all day.

  • How do I add more ports to my new Airport Extreme?

How do I add more ports to my new Airport Extreme?  What do I need to buy?

Thinking to leave as is for now-  one 2013 extreme.
That would certainly keep things a lot simpler.
Does it seem right that using speed test I'm getting similar speeds, no matter if I'm connected via wi-fi, or Ethernet?
A very good sign assuming those speeds are reasonably close to the your plan offered by your ISP. The Extreme itself is capable of much faster speeds than your ISP can ever hope to provide.
I'm thinking that all the speed in the world is not going to change Time Warner Cable, the provider for earthlink cable
Not sure what you mean here. Time Warner provides various plans, some up to 50 Mbps. I get 60+ consistently with this plan.  I had a 30 Mpbs plan before that consistently delivered about 35-36 Mbps.
The math is simple. If you download a lot of files from the Internet, a 50 Mbps connection is going to take half as long to download a file as a 25 Mbps connection, for example.
One word of caution though....if you try a higher speed plan...plan to stay, as you will never go back to slower speeds once you have sampled higher speeds. Comcast now owns Time Warner by the way. I don't know whether that will be a good thing or a bad thing.
