I know how to use the on/off button, but why is it locking up in the first place, everytime I try to shutdown?

The computer is completely unresponsive and won't shut down or turn off. It is stuck in Set Up Assistant after trying to sign in to AppleID.
Attempting to shut down or restart produces the following dialogue:
"The application Set Up Assistant has cancelled shut down.
To try shutting down again, quit Setup Assistant and click Try Again."
HOWEVER it is impossible to quick Set Up Assistant— the icon is completely unresponsive even to force quit, right click or anything.
I've managed to get into being able to see Dashboard and at the top Desktop and the dock below. But I can't click on anything from there. So it seems it is not the whole computer. Just set-up assistant.

My mac mini will not shutdown with either Mavericks or Yosemite (following a clean install)

First noted while running Mavericks, my Mac-Mini will not shutdown. It just hangs on a black screen with the little icon. I created a clean user account and the problem went away. Rather than do a fresh install of Mavericks, I waited until Yosemite came out. I reformatted the drive and did a fresh Yosemite install. I then restored my apps and data only to find the problem is still present. I've also tried stopping many of the applications I would normally expect might cause the problem with no luck. And I tried the one Yosemite suggestion regarding deleting the Library/Caches folder content with no luck.
My naive question: following the fresh install of Mavericks, should I have done a re-install of my (very many) applications instead of a restore from an image?
I've tried looking at the system logs after I've forced a shutdown with the power button but there's nothing I could find that shows any problems.
Any other suggestions of things to try would be appreciated.

It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
I have reset the PRAM.
Any help would be appreciated.

Surface Pro Windows 8.1 Will Not Shutdown

Hello All:
I'm having a problem with a Surface Pro that will not shutdown. It says it's shutting down, but it doesn't. I touch the screen after long periods of time after issuing a shutdown & it's waiting to log back in. Restart works as advertised.
Anyone got some tips to troubleshoot this? Thanks for any feedback.

I found it - "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" was turned on. This is a terrible (and not recommended by IT admins) setting to have turned on by default. Does MS even need to mess w/the shutdown buttons/process? First the Office Ribbon, then
the Start button, now this!
People are creatures of habit - keep things the same or @ least allow them to change it back to how they're used to!

Laptop will NOT Shutdown after a hard drive installation

We have been rebuilding a Pismo from scratch basically. The last part was the hard drive which we did yesterday. It too awhile to get the computer to boot up but when it did it worked perfectly - or so we thought. After replacing all the contents of a broken iBook (cloned backup), we used it for a while and things worked fine. Unfortunately, it will not shutdown. Using shutdown ... it closes all the files and then just sits there with the desktop open. Tried several things and it just won't shut off. Any ideas?

Are you talking about the Pismo not shutting down? Or an iBook?
Have you tried forcing a shutdown by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds? This is how to force an iBook to shut down.
Every time you have to do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
If it continues to have problems shutting down, you may want to try resetting the PMU.

Envy 15 laptop will not shutdown after installing windows 10

After installing windows 10, laptop will not shutdown , and cannot wake from sleep mode. I have to hold power button in to turn off .

Wake on Lan will not shutdown

Hello everyone,
I hope I'm posting in the right forum as I think I am simply over looking something.
I have a dual boot system (win 7 and arch) and am trying to get Wake on Lan to work. I have installed ethtool and wol to find my card defaults to receive magic packets (g). I'm using an Asus Rampage IV Extreme mobo with the latest bios. Everything performs as it should with windows when shutting down or hibernating. My issue is when I suspend or shutdown arch it powers down completely and then reboots in a matter of seconds. If I force the card to wol unicast I can suspend the system (sometimes) but will still not shutdown without rebooting. I have used netctl to force the card to wol disabled and I can suspend it everytime. However, even setting wol to disabled, the computer will not shut down. I have disconnected the ethernet cord and even disabled the NIC in the bios but still the same results. If I shut down arch and pull the power when it initially shuts down it simply reboots as soon as power is connected again. The only way I have found to shut it down is to disable "wake on pcie" in the bios. This in turn also disables the windows Wake on Lan. If anybody has an idea of what a solution might be I am all ears (even if it calls for some trolling, I'm sure this deserves some :-)

Recently, I have been testing several systems (Z77 and H97-based) after I disabled all references to 'xHCI' as it pertains to USB settings. I also enabled wake on keyboard per one suggestion in one of the links above. In about 15 power cycles, I haven't observed an unintentional wake-up with 'wake on PCIe' enabled in the BIOS. More time is needed before I will claim either setting is the fix.

Installed XP but PC will not shutdown

I have a PC using an MS-6534 Motherboard that WAS running Windows 98SE with no problems.
For 'corporate' reasons the PC has been re-installed with XP Pro.
Ever since XP was put on it the PC will not shutdown. It gets to "Windows is shutting down" and then hangs ... stops functioning! Reset it and it starts fine. If I RESTART it then it works fine. I even took it back to 98 thinking I had a 'new' harfware problem, but it shuts down fine.
Can anyone give me some ideas of a) what is going on and b) how do I fix it?

oh i read the first letter and it is my story.
i talked with the M$ assistence and the last time we stayed together for 2 hours X-((and nothing happened
the work from 8:00 to 18:00 and i work from 7:00 to 19:00 so its very rare that i can talk together!!
the last time and the internetr forum they say that i need to manage the APM. but where isit in the winxp? where isit in the bios?
what to do?
if i press the restart every thing its ok and after a restart i can shutdown the pc.
but if i use anuything as internet or games the pc freezes in the blue screen "windows is shuting down..."

