Windows Server 2008 backups failing

I have a Windows Server 2008, fully patched that backups recently started to fail and now, we are unable to open the Windows Server Backup. Also unable to open Disk Management or any other applications requiring Virtual Disk.
Attempts to start VDS from service or command line result in the following errors:
1:
A timeout was reached (180000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Virtual Disk service to connect.
2:
The Virtual Disk service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
I added the debuglog to registry and the $vds$.log only records the following:
(PID:8988,TID:10060,17:32:43) ERROR: CVdsLoader::LoadService, 3, hr=8007041D
I have also increased the timeout dramatically to no avail.
SFC /scannow returns:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Nothing requiring Virtual Disk Service will operate making backups and imaging impossible.
Any thoughts?

Hi,
As SFC could find some issues (but fail to fix), please try to DISM could help as well:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Also though the following hotfix is not specific for this error, it helps updating VDS components. Please try it and see if issue persists after installing it.
Virtual Disk Service (VDS) crashes when you try to extend a dynamic volume in an NTFS file system on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows 7

Hi, When I try to activate the Window Server 2008 Backup Features, the system prompt me an error. please review below message appear at event viewer. Not sure how it happen / solve it?
    "Installation failed.

Error: Attempt to install Command-line Tools failed with error code 0x80070543. Cannot open an anonymous level security token"

    Hi,
Have you checked the link Simon provided? Any progress?
For your information, the Servermanager.msc is dependent on the .NET framework. Any improper modification of the "Default Authentication Level" will cause the COM
modules related to .NET framework abnormal. When we attempt to install of Roles and Features to impersonate as ANONYMOUS LOGON, this security context doesn’t have permission on any of the System Folders and hence we are failing with the above error listed.
To fix the issue, please configure the related settings to default as the KB971509 suggested.
    Thanks.

  • Windows Storage Server 2008 backup fail to UEFI based computers

    Hai All
I have got Windows Storage Server 2008 running on a WD Sentinel DX4000. Recently my company bought a couple of new Dell laptops all running windows 8.1 64bit OS. Only three older laptops were left. Now for the fun part...I installed the connectors pointing
to the Sentinel on the laptops, and as expected the pc's show on the dashboard of the Storage Server, but all of the backups fail on the newer laptops. I installed the connectors on the older laptops as well and they go through no problem
The only difference between the older laptops and the new ones are the GPT partition drives and laptops running on UEFI, the older laptops, although running the same OS, do not have GPT and UEFI. I looked at the Event Viewer and found three errors to do
with the backup: Event 514 pointing to a ClientVSSProblem, Event 8194 pointing to Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querrying for the VSSWriterCallback interface, hr=0x80070005,Access Denied and the last one is Event 513 CAPI2, Cryptographic
Service failed while processing onIdentity() call in the System Writerobject Details: AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol. I did as most articles suggested but with no change. From changing registries
to taking ownership of the %windir% and adding the NT AUTHORITY, the NT Service and BUILTIN\Users. No change.
Help is much appreciated before i make a boat anchor out of the WD Sentinel.
    Kind regards

Well looks like there is a change or two to be made on the client computer, granting some access to the NT Services and NT Authority. To automate this fix I wrote a batch file to be run on the client pc:
    takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /a
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM":(RX)
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller":(F)
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "BUILTIN\Users":(RX)
    pause
    takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM":(RX)
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller":(F)
    pause
    icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "BUILTIN\Users":(RX)
    net stop cryptsvc
    pause
    net start cryptsvc
    pause
The backup now starts on the Sentinel

  • Windows Server 2008 backup schedule wizard not showing volumes

    Hi folks,
We are running into issues when attempting to configure a Windows Backup schedule through either running the Backup Schedule wizard or through using the wbadmin utility. While I have previously posted this issue on a separate forum (with no luck) I’ve restructured
this description based on the responses received and am also hoping that this a more suitable forum for the problem we are experiencing.
On running the backup wizard the backup configuration screen shows the backup size to be 0KB for the Full Server option or if I choose ‘Custom’ and go to ‘select backup items’ the volume list is empty. However the later ‘select destination disk’ screen of
the wizard lists all of the disks attached to the server along with the associated volume letters (via clicking the ‘Show All Available Disks’ option).
On the backup wizard reaching the summary stage it then proceeds to format the destination disk. On completion of this format the wizard status then changes to ‘Creating backup schedule’ at which point it then fails with the message “The specified number
    of volumes is invalid”.
Equally running the following wbadmin command:
    wbadmin ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget:{81737a1c-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} -schedule:21:00 -include:c:
    Results in the following error:
“ERROR - One of the source volumes specified cannot be included: c: Please specify source as a volume drive letter or access path (if volume is mounted in a folder). Only volumes on locally attached disks can be backed up.”
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R620 running Windows server 2008SP2 and is operating as expected other than for this windows back issue. Everything appears as normal when I view the disks within the Disk Management Console. Backups used to run on this server
fine before it was migrated from old hardware to new hardware using Doubletake Move. Everything else is running fine since the migration apart from Windows backup so not why it would only be effecting Windows backup. I have also ran the wbadmin ‘delete
catalog’ command to remove reference to the previous backups that were taken.
Is there any other tests that I can run to determine why Windows backup is having trouble seeing the available volumes at the 'Select Backup items' stage but not at the Select Destination' stage? Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very
    much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Niall

