TOC - Options?

I am using the "Business Proposal" template to write out a small book. My question is...Can you change the Table Of Contents to just show the Chapter Title and not every heading within each chapter? My table of contents will be pages long and look silly in such a small document. Thanks

The Table Of Contents contains a reference to every other part of the document whose style name includes 'TOC'. The template is set up so that these styles are automatically applied to the headings in your text.
You need to change the style of every heading so that the style name is not one of the TOC ones. If you select one of the headings in your text, then open the Styles drawer, you will see which style name it is. If you then click and hold on the disclosure arrow for this style name, you have some options.
You can either then select all of the headings with the given style name and click on a new style name to change them all to the new style (without TOC), or rename the style, excluding the TOC tag.

Show Merged TOC Option in Merged WebHelp

I am experimenting with merged WebHelp for my company's disaster recovery plans. There is a master company plan and then each department has its own dept plan. I have set up the merge using instructions from Peter's site. I'm running Robo 8.
When I generated the parent project, I did not select the "Show Merged TOC in Child Project" option, but all of the TOCs are still displaying in the merged output anyway. Is that how it's supposed to work? Eventually, I may want them to all display, but right now, I don't. I only want the TOC for the main child project to appear in the output. Is that possible?

Then you don't want that box ticked. The way it works is you generate all the outputs.
- If you open the start page of the parent, you will get all the TOCs showing as one.
- If you open the start page of a child, you will get just that child's TOC, unless you have ticked that check box when you will get the whole lot.

Pages won't let me create TOC, in sections no TOC option

I can't create a TOC (table of contents) inside my pages 09 documents. When I go to the sections tab all I get is blank page and text page, no toc or anything else.

Pages 09, OSX 10.7.3, everything up to date
word processing blank template
I have assigned Heading 1 and Heading 2, and Title
I have watched the tutorial video and read the help section on TOC where they explain you simply go into the first tab of the inspector, go to TOC and choose which you want and if you want pages numbers. I've done this.
Then above the format bar you are supposed to simply choose Sections and from the pull down choose TOC, however I only have Blank and Text Page, no TOC or all the other options shown in the video.

The ToC node is not getting selected although the help result pane displays the correct help page

3. Created a Main project.
4. Merged the above 2 CHM in the project.
5. Created a new window and added Main.hhc in the TOC option under advance properties.
6. Generated html output for entire project Main.chm.
7. Decompile the ‘Main.chm’ and extracted the ToC file ‘Main.hhc’.
8. For each module project, imported ‘Main.hhc’ as a Baggage File, created window definitions same as Main project and with reference to ‘Main.hhc’.
9. Again generated html output for all the modules and copied both the CHM at the same place.
10. Now regardless of my entry point I am able to see entire ToC.
Issue: When I open Module_1.chm, the chm is displayed as follows, but Main book is highlighted instead of module 2 Book. As I have selected both the options, i.e. Auto-synchronize ToC and Always Show Selection option (when generating chm), Module 1 book should get selected.
Is there a way to control the selection in the LHS pane? I am working on a project which has 15 module chms and the chms are integrated with the application. When I press F1 on a module, the default topic is getting displayed and the respective module is not selected in the LHS pane.

TOC from a Header

TOC is a great addition over Appleworks.
I use sections in my reports with differing Headers and footers for each section and put the title of the section in the Header.
Then I can use a standard style in each section for topics etc.
I'd thought I can define a style to use in the header add TOC to that style and my front page index is done.
But for some reason Pages doesn't consider text in headers and footers as being in the document. ie the defined style is greyed out in the TOC options as a style not used in the document.
I'm guessing it can't TOC something that automatically appears on every page of a section.
Any thoughts ?

I had posted a message the other day asking how to create a header from section headings...
In my experience, most text processing apps use the heading names to create entries in headers and table of contents. Latex does this, Word too I think.
Pages should be able to be able to 'know' what text is in a heading or header because its supposed to be all XML.
I guess maybe that will be a version 2 feature.

Auto Creating a TOC in RH8 (for FlashHelp) problem

When I opened my RH8 project today and autocreated the TOC, all books disappeared except for the new one I created today. I painstakingly recreated the TOC with 10-12 books and contents, saved frequently, and regenerated the project, displayed it in Flash -- TOC displays OK. However, when I use the Auto Create TOC option (deselecting the Delete Previous TOC checkbox), it creates a one-book TOC (the one book I added today). Something seems to be broken with the auto-create TOC function. Any clues?

Awfully hard to say what has happened here without seeing your project first hand. Are you using Folders to organize topics? Is the content purely HTML files or is it content that is linked to a Word document?

Header text to appear in TOC

Is there a way to make header text appear in the table of contents? I have set the text that is in the header to Heading 1 in format options, then under the TOC options I have made sure that Heading 1 is selected appear in the TOC, yet it does not. Can no header text appear in a TOC?

