Why is my iMac suddenly lagging on my user account?

Hi,
This morning, I woke my iMac from sleep to find that it was running super slow... Applications that would open in the blink of an eye are now taking up to 5 minutes, that is if they even open, as now applications are sometimes just not responding, resulting in me having to force quit. It is basically impossible to use.
Another problem is that I've noticed that I cannot see the contents of my external hard drive. It shows up in finder, I can read and write [i tested by transferring files to it, worked fine], but if I click on it, nothing shows up, like all of the files have been hidden or something.
However, when I use my brothers user, I can view the contents of the hard drive [he also has an admin acount] and the computer does not lag at all! I am confused as to what happened, as the whole system was working perfectly yesterday.
I am doubtful that it is a ram problem, as I have 8gb of ram and dont use heavy applications very often [the main one is Logic]. I havent installed or uninstalled any programs recently either.
Running a late 2011 iMac, OSX 10.7.5, with 8gb of ram.
What has gone wrong here? Any ideas?

This can be caused by many things, the most obvious items are a HD that is too full.  OS X really needs 10-15% of the total HD space available. You can check that information by opening a Finder window, then highlight the HD and click Command I (I as in Ivan.)
Another popular thing is you may not have much Free RAM, you can open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and click the System Memory tab, look to see how much FREE RAM the system has. Also look and see if there are any applications using a large percentage of the CPU, look in the %CPU column and you can see.
In addition you can also just restart the computer or restart in Safe Mode which will clear some caches, it's possible one may have become corrupted.
Finally you can read the Spinning Beach Ball of Death article, this will help you locate exactly what is the cause of your SBBOD.

When I try to migrate from imac to macbook pro my user account says "this user needs attention before migrating". My e-mail does not migrate in the process. This never happened before I updated to Maverick. I have repaired user permissions but this not make any difference

Just a Follow-up - the migration went fine. The migration did not import Little Snitch, Flip4Mac and DivX, stating they were incompatible.  It also reported that Intego Back up Assistant has improper security setting (which I have not yet investigated).
I am encountering small problems.  Safari would not open embedded pdf documents and instead showed a black screen.  This was fixed with instructions found at http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html and it now works fine.
Importing 17 years of old mail from Eudora to Apple Mail was time consuming. mostly because of the pre-migration preening i did, but using Eudora file cleaner before the migrtaion helped a lot.
I amy find some more glitches, but so far everything seems to be working.

Why would my iMac (less than one year old) suddenly start freezing?  This is the 3rd time in a week.  Thanks for any help.

Other than the ones that came on the computer I've only added Quicken and MahJong game.  I was looking at some other questions and I guess I should have put more info about Mac in my question. I am running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2   Computer purchase new in May, 2013.

  • Why can't I share my music across user accounts on my home  PC?

    Hi
I'm having a frustrating time trying to get Itunes to share music files with my wife's user account on my computer. We both use Itunes, but we have our music stored individually in our 'My documents' folders, leading to duplicate songs on the hard drive.
I have tried various methods to allow my wife to use my music files. First I set my music to 'shared' and her's to 'look for shared music' with no success. Then I tried moving all the music to the shared documents folder. Now I can use her music but she can't use mine. My filenames are in green and her's are in black. I know that has something to do with encrypted files but surely in the shared folder she should be able to access them. I moved these files from My documents, which is not accessable to her. Is that why?

Sorry. I have realised that i need to decrypt the files for them to work.

  • Why do i get a return comment of 'user account is in INVALID mode' when i send a pic email via cell

my printer is the hp 3050a deskjet all in one j611g . when i send pics from phone via email, the return message via email says' user account is in INVALID mode'. why is this and how do i fix it?

Hi shannee7, it may be because the Web Services function on your printer was removed. You could try re-enabling Web Services, which will print a new printer code by:
Pressing the ePrint button on your printers front panel
Scrolling down to "Remove Web Services" and selecting OK
To re-enable Web Services press the ePrint button on the front panel
Select OK to accept the terms of the service
Front panel display should read "Downloading from Web" and a new Web Services info sheet should print out with a new code for your printer.
If you have setup an ePrintCenter account you can log in and update your printers e-mail address  using the new code
Let me know how you get on

  • How to move old e-mail from iMac to shared MacMini - separate user accounts?

