WDTV live won't see Macbook over network

The WDTV tech people basically threw their hands up, saying apple doesn't know how to design computers and I've exhausted all the AV discussion groups. Has anyone else successfully networked a WDTV to OS X (10.5.8)? I can see the WDTV, but it doesn't see my Macbook.
I'm using a wireless router.
1) The WDTV sees the network because I can play YouTube content.
2) The Macbook sees the WDTV in the Shared sidebar. I can connect and play content (though I can't copy files too the USB drive).
3) I've enabled SMB and selected my account
4) I've created a Guest account and allowed Guests to connect to shared folders.
5) In Network WINS I've set the NetBIOS name to COTTLE, added a workgroup called video, and changed the workgroup name on the WDTV to video, turned Auto Login to network share on. I'm not sure what to enter in the WINS servers. I put the ip address assigned to the WDTV.
When I select Video/Media Servers or Network Shares, nothing comes up. Once or twice the Media Server showed a Mac with an odd name, but all the folders said "no content."
My brother has a WDTV, but they have Windows. I tried it there to confirm that his WDTV does see the Windows machine, (so was set up for sharing correctly) but didn't see my Macbook, while I could see it.
What am I missing?

  • Mac Mini - Core Solo - Won't See Any Wireless network

I have a Mac Mini, first gen Intel, Core Solo, that won't see any wireless networks. However, it will see my extreme basestation, and my two airport express devices over bonjour, which makes me think that the wireless device is working.
I've reset the PMU, with no luck.
    Any suggestions?

Does an Airport card show in the system profiler?
Is Airport switched on in your mini - the Airport icon in the menu bar should show at least grey bars rather than an empty white 'fan' shape?
With Airport on, when you click on the Airport icon, does it show any network?
If you click on 'Join Other Network' and type the name of the wifi network you run, what error message does the system give?
How far away from the wifi base station is the mini? What kind of structures and environment is it in?
If you move the mini to be in close proximity to the wifi base station, does it show any signal?
When you download a copy of AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) and run it, what does it show for signals, noise etc?
How is the mini seeing any wifi devices via Bonjour - do you have it wired into your network? If so, the fact that the devices appear via bonjour doesn't mean they are transmitting wifi, nor that they are in range.
By the way, the Core Solo mini doesn't have a PMU to reset. If you used the PMU reset procedure it won't have helped, and may actually have caused problems. The correct procedure for an Intel-based mini is an SMC reset, as follows:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, *making sure the power button is not being pressed* at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • Samsung BD-6500 won't see my Media Network on WRT610N

My Samsung BD-6500 won't see my Media Network... It wil see and connect to my Main Network. I have a WRT610N.
    Any suggestions?

    1. Update the firmware. You can get it by going to the Samsung Support website. Click on link below to get manuals and firmware upgrades:
    http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/blu-ray/blu-ray-players/BD-C6500/XAA/index.idx?pagetype=...
You can also do this after performing steps 2-5 if they don't work ... if this is a new system ... it’s hard to just go right in and start updating firmware, but it may be necessary if it’s not a current firmware revision.
    2. Next, go to the setup screen on Samsung DVD player and find the Mac address then carefully write it down on a piece of paper. The 10 digit Mac address will look something like this: 1c:c1:0b:9d::c0. Remember to put the colons between each pair of digits.
    3. Bring the Mac address over to your router and access the router.
    4. Once in the router setup, go to wireless settings and find the Mac address filtering setup. Enable the Mac filtering and enter the Mac address of the player into one of the Mac address boxes - select "Permit PC" - save settings. It's important to note - it will either "Permit" or "Prevent" a Mac address - so make sure when you are done and Mac address is saved, it appears as "Permitted".
    5. Go back to the Samsung BD-6500 Player and do a reset. Once done, select the router name in the list and continue setup steps. You should now see the IP Address and other values auto-loaded and a message box that says, "Connected".
I don't know the Blueray well enough to walk you through the menu specifically - but I think this should get you going in the right direction.
    Hope this helps,
    Bill

  • Printer won't see computer on network

I have a Toshiba laptop, an HP printer and a Time Capsule Router. The Laptop is connected to the network and so is the printer but I can't find the printer on with the laptop on the network. HP is saying that I need to disable mac filtering and change the network to WEP. I dont' know how to do either one of those.

Don't do it.. you should not use any printer that doesn't use WPA2 security.. you are opening a huge security breach in your wireless network.. that I would never recommend. The exception being you live on a farm and the nearest living breathing person is 1km away. If you are in the middle of urban area you are just inviting people to hack you.
See if HP have a firmware update or offer higher level of wireless security.. MAC filtering is easy.. turn it off.. even more useless than WEP.. Go to airport utility, manual setup, on the first page make sure airport tab on top is selected.. then select access control from the menu under it.. turn off MAC filtering. (Mac address access control) disabled.
Plug the HP into the TC using USB and share it that way.. or buy a new printer.. they are cheap as nowadays.. they steal your money for the cartridges.