    Hi Mandy,
Thanks for your advise and apologies for my delayed response. I've was on leave for the past two weeks and my colleague (who had been watching this post in my absence)
was nervous about deleting registry entries (:>)..
I have searched for upper and lower filter values defined under the specified 'Class' registry folder and have found there to be no values specified for either:
    "Storage volume shadow copies" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{533C5B84-EC70-11D2-9505-00C04F79DEAF}
    OR "Storage Volumes" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
Happy to share the other values stored under these two keys if they would be of use in helping spot the problem?
The only upperFilters value that I found within the Class registry folder that related to storage was:
"Disk drives" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} which had a REG_MULTI_SZ upperFilters value of 'PartMgr'.
Do you know if this Disk drives upperFilters value is as expected and if should/can I delete it?
Also is there any other tests that I can run to determine why Windows backup is having trouble seeing the available volumes at the 'Select Backup items' stage but not at the Select Destination' stage?
    Thanks,
    Niall

  • Windows Server 2012 - Backup failing with Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed

    Hi
We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
i am stumped, any advice would be great!

    Hi
Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

  • Upgrade to Windows Server 2008 installation fails (reports Services to uninstall but they are not installed)

    I am upgrading a Windows Server 2003 to 2008.
When I run the install it completes the Compability check and reports that Sharepoint Services and WSUS are installed. They are not installed and are not running Services either. I have attempted to remove Registry keys for these but this does not resolve
    my issue.
Control Panel, Add/Remove does not report these as installed either.
How do I get the 2008 install to continue and ignore these OR how do I "truly" get these "uninstalled" if there is nothing I can do to find out what is reporting that they are installed?

SBS 2003 does contain these feature by default. Is this a small business server OS?  If so I'd try them over here.

  • Windows server 2008 R2 Failed to boot

    Hello,
i need  help on the following issue:
i have a win 2008 R2 server failing to boot with a blue screen containing:
    stop: c000021a {fatal system error}
the verification of a knownDLL failed. system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x0000020 (0x005b0110 0x0000000000).
    the system has been shutdown.

    Hi,
As far as I know, the STOP 0xC000021A error occurs when either Winlogon.exe or Csrss.exe fails. When the Windows NT kernel detects that either of these processes
has stopped, it stops the system and raises the STOP 0xC000021A error. This error may have several causes. Among them are the following:
Mismatched system files have been installed.
A Service Pack installation has failed.
A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
An incompatible third-party program has been installed.
Regarding this error and how to troubleshoot it, the following article can be referred to as reference.

  • Reading .txt file on Windows Server 2008

I have a Java 7 application that we distribute, and it reads configurations from a .txt file distributed with it, in the same directory as the .jar file. On Windows 7, windows XP, Windows 8, this works fine, but on our server, running Windows Server 2008, this fails. It is a simple check that fails:
    Path p = Paths.get("config.txt");
    if(Files.isReadable(p))
This will not work on Windows Server 2008 r2. It suspect that it somehow hasn't got read permissions, but I'm not sure.
It also fails if the absolute path is specified.

And what if you use the regular old fashioned standard IO File class and not Files to check if the file is readable (File.canRead())?
Methinks (or to be honest: I guess) there is something odd with the creation of the Path object on your windows server file system, but I wouldn't be able to tell what exactly.

    Hi,
I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition. Everything was working fine until recently. I tried checking for the log files, but I see that there are no log files that are created now in the location C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup. The only files that

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 System State Backup fails "the parameter is incorrect"

    Hi,
I'm having the same problem as I've found in a few other threads.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/windowsbackup/thread/C633B2E6-1161-4146-BC09-C2712231F0EE
    and
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/0b0f2d9c-e3b1-4f85-a6d2-2e15e5a15bc1
I've tried running the vshadow.exe -wm2 > out.txt command and searching the output for invalid paths, but I can't seem to find any paths that looks incorrect.
I've also done a registry search under HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services for the / character and didn't come up with any in any paths either.
The server is a pretty new install. DC, DNS, DHCP, File and Print services. It has been running in production for about a week for a small business. Their previous server desperately needed changing over, so it got pushed in fairly quick. I never assumed
I would have had trouble with the system state backing up!. It would be nice to get it working so I can sleep at night :). The old DC is still running, so all is not lost in a failure, but still... I guess also once I've demoted the old DC, I can restore AD
just by restoring the entire system image (Don't have to worry about USN sync if only single DC), but I would still like a system state backup.
    Thanks, Ryan

    Hi,
Try to apply the following hotfix.
System state backup error in Windows Server 2008, in Windows Vista, in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2: "Enumeration of the files failed"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980794
You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

  • Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."

