Touchsmart won't touch

Touchsmart makes "the noise" when I touch the screen but doesn't respond. What can be the reason for this and is it fixable?

Hello GraaHawk:
We need your computers information . Follow my examples please. Mine are HP Touchsmart 600-1050 Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 CTO Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  Just because it is a Touchsmart doesn't mean it has the same operating software. For instance my Touchsmart has software to trouble shoot the touchsreen and calibrate the touchscreen .  They are located in PC Help and Tool folder in the all programs list. HP  Touchsreen  Calibration Utility  should be run when you noticed the touch sensitive wearing off or every couple of months. Then there is touch trouble shooter as well on bottom listed programs in expanded PC Help and Tools folder. Your computer maybe different and found else where or under a different name. That's why as a rule you should post your computer's information. Thank you frrw.

Hello and welcome to the support community
You only option is to buy a copy of Mac OS X, either the retail disk or system disks.
There are places you can by a copy of Mac OS X, like online vendors, Amazon or eBay.
System disk are gray and come with more than one disk. Retail disk are black with a 'X' on them and often come as one DVD disk.
Not sure what version your going to require as you haven't provided any specification and model details.
I would safely assume being a G4, it would be happy to install Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
If you could let us know the PowerBook you own, then I am sure we could advise you further.
    Best of luck

  • TouchSmart with no touch

    Hi :-)
Back in 2011 I bought this HP TouchSmart tm2 2190eo (nordic) notebook/tablet pc:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=da&cc=dk&dlc=da&sw_lang=&product=4315...
Unfurtunately, the finger touch and digitizer no longer works. Someday it just stopped working. :-(
All other parts of the pc work as usual, such as the finger print reader, the speakers and everything else.
But it just seems impossible to get that touch screen to work right. I have been searching the Internet for almost a month by now and still I have not found the right solution.
For many users it seems to be a problem with the "touch" cable which will get loose over time. Connecting the cable again by disassembling the screen has worked for the most or eventually buying a new cable. I have done both with no success. I bought three new cables over time and I even bought a new screen including the cover, speakers, wireless network antennas, finger print reader and so on. And still it does not work.
I have also been reflashing the BIOS and installed the drivers from the homepage I am linking to in the beginning of this post.
I have installed Windows 8.1 later and before that Windows 8. Normally Windows will install the screen for me. I even installed the factory image from DVD's which I bought afterwards from HP online. I then went back to Windows 7 with all the HP software (and crapware) and still the screen touch did not work.
Now I am back on Windows 8.1. I have been looking through Device Manager and there is nothing there which requires my attention. Everything seems fine. I had to install the Wacom drivers from the link to get the device listed in Device Manager. Otherwise there would not have appeared any touch device there except the mouse.
The touch function is not listed in the BIOS neither.
Do anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue? :-)
Do you think it may have something to do with the mainboard? Even though it does not look like the main board handles the touch function. Maybe I am wrong?

    Hello Ricki87,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
Looks like you have ruled everything out except for the system board, because the touch function is not listed in the BIOS that would further point to the system board. I have included the 'Maintenance and Service Guide', and if you go to page 60. It lists all the part numbers for the system boards that are known to work with your product.

  • Touch screen won't touch

I am not sure if this is the right group for this.
I purchased a touch screen desktop monitor L12341wt at Best Buy.  It was shipped because they were out of stock at that location.  It works fine except that it is not "touch."  In other words nothing happens when I try to swipe, etc.
I called them and they said it was an issue with Lenovo which mislabels their monitors with wrong model numbers, etc. They warned me that even if I have them replac e it with a rehsip, the same issue may occur.
I would be better off going back to Best Buy but it is two hours away.
    Any solution to this?
    Many thanks,.

The only download I can find at the moment is the User Guide:
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/monitor/li2341t_wide_flat_panel_monitor_ug.pdf
Out of curiosity, have you followed the cable connection / power-up sequence as shown on page C-2 exactly as described? Seems to be pretty specific in order to have the touchscreen recognized as a USB device.
Connect the cables and switch on power in the following order:
    • Connect the video cable from the computer to the monitor.
    • Connect power to the monitor and switch on.
    • Connect power to the computer and switch on.
    • Connect the USB cable from the touch screen to the computer. Once the cable is connected, the computer automatically detects the USB device (the touch screen) and, aftera short pause, displays a series of messages on screen.
    Hope this helps.