My wife and I share a new MacMini.  We each have separate user accounts.  She would like her old e-mail messages moved from her old iMac to the MacMini.  I believe they are in her old iMac's USER--LIBRARY--MAIL  directory.  Is this right?   Do I just copy these files and paste them in the same directory in the MacMini?
Also does anyone know how to move her old Keychain files on her old iMac to her user account on the macmini?
    Thanks for the help.   -Bruce

There are two issues when I do so. First of all I have "ghost" accounts who do not show up in my e-mail preferences but keep on showing up randomly. Secondly I cannot remove "other accounts" in Mail>Preferences I will get the following error message: The account "XXXX.XXXX.Com"  is shared using iCloud. You can remove this account from iCloud in Internet Accounts.
And in iCloud internet accounts the particular account will not be visible.

  • 27" 2010 iMac randomly crashing on admin user account

This one is a bit of a doozy...
We've had this iMac for a little over a year now and it has been working fine until very recently.  After installing the newest version of iMovie on it through the App Store, a very strange thing has been happening.  While an application is open (it started with just iMovie but it's constant now with any application) the computer will sort of crash to an extent.  The computer still runs and if something is say downloading, it will continue downloading, but I lose control of pretty much everything.  The bar at the top of the screen stays on the application no matter where I click (i.e. if it crashes while I'm in iMovie and I click on a finder window, the control panel at the top still reads iMovie).  After that I can't switch applications, the window of the one I'm in becomes unusable, and I have to force a restart.
I took this to Apple and they had me reinstall iMovie, and I just reinstalled all of Snow Leopard.  Both were unsuccessful.  Then I decided to create a second User Account, as a non-admin.  It works completely fine, not a glitch in the system.  Then I go back to the original/admin and the problem returns immediately.
    Can I get some help?

Not sure but it may possibly be a problem with Disk Permissions that sometimes go awry. You can View Disk Permissions using Disk Utility.  I think to Repair Disk Permissions you need to boot from the Install DVD (boot while holding down the ‘C’ key immediately).  Don’t reinstall the operating system but just get to the Install panel that shows you all the menus at the top and select Disk Utility from the Tools menu.  Click on First Aid and then View Disk Permissions.  You may need to run Repair Disk Permissions two or three times and there will still be messages that look like errors but those can likely be ignored; you’ll see what it repaired.
    Hope that helps.

  • Late 2009 iMac: Secure deleting of a user account taking hours

Hey everyone, I started to securely delete a user account on my Late 2009 iMac around 2 hours ago, and the process seems to still be going on. Does anyone know how long this is likely to take? I have a 1Tb hard drive, but only around 500 Gb was utilised. Ive read that there can either be a 7-pass delete or a 35-pass delete, so which one would be the default? What risks would I be facing if I cold-rebooted the mac?
Any help would be great! Thanks.

    Hello there, Sparrow247.
When deleting a User account in Mac OS X, the options available are as indicated in the following Knowledge Base article:
OS X Mavericks: Delete a user
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13864
On the other hand, if you are trying to securely erase the entire disk, then this article is more appropriate:
Mac OS X: About Disk Utility's erase free space feature
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3680
As with any of these features, it is difficult to provide an exact time-frame as each situation is unique, but the article provides this ratio for the 7-pass erase:
    "7-Pass Erase" option
Writes data over the free disk space seven times. This provides a highly secure erasure of disk data. A 7-Pass Erase takes seven times longer than a Zero Out Data erase.
Advanced: The 7-Pass Erase option conforms to the DoD 5220.22-M specification. This specification calls for three passes, but Disk Utility performs seven. Click here for more details about the specification.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Why does my Macbook suddenly lag playing games?

I just got Left 4 Dead 2 on steam for free, and decided to play it earlier today. It worked fairly well on low settings, as my macbook is fairly old (late 2009 model).
It has 4GB of RAM in it which is usually enough for games and so it proved... Until now.
The second time I loaded the game up it lagged unbearably, so bad the game audio just stopped completely, and the game was unplayable. I tried restarting the game, steam, and even purging my inactive memory all to no avail.
Only when I restarted the laptop did it actually work well enough to play.
I'm running OSX Mavericks so you know, so does anyone know why this would suddenly happen. I know Macs aren't designed for gaming but it's nice to be able to play something.
    Cheers.

