Tracking progress in Project Server 2013

Hi,
What is the difference between the two operations:
TIMESHEET > Send > Send Progress for Selected Tasks
and
TASKS > Send Status >Selected Tasks
Thanks

Hi Robert,
The timesheet will be sent including the administrative time to the timesheet manager of the resource. Depending on your configuration, either the timesheet manager can be picked up from a predefined list of users or it could be an attribute of the resource.
The task updates will be sent to the status managers who is by default the project plan owner (this can be changed). Approving this update will also update the project plan with the actual work.

    Hi,
Import task progress feature in Project Server 2013:
I have updated actuals in tasks page in PWA 2013, and saved it. I tried to import it to timesheet page but the value already exists and the import task progress option is greyed out. i mean, when i enter actuals in tasks page and save it, the value automatically
comes in timesheet page, then what is the use of Import task progress.
    Am i understood correctly?
    Please help.

  • Project Server 2013: Project progress task available to only assigned resources.

I have a project in project server 2013. In that I am preparing the project plan. Now I want that only the respective person to whom I have assigned the task can modify the % complete. Not even the owner can edit it.

Project owner can modify the the plan either from PWA or from MPP.
As far as % complete is concerned for assignment only Resource who will be assigned to the task can fill the actual for the task either from Task page or from Timesheet page if Single Entry Mode is enabled. No one else can fill the actual for the task from
Timesheet page and task page. AS assignment will be available to the only that resource who is assigned to the task.
But Project owner can do the modify the project plan any time either from MPP or from PWA you can not restrict him/her. But as far as % complete is concerned do the setting
To prevent the project manager from updating a team member's actual time worked, select the Only allow task updates via Tasks and Timesheets check box. it will be
available on server setting --> Task setting and display

  • Project Server 2013 for Resource Planning & Project Portfolio Management

We are looking to  use project server 2013 for resource and project portfolio management.  We are an IT department of approximately 600 growing to 1,000 within the next several years.
We would like to us PS2013 to do the following :
    Manage Portfolio of Projects
    Manage Resources against this Portfolio
Calculate Project Finances using resource roles and rates
I would be grateful to have both comments on experience , both positive and negative.
    Thank You

Many teams within organizations are turning to Project Server to help them control resources, deliverables and costs better.    It does resource management very well with work & cost resources, baseline costs, material costs, budget costs and
out of the box earned value analysis (EV).  The Strategy (portfolio) component is very powerful and it will help you identify project that align to your objects then do what if analysis to find the right mix of projects.
Here are a couple of things you should think about when moving to PS2013:
    1) Who will be using the tool?  If it is a mix of onsite staff, remote staff, vendors, contractors etc. you may want to think about a hosted solution.
    2) Training.  Don't assume everyone will just magically 'know' how to use the tool.  Train everyone (team members, PMs, Executives) then train them again.  It's the only way to truly get the value out of the tool.
    3) Who will manage the system?  This is not a typical application.  The right administrator needs SharePoint, Project Server, SQL Server,  MS Project, Analysis Services and SQL Report writing skills.  Please note that much of this can
be learned by the right person but DEFINITELY find the right person.
    4) Don't start customizing right out of the box.  You will get frustrated.  Adjust your organization to the tool early on.  I know that is easier said than done but you need a realistic approach to get tool acceptance moving early.
    5) Use workflows but don't use them right out of the gate.  Workflows are great but I suggest you wait until phase 2 or 3 to start aligning them to your business processes.
    6) Lastly and most importantly, you must first establish your own business processes THEN  align them to the tool.  DO NOT assume the tool will create business process for you.  You must think about how you are going to initiate a project,
how are you going to track deliverables, how will time sheets be managed, etc.  Get to a whiteboard, crack open Visio and start building and establishing your processes now.  PS 2013 is pretty flexible and usually will align well with existing business
    processes.
And don't forget to hire a good consultant.  They can be brought in during key phases of your roll-out to add value, help you avoid risks, and provide you with best practice advice.
    Good luck.

  • Project Server 2013 - Approved Tasks not applied to Project Schedule

Environment Details: Microsoft Project Server 2013 SP1
When an Resource completes a tasks within the Task or Timesheet page at the end of each day, the tasks is routed to the Project Owner for approval. The Project Owner (Project Manager) approves the task. During this process no errors are displayed.
When the Project Owner (Project Manager) goes into the Project Professional 2013 client to view how the project is progressing, and update the project completion date, the updates is not applied to the project.
This worked for some time, but has recently stopped working with no changes made to the environment. Any help would be great, as our project manager's are manually updating the tasks prior to approving them so they can report back on the project each week.

    Hello ProjMgrMatt
Sounds pretty serious, but I think something is missing somewhere.
Make sure that the Status Manager field is the same as the Project Owner.
Check to queue to be sure that nothing is stuck and waiting.
Create a new project, publish, submit, approve, etc and see if it still happens.
    Cheers!.