  • Touchsmart won't power up

I have a really nice HP TouchSmart 610q I bought a couple years ago that's been working great.  A couple days ago while playing a blue-ray disk, the computer suddenly powered down.  Ever since then it has flatly refused to power up.
After playing with it a bit I noticed that there appears to be some sort of fail-safe trigger that turns it off right away.  The power brick has a green light when I plug it into the wall.  When I plug the power brick into the computer, the internal green power light flashes on and then turns off.  When it turns off, the green light in the power-brick turns off too.  I can only reset the brick by unplugging it from the wall and waiting a few seconds.
I fear there is some hardware short somewhere.  Does this sound right, and how would I go about debugging this.  I've already removed the hard-drive but that didn't make a difference.  I may next try to remove the blue-ray player.

Actually, you already hit on the solution. It is more than likely the power brick. I have a 610-1280qd that had the same problem. The only way to reset the brick was to unplug and replug. After tolerating this for several months, I contacted HP as mine was still under waranty. They sent me a new one and I am now trouble free.

  • HP Pavilion 15-n241ca TouchSmart Notebook PC touch screen not working

I got this Notebook a couple of months ago at The Source in Alberta Canada. Worked fine for a week or so and then the touch screen began to stop working intermittently.
Once or twice it seemed that cleaning the (not dirty) screen helped but not anymore.
It has just stopped working completely for the past month or so.
I've tried glass cleaner on a napkin and on a microfiber cloth..all the way to the edges and nothing.
I've run all the troubleshooters, driver updates...everything is up to date and working properly or so they say.
    HELP?????????
    Thanks in advance
    This question was solved.