I'm afraid that I have exactly the same issue with my new MacBook. random appearance of the 'would you like to shutdown.....' dialog box. Which if not canceled just kills the power. It doesn't even go through the proper shutdown process and looses all unsaved changes etc.
It doesn't seem to happen when I'm at work with USB keyboard and mouse plugged in, so I guess it's something to do with the new built in keyboard and trackpad assembly.
Looking forward to a firmware update!

  • Why has my iMac suddenly become very slow in waking up

Have not installed any new software recently but have just changed my ISP, suddenly my iMac takes nearly a minute to 'wake up' Mountain Lion installed when it first became available and it was fine after that. When it does wake up it is fine, not slow, and opens apps just as quick as before.

    Hi:
As I said, there are literally thousands of messages - most relate to specific configurations.
When those messages appear, does quite a bit of time elapse?
I Googled "ACE."  The only possibly relevant thing I could find is a description of Cisco networking software....

  • Why would my iMac suddenly run slowly out of nowhere?

Earlier this evening, I was just clicking on a song to upload it to tumblr, and my iMac froze. I had to hold "power" and restart it. After I logged in, my desktop failed to load completely (the menu bar was conspicuously absent and I had about six pictures saved to my desktop and the thumbnails were not showing up for any of them). After several restarts (I tried starting it in safe mode and hitting CommandOption+PR and neither did anything to help the problem)
I waited after the last time I restarted the computer, and after about fifteen to twenty minutes, my Mail icon started bouncing. I have it set to open at login so apparently it took about fifteen minutes for it to actually start opening. Now, simply moving the mouse freezes my computer for about three minutes. It ends up taking me about twelve minutes to position the mouse over an icon, click on it once to select it and click on it again to open it. As you can imagine, this makes it VERY difficult for me to do any of the normal tasks one might do in a situation like this (repair permissions, etc.)
This happened completely out of the blue. Up until this point, my iMac has operated almost perfectly aside from one incident several weeks ago that turned out to be a problem with my router. I just don't understand why this would happen out of nowhere, and as you can imagine I am very concerned. What would cause this to happen, and is there anything that can be done to fix it?
    Thank you all in advance.

All right, I followed your instructions...I had to click Verify Disk first because Repair Disk was grayed out. The problem is, I got an error that says:
    "First Aid Failed.
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Then, in the Disk Utility window it says:
    "Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
I'm trying to again right now...now in the Disk Utility window it says:
    "Verifying Volume 'Macintosh HD'
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: filesystem verify or repair failed."
Now, I am confused because I literally CANNOT repair the disk, since that option is unavailable. What are some other options?
Also, just figured I'd throw this out there...I am not opposed to reinstalling Leopard even if it means I will lose everything on my computer. I have all of my important files backed up on my external hard drive.
Thank you for your suggestions - even though this did not work, I feel like this might help me narrow down the problem somewhat. Maybe you can clarify what all of these error messages mean.

  • Why does my iMac suddenly fail to automatically go in to sleep mode?

Had difficulty booting up system one day. Screensaver comes on after period of non-use, then black screen when display goes away, However, I no longer get "breathing" white light at right hand corner of screen, even though the screen goes black. Tech support instructed me to perform start, apple key, options p, then r. ( In order to reset PRAM.) Light will only "breathe" when it is manually placed into sleep mode; NOT when it is left alone to do it by itself. Does anyone know why this is occuring? Many thanks

    FIXED!
The IP address of the printer had changed. I printed a new Configuration Page from the printer, which contains the IP address. I then entered the new IP address into my iMac. The iMac was then able to 'see' the printer and I can now print.
The HP forums solved this for me.

My iMac shows the pinwheel every time I try to type on a website or email.  Is there a virus?  Looks like someone is remotely messing with my computer.

Seriously, you can't run a Mac with only 85 MB of free hard drive space. It's not quite as bad as KBs, but it's still dismall.
Can you go click on your Hard Drive icon (right hand upper corder of your screen?  At the same time as you click, press down the letter " i " key at the same time.  You will get a screen with your HD Capacity, Used space, & Available space.  Please let us know what your numbers are:

  • Why does Firefox 33.1.1 require a User Account Control dialog before loading?

I am unable to stop FF from requiring the User Account Control dialog box before it will load. I uninstalled and reinstalled a clean copy, which worked the first time, and then re-established the UAC dialog on subsequent starts. This is incredibly annoying. It has never happened before with FF. How do I stop this behavior? I will stop using the damn program if this can't be fixed.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
    * Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
    * "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
If you can't make the changes then you need to start Windows Explorer as Administrator.