  • Is BaseLining mandatory for Tracking Gantt in Project Server ?

    Hello all,
I am new to Project Sever and I am feeling a bit uncomfortable with the usage of baselines. I just want a simple implementation where I will have my own custom defined Actual Task Start and Actual Task Finish to track the tasks. But is it possible to have
a Tracking gantt chart using these custom fields in PWA ?
I found no OOTB options to set the dates to be looked for tracking in the gantt customization.
Please update me with this. If there is no other way, then I will go ahead with the Baselines.
    Thanks,
    Shanky

    Hello Guillaume Rouyre,
The requirement in my case is that the engineers are allowed to enter tasks at a later point of stage in the project lifecycle.
ie., Say the Engineer creates 2 tasks with
    T1 & T2   :   Start: 1/2/2015      and   Finish 28/2/2015
Now the manger saves the "Baseline"
Now say the engineer updates these tasks with actuals as
    T1 & T2  :  Start: 5/2/205        and            Finish: 5/3/2015
Now the manager can see the Tracking gantt, the difference between the planned and actuals on the gantt chart.
But say, at this point of time the engineer adds 2 more tasks with say date
    T3 & T4 : Start: 5/3/2015    and Finish: 30/3/2015.
Now these 2 tasks are not saved in "Baseline", hence the manager wont be able to track these tasks on the gantt chart. For this the manager has to set another baseline, "Baseline1" and if the engineer changes the dates for the last 2
tasks there after, the manager is unable to track these 2 tasks in the Tracking gantt chart, as the tracking gantt chart shows just the difference with the "Baseline" dates (But these 2 last added tasks are not a part of the Baseline, but are a part
of Baseline1). Until and unless I save all the tasks into a single baseline, I am unable to view all the tasks on the tracking gantt chart in Tracking View.
When I checked in the forums, I saw something about Interim Plan, where the manager can save temporarily these baselines and then combine it. But to my surprise I am unable to find that "Interim Plan" in Project Server 2013 PWA.
So is there a way that, the manager must be able to track all the tasks added by the engineer at any point of time in the project lifecycle through the "Tracking gantt charts" ?

  • Project Server 2013 - Workflow Execution " Submit button is grayed out. "

    Dear All,
As i was in progress to making workflows in sharepoint designer this is my first project of implementing project server 2013 and executing the workflows,in the continuation of this i followed below mentioned link to go through the process of WORKFLOWS but
    got some issue
    LINK: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/jj163494(v=office.15)
ISSUE: Is that the SUBMIT Button is grayed out after saving initial proposal plan. Snapshot is attached.
I have checked in/out process along with this gone through re-executed the whole process same result occurred.
    Suggestion/Help needed...
    REGARDS DANISH DANIE

    Hi Danish,
Its a common thing which users are experiencing.
When you create project from workflow click on Submit it take time for transition before transition it check all the condition which you have set for workflow stage. As per your screenshot it is waiting for details in PDP (Provide details of the proposed project)
when you click on submit it push data into the database, sometimes it send e mails to stakeholder then it use exchange and take times to send e-mails and for transition too.
When you/user face this issue ask them to wait for some time or close the file then reopen.
In the screen workflow is waiting for Project detail information in PDP that is why it is still in process and not going to next stage.

  • Task Status in Project Server 2013

    Hello,
I was wondering if someone could give me an overview of the Task Status options in Project Server 2013? I am a current 2010 user but we have not been able to use this feature in the past. Specifically, I am wondering:
    1. Can I assign an entire task to a user? In 2010 I had to assign resources to a task and then update each assignment. I want to be able to assign the entire task and have the user tell me the Physical % Complete, Actual Start, and Actual Finish at the task
    level.
    2. Is there any kind of built in what-if analysis feature? Can a program manager review the impact of the submitted status before accepting?
    Thanks,
    Jessica
    Jessica Hancock

    Hi Jessica,
Basically, task statusing and timesheeting has not changed between 2010 and 2013 versions. The first would be about the need (or not) to activate the Single Entry Mode, meaning a single interface for task statusing and timesheet. This DO matters since in
case you activate it, the task tracking method will be forced to "hours of work done per period". See in this
    blog the others methods.
1- From the PM's point of view, you can in MS Project Pro or PWA assign one or more resources to a single tasks, creating then the corresponding number of assignments. From there, each single user assigned on this task will have to enter his own tracking
on his assignment. As you'll see in the blog, the % physical cannot be entered by the team member, only the % complete if the 1st method is chosen.
2- About this what-if analysis, the PM can click in the approval center on the "preview updates" before accepting or rejecting. He will be able to vizualise what will his project plan look like in case he approves the task updates versus what does
his plan actually look likes. See reference
    here.
    Hope this helps,