Thanks for the help. Wish I had asked sooner.
But...I went to the site's support chat and spoke to an HP service rep. He remotely diagnosed and tried to get mmy touch screen up and running but nothing would work. Ended up wiping my machine and trying from scratch. Still nothing.
My computer will be picked-up by UPS in a couple of days for a ride to the nearest service center. Evidently I'm having hardware problems.
So, my computer isnt working properly BUT HP's customer service sure is.
Everyone I spoke to there was just awesome and SO happy to help. Sounds like I'm being sarcastic but I'm NOT. First day was Gio(sp?) and yesterday it was Cory I believe the fellow's name was.
I'm in Canada, they are in the Philipines.
These guys were both so friendly and we chatted and laughed while we worked on my machine.
    They felt like old friends.
    Yesterday with Cory was hilarious.
He asks a few questions..in his professional voice...I let him know that the system restore didnt help and after a couple more questions he asked for my shipping address so that my notebook could be picked-up.  I spell-out my street address and name of course...I tell him the Town, then the province (Alberta) and dude BUSTS-OUT a "CANADA!!!!!  you're in CANADA!!!"   YES! Yes I AM in Canada!!!
You see, here in Canada and especially in Alberta (80% of all the NEW jobs in Canada are created in ALBERTA) there is a SERIOUS labor shortage. We import a lot of workers and a LOT are Philipinos. Many are great friends of mine. I am a musician as are a LOT of Philipinos (they are kinda like Mexicans...somehow SO MANY of them are GREAT singers. Like I mean SCARY good singers...and I met and was good friends with a bunch of Philipino musicians back in the early/mid '90s called the Manilla Boys -Shout Out to Freddie and Oscar).  and so ...I feel a kind of connection to the Philipines and it's people and obviously, a lot of Philipinos love Canada and Canadians.
WHY the rave about the Philipines? Well yes...I got a little sidetracked BUT...my POINT is that Westerners whine and complain about having to deal with any company's Customer Service centers. Sometimes justifiably so. You know, a lot of times you call to ask about an item and you're speaking to people in India (also have many Indian friends...this is NOT a bashing) or China or somewhere where they TRY to help but the language barrier is difficult to overcome. Tempers flare. People on both ends of the line or internet get frustrated....you know how it goes.
BUT...with HP, and I spoke to three different CS reps at LEAST, EVERYONE was VERY helpful. Everyone knew exactly what they were doing. They were patient. They were HAPPY. They spoke PERFECT English.
Were we able to get my machine...my touchscreen working again? Nope :-(
WILL my machine be working again soon? I hope so. MAYBE...IF the service center it goes to employs Philipino techs lol.
Like I told Gio, this is the FIRST factory built, name brand computer I've bought in over 10 years. My FIRST one was an Emachines and it worked flawlessly for YEARS. I just grew out of it. Since then I have been buying from small outfits or I have pieced-together my own machines.
I'm SO glad I chose an HP machine this time.
I didnt even need to produce a receipt (which I have and would have been able to). Gio remotely logged-into my notebook and find all the info he needed.  There was one point where I said something like..."oh no. Well do you think maybe The Source has a replacement policy or something?" and Gio replied..."oh you don't have to worry about that. I see here that you have full warranty coverage (I did not purchase any extended warranties when I bought the notebook) until March of next year.
So again...my experience with HP's Customer Service was phenomenal EVERYtime I called or chatted with them. Gio performed every diagnostic test in the book. He uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. He troubleshot. He tried this and he tried that. He gave me GREAT instructions. We did a complete system restore.
Once that did not fix the problem they immediately sent me a UPS box to return my machine in. I didnt have to complain or argue or ask or demand. Once the restore didnt work THEIR next thing was to get my machine in for service.
Between you and me I'm hoping that there is something SERIOUSLY wrong and maybe they'll send me a NEW notebook and maybe it will be the next model UP!  Yeah yeah I know...wishful thinking. But hey..my Son's iPod broke down a couple years ago and Apple (whos CS was ALSO amazing...at least it was a couple years ago) sent him a replacement. The NEXT generation of iPod!!
My Wife's Samsung Note 2 started dropping..well not receiving calls. Samsung had her send it to the nearest service center. It worked fine for a day and then started not receiving calls again. Samsung graciously (kind of) said...ok this ONE TIME ONLY we will send it to a service center AGAIN.
They did and it dint work..again. Clearly they were just doing a hard factory reset...which my Wife had already tried a bunch of times. She kinda gave-up on Samsung and said...you know...I think I'm gonna go back to Apple. Their CS was SO much BETTER than Samsung's.
But the next day (like 2 weeks ago) she spoke to Telus, her cell provider and explained that her phone wasnt working and that she has been a loyal Telus customer for decades. That her monthly bill (for 3 phones..mine, hers and our Son's) is like almost $200 (yeah we live in an isolated place). She said that when her contracts are fulfilled she will be going with a different (cheaper) provider and to a different phone. Btw...all 3 of us currently own Samsung droid phones.
Welllll...Telus took the wheel and said...Don't worry m'aam.  There is no authorized service center in your town so just go back to where you purchased the Note2. We just called them and they are expecting you. They are ready to replace your phone. Just bring the Note2 in for a trade-in.
She goes to the store and they say...pick any new phone. It's on Telus.
They didnt have the S5 in stock but she prefers the larger notes anyway so she walked-out with a brand new Samsung Note3 :-)
The moral of the story is that these days most companies' Customer Service is VERY GOOD. HP is NO exception.
My HP hardware has some issues so I wouldnt be able to rate their products as EXCEPTIONAL but their CS? That is MORE than EXCEPTIONAL.
If YOU are in the market for a new computer, DONT HESITATE if an HP is in your sights. You are in GREAT hands with HP. I will recommend HP to EVERYONE.
My computer is not working properly. I will be without while it's away (it would be SUPER nice if they had a loaner policy but..hopefully turn-around time will be SHORT) but hopefully I wont be without for TOO long and who knows...MAYBE they will have to replace my whole notebook and if they do, maybe they'll upgrade me to the next model. Wishful thinking AGAIN I know but either way...I KNOW I'll have a properly working computer again before too long.
THANK YOU Hewlett Packard. And ESPECIALLY Thank You Gio!! And Cory too...AND the others whos names I dont recall because our time was very short.
I'm SO glad I chose HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. I dont think I've ever been THIS glad to have a broken product. Lol.
Thank you for your replies and suggestions. I think this thread (without THIS lengthy post) will be helpful to many people who have touchscreen problems in the future.  Let's just hope that "many people" wont NEED help and wont HAVE touchscreen issues.