No, you can't. There isn't any point having the header in the TOC as headers are meant to be repeated on every page.

TOC will not align with topic

I am working with Robohelp X5. I have built a help file and
have exported it to a chm file - when I open the help file in the
program the top navigation synchonizes with my topics but my TOC on
the left side of the screen does not. Is there a way I can get both
to sychonize together? If not can I get the TOC on the left side to
synchronize with the topics?

HI WKRP and welcome to our community
I suspect you are referring to the Table of Contents and not
the Index. If I'm correct, there are a couple of things you should
do.
Edit your default window. Expand the Windows pseudo folder
and double-click the window. Then ensure a check mark appears next
to the Auto-synchronize TOC option. (It's in the lower left corner
of the dialog)
The other thing to do is to check the settings for the TOC.
Edit the Single Source Layout file. Expand the Single Source
Layouts pseudo folder and double-click the Microsoft HTML Help
layout. Click the Advanced button. Now click the TOC Styles tab.
Ensure a check mark appears next to the Always Show Selection
option.
Give those a go and I'm guessing you will have what you want.

InDesign CS6 TOC Issues

I can create a simple TOC but if I implement some of the options (eg, chapter head entry style) and then save and close, I can no longer reopen the file?
Is this a known problem?

Thank you Peter. Your suggestion appears to have worked. I had created my CS6 file by placing an MS word document. That would seem to have introduced some sort of corruption. I saved my CS6 file to the CS4 option and then after closing and reopening that, I saved it as a CS6 file. I now have the same file type I started with, but I can implement TOC options without causing trouble.

TOC highlighting not synched

Can anyone offer a solution for my problem?
When I hit <F1> to open the help from my application,
the TOC highlights to the correct Context ID Tag. If I close the
help and then <F1> from a different application form, the
Help opens correctly, with the correct TOC entry highlighted.
Yet if you move around an application and hit <F1>
while the Help is open, the appropriate information is displayed in
the 'content' pane of the help, but the TOC highlighting doesn't
update--it stays on the original entry that was invoked via
<F1>.
I've checked around on the boards and have seen some issues
like this, so rest assured that my 'Auto Synch TOC' option is
checked.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

TOC problem

Hi guys this is my first post because i'm stuck with a terrible problem .
I'm doing an elearning course using the feature of TOC.
I have enabled from TOC options the possibility that permit to navigate only the visited slide.
In addition i'm using this function on enter on the first slide that do this:

In this way in our backend we know which was last slide and in the next login we pass the correct parameter to url to resume the course (i know that exist this option in TOC but we need this).
The big problem is this:
If the last visited slide for example is 29, when i resume the course, i cannot navigate from TOC the slide before 29, how can i enable this? There is no option of course from TOC, must be done with variables.. but I tryed everythings.. I wanna use javascript..
My user must be able to navigate slide from TOC also when resume the course. Did u get it?

TOC, resuming a captivate presentation

Hi all-
I'm trying to think through the setup of my course. It has 8 modules and each module has a few lessons associated with it. A question -
I'd like the learner to be able to resume the course where they left off, since it's rather large to do in one sitting. I understand I can do this through the TOC, Self-paced Learning option. Are there other options to do this that I should consider, given that I do not have an LMS?
If I use the TOC option, I'd guess that this becomes the primary navigation for my course. Does that sound right?

Without LMS, TOC is indeed the way to go for bookmarking. You can use other ways of navigation, put the TOC in overlay, can be opened and closed by the user and/or by actions. Definitely I would hide it on the question slides.

Captivate 7 | HTML vesion | TOC problem in IE 9 browser

Hello,
I have published a project to HTML 5 vesion with the option "Scale HTML Content" and with the TOC option. When checked the course on Window 7 with Intenet Explorer 9 browser, the TOC position was not correct. Please ref the image below. Is that the HTML published course from Captivate 7 does not supported on Win 7, IE-9 browser?

Your issue is due to Scalable HTML option. There are too many issues with this option at present. I recommend you turn it off.

"Synchronize TOC" disabled when compiling WebHelp

When I compile WebHelp for a particular project, the
"Synchronize TOC" option (and some others) are disabled. I can't
figure out how this project is different from our other projects,
so I don't know what to fix. Does anyone know why Synchronize TOC
might be disabled?

Hi Eileen.
Do you have the "Contents" toolbar button selected above the
"Synchronize TOC" option. If you don't, this option is greyed
out.

Show/Tide TOC At Runtime?

We are using Captivate 5.5, and wonder if there's a way to set up a TOC so that the learner can show or hide it at runtime?

Hello there,
When you will check the TOC option (Project > TOC> show TOC), Go to settings, and you can choose the Expand icon or collapse icon for TOC.
By default it already shows an icon as ">>" and "<<" on the top left side after publishing the project.