    Hi,
Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 domain join displays error "Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed...."
    DC:windows Server 2008 R2
    Domain functional level:Windows Server 2003
When Winxp join domain, have no this error message.
    I checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2018583?wa=wsignin1.0 does't work.
There have 3 suggestion in this article:
1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.
    BR
    Guo YingHui

    Hi Guo Ying,
I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.

    Anand S

    Hi,
Generally such kind of issues are caused by third party programs such as CD burning programs, device driver etc.
First please refer to this article to see if there is anything helpful:
Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff972408(v=ws.10).aspx
Meanwhile from the description, it mentioned a file under  C:\Windows\winsxs. Check the permission of the folder amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18005_none_676975d87cc9b6e6 and the file wcp.dll to see if the permission
and ownership are correct compare with the other folders.
Also as it provided 2 minidump files, you will need to use WinDBG to read the minidump files and see if there is any further information.

    Error The Data is Invalid.
Obs: I can make backups for System Reserved Partition .
I had the same problem 2 months ago (the data is invalid), Then I folowed this the advice to delete "Framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary
ASP.NET Files" and worked for me , from this post: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/89052b85-9c9b-479f-ab76-a20da3cc4696
Now I have the same problem and I delete the
Temporary ASP.NET Files , but it is not working , I received the same error on backup:
"The backup operation that started at '‎2012‎-‎09‎-‎20T07:13:26.024163900Z' has failed with following error code '2147942413'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."
When I try vssadmin list writers, Everything is ok , "No error" .
    I tried to run :

    regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
net start "System Event Notification Service"
    net start "COM+ Event System"
net start "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider"
    net start "Volume Shadow Copy"
    But is not Working
    Any Advice ?
    Thank's

    Hello Lucian,
the issue may be caused by an invalid entry inside the following registry sub tree.
    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Please open the registry editor with regedit.
Expand and local to the subtree, check if there is an entry that has a ".bak" value appended. If so, this may be cause the failure when trying to resolve the SID of the writer.
Please backup the registry key first, and then delete that entry with the extra ".bak" and reboot the server then test the backup
Run the command "vssadmin list writers" and make sure all the writers are stable with no errors
Please look for errors in application event logs after you initiate backup on the server
Sincerely, Asifkhan -- Please mark my post helpful if it was really helpful to you.

  • Opening Excel Workbook Fails when run from Scheduled Task on Windows Server 2008 Rw

    Hi,
I have a little vbs script that instantiates the Excel.Application object and then opens a work book to perform some tasks on it. The script runs fine when run from the command line. When I attempt to run it as a scheduled task (it is supposed to update
data that is pulled from a SQL Server at regular intervals), it fails with the following error:
Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'c:\test\SampleWorkbook.xlsm'. There are several possible reasons: .....
The file does exist. The path reported in the error is correct. The account under which the task is running is the same account I use to run it from the command line. User Account Control is not enabled, and the task is set up to run with highest privileges.
When I run the same script through the Task Scheduler from a Windows Server 2003 machine, it works without issue.
I was just wondering if somebody on this forum has run into a similar issue in connection with Windows Server 2008 R2 and figured out what the magic trick is to make it work. I'm sure it is rights related, but I haven't quite figured out what which rights
    are missing.
Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

This is truly killing me ... trying to get it working on Windows Server 2012 without success.
I desperately need to automate running Excel macros in a "headless" environment, that is non-interactive, non-GUI, etc.
I can get it to work using Excel.Application COM, either via VBScript or Powershell, successfully on many other Windows systems  in our environment - Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 (32-bit), etc.,  -BUT-
The two servers we built out for running our automation process are Windows Server 2012 (SE) - and it just refuses to run on the 2012 servers - it gives the messages below from VBScript and PowerShell, respectively-
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing several different versions of Microsoft Excel (2007 Standard, 2010 Standard, 2010 Professional Plus, 32-bit vs. 64-bit, etc.), but it makes no difference.
Would be extremely grateful if any one out there has had any success in running Excel automation on Server 2012 in a non-interactive environment that they could share.
    ( I have tried adding the "%windir%\syswow64\config\systemprofile\desktop"
folder, which did fix the issue for me when testing on Windows Server 2008 R2, but sadly did not resolve it on Windows Server 2012 )