  • Pavilion Touchsmart won't boot after resizing partition

I have a Pavilion 14-n228ca on which I will primarily run Linux. So I followed the procedure I have used in the past to create a dual-boot system on XP and Vista systems, viz.
    - resize the NTFS filesystem on the primary Windows partition
    - delete the partition
    - recreate the partition with the exact same start byte but a smaller size matching the resized filesystem
    - create a new partition in the free space
    - install Linux (CentOS 6.5) in the new parition, which also installs GRUB in the MBR and creates a chain record to the original Windows partition. Normally, that lets me choose to boot either a Linux kernel or Windows.
Linux runs when I boot the disk (notebook hard drive). I can mount all the Windows NTFS partitions and see the data. But I still want to occasionally run Windows. I believe it is version 8.1.
When I try to boot the Windows partition from GRUB, I get windows boot manager: file \Boot\BCD - missing or contains errors If I try "OS Boot Manager" after pressing F9 at boot, I get a "trying to repair" splash screen which fails then drops to a repair menu.
If I select command line, I get a working prompt but the normal Windows volume is not mounted.
If I run "diskpart" I see all the disk partitions but the Windows volume has no drive letter. diskpart says the partition is valid.
If I assign a drive letter and exit diskpart, I can then see the files in F: and run chkdsk which reports that the filesystem is OK.
If I run "rstrui" it says "could not find offline boot volume"
If I run "bootrec /scanos" it finds a valid volume \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HardDiskVolume4\Windows
If I run "bootrec /rebuildbcd" it says "system cannot find the file specified"
I tried booting before actuially installing Linux, so I presume the problem is to do with the partition name or something, not the MBR.
How can I recover the BCD, or otherwise boot Windows, preferably without messing up the Linux installation ?

    Hello adaviel,
I have read your post on how your notebook computer will not boot after resizing the partition in Linux, and I would be happy to guide you towards a resolution!

  • How to temporarily disable the touch screen in Windows 8? Touchsmart 320-1122la

Meanwhile, read this document to see if it offers any solutions:HP TouchSmart PCs - Troubleshooting Touch Screen Issues in Windows 8

Sorry that document didn't help. As for how to find your product and numbers, on my HP TouchSmart 320-1030, for example, I found both numbers on a sticker on the back of my PC, near the bottom, just under the inputs (USB, power, etc.). I also found that information in roughly the same area on my friend's HP ENVY TouchSmart 23-d034. A really easy way to find out is to press the CTRL, ALT, and S keys. The HP Support Information box will open, showing your model number, product number, serial number, and other important information. I used Snipping Tool to take a screen capture of this information on my screen, and then I printed it and emailed it to myself. It's good information to have on hand if you're getting support, making warranty inquiries, or for your insurance files, if your PC were, say, damaged in a fire, tornado, etc. Once you obtain that information, go to the Drivers and Download page. Click the Support and Drivers button, and enter your product number.  Check for new drivers for your product. You can also get support and warranty information at the above link.

    Hi @xAndre ,
Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to help.
I grasp that your touchscreen is not responding.  When I checked the specifications for the HP ENVY 15t-j100 Quad Edition CTO Notebook PC support , I do not see that you have a touchscreen.  I know this is a CTO notebook so did you specifically order one?
Here is a link to  HP TouchSmart PCs - Troubleshooting touch screen issues in Windows 8.

  • How do I disable journaling on an external drive that won't mount?

I'm trying to fix a hard drive that gives me the "Invalid content in journal" error. I've run the latest TechTool and Drive Genius and they say the drive is fine, except for its crippling inability to actually mount. Onyx and Cocktail won't touch it until its mounted. Ideas?

It's possible to recover files using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.

  • After update to iOS 7.1, iPhone 4 won't work. Stuck in recovery mode. Won't restore.

    Hello,
So I'm pretty baffled at this point. Last night I started downloading the iOS 7.1 update as my iPhone 4 was plugged into iTunes. The update did not complete on my phone. Instead, the dreaded "Connect to iTunes" logo appeared. After researching last night and again this morning, I have not found a solution.
When I plug my phone into iTunes, this message appears: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." Then, I have the option to restore iPhone.
So, having come to terms that I will lose all data - luckily my photos and videos have all been uploaded to my computer - I began restoring it. As it's downloading, this message then appears:
I've read through the "More Information" page several times. Checked my host file, added the "# " in front of the gs.apple.com IP address, restarted the computer, and still no luck. I haven't tried updating or restoring on another computer yet, but I have a feeling that won't change anything - I've read other people's accounts and that step just didn't work.
I updated my iTunes to the lastest version and restarted. Nothing.
I downloaded tinyumbrella and RecBoot to try and exit the apparent recovery mode. This didn't work. I have tried numerous times restarting the phone (holding down the home button and power button) with different variations of unplugging the USB from my laptop, letting go of the home button when the Apple logo appears, holding down the + volume button along with the power button, etc.
Does anyone know what I should do? Would calling Apple help? Or would going in person to an Apple store be better? Would they replace my phone? I don't see how this can be resolved unless the Geniuses have a universal restart method that bypasses everything. I need my phone for work and would be okay with just restoring the phone. Note: My phone has not been jailbroken.
Really hope someone can help. I would greatly appreciate it...
    Thank you!