  • Error while creating a Timesheet - Project Server 2013

    Hi everyone,
One of user of PWA encounters an issue when he tries to create a timesheet. This error only occurs with a timesheet of
a specific period, he can create all the other timesheet.
So, when he creates the timesheet, this error occurs : "The timesheet creation failed, because of problems with Project Web App or with data validations"
After reloaded the list of the timesheets, a link to go to the specific timesheet
is available but if we click on it, we have this error :
"View Failue - The view failed to load"
I think , this error occurs
because the timesheet is not realy existing even if we have a link to it.
In the log (full log at the end), I've got this error :
Exception occured in method 'TimeSheet.CreateTimesheet' System.ArgumentException: These columns don't currently have unique values.
I've found this link with the same kind of problem :

user project but still have the error.
Have you got any idea where are these columns ? How can I found them without checked every project of PWA ?

  • Task custom field and formula custom field don't correspond Project Server 2013

Hi people, I have an interesting case in Project Server 2013 SP1 CU Apr:
I have a custom task number field called AM. This field get's filled by a PSI action with actual material costs from an external system.
I also have a custom task cost formula field that is called AM*. This field is a formula field that has the formula [AM]. And summary tasks use the formula field as well.
As soon as I create a project, assign costs in the external system and let PSI fill the values within AM I get correct values in AM. But nothing is calculated on AM*. If I edit the project in the browser and publish, check in and revisit the project
    AM* still isn't filled.
If I open the project in MS Project Pro the calculation comes through nicely, however I do not want to use MS project Pro to see correct data in browser.
Some tests I have already done:
I have noticed that when I create a new calculated task field AM2*, this get's calculated correctly on the already existing task.
I have also noticed that opening the custom field in server settings and just saving the field creates correct values on AM*.
What is going on? I don't want to save the custom formula field every day... There are 11 custom formula fields in the environment at the moment.

    Hi Gary,
Thank you for the quick response. Please note that the fieldnames are [AM] and [AM*]. There is a difference in field name due to the astrix. However I did think about the situation and changing one of the field names all together didn't do anything for the
    situation at hand.
It looks like some kind of refresh thing, because without changing anything in the custom field just saving the field in server settings will turn op good values. However, values already turned up good in Project Professional 2013. And that suggest
that there is a calculation error on the PWA side wouldn't you say?
Anyway, thank you for taking time to look into this matter.
    Erik

  • Project Server 2013 - This webpart was unable to load

    Hi all,
I am getting the following error in project server 2013 project sites:
This webpart was unable to load. For more information, please contact your server administrator.
    <Guid>
I only get this error message on 'Project Summary Web Part'.
Any idea what it could be?
    Thank you,
    SJ

    Hi there!
I got similar problem in a PDP that was working perfectly even after migration to 2013. On this case, my PDP was showing the webpart that let you to choose what fields and custom fields want to show on a specific PDP.
I created a copy of the crashed PDP and got the same error. So I bet for remove all the custom fields and add one by one to see what happens. The surprise came up when it started to work when my PDP had just pair of custom fields. With this procedure,
I found that the problem was on some specific custom fields created that had null values to all the projects created before. Once I forced value on those fields it worked properly!!
Sometimes EPM2013 has a very strange behavioural and in some cases just clicking on EDIT and SAVE  without any change have solved some of my problems too.
I hope it helps this to you and feel free to contact me if I can somehow help you :)

  • Can't open Project Server 2013 word documents with office 2010 installed

    hello forum members,
we having issues opening a word document in a Project Server 2013 . we have Office 2010 on our computers installed.
when I click on a document link, i get a message "The webpage cannot be displayed".  the only way to open a document is to right click on link and select "Open".
Does Project Server 2013 require Office 2013 installed? If not, is there a way to open documents in Project Server 2013 without right clicking on links?
    tatiana
    tatiana

    Hi Tatiana,
This is the know issue. I have experienced this issue with one of our client. The cause of issue as below -
    Scenario
You have 2007 Microsoft Office installed on a computer.
On the same computer, you also have a Microsoft Office 2013 application installed, such as Microsoft Lync 2013 or Microsoft Word 2013.
    SOLUTION
To work around this issue, remove the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support program component from the Office 2013
installation on the affected computer or computers. To do this, follow the “Install or remove individual Office program components” section of the following Microsoft Office website:
    Install or remove individual Office
    programs and components
    (http://office.microsoft.com/redir/HA010354261.aspx)
After you complete these steps, repair 2007 Office. For more information about how to repair the installation, click
the following article number to go to the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    924611
    (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924611/ )
How to install the individual 2007 Office features or to repair the installed 2007 Office programs
    Note When
you follow these steps, set the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support
component within Office Tools to Not Available.
This solution doesn't apply to scenarios in which SharePoint Designer 2013 is installed on the affected computer.
You can find further details here at Microsoft support site -