  • Sharing won't see the surrounding network eventhough Finder can see it

    Hi,
    I am installing a Mac OS X 10.4.4 server.
    I have enabled:
    AFP
    DHCP
    DNS
    Firewall
    NAT
    Open Directory
    Software update
    VPN
    Windows
I am trying to share a volume/folder on a machine else than the server.
In WGM (in sharing/all), the only volume I can see is the Server's hard drive eventhough the Finder can see the volume/folder on the other machine (10.4.5).
I have been stock on this for a little while now and don't seem to find my way out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Cheers
    Ben

I am trying to share a volume/folder on a machine else than the server.
Just to be clear are you trying to "reshare" a folder from the server that is from a volume mounted on a different computer?
If so, is there a reason you think this should work? Do you have a documentation reference that states that you can do that or an example set-up that shows it being done?
I'm not an expert on the internals of sharing but I don't think this should work. For one thing while you say that "Finder can see it" it is actually only mounted as belonging to the current logged in user ie 'admin' or 'bversang' or whoever is logged in to the remote volume. It is not universally available to the whole computer just to the current user.
Unless you can find a specific reference my rule of thumb would be that if you can't see it in Disk Utility you can't share it from WGM. If I'm wrong hopefully someone will correct me but unless the computer actually owns the root of a volume I don't think the computer has the ability to share it.

  • How to work on iMac files from a new Macbook over home wireless network

    Hi,
A quick question for anyone who can help. Most of the time I work on my iMac G5. But I've now also got a MacBook, and I want to be able to use that as much as possible (ie not having to be at my desk upstairs at all times).
What I need help with is file sharing. I know that I need to put files into the iMac's public folder for them to be accessible on the MacBook over my wireless network. What I'm not sure, and want to check before doing anything drastic in case I cause unintended problems, is whether there are limits of any sort on what can/should be put in the public folder.
For example, can I just drag my whole Documents folder (or my Work folder within it, about 0.5GB worth) into the Public folder? Would that then mean that I can access all my Work files from either machine?
Apologies if this is a non-query - if it is as simple as just dragging as much or as little as I want into the Public folder. I had just assumed that I'd be able to mark files/folders that I wanted to be visible/sharable over the network - and am a bit wary about shifting the locations on my iMac of huge numbers of my files.
A final follow-on query. I'd ilke to use the DVD burner on the MacBook to back-up my iTunes library (which, again, is on my iMac). Would this again be a matter of relocating the library (even temporarily) in the Public Folder so that the MacBook can see it and back it up?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance....

On the iMac - Turn on Personal File Sharing
On the MacBook - In the Finder, click on "Go", then "Connect to Server...", then type in the address of the iMac (you can find this at the bottom of the "Personal File Sharing" window on the iMac).
Click on "Connect" and enter your account name and password for the iMac.
You should get a list of available items to access, at a minimum your home directory (you don't have to use the Public shared folder). If you use Admin credentials, you can mount the hard drive and access the programs you have on the iMac and run them from the MacBook - not all programs will work this way but most of the ones I use work.

  • Hp C4580 printer won't connect to wireless network, but see network is available.

I've sat through quite a few of the threads here with regard to photsmart C4580 printer not connecting to wireless network.
My issues started with a cartridge issue, which I resolved with a new cartridge, but only after trying out different solution offered on HP forum.
Now printer won't connect to my network which it has been connected to for over 2 years with no issues. The wireless network is working perfectly fine and I even printed out a HP photosmart C4500 series connectivity status and in this report printer can see the network I need to connect to.
I've tried downloading various programs from Scan doctor to complete install of all HP programs and even tried installing printer from Windows 7 "add a printer", but none can see this printer.
lastly I was hoping trying to locate IP address for printer which looks like it may help, but report says IP Address "not applicable".
I believe printer, wireless network and PC are working correctly, this there a way to switch printer to online so it can be seen.
    Help would be great.

  • G4 (MDD) with AirPort Can't See/Won't Connect to Wireless Networks

Hi all. I've seen topics/threads that get close to my question/problem, but not quite.
    I inherited a PowerMac G4 (MDD)/Dual 1 GHz/1.5 GB DDR SDRAM/running 10.3.9.
I purchased a used original AirPort card from eBay, opened up the machine, and plugged it in. When I went to update the software (from a CD), my machine told me that it was up to date (though one HD is running OS9 and one running OSX -- so the software wouldn't install because the HD running OSX said it was up-to-date and the HD running 9 said it was impossible). The machine recognizes the card/shows it gray in the toolbar/says it has Firmware Version 8.70 in the System Profile.
My problem is that the AirPort can't see any wireless networks 99% of the time, even though 3 (including mine) are in range all the time. I've seen my network only flicker into possibility a few times, and even though I've disabled all security measures on the wireless router (Linksys Wireless-G, Model WRT54G), it simply won't connect. One time in 3 hours it momentarily looked like it was going to connect, then said "out of range," then disappeared completely. It has seen 0 wireless networks for the past hour.
I've read everything far and wide trying to solve this issue and am totally stuck. At first I thought I needed an antenna for the AirPort, but this is an internal card, so that doesn't seem right. I know the AirPort card (and not Extreme) is right because a) I don't have a FW800 port and b) the machine recognizes this card. Finally, I thought it may have had to do with the WPA security on the Linksys, but even with security disabled...nothing.
I'm feeling very frustrated. Any advice?
    Thank you very much.