MacAir will not shutdown

MAcAir book was in sleep mode, and will not shutdown. Rainbow wheel keeps spinning

Press command + option + esc keys together to force a Force Quit.
If that doesn't help, press the power button for about 10 seconds.

Zap the PRAM and reset the CMS
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
How to Reset Your Mac's SMC
The method for resetting your Mac's SMC depends on the type of Mac you have. All SMC reset instructions require shutting down your Mac first. If your Mac fails to shut down, try pressing and holding the power button until the Mac shuts down, which usually takes 10 seconds or so.
Mac portables with user-removable batteries (MacBook and most MacBook Pros):
Shut down your Mac.
Disconnect your Mac portable from its MagSafe connector.

Open the Mac Pro's side access panel.
Just below the Drive 4 sled and adjacent to the top PCI-e slot is a small button labeled SMC. Press and hold this button for 10 seconds.
Close the Mac Pro's side door.
Reconnect your Mac's power cord.
Wait five seconds.
Start your Mac by pressing the power button.

10.4.9 Will Not Shutdown or Restart.

Ok, I went through many many discussions but decided to start a new topic because nothing seems to be helping. I have a dual 1.8 G5 w/ 4 GB of memory. I ran Carbon Copy Cloner to do a bootable backup. repaired permissions, ran disk warrior, booted up from my 10.4 install disk and ran an update. After it booted up, I repaired permissions, downloaded the 10.4.9 combo update and ran it. At this time, it wouldn't reboot. Everything on the screen goes blank as if it quit everything. However, some processes seems to be preventing it from shutting down or rebooting.
I booted up in safe mode (holding the shift), single user mode (apple-s) and ran the fsck -f command. Still hangs.
I did open up console and ran a SUDO kill process command (can't remember which one it was but when I get home I will post everyone the command) then did a shutdown and low and behold it worked. However, if I don't run this sudo command before I reboot or shutdown it will not restart or shutdown.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of doing an archive and reinstall or better yet, format and reinstall. I just don't really want to reload all my applications (Cubase SX 2 w/ all the VST's sounds like a PITA).

Well last night I clean out various caches w/ MainMenu, zapped the PRAM (Apple-Opt-P-R), unplugged the power and none of them seemed to solve my issue. I ended up pulling the three items out of the StartupItems folder, sudo shutdown -h now in terminal, then shut down... I didn't just do everything all at the same time. I'm pretty sure that the three StartupItems were causing the problem because we are now starting up fine. Unfortunately I will probably need to reinstall CubaseSX 2 Dongle software because I think that was one of the items I removed from the startup items. Also I kind of was sloppy the other night and deleted the startup items under my user. So, I'm not done but everything seems to be working great right now.

My MacBook will not shutdown or restart

When attempting to shutdown or restart all apps. close, I get the message that says system will close/shutdown in a certain amount of seconds, but the process is not completed. I've tried holding down the power button as well. This does not work. Any suggestions?

ITunes will not shutdown I have to Contrl-Alt-Delete and end itunes.exe and itunes help to get it to shut down and stay closed. I did a system restore and went back to 10.5.1 version and updated to 10.5.3 no dice Windows 7 64 bit

Itunes will not stay close ever since I updated to 10.5.3 version. I try to close program and it pops right back up! The only way to close is open tack manager and stop the itunes.exe and the itunes.help then it will stay close. I did a system restore back to the earlier version of itunes but problem presisted. I finally did the task manager again and downloaded the update to 10.5.3 and this seemed to resolve the problem for awhile but now it is back! Is anybody else experiencing this problem? and where you able to correct it? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit have never had a problem with anything till now. I ran scans of my machine no viruses.

After the update to v10.5.3 iTunes isn't shutting down anymore. I have this error on various Windows versions (XP SP3, Win7 x86, Win7 x64.
On my private Notebook v10.5.2.11 still works! I won't update iTunes there - not even for a test .

Word 2007 will not shutdown properly

I am using an HP D7460 as a wireless printer. Everytime I close Word 2007 it will close then restart with an error message that Word didn't shutdown properly and will reopen. I send an error message to Microsoft who then says the error is created by HP printer drivers. This happens on all of my systems which are Windows XP and also Vista. 1-Dell, 1 Compaq and 1 Toshiba laptop. The work around was to not us this HP printer as your default printer and that solved the problem on all machines. Was told they are working on the problem and that was better than 2 months ago. Seems it must be something very hard or there is no one out there in HP land working on solving this issue. Does anyone here have any kind of an idea? The printer works fine except for this problem on all machines. It just seems to be something to do with either the driver or Microsoft Word 2007 who doesn't except the problem they simply blame it on the printer. I have to agree with Microsoft because this never happened until I installed this wireless printer from HP. I also have an HP 5150 for over a year with no problem like this.

I though that I was totally incompetent !! This Printer replaced my Canon i860 workhorse (worn out). The Hp is beautifully designed, with fabulous features.
I WANT THIS PRINTER TO WORK... I was relieved to find this forum.. so many people with the same problems. Wanting a solution.
