Why are apps unable to determine my location?

A number of apps tell me they can not determine my location. I have location services turned on for these apps and an active wi fi connection. Why is this happening? How do I fix this problem?

I have tried many things to reset the iPad and the network. So far, the iPad still thinks it is in New York. What is strange is that my iPod touch recognizes the correct location (02420) and both devices are using the same home wi fi network. If this is a problem related to the node not being in the database, how do I add it. I do not have an iPhone.

    I can't get location service running in Mavericks.
    I know it worked before. But somehow it stopped working. It doesn't work with map neither.

    Perhaps the 'network time server' for the region, that Apple uses, is down at this time(?)
    Not sure how one would go about reporting an issue, to somewhere it would matter...
    Try unchecking the box next to the automatic time zone location item & set it manually.

    The same item has occurred several times, as indicated by a few similar named topics

    You may have to set the TimeZone manually and turn off the automatic location.
    This has been an issue in some places (regional, etc) since OS X 10.6.8. but
    I have no way of knowing if the cause may be the same or another behind it.
    However such an outage (if it could be proven as such) would be difficult to work
    around; short of testing the computer in a different Time Zone to see if that network
    server was working. Then you could tell if the issue is in the Time Zone you wanted
    to be using, and not in the computer itself. A matter of troubleshooting.

    So, see if the clock and time zone work if you do not have the Automatic location set
    and choose the location manually instead. I don't believe a reset of the System
    Management Controller (SMC) or the NVRAM/PRAM may be of help; though these
    do have some bearing on settings in the computer, for different purposes.

    Hopefully you won't have to reset anything but the Date/Time panel in the Mac.

  • Unable to determine current location

    My ipad and imac could locate the location but mac book pro unable to determine the location. OSX is mountain lion 10.8.1. Anybody can help me out plz.

    Multiple posts/questions about same topic, problem. I too see this and cannot get it to refresh location of friend. 30 minutes does not help. I cannot make it refresh location or send new location request on a regular basuis

    Is Location Services turned on in Settings>Privacy?
    For location the iPod uses the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. You do not have to be connected to the network/router to use that router's location. Thus, it appears that the iPod can't see a nearby router that is in Apple's database. Apple continuously updated their database based on info they obtain from iPhones. No one has been able to find a way to inform Apple of a router or correct is location.
    You can confirm that by going to place with a know located router like Starbucks or McDonalds

    The Apps in iTunes on my Mac take up a lot of disk space. Why are they there at all? I use iCloud to backup my iPhone and iPad. iTunes Store keeps my purchase history. So, why are the Apps taking up space on my computer?

  • Why are apps appearing in my music folder?

    Just wondering if I can delete these ".IPA" (iOS App) files and .XML files that have appeared in my Music folder. I'm on a PC, so the files are assigned to iTunes, but I still don't know why they're here. I think they appeared after I synced my iPod Touch (2nd Gen) with the computer. There's also over 300 "ITC2" files which I have no clue about. All the app files are apps I have on my iPod, so that much makes sense, and some of the "ITC2" files are the same name as the 2 books I have on my iPod. All the others are just things like "4C9515F643471A36-D9A5A87B5F4A4EDF.ITC2". I just want to know if I can delete them really.

    Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
    .ipa files are your apps and should end up in Mobile Applications. .itc2 files are cached artwork and should end up in the Album Artwork folders. These are normal parts of the iTunes library and should be left alone. I can't tell exactly what you did when you connected your device but it looks like you allowed iTunes to transfer your purchases into your library. This is a good thing. If your iPod was lost, stolen or damaged, you would have the files needed to rebuild your setup on a replacement device.
    The iTunes folder is normally created inside your profile's Music folder, with the iTunes Media folder inside iTunes. If the files in question are appearing outside of the normal folder structure outlined above then perhaps you have the wrong setting for the media folder.

    Location apps will turn themselves back on when the phone is restarted.

  • Why are apps taking up so much memory?

    My iPod has recently started telling me that I'm low on memory and no matter how many apps I delete it seems to make very little difference. I then started deleting music because I thought it would probably be more effective but at the moment more memory is being used on apps than on music and "other" put together.
    I only have 20 downloaded apps and yet they're taking up 3.7GB of space. From what I've seen this sounds completely unreasonable so what is going on? Is there a way that I can find out how much memory each app is using?