The fact that gs.apple.com was in your host file to begin with is an indicator that your computer was used to jailbreak or hack an iOS device at some point in the past. You can not get help here for a hacked or jailbroken device. If your phone was hacked or jailbroken, Apple won't touch it.
RecBoot and Tinyumbrella are hacking tools.
    Google "iPhone DFU mode".
Try restoring in DFU mode. If that doesn't fix it, make an appointment at the genius bar and see what Apple has to say about it.

  • ITunes won't let me move ringtone to iPhone

    Hi all,
My Mom has recently upgraded her iMac.  Since then, she has wanted to put a new ringtone on her iPhone.  I've tried to walk her through the steps (creating the .m4r, etc.) and she wasn't able to do it.  So, since I happen to be over for the holidays, I thought I would give it a go.  And now, I have found out why she's got problems... but I don't know the solution.
I've checked on the "Tones" tab on the iPhone listed on the left side of iTunes and I noticed that the "Synch Tones" was not checked.  So, I checked it.  And now, this is the message I'm getting:
"The iPhone “XX XX’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."  (Cancel) or (Erase and Synch) are the two options.
Now, there is no music on the iPhone (it's all saved on the iTouch and Nano) but there are about 300 photos.  If I choose (Erase and Synch) will I lose anything from the iPhone or from iTunes?  My guess is no... and that it won't touch the photos on the iPhone.  My guess is that it won't erase anything (as there is no music to erase on the iPhone), but that it will transfer the entire iTunes Library onto the iPhone (which I don't want to do either, but I can remove that, I assume).
Can someone varify for me that clicking on the (Erase and Synch) will NOT delete the iPhone photos?  I know they're backed up somewhere, but I'm just trying to figure this out for her before I leave.
Thanks very much and Happy 2013!
    ...Stacy

A reply to an old problem, but I couldn't find this solution anywhere. I had the same problem when I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. As Apple recommends, I used File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy my music files from my overstuffed hard drive to the external drive. Copying went fine for a while, adding about two-thirds of my files to the new drive without incident. Then I got the big stop sign with the error message: "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
This turned out to have nothing to do with either the hard drive or the external disk. I had a bad file in my music library that was shutting down the consolidation process. Unfortunately the error message says nothing about which file may be the culprit. All I could think to do was to go back to my original library in iTunes and sort by Artist, select all cuts with artists beginning with A, right click and select "Consolidate Files". Then do the same with B artists, etc. Proceeding this way, files resumed copying but when I got to the "S" selections, the consolidate process failed again. Then I selected smaller and smaller batches until the problem file was identified. Removed it from my library and then Consolidate worked fine through the rest of the library. Problem solved.
I spent several days working through this; hope I can save someone else the time.

  • Windows 7 Pro 64 bit - WIA service won't stay "on"

I have to install a Brother AIO printer/scanner using a network connection.  Using a brand new Acer Veriton X275 with 4gB RAM, new HDD, built in graphics card.
The printer driver went in, it prints.  The scanner though isn't working.  Brother (the AIO manufacturer) looked at it and said the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service" is broken and you need to get that fixed first.  When we investigated
it, the service is set to "Auto" but remains stopped.  We can go to the service and "Start" it but 15-20 seconds later it's stopped with no error or any other symptom.  The two dependencies (RPC & Shell Hardware Detect) are already confirmed
    on and running.
Since we just took this out of the box two days ago, I'm surprised I have no support from Microsoft and I'm going to have to pay for phone support.  Acer won't touch it because they say it's a Windows problem.  They only cover the hardware during
    the warranty period.
    Two questions:
If true, what do you experts suggest we try to ensure that WIA stays on?
Is what I'm told about and have read on the 'net about Microsoft's phone support correct?
    H

I had to finally break down and call MS and pay for this one...
The WIA service stays off until called for.  In most cases, it stays off until a program or another service calls it.  This behavior is as programmed and as expected.
And why don't they tell you this...?  Anyway:
