Urgent: International call charges

Just a quick question, for anybody who may know;
Does BT charge me to receive a call from abroad?
The missus has been on the phone for over an hour to a friend in New Zealand, I've tried to find my answer on Google, but haven't really came across anything definitive.
If BT do charge me to receive calls from abroad, could someone tell me how much they charge?
Thanks in advance.

it doesn't cost you to receive calls on home phone from abroad unless you agree a reverse charge call

  • International Calling charges $2.50 per minute

I used the *611 tool to add international calling to my plan. It was super easy but I've been financially assaulted with charges. Here's how things transpired:
    1) Dialed *611 and stepped through the options, some via key strokes and verbal direction, ultimately I added international calling to my plan.
         a. At no point in this process was I prompted by the automated system of my potential charges; I was not advised of them via email or text either. I      thought that was strange but, unfortunately, moved on with my day without follow-up.
    3) Approximately 1 week later I called my friend in Australia and spoke approximately 60 minutes.
    4) Bill arrives: $237.55. It's normally $74.51. A 218% increase!
    5) Called customer service (spoke with Anthony) on 3/17/15. Was advised that I was charged $2.50/minute for my international call plus taxes!!
    6) 3/20/15 Anthony called me back, as he was granted approval to provide me with a $30 credit. Anthony provided excellent service and support by demonstrating kindness, listening and follow-thru, and I say this NOT because I was provided a credit, but because he truly was pleasant to work with.
My grievance is in regards to what I feel are deceptive practices: no confirmation of charges upon adding international calling via *611, nor was a confirmation email or text sent to my attention. Why? Can this be improved?
My requests: more thorough advisement to your international calling customers when making the *611 tool as accessible as it is. Sure, I like ease and keeping it simple, but I don't like the lack of communication that I was provided and the outrageous charge. On behalf of myself, current and future customers, I ask that you review this particular feature within the *611 tool.
I've taken my lessons from this process and I ask that you consider my circumstance so to improve the customer service experience.
    Thank you.

I know International charges can add up fast, jai4. I'm sorry the automated process was not clear of charges. All of the International plans, options and rates are available online here:  http://www.verizonwireless.com/landingpages/long-distance/  Since the services were used, we're unable to issue more credits. Again, I'm really sorry!   VanessaS_VZW

  • Using Whatsapp  to call incurred international roaming charges

Please permit me to introduce myself
    Account Number: [removed]
    Executive summary:
I used an Iphone App called Whatsapp that allows users to exchange online messages and even calling. I used that app to make an app to app call to a friend in India.
And I was shocked to see that Verizon has billed all the talk time to international roaming and the bill is a HUGE amount close to $775
    Issue in detail
    Total minutes talked - 296
Billed - $775+ (at international roaming rate $2.30/minute)
    Please consider the following facts
-I used Whatsapp to talk to Iphone app to app call
-I had called same Whatsapp number in india
-A few times all happened with in a month/same billing cycle
-First time it happened in my history with Verizon
-I don't have  international plan so I did not know my cell phone can make international calls through Verizon (Have never made one via cell phone/verizon)
-I have no way of knowing that this is being charged to my account until I see the bill (I saw and reported this within a week of the ebill date)
-The app clearly says this //Using WhatsApp while your phone is connected to Wi-Fi should not incur charges from your carrier. Please note that some Wi-Fi networks may have charges or usage fees.//
    http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/iphone/20970433
Please consider the following as a LOYAL verizon customer
    - 15 year LOYAL verizon mobile customer (customer since 2000 since I landed in the US)
    - Never left Verizon , not even once
    - Always paid my bill on time (automatic payments)
    - Have converted MANY customers from other carriers to Verizon
In this background I would humbly request you to put yourself in my shoes and see this issue as a mistake/software glitch which I had no way of knowing until I see the bill.
I request you to do the needful to see it as what it is , a mistake , that was not done by me but a software of which I have no knowledge of.
Being a long standing LOYAL Verizon customer , I beseech you to do the right thing and reverse all the charges related this incident.
Following is the log of my efforts to work with Verizon customer support
Dates called April 5th 1 hr
    April 6 - 4 hrs
    Ian did the right thing
He converted the calls to regular international long distance from 2.39/min to 29 cents a minute , convenience plan.
I agreed and he said its waiting on supervisor's approval which is 24 hrs.
I called again April 7 I was told it might take 48 to 42 hrs
I called again on April 10 and I was told the supervisor did not approve.
I spoke to many and finally reached Ms.Brooke  who introduced herself as the top most supervisor in the building (Employee [removed],Kentucky call center)

    Hi JJKAY,
The EXACT same thing took place for my wife. She used the WhatsApp to make calls and it ended up going to a number in Turkey. Verizon sent NO Alerts at all that this would be International charge OUTSIDE of our International calling plan.
My wife made calls using the SAME app to Mexico and it went through without charges.
We have also been customer for numerous years.
I called Verizon to see how this occurred and got the technical folks, who first told me as they told you, they could change to the Global plan and then pay a reduced $/min. However, then the supervisor stepped in and would not approve.
Verizon seems to think they have no responsibility to send ALERTS or allow for ALERTS when it goes well beyond the ordinary.
Did you get Verizon to provide a credit as a customer?
I would like to know, as I am about to switch and then make this a case of Verizon and show how much they care about customer retention. Thanks in advance.

  • Roaming charges for incoming international calls?

That's pretty much my question. I read somewhere on here that I would NOT be charged for long distance or roaming if my IPhone 5 receives incoming calls from Germany. Before I tell my family that they can call me, I want to be absolutely sure of that.
    Thanks for your help!

Just like a landline, an incoming international call will not have any add'l charges. But it will use minutes from your allotment, unless it is after 9pm (Or 7pm if you have an Alltel plan)
    UPDATE: From VZW Website:
If someone calls me internationally from outside the U.S. will I be charged extra?
No, you won't be charged long distance or roaming fees if you're in the U.S and someone calls you from outside the U.S.

  • Could facetime be used for international calls and free of charge???

Could facetime be used for international calls and free of charge???
Or does it work the same way as any other 2G calls???

For the iphone 4, I believe that have to do a initial voice call first (if it's not in your recent call list), and then start the live video chat (facetime). I could be wrong but if you have no recent call history with facetime, you would have to start a voice call again, and then immediately switch to facetime to prevent international cost. I haven't tried this so I would not now, but I only assume that if you don't have him/her on the recent list with facetime.

  • IMessage and Facetime Activation charges with an international call

    Hi there,
my mobile provider charged me for two international calls, which i thought i didn't make. I live in germany and the calls were made to a number in the united kingdom. So i did some research and could narrow it down to the configuration of my new iPhone 4s. I could recreate the international call: it seems that the iPhone 4s calls the uk number to activate the iMessage and the Facetime services.
Why is that so? The iMessage and Facetime activation on my iPad worked just fine over wifi without any extra costs.
I don't mind the 58 cent those calls cost me, but I'm a little bit ****** about the fact, that it was charged without any warning or notice.
Why isn't the activation possible over wifi or at least 3G?
    Thanks, bye.

    Hi,
I have the same problem! How can it be that after I changed my AppleID password, iMessage is deactivated and needs to be activated again?? For another 50 cents!! Like you said, it's just a few cents, but it's still annoying if you have to pay everytime you change your password!!
I hope Apple can fix this soon!
    Cheers.

  • Have international block on and still charged for international calls?

Hello -- I've international call block switched ON my account from April. Couple of customer reps confirmed and even today when I called they confirmed that international call block is switched ON for my line.  My daughter plays around with my phone and unfortunately we got a bill of $350 for June even though international call feature is disabled. What does international call disable means? Any one have same issue?

I got this new iphone 5s as a gift a week days ago, and It was working all great for 2-3 days. But from last 4days i AM not able to make international calls
Whenever I dial, I can't hear any ring going on and all I can hear is my own voice reverting back to me. Moreoever I am being charged for every call I make. I tried restarting my device, Also by connecting to itunes to find if any Update is needed but it says my iOS7 is recent no updates needed.
    Urgent help needed
    Thanks in advance.

A call is a call so far as the phone is concerned. Internation or across the street, it doesn't diferentiate between them.

I changed my data plan from 6g to 8g while my daughter who attends college outside of the US at Toronto Canada (and we have on a international calling and international data plan) was on spring break at her grandparents house here in the US. I made the change online since I had been waiting on the phone for over 10 minutes for a customer service rep to come available. Well when I made the change online since that seems to be the thing that Verizon wants it's customers to do and I didn't see all the different plans available and just did the upgrade to 8g. Next bill had over $900 in roaming charges on her phone line. I called the 1-800 number and waiting for a service rep and after 20 minutes of waiting and being put on hold was told it was the customers mistake and there was nothing they could do.Thanks for nothing. I called back after thinking about it and wondered why changing a data plan for the phones in the US would change a international call plan. Waiting over 10 minutes again between waiting for a service rep and hold for one to answer the call. Gave her all the information about it and she said she would call back. Well, 4 days later over the weekend she had nevered called back. So on the phone again for the third time and after 20 plus minutes again was told that when I did it online I click the plan that didn't include international call only the data plan. Explained that I never saw the difference in the plan packages so put on hold again and was told that they could credit $100 to my bill. Wow, thanks alot !!! We have been Verizon customers for probably atleast 12 years and this is how you treat your long term customers?

  • International Calls Made to Me

So this was random...at 3:45 am this morning I was woken up by the ringing of my iPhone, only to discover that it was a wrong number, from abroad!
It led to this question- I assume minutes would be used for accepting an International call while in the US, but would I be charged extra $$ too?

It should not, you just use you regular min. and at 3:45 should be under nights and weekends (if you have it) so you should not have been charged anything. ATT also has it so your phone has to be unlocked to make internatal calls(well when it was cingular you did) you just call *611 and say you want outgoing international to be alowed form your phone.