    Apps generally speaking take very little space, unless you have something like a location Map database downloaded (think GPS app), or maybe a game that has tons of screen images.  Otherwise apps really do not take up much space, which is why when you delete them it does not make much of a difference.
    So, again, unless you have one of the above mapping or very large game apps, you need to look to something else for the source of your storage usage.

    They were bought by the same account and you haven't changed countries ? Some film studios don't allow re-downloading, but you should be able to copy/sync them between your computers/devices - film studios and other content providers occasionally remove their items from the store, so there is no guarantee that you will be able to redownload any item from the store.

  • Why are apps on iPhone 5 short?

    I had to go to the Apple Store yesterday because a button was non responsive.  I had already uploaded iOS 7 on the old iPhone 5.  The tech at the store swapped out my phone for a new one and told me I would have to install the new software on this phone since iOS 7 was so new.  I got home and did what he said.  Now, some of the apps when I open them are shorter than the screen and other simply crash as soon as I open them.  I can correct this by deleting and reinstalling the app.  Why is this happening?

    When apps are not fullscreen, they havn't been adapter to the iPhone 5 screen, which is larger than that of the iPhone 4/4S. You will have to contact the app developer - he is the one who has to adapt the app.
    As for apps crashing: If this happens repeatedly I would suggest that you restore your phone over iTunes, as this definetly is not normal behaviour.

    Hey anyone know why My iTunes is asking to download an app(Instagram) from my cell to iTunes? I have been looking for it to use.

    Yes, apps sold in the iTunes App Store are for iOS devices; iPhones, iPads and iPods Touch.
    Apps sold in the Mac App Store are for Macs.
    iOS apps don't run on Macs and Mac apps don't run on Macs. If a developer has developed an app for both operating systems, they are sold separately in their respective app store.

    It's probably your internet speed, or something on your computer is impeding the speed.  Try to do the updates from safe mode.  OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

  • Why are Apps still not syncing between my iPhone 4S and iPad 4?

    I have a new iPad 4 and I also have an iPhone 4S.  I have enabled 'Automatic Downloads' on both, but for some reason, I can download Apps on one device and they're not showing up on the other.  The only thing I can figure is that maybe some of the Apps downloaded on the iPad, for example, aren't compatible with the iPhone 4S and therefore they don't automatically download.  Or, and I hope note, there's a glitch in the system :-(
    I like to have all my stuff sync'd to the extent possible, but this automated App synchronization doesn't really seem to be happening as advertised.
    And yes, I did go into iTunes on my PC and enable the automatic downloads there as well on the Preferences tab.
    Some example Apps that didn't download from my iPad to my iPhone are USA Today, Men's Health Mag, UPS and Quick Scan barcode scanner.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    I may recall that you might have to charge your device in order for the automatic download to work. But I'm not 100% sure, it is worth trying out.

    It seems from reading this forum that I am not the first person with this problem moving into a new build property.
    I ordered my line installation on June 12th, it was eventually installed on July 22nd after one failed appointment and numerous phone calls and excuses.
    The engineer who installed it said there were faults that need fixing and would take a couple of days before the line could be activated.     A month later these faults have not been rectified and therefore  we still have no phone line or broadband.  
    Yesterday I registered an official complaint with BT as I am tired of being given false promises, eg last week I was told by the call centre in Accrington that it was guaranteed to be done by midnight Friday, 15th August ............ it wasnt.    Then I'm told Tuesday, 19th .......... it wasnt.    This type of thing has gone on for a month now and the annoying thing is that my neighbour actually spoke to an Openreach engineer on  Tuesday who said it could take a further 2 -3 weeks or in reality 6 - 7 weeks !!!! 
    I am appalled not only at the poor customer service received from BT but their continued false promises, I feel I am being treated like an idiot.    Most of the time when promised an update no-one calls to actually give you one, then when you ring them you're told you'll get an update in a couple of days, it's like being on a merry-go-round.  I'm now at the stage where I can't believe a single thing I'm being told.
    Any help in getting this sorted would be appreciated.       Thanks.