Thanks, Tom. I did as you suggested, and the Max Signal under the Log is showing a red 12, which is terrible, yes? What, exactly, does this tell me? That this is simply a case of old technology (AirPort b) struggling to communicate with new technology (Linksys g) over a medium distance (Linksys is in next room, through wall)? If plugging straight into the ethernet were an option, I'd just do it. But I can't get my G4 onto the Internet without running cords down the hallway and through my TV room, which is an obvious eyesore.
Is there a chance this AirPort card is only partly functional and I should return it? Or do I need to accept the fact that this G4 needs to either be moved closer to the Linksys router or be plugged in directly?
    Thank you.

  • Macbook: I can't see my home network....

I am using a Macbook as detailed in my profile. Yesterday, upon getting home from work I booted up my Macbook to find out I couldn't get on the net.
Upon further investigation I found that the Macbook could not see my home network, despite me using it the previous evening. It can see all the other local networks that it usually can, as well as the mobile modem that I am using to type this now.
All other computers on the network can see it, and looking on the network configuration screen it can see my Macbook. But I can't see it
The router is a Belkin one

Tried that yesterday - still no joy

  • Just got a macbook, and I cannot print on my printer. I used to be able to print on my printer with my old Dell laptop, but I can't print with my macbook. I can see the printer network on on my macbook, it says it is my default printer, but I can't print.

I just got a macbook air and I cannot print on my home printer which is networked through my wife's window based computer. I can see the wifi network, I can see the printer, it is set as my default, but I can't print.
    Any ideas?

You may have to visit the printer manufacturer's web site and look into their support pages to get a print driver for your Mac, and install it. Or see if you can see if a driver may already be in your Mac by checking settings, since there are many drivers already installed in Mac OS X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My 13in Macbook Pro can't see a wireless network but my friends Macbook Pro can

Me and my friend both have identical 13 in Macbook Pro's except he has 250 gb and I have 350gb. Everything else is the same even the wireless card. The problem is, he can see and connect to a unsecured wireless network but i can't. Why is this ?
Our computers can see the same networks on the list but my Macbook does not see one network, the unsecured network !!!

I never said there wasn't an issue, just that blame could not be assigned based on what we know now and that there are many more people not having problems with Leopard and WiFi than those that are.
In my circle of associates I know of literally hundreds of Mac owners, of which approximately three are having WiFi issues.
I know how frustrating it is to be one of those afflicted - my stories of constant WiFi drops for the first six months I owned my MBP have been recounted in several threads.
But it's just as frustrating to read how Leopard is just plain broken when in fact I've not seen a single WiFi drop in Tiger or Leopard since February 2007.
This is also why I've continually urged people experiencing the problem to open an AppleCare case - it's only then that Apple Engineering can find the commonalities in cases where WiFi is failing and either fix their driver or notify the router manufacturer of their bug.
Are there bugs with AirPort in Leopard? Of course, and I even know of one that affects me on occasion that's known, and that's a failure to reassociate with a known network when waking from sleep. The workaround is simple - toggle AirPort off and back on - but it's a known issue nevertheless.
But each of these threads addresses an individual problem, and among the numbers of people experiencing difficulties, few report that their Mac sees no wireless networks, and that's what the advice I've given in this thread is geared towards.

• After installing Mavericks wifi won't see my network (WPA2 Personal)

Installed mavericks on my MacPro and wifi was spotty for the first day or two and wouldn't automatically select my wifi network after sleep. So I deleted my network name from the wifi list and since then it won't see it at all. Even if i type in the name manually it says no networks found. Tried repairing permissions and restarting that didn't help either.
    Any suggestions?

Anything further I can do before taking the hammer to my iPad 2 3g+Wi-fi?
    Plenty.
Am I correct in thinking that you can only setup 3g connection if you already have wifi connection?
    Incorrect.
It would appear to me that this device is about as useful as a brick, no?
It has not been useful for the last 4 months?
Do you connect your iPad with any other wi-fi network besides your own?
If so, do you have the same problem with any other wi-fi network your iPad has access to?
If you connect your iPad with any other wi-fi network besides your own and the problem is with your wi-fi network only, this leans toward there being a problem with your wi-fi network regardless how many computers or other devices don't have any problem connecting with your network.
What troubleshooting steps have you tried with your wireless network and router if any to rule out a potential problem there?