  • OWA for Iphone and international calling card

    Hello,
I work as the Supervisor for a company that has just purchased many iphones.  The group that is in charge of email at my company will only allow "OWA for Iphone" to be used because in this way, nothing is downloaded to the device.  All email, calendar entries and contacts/people entries are web based.  Because nothing is downloaded to the device, the Iphone app for any international calling card company like Reliance or True Roots will not work.
When I say, "will not work" this is why.  All international calling card companies apps that I have found, access the local downloaded contacts on the Iphone itself.  I have not found any that can connect to the people in the  "OWA for Iphone" app to make international calls for cheeper prices.
Is there an international calling card company whose app will work with "OWA for Iphone" and not the locally stored contacts?  Or one that I can make the choice, choose the contacts from the local Iphone and or people in the "OWA for Iphone" app?

International calling apps allow you to call an entry from your contact list.  When you make a call from your device using this International calling app it will hang up, dial a 1 800 or 1866 number, then redial the international number you dialed and complete the call.  This allows you to call for example, India for $.06/minute instead of $.50/minute or what ever your provider charges you.  It basically make it so your international calls go through your international calling app provider instead of your phone provider.  You still use your phone provider minutes, but the cost is rerouted to your international calling provider/partner.
    1. I know, its so hard to do anything.  Yes all smartphones (Iphones, Androids, Windows, etc...)  The email admins will not allow anything to directly download to the device from the company.  The OWA for IPhone app uses the web browser but changes the view of the email to look and feel user friendly.  Basically, OWA for Iphone is using the web to look at all email, contacts, and calendar entries.
    2. The international calling app (Reliance and all others I have found including Skype) will only look at local downloaded contacts.  Because we are using OWA for Iphone there are no downloaded contacts. So, the international calling app does not see the contacts to be able to call.
If I go into OWA for IPhone and go to People and call somebody internationally +44 XX XXX XXXXX it works fine, but the international calling app does not activate becasue the app can't see the number.  This is because its looking only at the local downloaded contacts list, not the contacts on the web using OWA for Iphone

  • International usage charges

I'm just a little confused about how international usage works. If you don't sign up for any kind of plan and take your iPhone (to say India, where I'll be headed), will the phone still work and if so, what charges will apply? I will be using the call and voicemail feature little to none and I won't be getting incoming calls, but what about text messaging and safari? How much will those cost me if I don't agree to any plans? Or will none of it work at all?

    Alice K,
You will want to enable International Roaming with AT&T before you leave to allow you to make/receive calls internationally. AT&T would be your best source for international charges for calls and text messages. You can read the following article for more information about international travel with your iPhone:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1686
International data charges can get fairly expensive. The new iPhone 2.0 software will enable you to turn airplane mode on (which disables cell networks, so you will not receive calls or use the cell data network) but also turn Wi-Fi on, so you can still access local Wi-Fi networks and hotspots. Therefore you can still browse on Safari when you are within range of a Wi-Fi network without being worried about data charges. In this mode, you will not receive calls or missed call notifications, however. You can find out more information about the iPhone 2.0 software by watching this guided tour:
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/guidedtour/
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • Can i use iphone to iphone for free international call and text?

Can i use iphone to iphone for free international calls and text messages?

If both iPhone users are on iMessage, texting will be free, though there may be data charges if you do not have Wi-Fi. You can use FaceTime Audio in iOS 7 and later to call people but regular phone calls still count against your phone plan.

  • Obscene Prices for International Calls!!! What a Rip-Off!!!

I just took a look at my very first bill and to my surprise, my 10 year old had attempted to make 6 (1 minute calls) and 1 (29 minute call) to England to speak with her father. I admit it was partly my fault because with the last company they could just pick up the phone and call their father and I neglected to tell them that they could not do that anymore. Blah, blah, blah.....my 1st Verizon bill is $220.00 (@$100 or so in long distance charges for basically 1 call).
I called customer service to get some kind of relief but nothing. The advisor said that the billing is done by a 3rd party and that verizon can not do anything about it. I was a loyal Verizon cellular customer for 2 years, paying my bill on time and all and this is how they treat me.
I'm sorry...I know this blog si probably for people who have real issues but I needed to vent my frustration!!! I guess it's time to look for another carrier or go back to old one. For the sake of my sanity and wallet, I had a block put on my phone for international calls but how nice it would have been for Verizon to step up and do the right thing. They could have atleast put me on the international plan and backdated it!!!! GRINCH!!!! BTW, 1 minute call to England is $2.89 so don't make the same mistake!!!!

I feel your pain. I'm in bill shock too. I made one phone call to China and my bill was $200. When I called Verizon for help, they refused.
Actually the FCC received so many complaints about this issue related to cell phones that they were going to pass a law to regulate it. As a preemptive measure, many wireless carriers voluntarily agreed to send text messages to users when their charges were approaching their monthly limit. Unfortunately, there was no such action taken for landlines. Hence your and my situation.
It certainly would be a smart business decision for Verizon to include a voice alert on landlines warning you of the rate you are about to incur, as it would prevent these situations from happening, but they have yet to do so. Every time they do something like this, they lose a long-term customer for a quick profit.
Verizon is aware of the problem. It happens to millions of customers a year. But until people like you and I put pressure on the FCC to regulate them regarding landlines, nothing will change. So I encourage you to contact  http://www.fcc.gov/
